The incredibly low clocks probably have a lot to do with it.

so at this point, what's the update on how much VRAM? 8gb or 16gb? GDDR5 or HBM? High or low clocks?

I'm going to assume both: soldered is 8GB & MXM is 16GB. However, this is assuming it's not entirely soldered. This we do not know, yet. Basing this on the fact that soldered GPU's have had exactly half that of MXM versions (98% of the time).

Either way, it's overkill for a while, even through 2016.

This wasn't quite the case for Maxwell cards, however. Seemed to be primarily Gigabyte/Aorus and MSI that made use of the max memory VRAM in soldered versions of these cards.

    • soldered 8GB 980M in Gigabyte P35x, P37x
    • soldered 6GB 970M in Aorus X3, MSI GS70
    • soldered 4GB (max memory) 965M in Aorus X5

That's why I said 98% of the time. There are a few exceptions and special cases. There are even MXM 3GB and 4GB, 970M and 980M.

Pretty sure we already discussed those ID's were quadro cards or something unrelated to the GeForce GTX series.

There are no official ID's for the 990M or 990, nor are there any leaked benchmarks.

really curious as to how those soldered HK models will hold up to overclocking. especially concerning their (hopefully) controllable TDP via xtu ;) also, i find the naming scheme strange with the K model being an 68xx instead of a 69xx...

and this sucks so bad, its not even funny anymore. imagine if intel just left out all the igpu space (which takes up WAY more die area than the actual cpu btw) and used it for more cores instead. wed be using 12-18 cores by now, just like the server cpu monsters.... *sigh*

imagine if THIS performance boost had gone into cpu core development instead! +2680%!!!!

imo they should offer a line that is cpu line where the Igpu is atrophied to just enough to run at native resolution and stack more cores (or higher performing ones) and leave the video to the dgpu.

first company to do that would get my money for shure. lol.

anything new on the 990? shouldnt announcements be happening soon?

That chart is just hilarious. In beginning 2010 AMD already had a 1.1 TFLOP mobile GPU (Mobility 5870), so it took Intel over 5 years just to catch up to that, although the dGPU is probably still faster due to dedicated GDDR5. But hey, at least Skylake iGPU is DX12, even if it probably can't run any DX12 games at a satisfactory level. :p

exactly my point, why waste all that die space and energy to make something abysmal a little bit better (thus just "total crap")? as stated before, just include an igpu thats enough for desktop work at native res and leave everything else to moar cpu cores with higher clocks

because average joe market > enthusiast market?

there are x99 and server platform when "performance" is concerned.

ahh yes. i forgot pandering to the lowest common denominator

would be nice to see a chip that panders to our needs though.

personally i think if AMD reversed the counts on a line of their chips (example one of the laptop lines has 12 cores 4cpu+8gpu) they would have a winner on their hands. factor in some hyperthreading (or similar tech) and it could be a real beast.

yes but average joe market profit margin <<< enthusiast market profit margin

it was never a question of whats the bigger market, but rather if the enthusiast market has to be completely stomped to death?! whats that for?! o_O

because the average joe settles for good enough, where the enthusiasts screams for more costing millions in R/D.

They exist in the form of X99 and 6-core CPUs. Although frankly unless you encode a lot or can actually make use of those extra cores, it's just good money being wasted at this point.

But average joe volume >>>>> enthusiast volume

Pretty sure Intel's bean counters already crunched the numbers and determined that huge volume x small(er) margin is still way more profitable than tiny volume x huge margin.

by that logic we should have never seen any enthusiast hardware whatsoever... not only the high profit margins, but also things like free marketing (overclocking competitions, showing what the hardware can do when maxxed out) and a good name in the community are important factors. it just doesnt make sense to first support the enthusiast community and then just go all mainstream & entry on us :p

I agree, but compared to competition's benchmark, most chips can arguably be sold to us as enthusiast grade. Except with their aggressive pushing of iGPU we all know they could loose the rubbish and give us that die space for something impressive .
We're not really in a good place right now. No competition truly sucks. I pray that AMD can at least keep Nvidia honest for a long time to come.

This is why I hope Zen server/enthusiast APUs are worth a damn and are used in a laptop. Get 4+ teraflops iGPU and a mobile gpu giving a nice bump. I agree the die could be used for more, but if done properly, an 8 or 16 core with that built in could definitely accelerate graphics. Also, Intel has decided to back freesync in the next gen of iGPU (after skylake).

For Maxwell gaming cards I'd say it has been closer to 75-80%, anyways there are so few laptop models on the market with 980M and 970M (and even fewer MXM) that there does not seem to be any rule about this anymore.

At this point, announcement of a new card being soldered or MXM does not provide any clues about whether it will include maximum VRAM.

I am. Considering that Broadwell E Xeon is still on, they may wait for Skylake-E Xeon or a Zen if and only if the Zen server chips can be competitive and have a lower heat profile than historical chips from them (haven't seen an amd based Clevo, but they may consider it, hopefully, depending how the taped out chips, next month they should be back, turn out).

Guys more cores doesn't mean better in all cases, especially gaming. I know everyone would rather intel get rid of the IGP for more cores, but they want $$$$ so they do that only on the enthusiast/server platforms such as X99. You can actually use the 18 core Xeons on most ASRock X99 boards.

But unless you're using applications that can even take advantage of those many cores, the lower clock speeds will actually hurt performance in many applications as well. Trust me, I know. My previous laptop was the Clevo P570WM (the one Mr. Fox has now) with a 10-core Xeon. Gaming wise, it was just where most quad cores were, slightly worse because of the low clock speeds but in video rendering and some scientific compute software it was awesome.

The enthusiast market may make a bigger profit margin but it's like... selling 5,000 products that give you a profit of $300 each vs selling 100,000 products that give you a profit of $50 each. lol

Can't wait for that 990M though, combined with a 6700k in the Clevo P751DM-G ;)

I do agree. But I do not only game with my laptops. If that was my sole concern, the performance chips (6700k or 4790K is preferable, and from current benchmarks, that is mostly true as I haven't seen benefits using 8 core on directx 12) would be my pick. Now, I'm also interested in the use of dmi lanes with hard drives and video card in coming generations. But you have valid points.

I'd love to see eight or 10-core desktop Xeon in the next Clevo paired with 980M or 990M gaming graphics. Business in the front, party in the back :p

Unfortunately, it seems the new mobile Xeon CPUs in Lenovo P50, etc., are just quad core - do they actually perform any better than haswell mobile i7 HQ or MQ chips in demanding applications? Ultimately, they must be a lot weaker than i7-6700K, no? Not talking about gaming but for creative applications.
