Just finished again Mankind Divided and having also recently found out that there's no new Deus Ex in the near future, I'm feeling an "emptiness", like something's missing.
Any recommendations on sort of similar games?
I'm leaning towards revisiting MGS Phantom Pain but I'm open to other suggestions too: something sci-fi, sneaky, futuristic, well... something like Deus Ex![]()

Replaying the classic Severance Blade of Darkness. Takes some effort to make it work on a modern PC.

Duude, nice! I haven't heard this name come up in such a long time. I remember being so into this, it gave me nightmares. Literally. One time I woke and found myself standing on the bed, probably trying to see if any skeletons are sneaking up on me
I remember it was a properly difficult game and every time I found a cool new sword or got the hang of a new combo, it would be so satisfying. A particularly marking moment in the game was when I'd find the sword which gives HP back... Queen's something, can't remember what it was called, but I do know that was almost the only weapon I'd use to be able to stay alive from that point.
Thinking about it now, is this one of the games that inspired Dark Souls?BrightSmith likes this. -

It's often been called a spiritual predecessor, don't know if there's a direct connection.

Got back into Elite Dangerous for a bit. (Had not played it for a long time). Just off exploring in a random direction. I never really played it seriously enough to get a decent ship. Kitting out an Asp Explorer, but I still have yet to start grinding the engineers to improve it. One thing I'm realizing as I get into less used sectors is that being the first to discover things isn't very lucrative from a bonus perspective. Mapping is way more lucrative.
Also finally landed on a planet for the first time, pretty fun actually. -
I think I'm going to replay Far Cry 5.
I keep finding myself listening to that damned soundtrack more and more often. I even start it sometimes when I'm driving around. It's properly hilarious and here in Texas it sort of fits in so well with all the religious nuts running around
This is the only game I can think of where I'm so fascinated by the main antagonist. Obviously this was the point, but they really did an amazing job. The character they chose, fits in so incredibly well and if they wouldn't be a bunch of homicidal maniacs, I swear I'd have tried to join them.

I had a chance to play Far Cry 5 for 3 days during last Uplay free weekend. Because it was only short of time, I cannot say about the story but gameplay wise, I prefer Far Cry 4 than Far Cry 5. No doubt that Far Cry 5 has better graphics and better optimized but Far Cry 4 still has better physics and the gun sounds are more meaty
By the way, I just got 100% completion in Far Cry 4 with Sabal missions. I’m thinking to replay with Amita mission. To be honest, I wish I could side with Pagan Min and crush the Golden Path.cucubits likes this. -
I do remember I did not like Amita's attitude throughout the game.
Hope you reconsider Far Cry 5. It's pretty different from 4 and to be honest, I liked 5 way more. -

I'm still winding my way across the galaxy in Elite Dangerous. I've entered an area where there's just system after system that is undiscovered.

I've been playing a lot of No Man's Sky. I've gotten much further into it than my other couple hour jaunts. I'll eventually get back to Elite: Dangerous.

I tried to get back to NMS recently too but gave up again at some point. I felt that they artificially increased gameplay time too aggressively by adding lots of really unnecessary grinding to get materials with the refiner.hfm likes this.

I'm replaying Alan Wake in anticipation of the Alan Wake-related DLC that's about to be released for Control. Excited to see where the story goes next, 10 years after the game was originally released.

Marathon. Originally a 90s Mac-only FPS made by Bungie, but they made the source code public and now there's a modern build of the game for OS X/Windows/Linux. Totally free to download and play!

Really enjoying Horizon Zero Dawn.

Horizon Zero Dawn (really good game... and it seems to be running fine for me for the most part... but its performance is... less than what it should be - though that's due to bad optimizations as it was stated - I should easily get over 60FPS on 1080p Ultra... and I'm getting half that on High... needs more patches/optimizations).

From what I can ascertain of online chats... it looks like Horizon Zero Dawn was outsourced to someone else who did a relatively bad port... Guerilla devs are now in the process of releasing patches for the game that should fix these issues.Last edited: Aug 16, 2020

I've seen those reports as well, seems to make sense that this is what happened.

AC odyssey, some assorted side quests in origins, grounded sp, prey mc, control dlc foundation.
For grounded I'd recommend just doing the offline, using a trainer to cut the grind out and refunding before time limit bc there's not more than 1 hour of straight play(mostly tutorial) there besides survival grinding which is not my thing. Nice graphics even at medium/60 but it's little more than a demo they want full price for with some promise for more substance later on(sighs). Map is not that big. Could be really cool if they give it a proper campaign story mode and a much bigger map. Funny how whacky they get with pc junk like the arachnophobia setting but the other giant bugs attacking you don't merit similar lol By this point any gamer should have seen much more scary things than spiders in game! He# there have been plenty of huge spiders in other games before or worse lol
Finally booted up outer wilds and idk not my thing, seems too cutesy and the timer is a big turnoff, wasn't hugely interested in the "worlds" either, controls were a pain even with a gamepad. Prey MC would be great if there wasn't a timer as well but that just kills it and it's the same level over and over, just dumb.
Control Foundation DLC is ok, not a fan of the white out backgrounds of the rock hopping levels so blurry camera effects, way too high contrast/ camera bloom when caves and the white out levels come together and I can find no way to tone that down. Hopefully the AW oriented DLC later on will be better. Game needs better optimization 1080/60 should not be so hard to get but that seems to be Remedy for ya. -

Put HZD aside to play Control. Pretty damn good.
Actually didn't realize it was coming out on Steam. Only saw it in one of the pop-ups. -
That's hilarious I just bought the dlc for that finally on EGS and was playing it last night. Foundation is good so far, feels good to be playing that again it's such a good game. I had a $10 EGS coupon still and the season pass was on sale. Got them for under $10.

I'm trying out Hellsign. Looks interesting so far but I don't know how it holds up for a proper playthrough.
Otherwise I'm a bit stuck... uninstalled HZD, for now I don't feel like returning to Death Stranding. Need to find something new... -

I just beat The Foundation DLC last night. So much fun. Looking forward to getting started on the Alan Wake DLC next.Last edited: Sep 1, 2020hfm likes this.

Same!! Foundation was excellent. I'm a small ways into AWE, it's pretty good so far, loving the Alan Wake tie in. I really like how they are leaving so many things mysterious.Prototime likes this.

Just finished AWE (except for the Schum games side mission). It was fun but a bit underwhelming. A lot of reused assets and repetition, and the Alan Wake story progression was quite a bit less than I was expecting it would be. And the main mission ended abruptly. I enjoyed it, and the boss fight at the end was a load of fun. Overall, AWE pales in comparison to The Foundation, but I'm still happy I got to have some fun with it.
-
I'm in the end boss fight right now, I have to say I'm getting a little tired of having to restart it from scratch all the time, wish there was a another checkpoint at the "half way" point.
EDIT: beat him after stepping away for a bit and coming back to it. I finished everything except the Shum stuff. I totally forgot where the arcade machine is and was like ehh.. do I really care about that?
I also agree it was slightly anti-climactic, but it was a fun time overall. Good vehicle for basically saying they are going to launch Alan Wake 2 in 2022.Last edited: Sep 5, 2020Prototime likes this. -
I just read this, great article neatly summarizing the events of AWE and some good analysis on how Alan Wake and Control might fit more tightly together.

Arkham Knight, played it years ago and lost interest first batmobile boss fight, trying again and it's pretty good, esp now able to almost max out. Haven't had batmobile fatigue so far but not to the first batmobile boss yet lol DLC's don't have it thankfully.
ACOdyssey DLC, and theHunter Call of the Wild which is an amazingly beautiful game with 8x 25 sq mi maps if you get all of them, huge. Pretty relaxing but high priced to get the whole game. -
crysis remastered..end of relic...best looking game ever in spite of glitches

Taking a break from PC gaming to play Super Mario 3D All-Stars on my Switch. It's interesting how it upscales the old games it includes. Digital Foundry speculates that it may use AI upscaling. If Nintendo is starting to dabble in this, it could have amazing implications for a Switch Pro running DLSS. A Switch Pro with tensor cores could potentially leave the PS5 and Xbox Series X in the dust, as AMD has nothing near DLSS-level upscaling technology. Not getting my hopes up too high because, you know, Nintendo will Nintendo. But it'd be fun if the Nintendo Switch, of all consoles, started offering the best console graphics.

Yeah, Switch uses an nvidia tegra X1, which can use nVIdia's upscaling, which is pretty impressive stuff on the Shield. Nintendo could definitely use that to their advantage.

I'm still holding out for Black Mesa as I quite recently played the original one again. Back in the day I think I finished this too many times, I need to wait some more to forget about it
For some reason I felt I needed a break from single players and I keep finding myself in Warzone these days. Lots of fun.
I am thinking about trying out No Man's Sky again. Maybe this time it will stick to me. There was a new patch release recently.hfm likes this. -
I haven't played it in a LOOONG time, I just saw it there and was like.. sure lets go for it. So far they did a great job of updating it, I never played any Black Mesa along the way I was holding out for when it was complete. I'm just past the rocket engine testing area. I'm remembering just how much Valve made use of scientists getting pulled into vents followed up by gibs flying out.
I haven't played HL1 in so long it was time hah. -

Mafia Definitive Edition.
You know a remake is done right then after all these years you still get goosebumps from seeing this and hearing that beautiful music...

Yes... It's a good remake... Highly recommended to both newcomers and old farts.TR2N likes this.
