the m$ default driver doesn't have trim but you still should not experience lockups, especially USB bsod's. Good to hear though all is good now................

I think it might be a driver.. I installed all the windows updates and the video driver, and the game worked perfectly. But when i installed the rest of the p79 drivers.. then it froze again.

what drivers ared you installing? (a list of specific drivers please)

Edit; the only driver I use from gateway, actually two:
    1.) Web Cam
2,) Reatek sound card (Has Stereo mix too)

Edit 2; Other than stock windows loaded drivers that I can think of:
1.) Intel IRST (From Intels support)
2.) Intel 5300 (From Intels support)
    3.) nVidia 270.61 (From nVidia)
4.) Intel chipset (From Intels support)

personally this is whay I am a minimallist. I run windows loaded drivers except when ready for enhancements. Since these systems did not come with Windows7 I primarily use M$ drivers. We have no choice on the Web cam drivers. The Realtek drivers are a verified good version and include stereo mix so they stay too.

    The exceptions again being;

1.) Intel IRST to get trim running for the SSD
2.) Intel 5300 drivers from Intel for better compatibility
3.) Intel PM45 chipset from Intel, again for compatability
4.) Nvidia's most recent drivers for game compatability.

I had noticed in changing the Mainboard that the original Conexant drivers were replaced by MS default drivers on reboot. This is how I knew the sound card was different. Since there is only one other used sound card it was easy to figure out.

I didn't realize you were forcing drivers that do not belong, IE the sound card. You have a new board and since it is a mixture of components you can never be really sure 100%. so you have to carefully experiment.

Now my media bar works so those default drivers are apparently ok..............

Edit; everything is slightly to largely different. You can now quad with the chipset, you no longer need legacy firewire drivers or a bios update to make them compatible. The board at minimum has different, more updated, revisions on it. For this reason you have to treat this as an entirely different system.............

you should do the fresh install then add a game. try it out and then once stablitity has been proven add a driver at a time and test it out again each time if this doesn't work.

I suggest this as you said from first default install before adding any of your/P79 drivers etc. it is 100% stable................

well I just did a fresh install.
    did the windows updates.
installed the 270.61 driver for nvidia.
installed the intel drivers you said you had.
I didnt even touch the gateway drivers yet, and the game still froze, almost instantly.

edit; now when i start up.. it stays on the "Starting Windows" screen for atleast 4 times longer then usual now...-.-..

you should first come from a fresh install, you had said it was 100% stable but be sure first, use Dirt2 demo as we know that works here. Once you are then one driver at a time.

A possible order to see what may be up is install each and fully test afterwards each individual driver for stability.

    1.) Nvidia drivers
    2.) Intel chipset drivers
    3.) if ssd IRST drivers
    4.) AGN 5100 drives
    5.) Gateway Web Cam
    6.) realtek drivers

But i did notice i played a full round on my game, then i simply plugged in my razer Megalodon headset and it froze.. so yeah.. we'll see tomorrow i suppose.

Ok.. I installed all of the drivers you have except for the web cam thing.. I never use that so yeah. And 3dmark06... whcih used to freeze.. was good to go. Twice I ran it with each driver.. and it worked like a champ. Now im downloading the game before school and checking it out a bit.

edit. When I was starting the game, and installing ccleaner.. it froze on me. Ill have to check it when I get home, but thats the only time it froze, and i did run 3dmark06 each and every time i installed a driver. Im hoping it works.. but with my luck im screwed....

edit; Well it keeps freezing still.. so im done.. im getting a new laptop. Thanks for all your help man, I appreciate it.

Would the GPU's sauder coming loose possibly be the cause of the freezing?

If it were the Solder Issue you would freeze permanently. Essentially they might get a freeze then never be able to boot again. You could just have a defective main board. I just do not have your external hardware to say it is your system and not a generic issue such as drivers.

So with stock drivers is all ok now, except the headset?

I would ask if powermizer is off but that shouldn't matter, at least it doesn't here. I used the stock M$ drivers for a while with no issue as well before going to the Realtek drivers.

at this point I would contact the vendor about an rma of the main board. it shouldn't without any other devices just lock up..............

Edit; you have a PM, try resetting the DST table................

sorry, didn't realize you had such a short window. for future whenever that happens contact the vendor and let them know you have an imediate issue, then provide them the option of RMA before or suggest you are willing to trouble shoot it but would need an extension to the RMA period.

Try the DST table reset, I have seen that work before. Again slim chance but one worth taking. note if the DST table resets works out as reassigning resources it will boot reinstalling alot of hardware,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

LOL, I remeber with my P78 I had a lock up issue with a sd card in with the wrong drivers, do you have a SD card in the slot? also install O2 micro drivers, mine are version 2.1.1.36

Edit; Tried a newer O2 driver couldn't even reboot, locked up. So yes I would say a proper driver here is a must have................

Edit 2; Gateways 3.31 listed driver fo P78 seems to work but for x64 it seems to keep the older version...........

Ah, well good to hear you had not totally given up yet. I can tell you to be sure the prope O2 Micro drivers are there or they will lock up the system. It is rtying to find a drive that is not there and the system does think of it as a usb drive...................

nVidia with 7xxxm to 9xxxm placed out a blanket recommendation to slow the progression of "Bump" material degradation. This showed in nVidia bios 9.20.00 and above by allowing the GPU temp to get quite high beforre cooling kicked in and kept the temps up theredurring idle.

The 260m was released well after the bump material fix so no such provision for the temps was made. Mos P78xx's were made after the fix but I guess they still fall into the prevention scheme................
