If we keep this up I expect Dook to post one with 63,000+ MB/sec.![]()
Oh ya my stripe is 32. I didn't want 2 volumes so picked a happy medium.
-
-
I win......... -
dammn dook...aint you the photoshop king.. *LOL*
-
I knew it - another world record by the Dookster.
-
LOL. What can I say? I have a machine handed down from God. Either that or Photoshop CS3.
-
that's because dook ps3 some 5400's instead of some 7200's...lol
-
lol. Good call. Actually I just reused whomevers HDTune jpeg that was already in the thread. Too lazy to find where I stashed mine.
-
exactly. i used 5400's in that image.
-
Haha@me not remembering it was you whom I stole the image from. I'm gettin old, I tell ya..........
-
stole shole...what's a image or two amongst friends...*L*
-
Haha. Exactly.
-
Now I realized what is causing the CPU fan to spin all the time...It is when you come out of standby. Before standby, it just runs when it need to.
-
OK rebooted and installed newest Intel chipset driver ... little performance gain on HD. If I had it to do over again, I would avoid the chipset driver (maybe) and let Vista handle things. Some quirkiness now but maybe it will settle down.
-
just in case you we're wondering...my stripe size was 16kb.
-
If I were more ambitious I would image and redo the stripe but probably won't bother now.
-
20 minutes to image with acronis
2 minutes to stripe
20 minutes image back
just in case you wanted to..
64kb is not giving the stutter right? if not... all is good. -
I'm 32 but all is smooth.
I'm not sure the higher burst is all that big a deal. Of course it will bug me until I do it. -
TBH, it's not. I ran a few tests both with it on and with it off(wbc) and there was very little difference. It certainly doesn't hurt, however.
-
Good to know. Of course I'm a sucker for big numbers so will leave it on.
-
Roger that! On your other note, I imaged my 3 partitions(almost 300gb!!) with the thought of changing the stripe size just to try 64kb out. But I really have no issue with a 128kb stripe and I'm kind of anti-ambitious ATM, so I dunno. I know 128kb(and previous to that, 256kb) stripe size was the perfect balance on my desktop, but most here prefer 64kb(and possibly lower). I may try it one of these days when I get bored......
-
I'm just the opposite (I'm with you on anti-ambitious however). I've always used smaller stripes (out of ignorance) but always liked the performance. I was going to try larger this time but after using the calculations you gave me, I decided 32 was about right for my file sizes. I would have gone smaller on the OS if I had done 2 volumes but slothfulness was in full bloom so I went with one volume.
But now for $120 I have 600GB of fast storage and I'm a happy man. -
Ya, I hear ya there. I may try it this week, who knows. Thank God for the SATA port, tho. It took like an hour to image 300gb. I can't even imagine how long it would have taken via USB. Yikes.
PS: PM Chaz and have him drop you in the senior user group so you can create a uber-whitty Title.
-
well go ahead and get board so i can know what the hell i was doing wrong at 128kb!! i dont like not knowing the answer to certain questions.
edit: i was wondering about that witty title group. -
LOL. I'll see what I can do.
-
Any recommendations on eSATA drive? Newegg has a slim and off breed selection. I don't really know what's up with eSATA or what to look for.
Edit: I have now broken the 24 hour rep limit. Another benchmark for yours truly. -
thank you sir!. i had way to many request going on all at the same time. and each of these task as you know takes time to document, test, trial & error then come with an answer. only for some 1 post person to come in and nitpicking why your drive reads 298.65 instead of 320.00.(examples of fun) *LOL* some of them folks we're killing me...not seeing the big picture. Raid0 working.
-
if you already have a spare 3.5" drive, i recommend this enclosure as it is actively cooled and used by Dook and I.
if not, western digital has some pretty good externals. i used to use the 1TB My Book Essential edition till i tore the drive out of the case and put it in the antec enclosure. -
I actually built my own. I used the Antec MX-1 fan cooled enclosure and a WD 500gb 16mb cache hard drive. It costs more than pre-built externals and is a bit larger in size, but it keeps the drive really cool and is built like a tank. It has both USB2.0 and SATA and comes with a SATA cable and everything else needed, even backplate for your desktop to convert ISATA to ESATA if needed.
EDIT:Great minds think alike.
-
well duh...
edit: go figure that i just happen to have deleted my HD tune results comparing USB to eSATA using the same drive....though...i could use the USB cable that came with it. only if someone really wants the HDtune results though -
Thanks to you both. That must be the reason there are not many pre-builts available. Those in the know build their own.
1- Antec MX-1 USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure on order from la NewEgg. -
i'm thinking about picking up a dual bay esata enclosure and another 1TB drive. i'm down to ~ 300 gb on my external.
what are your thoughts?
and no, i will not be running raid 1 on the externals...that would defeat the purpose of getting another drive. -
Ok, it's about time I update the thread.. There has been some bad news handed down to me from BIOSMAN's CFO Stacy. She said that BIOSMAN is unfortunately unable to assist with unlocking the 9c.08.00 BIOS for overclocking. I will send a new Email to Wistron tonight just to see if there is any hope left there. Surely, if someone else would like to assist and take the initiative, please feel free to post the BIOS on some forums for BIOS editing. Maybe someone out there can unlock the secrets
I'm also adding the 9c.05.00 BIOS link to the first page of this thread. I picked up a 7811FX with the P2887 BIOS, and it has made me question myself.. I've had recurring issues with TZS0 due to my x9100 CPU. It will throw the sensor all out of whack, and jump to 98c for no good reason. This doesn't happen with the 9c.05.00 BIOS. It didn't happen until I had the 9c.08 BIOS..I don't think. The only other reason that tzs0 may stay in check is that this rig came with a different heatsink than the newer models.
The newer models seem less..sturdy, and are definately smaller all the way around. Maybe the chipset heatsink(not the copper side), is large enough to dissipate the heat. Anyhow, it's all theory at this point..but I can run 3dmark and never have tzs0 spike to 98c with this heatsink and this BIOS. If I upgrade to 9c.08 BIOS, then it is over. So, either I go RAID or have basic stability without undervolting the CPU. *shrugs* I'll still have to use RMClock to run any games.. Oh well.
Here's the link to the 9c.05.00 BIOS Windows Version for anyone interested in "downgrading". DOS bootdisk version is here. Temps seem better with the 9c.08 BIOS, except for me personally..with TZS0. I'm not recommending anyone revert to the 9c.05 BIOS unless you have had similar problems as myself. But remember, no RAID, and temps will rise!
-
did you happen to ask about the 94.29 bios????
-
diablo, I asked about both.. he isn't able to assist. Im not sure that he didnt just give up with the 9c.08 BIOS and then figure the other was the same. Lemme email him from my other email addy and see what he has to say
-
either way...+rep for trying.
-
Downloading V27 and V28 since I doubt we're going to get any more after this.
-
is it risky to flash back to a previous version of your bios?
-
that's a big 10/4 negative. flash back if you need too.
-
BIOS flash is always a risk of sorts. It is encouraging that no one here has experienced a problem.
-
I think I like 9C.08.00 better than 9C.10.00.
-
So the machine that I had put in for a bios update (before I got BB to agree to just give me a knew 7811, for those of you who know my story) just got finished and BB called me to go pick it up, I guess not realizing that they already replaced it for me with a brand new one that already had the bios. Ugh, if I were an immoral person I could have two 7811's right now, but I told them they're supposed to keep it
-
Kudos Mr. Jakamo5. +rep for honesty.
-
-
lol but since they only took the laptop and battery in for service, I now have an extra power cord and brick, oem recovery disc, manual etc.
-
jak, the guy from canda..zubzub, he wouldnt mind getting ahold of that extra CD
-
Meh. Canadians still live in igloos and don't have running water or electricity! What the hell are they gonna do with a CD????
Disclaimer. I'm totally kidding.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
HaHa. Good call.

Please ship me the CD, I will pay shipping.
