The Best Buy's in my area are running a "pilot program" where they are not charging a restocking fee on laptops.

    Just purchased yesterday.

    1920x1200

    LG / LGD3901
    Batch: I112358

    Best Buy Tucson, E. Broadway

Looks like even recent manufacture 'may' come with the 1920x1200 Screen.

Frankly, I don't think we have nearly enough data points to draw that conclusion. We really need to get more 7805 owners to post their batch numbers and screen res in this thread.

Well, we do have enough data points to conclude that some early builds, or batches, and some recent ones may have either the 1440 or the 1920 screen, that's for sure.

Based on my experience on opening boxes at bestbuy and owned a grip of them but ended up selling them, all of the lower batches i opened atleast 8 of them are all wuxga's and they are on different batches but all i remember was they where all I07XXXX and I08XXXX. And for all the wxga's i opened where at the range of I09XXXX and I10XXXX, But 1 out of 5 boxes i opened from I09 and I10, 1 of them was a wuxga. Im really sure that is lucky ones gets the wuxga's on the I09 - I10 range batch numbers.

These numbers appear on a sticker on the retail box and, currently, they begin with the letter "I". The color of the sticker itself is white plus another color, typically blue, green, or orange. The batch number is located in the upper right corner of the sticker. The following post contains a link to an actual picture of the sticker:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4404605&postcount=114

The upshot is folks here have been trying to look at these numbers to figure out the screen resolution (1920 or 1440) of the unit inside the box. Presumably, units with the same batch number should all have the same screen res.

Fair enough.....but have you looked at the (compiled) reports in the following post?:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4783523&postcount=297

Note that, of the 4 reports with I09 and I10 numbers *all* are WUXGA. Further, of the 7 reports with I07 and I08 numbers 2 are WXGA.

Sure appears as if it's still a dice roll *unless* one buys the *exact same* batch number that has a resolution reported for it. Probably be a big help if more started reporting batch numbers *in full* as well as the location.

I just ordered mine!!! :D No point posting yet, other than excitement, since I don't have any numbers off it yet. I decided to go for the WXGA screen, both for performance, and the fact that some applications have fonts that can't be bumped up large enough for my eyes to be happy, on my 20" 1680x1050 desktop setup. :p (Eve-Online being one) Also, I got it brand new, full warranty, shipped & insured via UPS, for $984. Once I get it, I'll either amend my post with a batch number or make another. (my apologies for being off topic) For anybody that bothered reading this far, lol, how easy is it to go to XP on? Not asking for instructions, just a basic yes/no type answer, as I'm getting ready for a cross-country road trip and am trying to decide if I wanna take the plunge before, or after I get back. FWIW, my plan is to use a copy of XP Ultimate/Experience.

From what it appears, it is not just the early batches that may be WUXGA 1920 screens.

Makes it even more curious as to why Gateway is doing this, doesnt' it?

Maybe they realized the screen lotto was driving a LOT of hype for this model. Though frankly the price would have gotten plenty of hype anyways, it's 4 months old and its still probably the best bang for the buck gaming notebook. I think they shoulda just shot for middle ground and made them all 1680x1050 screens, but that's my wants talking more than anything.

Pure speculation, of course, but my guess is that suppliers (whether AUO or LG) are under pressure to supply enough panels to fulfill the demand AND/OR they're discovering that, for whatever reason, the "yield" on the 1920 panels is better than that of the 1440 panels (rendering any cost considerations moot).

I mean, regardless, neither LG nor AUO wants to risk losing a customer *even if* it means shipping a component that carries a lower profit margin. However, it may very well turn out to be that it really doesn't cost either company *that* much more to ship higher res panels.

    Again, mere speculation........

Hi. I just ordered one of those TigerDirect refurbished P-7805u FX laptops and when I ordered I wasn't aware that people were getting higher resolution models. But now that I know people are getting 1920x1200s I really hope mines one of those. It should get here tomorrow.

My question is, is there anyway to tell from the part number or the serial number (the only bits of info i have that might tell me) which panel I might be getting? I hope it's a 1920x1200. That would be so good for me. At this point if I get the 1440x900 I am gonna be unhappy. :(

Yeah I'm confused... If I go to buy one, where do I look to know in store if I can get the box open? Is there a serial number or sticker on the outside to indicate this? Or will I have to have it turned on?

From what I've read, most of the early batch Gateway FX P7805u's came with the 1920x1200 screen resolution. The early batch identified with a serial number of 138 and the newer batch with the serial 139.

For example: I ordered my P7805u from Tigerdirect as a refurb. On my invoice, the serial number provided was LXW430X0 138. The laptop should be here tomorrow, so I'll verify what I've posted then.

Once I receive my laptop, I'll post the Screen Batch Numbers.

Not necessarily. The 139 batches also can come with the 1920 screen. As I seen people refer to around here, it is literally a lottery.

Why? I specifically bought the lower resolution version because A: you can set video card/game settings higher, and B: a 17" screen is just too small IMO to be pumping 1920x through it. I would like richer color than whichever version LCD I got, and if I ever see a quality 1680x1050 LCD for the right price, I'll probably snag it. I definitely wouldn't pine after the huge resolution though, as most here seem to do. (and admittedly, I did at first, before I bought mine)

The serial number appears on the side of the box and begins with LXW430. The batch number appears on a sticker which is usually on the front or back of the box and, typically, is blue & white, green & white, or orange & white.

Screen Batch? If you mean the resolution, 1440 or 1920, then I understand. Regardless, it will be interesting to learn if the TigerDirect refurbs are mostly one or the other res.......or just sort of random.

I wonder whether the refurbs are being shipped in the original retail boxes (haven't seen that reported anywhere) and, if so, whether the serial numbers on those retail boxes match the serial numbers of the laptops inside.

It's important to me to get the 1920x1200 screen because that's the same resolution as my gaming desktop. I plan to play Lord of The Rings Online on this laptop while away from home and playing the same account on different resolutions will mess with your window locations.

If it's 1440x900 it wouldn't be a disaster but having 1920x1200 would be a little more convenient for me, know what I mean? Anyway it's out for delivery, so sayeth UPS tracking. Wish me luck. :)

This will be my first laptop PC. I've been constructing my own desktop PCs since the early 90s and I build and repair desktop PCs, workstations and fix the odd laptop too. I avoided buying a laptop for the longest time because I wanted to put my money towards my desktop PCs. I disliked the lack of upgradeability/customization inherent in laptops. However my need for one has grown big enough to where I thought it was time and I saw this awesome deal and I hopped on it. I've never bought anything refurbished before. I hope it isn't a dud.

Screen Batch I believe refers to the 'brand' and type of screen that comes with the Gateway laptop, its what the whole thread is based on. I will also post my screen resolution as the laptop should be delivered to my door step any minute now.

From what I've seen, I believe that the box that the laptop is shipped in is just a plain brown box with the gateway logo.

    No.

"Batch number" refers to the Batch number on the label on the outside of the box. I assume they build a "batch" (5, 10, more?) at one time on an assembly line. This is on the original, mostly black, GATEWAY box.

This number is not one the FX notebook, and most likely will not be on the plain brown replacement box used for the refurbs.

Perhaps, in retrospect, we should also have used the build date which is on the notebook?

Thanks for the correction, with that said I just received my Gateway P7805u from UPS! The laptop came in beautiful condition; well packed, no scratches, nothing loose, and the gorgeous 1920x1200 screen.
The only minor problems I've seen so far are:
    1) Slight bleeding on the whole bottom of the screen and a patch on the top center of the screen.
    2) Possibly a few dead/stuck pixels... nothing obvious or distracting.
    3) Buzzing of the power adapter.

I'll post my Batch number in a few minutes. :D Man this laptop was a blessing!

*edit I assume I can't post my batch number because I don't have an New Gateway with the original box. I ended up with the AUO, which isn't the best... but for the price, it can't be beat.

Date of Manufacture says 081216 (dec 16 2008)

Keep an eye out for this guy on Ebay: barterextraordinaire . He's been selling brand new/non-refurbs, full warranty, for $979 + $12.99 shipping, ( FedEX with signature), and has excellent feedback, communication etc. That's who I got mine from and he seems to put one up here and there. Mine is the 1440x900 screen, but again, performance is definitely worth more to me, and you CAN make the 1Gb 9800m GTS strain, even with the lower resolution. (games/applications are just going to get more strenuous) IMO, this resolution is a great size for a 17". One thing I do have to say is the color seems a bit washed out, compared to what I'm used to - but this is my first laptop since '01 and I've been looking at the Viewsonic on my desktop for quite awhile, (so have nothing to fairly compare to). I have absolutely no other complaints though, and again, the color may look great for a laptop. This sucker's performance is definitely fantastic! BUT ANYWAYS, back on-topic..

    Resolution: 1440x900
    Batch number: I091051
    Serial number: 139***1***

I think the color on most of these seems "washed out" at the default settings, but once you've adjusted them in NVIDIA Control Panel, I'm sure you will be pleased.

Yeah, I've gone there and it definitely helped. I think part of my problem is ever since I got the laptop, it's been sitting side by side with my desktop. Admittedly, I probably go a little heavier on the digital vibrance etc. than most people too. I saw a 1680x1050 LCD for a similar Gateway & was thinking about seeing if it'd work, (the resolution I run on my desktop), but am really thinking I'll stick with the stock resolution. If there's one with better color I might swap over to it, though again, am happy enough with what I've got if there isn't. :) That money would be better spent, later, on a T9800 anyways!

**I HAVE A QUESTION AT THE END IF ANYONE CAN HELP**
Hey guys I have a story:
First of all THANK YOU for all of your contributions with batch numbers and serial numbers
So At first, I was planning on getting the Asus Laptop that bestbuy now has for $899 and after seeing what else was being offered I came across this beautiful machine....
So first I compared the specs and this was a much better value for the money than the ASUS
Then I read reviews for both, and while people liked it..many people had issues with it crashing or dying.
I read reviews for this and people loved it even the 'editors' loved it but they say the screen was dumbed down from it's predecessor...

So I made up my mind I said - Self, we are getting the FX...
I then started looking something up about it and somehow I came across this very thread
So, of course now I wanted the 1900x1200
I wrote down all the batch numbers (I don't have a printer) and also kept in mind the 138/139 serial numbers
I am in NY and there are 4 Best buys in my vicinity (30 mile radius i suppose-or20)
So yesterday was THE day I HAD to get it (for reasons I don't want to go into)
This began about 5 or 6 pm...................
So I first went to MT Vernon in NY
I asked the sales rep to look at the batch numbers and none were a match
(of course she was reluctant and asked why is this important)
So we spent time there and left...
We proceeded to Fordam road(a busy area) and there were TWO FX's on display so I checked the resolutions on then and they were BOTH 1920x1200
So, I was happy because I assumed they would have these in the back as well... the rep wasn't great but he did what I asked and looked at the batch numbers for me(apparently they keep THESE laptops "in the back" as opposed to on the floor)
Of course....none of the batch numbers matched... UGHHHHH
So I looked under both display models and noticed both had 138 in the serial
I then asked him to check the other ones... they were all 139 UGHHHHHHH
I called both hartsdale(NO ANSWER AT ALL) and Yonkers(took forever)
Yonkers say they had ONE in stock...

I went to Hartsdale BB(figuring they had more)... I spoke with a floor assoicate and he said someone had come in there before looking for the same thing I was
The display had the 1920x1200 (serial # had 138)
He told me to talk to a specific dude and I did... this guys was like "oh no that 1920x1200 is a manufacturers defect and I can't guarantee that you will get it"
I went on to say I have a few batch numbers - "he said we don't have batch numbers on these boxes"... I said... well at the other best buys they were on the side of the box
so he knew I was being persistant supposedly checked...."No we don't have any matches" ...I asked if he could check the serial numbers, specifically for 138 he came back out and said they are all 139 UGHHHHHHHHHH

So by this point it's a little past 8pm Yonkers closes at 9...
now my son poops himself BAD my girl goes to the store to buy him new clothes.... UGH TIME IS TICKING
She comes we all go (it was a family thing...mom brother my 2 kids my girl..but I digress)
So we barely make it to Yonkers ...At this point, I was just going to take whatever they had...it was late we ran around alot..they(family) were patient ...
We wait like 10 minutes or more and the associate says..I can't find it
    What the EEEEEFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
I ask well what time is NYACK BB open until ...He checks 10pm checks inventory...3 in stock................(keep this part in mind)

We go to Nyack... about 940pm or so
So I check the resolution on the display model.... 1440......so every other store had a 1920 display....this store had a 1440...I felt defeated... but I said I will get it anyway but I still said let me ask about serial#/batch....
So this guy was more helpful and curious not agitated...
He sees one left, I check it... batch is no match...serial is 139....
so while we are talking (I figured I'll suck it up and get it)..I see another box...I walked over and it was another FX, I said, may I see this one... he says sure...
---- An aside in regards to knowledgeable reps...
He told me that inventory will show 3 but one is the Display model!!! So YONKERS had me waiting for NOTHING because they saw 1 in stock but it was probably the display!!!-----------------------
    Back to the story!!
batch did not match..serial # 139...but something said ..take this second one....
So anyway we buy it...I go home...
I get home and start pulling data off my bro's laptop he lent me(part of the reason I HAD to buy it yesterday)
I came here on this thread and checked the Batch # again...it's not even listed --- I121860 ---
I open the box and say...oh I would hope it's the 1920..but oh well...
I start it up ..I notice the screen looks REALLY good..but I'm like nahhhh..maybe because I'm home and nothing to compare it to...
Windows Desktop finally comes on and it looks REALLY good...
I check the resolution 1920x1200 YEAH BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So there is my batch # guys and serial is 139

My Question - I have not bought a PC in FOREVER but when I was into new systems, they CAME WITH CDs now I know they data is probably on a partition but that is not sufficient to me
what if the whole drive fails?? (I know I can back it up but I am not sure how and I WANT CD's)
Anybody know how I can attain Windows and whatever other programs ON DISC..
I mean JEESE WE ARE PAYING FOR THE LICENSE (not yelling at you guys just venting)

Do you mind sharing what the serial number is?

    Like 1390 xxxxx22000?

Obviously, you don't want to post your FULL serial number, but a couple more digits after? Also, whats the MFG date on the back of the laptop?

I'm sorry I can't give you a full answer to your recovery disk question, but I am 100% sure it can be done. Try searching under any gateway start menu group.

Anyone have an idea what this one would be?

    I141984?

The other one at another best buy was

    LXW430X013901B0f2200

I went to a couple best buys, both people seemed clueless when I told them is there a way to make sure I will be getting this resolution. They were nice, and after a while this girl went to her mangager, because I mentioned if I could have Geek Squad Open it to see, then one of there guys, not sure if it was a manager came and said, I had 4 people this week come in asking about this. I opened one and it was 1440. he said that these computers were never suppose to come with the 1920, that Gateway messed up. I dont believe him, I remember them advertising last fall that this laptop came with a 1920 screen.

It actually was supposed to be a 1440x900 screen, and gateway/bestbuy did make a mistake when placing them out for sale originally.

The 1920x1200 that you remember advertised last fall was more than likely the 7811

I would bet on the safe side and say its a 1440x900. The number you gave is quite a bit higher than the ones posting the 1920x1200 screens, so i would assume its part of the second and higher run that had the correct screen resolution.

I'm not saying its impossible to be a 1920x1200 screen, but i wouldnt place money on it

Its a 139, so like KM suggested... expect the 1440x900 screen.

Guys, heard contradicting reports about what screen is better.

I've read that someone thought that the 1920x1200 screens bled/ seemed washed out more than the WXGA screen. Has anyone, anyone who compared the screens side by side agree/disagree with this statement?

    EDIT: Found it. (Vision33r)
    Thanks. :)

Its really according. I tend to prefer 1440x900 for gaming, but in work i want the 1920x1200 due to being able to get more on the screen.

So its really according to what you use the computer for mostly
