Does anyone know if the 260GTX is underclocked on the gateway(s). Certainly hope not and if so, can it be "overclocked to stock"

nVidia has put out utilities to be able to control the clock speed on their cards. I imagine, though, that the Gateway has it clocked stock since the cooling solution seems to be better than that of some other laptops that do underclock.

The 260 is definitely stock speed. The cooling system is good, unlike some of the Asus ones at BB.

I wouldn't be surprised that these new 79xx comes with the same cooling as the 78xx. Some guy, maybe a month or so ago, already stressed the 260m GTX (Canada got the 79xx early), and it runs ~10c hotter than the 9800m GTS. He ran Furmark.

Didn't mention anything, all I know he ran a small timed test with Furmark and got around 75c. I did the same test and got 65c. We both had the same ambient room temp.

I ordered the P-7908u and a 25" I-Inc 1080p monitor to go with it from Tiger Direct yesterday. I'm a Marine living in Japan though, so it will probably be a few weeks before I get them. This will be my second FX laptop, first one was a 7811.

JesusFreak316, you mentioned that your Gateway desktop/motherboard got fried about two years ago...I am curious, that was before that Gateway was acquired by Taiwan-based Acer Inc. In October 2007?

    http://www.gateway.com/about/news_info/company_background.php

I would like to get Gateway P-7915u for about $1,099.99...But I don´t find any online, aparently only the P-7908u is available, any news or release date for the P-7915u?

BTW, looks like amazon.com has the P-7908u from www.tigerdirect.com, but the extra shipping and the additional US$91.00 tax is to high!!...The Gateway P-7908u Direct from Amazon.com is still backordered.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002QPWBY0/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new

I also would like to get a 2nd. laptop from $600.00 to 900.00, but not as powerfull as the Gateway´s FX Models...I am considering the new Asus F50Sf-A1 16-Inch Laptop - Silver Blue (Intel Core Two Duo P8700 Processor 2.53GHz and NVidia GT 220M 1GB DDR2) at US$779.99.

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...t_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance

The Asus F50Sf-A1 normal price is about $850.00-$950.00, But Today Amazon is offering the F50Sf-A1 for US$100.00 Less!!

Anyone knows something about this Asus F50Sf-A1 Laptop??

Thanks for your help and fast reply to all my requests!!

Yeah, I believe it was before then. Although, the FX series wasn't introduced until Acer bought Gateway and they have been good. It seems their products have improved but I can't tell you if their service is different. It just so happened that recently my desktop was struck by lightning and now internet won't work on it. I contacted support today via the online chat on the Gateway website. It was just as helpful as before except for one big problem. My computer is out of warranty so the guy wouldn't talk and just told me to call the paid support, which of course I won't do. So, as far as my experience goes, great service and support while under warranty, useless once you're out. Not a big deal for me, as I do most fixes myself, but it still isn't cool.

For the Asus, the specs sound really good for the price and jsut overall good, but I'm not familiar with Asus in general so I can't say much as to the quality. Personally, if I were you, I'd make my second laptop be very portable, with a ultra low voltage core 2 duo or even a netbook for battery. 16 inches isn't all that much smaller than the gateway except for probably weight, but to each his own.

I would definitely not buy the 7908u unless it were tax free. $200 ($125 after tax on the 7915u) over the 7915u is already pushing it, but ~$300 is a definite no. Maybe if we find out the 7908u has an LED and the 7915u doesn't that might change things...

Thanks JesusFreak316 for your fast reply!

You mentioned, that have contacted support today via the online chat, but is there any way to contact Gateway Cust. Service Without Having to enter a Specific Model and Serial Number, via EMail or Chat just to ask them about the latest FX models characteristics and the release date??

I am asking, because I never had find an EMail address (in Gateway´s/Contact-Us), just to ask directly to them about an specific product...

I also would like that Gateway release the 7915u soon...And hope that the 7908u have something extra like the LED Display!!

I am considering the Asus F50Sf-A1 for the P8700, the NVidia GT 220M 1GB and the low US$779.99 price. But,Since you are not familiar with Asus, could you recommned a similar laptop ($650.00 to 850.00) from Gateway or any other brand, preferably with the latest Windows7 and NVidia GT 220M 1GB?

Not that I know of. I was searching their website the other day for that too. It says they don't do any direct sales anymore, so I take that to mean that we should be contacting the resellers such as Best Buy. Problem is, in my experience, that the people at Best Buy don't know much.

Sorry, but I really can't recommend anything else. I really don't follow laptops much believe it or not. :p I just do a crapload of research on what I'm planning on buying, but not much in general. I just know about the FX series. The main stuff I know is hardware. If you were looking at laptops with different specs I could probably help you decide but I just don't know enough about dependability, usability, etc. about most laptops. But, as far as I know, Asus is a really good brand, probably better that Gateway for the most part. I just like Gateway's FX series and their battery life is a huge plus. If you really gotta have those specs, go for the Asus; they're good computers, and that one looks great. I'd just get a smaller laptop personally.

GilmourD, I think that no one here have received any Gateway P-79xx yet, because they are not available...

Apparently, only TigerDirect have had some Gateway P-7908u Models in stock...So, I decided to Contact them to check if the Model P-7908u was available and ready to ship...And I received the following reply
    (01.Nov.2009):

    ------------------------

The Gateway P-7908u FX Laptop Computer is currently in stock and is ready for shipping.

Based on its specifications, its display type is HD Widescreen WXGA+ Ultrabright™ LCD Display.

We sincerely apologize but we do not have available information on when the Gateway P-7915u FX Edition will be available on our website. You may visit the website from time to time for product updates.

    Maureen

    ------------------------

Unfortunatelly, when I decided to place my order at TigerDirect for one Gateway P-7908u, all of them vanished fast!

I really don´t know what is hapening with the release of the new FX Models, may be Gateway is preparing or installing the new Windows7?...The true is that they are taking so long to release these new FX Models that I´m starting to believe that there is some problem and that they could take month to start distribution to all the dealers...

Since, Gateway is taking so long to release the new FX Models, I am starting to consider others Similar Laptops, like the Gateway P-7805u FX (Available at TigerDirect $999.99) or P-7809u FX and some others from Asus...

I have found at Buy.com an Asus G71GX-RX05 Refurbished Laptop for US$935.99, that comes with Core2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M, 17.1" WXGA, 6GB Memory and 500GB HDD...

    http://www.buy.com/prod/asus-g71gx-...-53ghz-17-1-wxga-6gb/q/loc/101/212446724.html

TigerDirect also have this Asus G71GX-RX05 Refurbished available:

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...=F12-170004&srkey=Asus G71GX-RX05 Refurbished

I am aware that this Asus G71GX-RX05 Model have experienced in the past some problems with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M (Asus G71GX-RX05 stops once it hits 82C, and FPS Drops to 5 during gaming), but apparently the latest 1704 Bios have Fixed all the Problems ...

Does anyone owns this Asus Model or knows something about it?

Thanks again for all your help!!!

I've also considered some of the Asus models, specifically the G51j with the i7. Even if you add a $175 9 cell battery to that, the battery life will only be 2-3 hours vs the 3-4 on the Gateway for a much lower price. Sigh... The thing that keeps me coming back to the Gateway is the battery life. I also need this laptop to last quite a few years and I've heard too many bad things about the Asus cooling system and how hot they run for me to have confidence in the longevity of their current lineup.

Do you know if another battery can be placed in the Gateway P-7915u FX to boost the battery life from 3-4 hours to around 5 hours?

AgnusDei, I really don't think so. After a quick Google search the only ones I could find were 12 cells for their cheaper laptops, which are lower capacity anyways. The 9 cell that comes with it already gives some of the best battery life on any gaming laptop I've ever seen, so I'm pretty content with that. It would probably be exorbitantly big and expensive anyways. The 9 cell already sticks out a decent amount and the 9 cell for the Asus G51 costs $175 so I would assume a 12 cell would cost even more. It's just not worth it to get an extra 1-2 hours of life. For me at least...

I've bought a few items from Buy.com and had no problems, so I see no reason not to recommend them. Items were shipped in a timely manner, arrived on time, and were as advertised.

    Have not used ElectronicaDirect.

It seems that only the Gateway P-7908u FX Models are appearing...Does Someone here have seen any Gateway P-7915u FX anywhere in Stock and Ready to Ship?

I am asking, because I only had found in stock the Gateway P-7908u, but the Gateway P-7915u FX is always Backordered?

Well, I think it's a rolling fulfillment situation. I ordered mine on October 25th, so I was probably one of the first to order and thus one of the first to receive. They probably have many more orders than actual laptops received right now.

To put it fairly, it was about 2.5 weeks from order to shipping, which isn't far from their estimate.

Cuz BestBuy is going to wave their magic wand and make laptops that didn't exist in their warehouse suddenly appear?

I mean... I'm not BestBuy's biggest fan by any stretch. I'd rather shop at MicroCenter and I order 99% of my PC parts from Newegg. However, raising hell with BestBuy won't get you anything if Gateway hasn't shipped laptops that it probably doesn't have, yet. I'm willing to bet that demand for these was unexpectedly high and Gateway went "Oh, EFF!!! We have more orders than we have laptops being manufactured!"

Thanks GilmourD, for your fast reply!

I think that I will have to order my P-7915u from Best Buy, before you receive yours on Wednesday the 18th.

I also was interested in the ASUS G72GX-RBBX05:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...lack/9556125.p?skuId=9556125&id=1218124208054

That have almost the same Price and Tech.Apec as the Gateway P-7908u and also a Bigger and apparently Better Display and More Memory:

    -17.3" LED-backlit LCD high-definition plus widescreen display 1600 x 900 resolution.

    -6GB DDR2 memory DDR2 (Not DDR3 Like the Gateways)

But have read some Bad reviews about the shiny exterior of the news G72GX, and I am confuse and would appreciate if someone here could compare these
two models, and recommend me wich is a better option...

I was actually just in Best Buy and they had a G72 out on display... Strangely, the thing that bothers me the most about it is the touchpad.

What I've heard that is a HUGE detractor about the G72 is that the GTX260m is apparently not clocked to full speed and it's cooling is also inferior to that of the Gateway.

After reading in the forum Positives and Negatives reviews about the asus G71GX, G72GX and the New Gateway´s P-7915u-P-7908u Laptops, I have noted that apparently both computer have the same Prices and Tech.Apec.

I found that all in the forum have mentioned that the New Gateway´s FX have better Cooling (2 Separate Blowers for CPU GPU), and that ASUS ones still are experiencing problems with Graphic-Card (Underclocked) and hot temperatures (Because they have only one Blower for both CPU and GPU)...
Someone also had mentioned that the Gateway 1440x900 Display Don´t have good viewing angles and that it is the same as the Old FXs.

But what About the Warranty and Cust Support Service from Gateway...

No one have Here had mentioned here Acer´s financial problem (Gateways Tawanees Parent Company)...

So, I Agree the New Gateways FX are the Best and have better Colling Systems, but What about the Warranty and Post Warranty Service with a company that we dont know if will be here next year?

Escuse me to be so clear, I would like to buy the new gateway P-7915u-P, but I am worried about the Acer Financial Problems and Bad Customer Service that I am Reading in others forums and Reviews...

Honestly gateway's customer service is irritating and sucks something terrible... But so does most other's

Their warrenty department will fix your issue, but it might take alot of hassle (probably a decent bit more than you should have to deal with)

But as always i recommend the Bestbuy warrenty/Accident protection. Its a much better plan and if the worst happens (even 3 years down the road) you will be able to get full replacement value for your machine.

As to Acer and money troubles... i doubt that is anything to really be worried about. Its kinda like the airlines always going bankrupt... yet still working as if nothing happened. Its just business as usual

    But as always YMMV

Agree Kamin_Majere...May be all warranty departments from others companies have same problems, very slow repairs and Bad Customer Services.

BTW, What 2 or 3 Years Warranty/Accident Protection plan from Bestbuy Do you Recommends me?...Do you know the Bestbuy.com Link?

As I mentioned Before, I was a little worried with Gateways´s Waranty and Spare Parts, But I already Know that the New Gateways FX are the Best and have Better Colling Systems...

So, I am Still decided to get the P-7915u, even trough I am aware that I will have to get a separate and more effiecient extended waranty service.

Thanks for help and for Always reply to all my Requests!!

I think the warranty choices have changed at Bestbuy quite abit in the past few months.. It started with there TVs where they used to offer 4 year warrantys and now they are all 2 years for the same price..

I checked the price of the 2 year warranty on this $1049 machine and it was something like $299.00 for 2 years, might have been $249.00 but far from a bargain at almost or above 25% of the value of the machine...

Honestly it would be best for what ever you feel comfortable paying. I originally bought the 3 year with my first 6860, but after it was destroyed i ended up getting just the 1 year on my replacement unit.

I typically will get a new computer about every 2 years so thats pretty much my sweet spot for warrentys. If nothing has went wrong in 2 years i've wasted a bit of money, but nothing that i'd miss because if the worst happens and the notebook becomes damaged or the mobo fries or something i now have the ability to get a new one for a (basically) a fraction of the cost of a new one. Plus the unlimited free repairs during those two years is always nice if we (the boards) cant figure out the fix :D

Yeah its a large chunk of money, but for about 10 dollars a month (for 2 years) its nice peace of mind that you get unlimited repairs and a replacement if something really bad does happen

Thanks GilmourD for your fast reply... I am Aware that the ASUS GTX260m is apparently not clocked to full speed and that the cooling system is also inferior compared to the Gateway´s FX Models, but You have mentioned that what bother you most of this Asus G72 Model is the touchpad... Why, What is Wrong with it?...

I've heard that Somewhere that the New G72 TouchPad Don´t have Blue-Leds like the Oldest ASUS G71 Models...Do you noted Something More?

Thanks Kamin_Majere for all your considerations conserning the 1, 2 or 3 Years Extended Warranty Plans!...But, I think That I had Read that Gateways also have an Extended Warranty Plan, Do you or Someone knows Something About it?

Thanks Again for all you Help.!... And GilmourD Remember to Post Some Review or Pictures if you at last Receive your P-7915u Tomorrow Wednesday the 18th!!

I worte a review on the asus fourm yes the touch pad did get anoying but you can also trun it off all in all i wasnt happy with the perfourmance of the
G72 in my eyes it wasnt worth the money i tryed to overclock the card to match stock speed with a slight voltage bump but it seemed unstable my buddy was getting more with his 1080P res on his gateway 9800gts then i was on my GTX260.
