I'm already running the raid =( I take it, it won't work if I'm running raid? Also I have one more question when I play flash videos like youtube sometimes the video will stick for a sec (the auto keeps going and the video catches back up) but it plays fine when I play a movie. AVI, or QT. Any clue since I remember you talking about yourself having video playback lag

hey guys, anyone post some numbers on battery life from raid 1/0?
i'm about to buy another drive, for raid 1, but i'm concerned i'll lose like 30mins if i do...anyone care to check for me? with a single drive on battery, i get typically 3:20-3:30 hours with screen on low and wifi on.

i usually let it run for about 5 mins, check emaill etc then see what the battery says.

how about raid? please take a second to look for me

    99% = 2hr 50 min.. 97% = 2hr 26 min.. 96% = 2hr 39 minutes..

Really though, I dont think the one extra drive is gonna make a world of difference. And if ya cut out some unneeded services, use a different power plan..there's plenty of ways to get more battery life. :)

    Thanks dude! much appreciated!
my concern was that my battery life would fall to like 2 hours or so, but that doesn't seem to be the case. it was my last reservation before taking the plunge... 2x 320gb seagate 7200.3's on their way.

    Interesting and funny!

Hey, E-wrecked! What program or util do you use to o/c and monitor your GPU? I know I've probalby run across it in the forum here, but I get discombobulated when I try to search for sumpin'.... Heh, sorta like trying to find something on the web.... after about 10 minutes and 1/2 dozen different directions following those various links of interest, I sometimes forget what the heck I sat down to do.... argh!

Ok so back with some more news about the "Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive" since it keeps trying to go into and come out of sleep mode (the clicking nose it will make when the drive is in use) it locks up video for 2 secs, the audio will keep playing and the video will catch back up.

I'm playing a movie in AVI format off my desktop for testing. Now if WD can not provide some kind of fix I will be forced to RMA the drives and go with Seagates. This sucks, how can they not provide a new fix to this issue? Do they not want to turn a profit?

lol, it just sucks no one takes pride in anything when it comes to hardware. A 100 bucks or 1k it shouldn't matter when it comes to making sure its a quality product, I mean I would of paid an extra 50 to 100 bucks to not have to go and waste more of my **** time. Just pass the buck down to the consumer because you the manufacture added the extra TLC to make sure the product is top notch.

If Seagate can do it, why not WD?

OH and Dook I have heard, haven't you heard that the bird is the word, baa baa baa bird bird bird, bird is the word - Family guy

Ok..sounds like we had similar problems. The first time I went RAID I had the exact same issues..now, no problems. Couple of questions/idea.

What stripe size did you use? I did 128kb originally, now 64kb stripes.

Are indexing and superfetch on? Both have to learn, and collect data..after a while their interference goes away.

Have you downloaded the newest Chipset and RAID drivers? Try downloading here

Not sure if it was the chipset/driver utils..or vista finally finishing spinning my hard drives, but all is smoothe as could be now. Lemme know how it works for ya :) - And I'd try the drivers before changing stripe sizes ;)

    Oh..and they don't click in AHCI/IDE modes..only in RAID

    E-Wrecked here is my info:

    1) I didn't see a stripe for Raid 1. Are stripes only for Raid 0?
    2) Where can I turn on Indexing and superfetch?
    3) Nope haven't downloaded the newest chipset/ raid drivers. I will try that and report my results. Only downloaded what was on gateway's website.

Didn't know they only clicked in RAID, why is that?

Superfetch and Indexing are both in your services menu

Click Start then in the Run box type Services and you will see them in there.

And there both on by default .

Ya i forgot to mention it had a different name in vista . You can try turning them both off and see if you like that better . i turn mine off as i dont like all the harddrive thrashing on and having my favorite apps loaded into ram is of no importance to me nor is the search as i know where i put stuff and you can still search it just may take a second or 2 longer.

I thought I was going crazy the first time I booted Vista and saw no Indexing service. I swear I scrolled through that list like 5 times before it dawned on me. I actually found it by accident when disabling Windows Defender. :D

I did a search it came up with nothing, that's why I asked if they changed it in vista, just wondering since both Superfetch and Windows Defender are in the services menu.

ok got it, but help me understand. How is indexing info making the drive make a clicking noise? It comes back to WD and its broke a$$ tech thinking windows is going into sleep mode. When I get home I'll try updating the newest Chipset and RAID drivers so see if that stops it.

    I just installed a couple Hitachi 320's RAID-0 and Vista Ultimate 64.

I then installed the new Intel Matrix Storage 8.5 controller which seems to offer me nothing beyond what I had besides a slightly higher burst rate (but still miserable)

I have write cache enabled in drive properties.

    Any other suggestions.

As far as I can tell the video isn't skipping anymore after the clicks, so that's one problem out of the way and one more to go (the **** clicking). I could get used to it but I look at it this way, I want that sucker to click on me when its going to die not just do it because someone halfa$$ed the hardware. Thank you guys for helping me problem solve and thank you E-wrecked for the heads up on the drivers!

do yourself a favor and enable write back cache from within the matrix storage manager console.

and then you should see burst rates like this

Seems to work well.. I'll post HWMonitor temp pics later.. the stuff does look odd though, eh? My temps dropped bout 4-5c though.. and TZS0 didn't downclock nearly as fast. Then again, I had the wifi module removed while testing.. maybe it is an issue? Im just pointing fingers at anything that seems suspicious :p

actually...when i enabled write back cache through drive properties, it showed disabled in MSM console, and i had a slow burst speed like you. but if you right click on the array_0000, you should see an option to enable write back cache and get the higher burst speed.
