Use the set command in the 1st post, but you might have to change pstates and it's not a guaranteed success for Quadro cards
This is great news! Do you have a screenshot?
Clocking memory is normal, clocking the +135MHz on the GPU is normal
You're not OCing hard enough![]()
Try using the 1st post guide to overclock beyond +135MHz
-
-
Yeah yeah I know
I just didn't know +1000 was possible so easily. I wish I could spend more time actually overclocking the GPU but unfortunately the CPU is a bottleneck (throttling).
-
Oddly, I can't seem to get my y580's 660M GTX above 885mhz using nvidia inspector.
Originally, I installed a 1Ghz core bios mod, and it does hold at 1Ghz after a restart, but then after I start my game and the load picks up, it throttles back to 885mhz. I've tried P5 and P0, neither seem to let me go anywhere above 885 mhz. Sadly, 885mhz is lower than the original boost frequency of 925mhz, so I'm actually getting worse framerate than I was before I started all this. I've been messing around for a few hours, and I'm up for any suggestions!
Went from 925 boost -> 1000 boost -> back down to 885 every time I launch something intensive after a few seconds. -
-
Thanks for the response. I've tried clean installations a few times, with no luck, using driver sweeper and following that post. Right now I'm running the latest nvidia driver, 320.18, and I've tried clicking pretty much everything in nvidia inspector to make it stick to above 885mhz. I still haven't tried all the batch file commands yet, other than setting P state. One thing I have noticed, is that if I select a plan other than Lenovo Dynamic Graphics, then come back, for a moment it will go to whatever clocks I originally set in nvidia inspector, such as 1000mhz or 1100mhz, then after about a second, go back down to 885mhz.
I wonder if it could actually be a temp problem, it does get quite hot when playing games. It gets a little over 90C sometimes, and I did originally believe that this was a temp issue.
Here's what I've tried.
- reinstalled windows
- clean installed drivers, both lenovo and nvidia latest
- tried changing pstate to 0 and 5
- using batch files to change clocks
- changing nvidia settings to max performance options
I unlocked my bios to 1ghz core, which does hold, until it seems temps get a little high. Any way to change this I wonder? The last time I tried changing anything in this modded bios, it bricked the bios and I had to send it in. I'm a PC tech, but I can't seem to figure this out. >: -

Thanks anyway. -

Okay...i'm looking at the first post but it's all very confusing.
I have the GTX 670MX, inspector shows that i have 3 values, current clock, GPU clock and default clock. Is GPU clock the "max" that my card is rated for? According to : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670MX - NotebookCheck.net Tech, the memory speed is only 700 mhz, but inspector is showing current memory clock as 800 mhz and base memory as 1400. Why are the figures different?
Also this is kind of odd, for a overclocking tool there doesn't seem to be any temperature values at all? -
Also i can't get nvidia inspector to start if i pin it to my task bar...
-
On ASUS notebooks, BD Prochot activation can cause extremely aggressive and premature CPU throttling. Turning off BD Prochot in Tstop might help other notebooks.
Using the posted method (read deeper) it tells you how to use a fixed clockspeed overclock method
Specific states are required to lock the driver on the override clock
vBIOS custom flash is optional, and if you do it, you won't need this OC tutorial anymore.
Never used NVInpsector while pinned to taskbar, run the .exe manually. -
I still don't see any explanation in your guide on how to turn off dynamic boost. All you did was post a screenshot of MSI afterburner to show why it's bad and then conclude it's bad. Unless the forum is bugged for me and i am missing a huge chunk of your post....
Tried setting the slider bars in nvidia inspector...i had it at +135/+400 mhz, no issues, temp hit 49 degrees celsius according to inspector....except the fan noise was REALLY loud. Very distracting. Is the 670MX particularly noisy?
Do you mean specific states are required to make the card run at a particular value instead of downthrottling when idle? How is this different from what dynamic boost does?
Noticed another funny thing with nvidia inspector today. When i open it up, my GPU fan noise completely stops and then i get this loud ticking noise from the laptop. Is it supposed to do that? -
Hi, I'm just learning all these things about overclocking and it would be very much kind of you to help me. I just have some simple queries.
These are my Specs:
Alienware M17X R4
Core 17 3740QM
GTX 680M
After reading all sorts of forums from here and there, I think the basic thing we are performing is to increase the Core Clock of any GPU, thereby pushing it to its limits at the same time keeping its temperature in check. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Also, Overclocking can't be done with the GPU's vBIOS locked, thereby we must first unlock it by flashing it.
Now that the Vbios is unlocked we can adjust its clocks and voltage levels. I hope I got it right till now.
I use MSI Afterburner to monitor and overclocking (At least I thought it was). I can increase my GPU's core clock without flashing any vBIOS.
I get a stable 718 MHz at 2D and around 757 MHz after enabling 3D. Won't I get a better performance just by increasing it's Core Clock speed?
Also, regarding the voltage levels, what do they mean and do we have anything to do with it while overclocking?
I was so confused after reading forums from almost everywhere, maybe that was my mistake. Maybe I believe half-knowledge is poison.
I may have got things wrong above, please correct me.
Awaiting Replies. -
Anyone have any luck OC'n the GT 640m le in the Vizio CA27-A2(all in one comp)? Thinking about buying this rig BUT the 640m le lacks with games(mainly would like to play WOW at high settings). So I'm wondering if OCn this guy is even possible(no idea how to get Vizio bio flashes?)
Any help/ advice would be great!!!

MSI afterburner should be able to overclock it to +135mhz (888mhz total) it can't do anymore. It's a restriction of vbios/drivers.
Voltage is voltage, higher voltage should allow higher ovreclocks, but I'm happy with the stock speeds tbh. -
-
So can someone please explain how to do stuff like turn off dynamic boost....
-
-
Thanks, how does that work with MSI afterburner though? Since it does not have any P states in it.
What happens if you OC to +135 clock? Dynamic boost can't push it any further?
What's a safe OC for the memory, since +1000 MHZ seems like a pretty large limit.... -
It is used with NVidia inspector (latest version), MSi Afterburner is only for vBIOS unlocked cards
-
At the risk of sounding like a complete noob... can someone help?
I've been trying to get this to work but am having some problems. Time has since moved on since the original post and methods described so can anyone confirm if this is working with M14XR2 and NVidia 320.18 drivers? Would you kindly explain your process? I'd appreciate the explanation including clarification on the process to create a working bat file?
M14XR2
NVidia GT650m 2GB GDDR5
BIOS A12
NVidia Driver 320.18
NVidia Inspector 1.9.7.1
MSI AB is installed, could it be conflicting/limiting inspector?
Currently running +135/+1000 -
The 650M config has been used with the 14XR2 and is working. Check 1st page and earlier posts.
Additionally there is a modified BIOS for use with the M14x that allows any OC software to go past 135MHz without .bat override files. -
Hello
I need help.
Mobius as you are an expert, do you have teamviewer?
I wish to give you acess to my notebook, and try to set up the nvidia inspector. I simply fail at any attemp to get more than two basic states.
Thank you! -

Acer Aspire V3-571G-9686. Was messing around with Nvidia Inspector and got these to work. Quite a boost and so far so stable. I also managed to put some thermal compound on my laptop for much better temps.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 6, 2015 -
So, for the M14XR2 (2gb gddr5 gt650m), it needs to force to Pstate 5. However, when I set this, I get artifacts and driver crashing.
Could someone post the correct text/commandline for a +200/+500 configuration? -
Wow Prema, great work. I'm about to flash V3 into my W170er. You are the man!
Btw, did you ever get to test the 780m? -
Mobius I have an Hpdv7 with a 650m Gddr5 I am very un familiar with overclock on laptops gpus. I have MSI afterburner and with that I only have +135core and +300 memory. What is the best way to go about this.
Do I need a modded vbios?
or can I just download Nvidia Inspector and make a batch file. Im not going to lie the orginal post has an abundance of information that has me kind of confused...hope you can help me out! Thanks -
ok so i was able to do the overclock. i have one question the gpu temps are between 75-80c is that too high should i bring the clock down some? i overclocked 1150mhz on core and 2500mhz on memory on my gt 650m 2gb ddr5
-
It does depend on what CPU you have, as well as the model laptop, (so I can't say for certain) however, it 70-80 shouldn't be a problem. I personally wouldn't want to see it any higher.
In regards to the GT650m, there has been reports of throttling at temperatures of 66-67+ so I consider 67 my maximum, although I never go over 65.
----
As for anyone still having difficulties, let me try to explain my working method in simplest terms.
Note, I am in no way responsible for what you choose to do with your system, I am merely explaining what I did for a stable working overclock WITHOUT having to find a unlocked BIOS.
I have an Alienware M14XR2 with A12 BIOS and 320.18 NVidia driver. 2GB GDDR5 GT650M.
- Clean install of 320.18 drivers.
- Download and install NVidia Inspector
- Created TWO .bat files in the NVidia Inspector directory. One named "Overclock.bat" and one named "Reset.bat"
The text in each .bat file is as follows.
Overclock (replace red text with your desired number) =Code:nvidiainspector.exe -forcepstate:0,5 -setBaseClockOffset:0,0,135 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,500 -setVoltageOffset:0,0,0 -setGpuClock:0,1,XXXX -setMemoryClock:0,1,XXXX
Code:nvidiainspector.exe -forcepstate:0,5 -setBaseClockOffset:0,0,135 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,500 -setVoltageOffset:0,0,0 -setGpuClock:0,1,405 -setMemoryClock:0,1,800

Greets, first time poster & total overclocking noob here. I am not a gamer but I use my Win7 64Bit Lenovo Y480 with a GT 650M in my cinema setup with projector (home theater). So basically I am only interested in overclocking my 650M just a touch higher to perhaps that +135Mhz threshold I keep reading about should put me at the same level as the next higher GTX 660M video card so to perhaps get better results using my video renderer of choice (madVR) with my media player (Zoom Player).
So I don't want to try any of that forced P-state stuff as written on the first page (could try possibly in the future) but right now please I just want some guidance/help to use Video Inspector to increase my GPU clock from the stock 745Hz to 880Hz (+135) and then I guess while I am at it I could increase the memory speed to 1250Mhz from 1000Mhz (is this possible also?). And can I do both of these overclocks just from within Nvidia Inspector without having to do command line stuff that I don't understand? If yes could you please walk me through it?
When I open VIdeo Inspector and click show overclocking I see three P states available: P8, P5, P0 in descending order. Which P do I select to do the the "simple" overclocks I wrote above? And then what do I have to do once I selected the proper P to adjust to get the core clock up to 880 from 745Mhz and the memory speed to 1250 from 1000Mhz? And then do I just click Apply Clocks & Voltage on the bottom and it saves these new variables? What happens if I have a problem with these new variables? Can I just click Apply Defaults and my video card goes back to orginal specs?
Like I said I am noob. I just want to get a little jump on the video card to see if madVR works better in my home cinema. Really thanks very much for a little walk through for me please...
EDIT: Since the GT 650M has a "boost up" to 885Mhz from the stock clock of 745 would doing what I propose above make no sense? Or would my "boost up" also be upped by 135 to 1020Mhz from 885?
-
Hi Andy, I'm not overly familiar with Inspector, but what you are wanting to do is easily done with MSI Afterburner without worrying about p states. Anything up to +135mhz is simply done with the slider. And yes, this will be on top of the boost clock speed, and should noticeably improve performance for very little effort. Just monitor the temps to make sure your cooling system is up to the task.
NVIDIA Inspector can do this as well I'm sure but I've always preferred MSI Afterburner. -
. I used Afterburner as you suggested and bumped up the 650M DDR5 core clock +135Mhz and the core memory +800Mhz (not really sure what to do with the memory or how important is is but I bumped it up just the same).
What this did for me is allow to play a pretty intensive video without frame drops at about 70% GPU load instead of the 85% under the stock settings (and getting frame drops) so this experiment really worked out and paid good dividends so big kudos to you...
Just wondering though if these settings are now 'saved' to the video card or will I need to redo this every time I come out of sleep and/or reboot? Cheers again...
-
Glad it worked out for you! My 660m is rock stable with the +135mhz on the core, but I only ran the memory at around +200mhz (stock is 2500), which bumped them to around 2700mhz if I recall... looking at your screenshot, it appears yours are at 2000 stock, so with your +800 based on 2000 you are now a bit higher than I was running. I like Afterburner because it is totally simple and offers easy monitoring all in one place, and includes a great on screen display you can enable while gaming to test temps/clock speeds etc without having to Alt-Tab out of game. When you change the settings in Afterburner they only last until you reset them or turn off Afterburner, shutdown laptop, or reboot, and are then back to stock.
You can set up Nvidia Inspector to use ".bat" files that will allow you to change the settings when you run the files as well. I just haven't played with Inspector much so can't be of much assistance there.
Good luck and have fun! You definitely bumped your 650 up to 660 speeds  -
Andy:
- what's the resolution (native) of the projector and what is the resolution of the content what you usually playing?
I'm asking because I use the same setup (650m and MadVR through MPC-HC) with 1080p display and 1080p24 and 720p24,25,30 contents.
And I can use an overclocked P5 state (that's the middle of the states): 800Mhz ram, 400Mhz GPU (with nvidiainsperctor):
- madvr settings:
- chroma upsampling: Jinc3 + AR
- luma upsampling: Jinc3
Why do I do this way?
Because P5 state uses less power -> less heat-> less ventilation noise! -
But yah, the movies & TV I watch on the projector are just your regular stuff SD 720:402, 23.976 & 25.000 and also 720p 23.976, with mVR & Reclock to speed em up to 25 to match my projector frame rate. Never have any problems playing that kind of stuff with stock 650M using mVR with the highest Image Upscaling Jinc3 settings + AR filter enabled. No laptop fan noise that I can discern when using the projector with these settings. Only have problems with stock 650M when playing very high bitrate 720p material on my Dell 1080p50 external monitor with Image Upscaling Jinc3 + AR then I get all kind of frame drops. So I bumped up the 650M clock speed to 880Mhz (and have since brought back the memory clock speed back down to the stock setting as I noticed no load or temp drop when having the memory overclocked so I figured might as well leave the memory speed as it is if I see no improvement). Then I can play those high bitrate 720p videos in Fullscreen Exclusive Mode also on my Dell monitor without frame drops albeit with a ton of fan noise because the GPU load is around 75% ;-)
Which is why recently I asked madshi in the Doom9 thread if he could implement profiles with mVR under Devices. For instance, while using my projector I could enable all the highest Image Upscale settings and FSE. But with my Dell monitor I don't want FSE and I want low image upscale settings. He said it's on his to-do list ;-)
Cool thing about Afterburner is that I set up my simple core clock overclock as Profile 1 and then checked "Enable this profile on reboot". I can close Afterburner, it keeps my overclock. When I reboot my laptop, after Win7 loads, the Afterburner exe will run for a split second, set the overclock profile I had set up, and then shut itself down. So I never have to mess with it again. Ever. -
i have alienware m17x r4 3d model....GEforce GTX 675M.......mine runs on a fixed performance level 1 on battery and on charger it changes according to requirement (goes to performance level 3 when playing games like crysis).
so i tried the above method to force performance level 3 when on battery to eliminate lag but it didnt change......this command is working only when i am plugged in....please help -

I have a question, why can't I oc the core clock over 745? Sometime I'm able to set it to 1ghz but after a few minutes it goes back to 745
I have a 2 gb gddr5 650 and I'm using the 320.18 drivers -
Since I went through the thread and couldn't find a pre-written configuration for the GT 640M 2GB GDDR3, here's the one I tinkered around with:
Code:nvidiaInspector.exe -setBaseClockOffset:0,0,135 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,500 -setVoltageOffset:0,0,0 -setGpuClock:0,1,975 -setMemoryClock:0,1,925 -forcepstate:0,0
Code:nvidiaInspector.exe -setVoltageOffset:0,0,0 -setGpuClock:0,1,645 -setMemoryClock:0,1,900 -forcepstate:0,16
alondite6 likes this. -
EDIT: please ignore, issue now solved.

Hi everyone.
Anyone with a 780M SLI that was able to overclock past +100 on the core?
Tried everything to no avail (modded vBIOS, downclocking memory and/or CPU to save power, pushing +25 mV, etc..).
950 is rock stable. Even only 975 crashes in few seconds.
Someone with a 780M SLI with similar experiences? -
Well, bad news. I updated to Nvidia drivers 327.23 today and my MSI Afterburner overclock didn't work anymore like it did with drivers 320.49. So I went back to drivers 320.49. I don't know if that is the fault of MSI Afterburner needing to be updated for the new Nvidia drivers or if the new 327.23 drivers are not able to be overclocked. Perhaps someone with more expertise can shed some light?

Hello guys,
Thank you for your work and congratulations for the thread!
I have an Acer V3-571G with i7 3610QM and nvidia 640M.
Here are my overclocking results on 3dmark 11
Also I have had several problems with the latest drivers 327.23, the VGA had a strange problem of "ON-OFF" in a desktop environment and I had big problems of stability even in moderate overclocking, so I went back to old driver 320.49...
I would like to tell you about a problem I have since I bought this laptop, unfortunately my 640M, in desktop environment (or in general when not in use), remains locked in the P0 state with frequencies pushed to the limit. All new releases of Nvidia and Intel drivers (chipset and VGA) up to now have failed to solve this problem. To resolve I used the stratagem of using GPU-Z at the system startup that is able to bring the VGA in the P8 state with lowered frequency (135-405MHz).
Has anyone had this problem and was he able to solve it without using other programs like GPU-Z at startup? -
Hi there,
I'm looking for a way to mod my Asus K56CB vBios, and I can't find any tool or memory offset to edit it vBios (GT 740m or OCed GT640m/650m with 2Gb of DDR3 on 128bit bus (GK107)).
Can someone help me to find out how to under/overvolt and remove clocks limits?
here is the vbios that i'm talkin' about:
