Yea. They generally dont, thats why I didnt mention it above. As long as the seal isnt broken youre good. HOWEVER, they are pretty harsh about the 14day time frame.

depending on if the manager is in a good mood or not, you might get store credit after 14 days

    Thanks for the input guys,

I hope it's still in the box, I have an older brother (28) who drops by my dads house very often, it's a good possibility that he opened it to check it out. Which I cant really blame him too much since I hadn't left specific intructions to anyone not to open it. I'll call today to find out it's state of packaging.

Yea with the 14 days, I'm thinking I shouldn't risk going over that time period to return it. Wouldn't want to give them any excuse not to take it back.

Ugh, yea in the end it's just going to be up to what happens this mid-august with the 7811fx release. My finals end the 14th, hope I get some good news that day.

Tell me about it! Every time I compare specs to the price on a Sony I find myself saying: are you fregin kidding me! What they don't realize is people are not willing to pay a huge premium because it says "Sony" on it anymore.

Yeah you get discouraged when looking at Sony notebooks and the fact that Sony still manages to "rip" people of with their "brand name"... It's not the 80's any more!

Frankly I don't see how Sony sell ANY notebooks. Oh well, maybe people are waking up to it.

I have to completely disagree with you. Sony makes fantastic media laptops and they look stylish unlike Dell. They're not expensive. You can get their latest 16.4'' FW series for $1600 with a Blu Ray drive. You can even get a 15.4'' laptop for $900 with 4GB Ram.

I can understand if you are looking for style, I suppose. What impress me though is a complete feature set, no weaknesses.

Blue Ray drive is something that I will probably not use for another 1 or 2 years, (if the discs are cheap and games/applications are becoming standard released on them) and by then the rest of the specs on the notebook will be outdated anyway, so why pay a premium for that now?

4GB RAM notebook for $900? Doesn't impress me the least... doesn't say anything really. In fact it sounds high to me. Don't tell me it has integrated GPU...

But yes with their new series of notebooks, Sony is slowly heading in the right direction...

They always sold quality notebooks. Head over to the Sony Style store and customize one for yourself. They're thinner, stylish and have great battery life. It's basically like Lenovo's Thinkpad's but for the entertainment/casual niche.

You think Sony rips people off, just look at Apple, their company is the pretty much the difinition of "rip - off" :D :D

I just configured Mac Book pro with specs WORSE than Gateway (it has 8600GT vs 9800GTS)and it came out $3049 whereas Gateway is $1400...

So the person who buys that computer is paying TWICE as much for a WORSE product.

They manage to "rip people off" because people are still handing them money hand over fist. It's like some people can't get enough of grossly overpaying. And because of this, it's really not classified as ripping anyone off, as they are consciously more than willing.

And you know, its funny. I REALLY do like Apple computer products and could definitely see myself owning a Mac of some sort, but damnit! I just cannot bring myself to pay that kind of money for one!

The problem is they don't have any laptops with a good video card in them. Also I don't see Blu-Ray as something that I would pay extra for right now because nothing but movies are using them right now. I don't watch movies on my computer. I have a PS3 and a 50" Plasma for that. Also by the time that I might need a Blu-Ray drive I will probably be replacing it by then.

    Let's put it THIS way:
    MacBook 13"
    2.1gHz C2D
    1GB RAM
    120GB HD
    DVD-ROM/CD-RW
    X3100 gfx (Yuck!)
    $1099

Man - is that config even still AROUND in the PC world?
    Last one I saw was like $450 - even my wife's $349 lappie has a 15" LCD, 160GB Drive,and a DVD-RW!

'nuff said about the world's most expensive dongle...

Not to mention that 1GB of RAM today is just not enough. I wouldn't even consider anything under 2 and even that is on the low side.

Something else that you guys failed to mention. Sony's new line is actually much more reasonably priced compared to its older lines. The FZ line for example was quite a fair bit more expensive than similar configurations from other manufacturers.

I'll give kudos to Sony for lowering its prices for its new products, which seem very decent.

Secondly, Sony does particularly well with its thin/light models.

Lastly, you guys are paying quite a fair bit lesser than users in other countries for your laptops, so be glad!

I dunno - I went through Sony's entire line last weekend, trying to find somethoing reasonable with discrete gfx, and I saw $1500 notebooks with X3100 video!!

Oh - but they were available in all your favorite Jolly Rancher colors!

Kinda depends on the situation. It's a discontinued model, so it might be hard. Just DONT OPEN IT.

I today was able to waive some restocking fees on a guy that was returning a toshiba. It was a SE that was onsale for 799 a while back. I got him into our last 6850.

His leson: Integrated graphics wont run games. :)

I do like sony's new 16:9 wide screen note book.

I did however, convince a guy today to get the dv5-1017nr mainly because of the bluray instead of the new widescreen. :)

So I had my dad go to Best buy to ask about the 7811fx for me (still stuck in the caribbean) and I guess he was told that they would be putting it out for sale on the 17th. Maybe thats just for that store though ( Elmira, NY). Found out my P6860fx actually is still in the original packaging so my dad's going tommorow to see what he can do about returning it without the restock fee. I'm just glad my fathers taking care of it, he's seriously a genius when it comes to manipulating sales people.

The restocking fee is for opened merchandise, ie, they sell it as open box at a discount, and you eat that diff. A closed, factory sealed box they can throw right back on the shelf, as it is unmolested. I've bought a few things here and there at BB/CC as a gift for a bday/holiday/etc.., and returned it unopened without any fees, ie MP3's, cameras, and a laptop or 2, but all were still factory-sealed.

of course, as Lakjin mentioned, if you've gone over the 14 days, sealed or not, you MIGHT be stuck, so I'd advise against waiting too long - have 'em do it ASAP.

Yea I just got off the phone with my Dad and I guess he already did talk to the manager and I'm getting full store credit for it, he's returning it tommorow. Then he's using the credit to buy the 7811fx on the 17th, and I'll have it on the 20th :)

If it wasn't for this forumn, I wouldn't of had known that I could have done this/ or that the 7811fx was even coming out. Thanks for all your help guys, I really appreciate it.

from my understanding...ddr3 is more stable when trying to run memory at 1066 or higher. ddr2 running at 1066 is iffy....

yeah chase did BB and GW a favor by leaking this info out and pluggin in the retailers name... leaks always happen

it could be good or this could go sour for him... who knows

remember, he did get a majority on this forum hyped up for this particular model... thats revenue that BB and GW could take on but then again... chase is a sales person (if i can recall) and in the retail world, sales people are expendable, there are plenty of applicants willing to find jobs especially with the economy these days

sorry to say that chase, best of luck to ya... im thinking positive for ya and if good is on your side, hope you get a bonus or some incentive

Don't buy it. Since you're buying it for entertainment purposes, you can get the Sony FW series that weighs as much as 15.4'' and costs as much but has a Blu Ray read and write drive. The HP only has a read-only Blu Ray drive.

One of my major pet peeves, is something like that - people talking, when they have no clue. The person that said that, had no clue, and obviously wanted to make a sale.

I can understand, though, wanting to sell what's in stock, and not waiting until next batch, but geez... I mean, making stuff up?

That's low for even retail standards....
