Here is the reply from WD:
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support.
I recommend that download and run our Windows diagnostic utility to perform an Extended Test on your hard drive. You probably have a bad sector on the drive that is preventing you from completing a disk scan or properly reading/writing files. The Extended Test should be able to repair or remove the bad sector and make your disk usable again.

You may need to replace your drive if it fails any of the diagnostics tests. I recommend that you try re-running the diagnostic after swapping the drive's power/data cables in addition to the EIDE or SATA port connected to the drive.

I also have a question/ problem with the laptop. Since I'm I'm using 9C.08.00 for raid when I tried to hit F2 while it was booting it made the beep sound letting me know I hit the right key but then it doesn't even go into the BIOS just right to windows. Anyone else have this issue or can anyone help? If I spam the F10 key it goes into the Boot menu fine and I can access the BIOS from the boot menu but I can't via F2
-
guru, that's the only way to access bios with 9c.08. You gotta use the F10 tapping method
And are you gonna send em in for warranty repairs/replacment?
-
yep I couldn't have any downtime so I bought two new Seagates and I'm going to send the WDs back. As much as I want to waste hours and hours trying to find work arounds just to make the drive do what its supposed to do.
-
Well I've learned if there are no differences between drives then use the brad that came with your laptop, lesson learned =)
-
i dunno man..those seagates run awfully hot compared to the WD.. do you not notice the same?
-
I wonder if the P-7811's could take the 45nm Penryn Quad Core processors? Or would it over heat and assplode?
-
I have the bottom open as I'm reinstalling Vista 64, feels the same to me, Just like the WDs I could cook an egg on them =)
-
The heat won't be an issue.. the chip uses same power as x9100, it's just a matter of the BIOS supporting it or not. And so far, no one has proven it does.
-
Hmmm I take it gateway won't care about updating the BIOS since the will want to sell their ver of the quadcore. Also the chips I'm sure will be over 1k =(
-
Did I lose temp reading ability with RAID-0 and my 2 Hitachi drives? Or didn't I ever have temp readings I wonder? ... they have always been raid so don't know. Pondering the universe?????
-
Syn, prolly lost it..with your mind.
-
I lost temp readings when I went RAID. I think this is pretty normal occurrence as just about everyone I've talked to can no longer get HD temp readings. I'm not too much of a temp nazi, so it never really bothered me much.
-
Which is the best BIOS version currently available?
-
not sure there is a "best". the new gateways ship with the 9c.08.00 BIOS which enables RAID. However, the 9c.05.00 BIOS has a different kernel and ACPI table, and doesn't support RAID but does offer a *bit* more stability. It all depends on what you're looking for. If you're runnin a P8400 stock, and want RAID..then 9c.08 all the way. There's no need to try 9c.09 or 9c.10, regardless.
-
just trying to download the new BIOS but can't seem to do it. anyone else having issues?
-
I just tried and theY download....I can send them to you if you want?
-
HA OK I've never cared on desk tops so didn't notice and have not run raid on laptop before. It's all this temp talk around here that made me look. Dang people drive a guy crazy with all their dad gum talkin'
-
I had a potential buyer on Ebay ask about my feedback.. I obviously don't have any cause I've never managed to sell anything online. Well, I gave him the link to these forums. Just so he knows I am actually selling the thing.. So, if in the next 45 minutes someone is looking for feedback, he's askin bout me.
-
E-wrecked who?
-
Ohhh! E-Wrecked! The one who stole my grandmas cane to buy crack for the 3 4year old kids he kidnapped from Circle-K! I know him!
-
Syn, imquattro is his ebay name. Not sure who he is..but was asking how I could prove my reputation without any feedback. Directed him to these forums, and told him to look for the BIOS for 7811. I shoulda just gave him the link to this page
But, hell find it. And Dook, I thought we made amends.. I smoked ya out!
-
Whoops. My bad. I forgot.
And no worries, We'll all put in a good word for ya. -
Well, auction ends in 30 minutes.. He just re-bid, so I assume that means he at least stopped by and looked around. But, thanks guys for the references(sp?)
-
Would be nice to slap one of these in the P-7811, http://www.pcsforeveryone.com/Product/Intel/AW80581GH051003
-
Ya it would be great to know if they worked for sure or not .
But $999 is just stupid expensive. -
the x9100 performs much better, for same cost.. quad-core isn't going to be fully optimized for a hot minute.
-
Could you please provide the exact scientific equivalent of "a hot minute"?
-
yes.. if you could wait just a hot minute, then I could assist ya. That was being used in a sentence.. Please, see link..and lemme know what you find out in a hot minute.
-
Well hot is
minute? who cares? -
@syn
lol... definitely...
-
Ok, just an update on BIOS support. The Quad-core support is available for the 7811FX. Here's the email from Maggie from Wiston:

Dear Erik,
For Quad Core CPU, the BIOS is ready, but you need to request the Gateway/Acer for releasing.
I won't be able to provide you the BIOS from development side, sorry.
for any concern or question, please kindly let me know. thank you.

Not sure if she means the 9c.10 BIOS or not..and I will inquire. But, guess I gotta call Gway back about my BIOS issue again!
-
oh shiz
10 charmanders -
Hell yea E-W!!! Perfect! I lawlz at ppl who are going to spend 4k+ on quad core Laps!
-
I hope it has sliders for Extreme CPU!
-
BMW, I wouldnt count on that one..but ya never know! I emailed Chris @ Gway and if I don't get a response by tomorrow morning then I'll make a call. Anyhow, I'll keep y'all posted.
-
This may be a very stupid question but does this confirm that the 7811 will fully support quad core? Does it have the right hardware/heatsink etc?
-
That's what I'm wondering. I mean, right now, I've never seen my CPU go past 55C wit folding@home smp client running.
-
One thing I'm wondering is what if the ES Q9100 and the retail chip differ in the way that the die package is different. Perhaps the Q9100 BMW got was a VERY early model.
-
it was an A0 stepping (maybe?) which is definitely early.
the retail is E0. -
Well, let's see if BMW can OC his cpu.
got a copy of the PB BIOS, thread is here..
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=312573
It does have quad support, and it's a revised 9c.10.00 BIOS. Supposed to be compatible with 7811. If not, flash back and forget it.
-
It was an A1 which does now show model number in CPUZ like all the others...I figure it didn't recognize because it never shut off ..just didn't post.
E my man ...I will wait till i see someone flash and get back into windows
-
BMW, if ya like I can assist you with a backup plan in case there are any issues. Lemme know
-
Ok guys.. here's the word from Wistron. The 9c.10.00 BIOS does not fully support Quad-core. The 7811FX and other FX series *can* OC past 3.0GHz. Here's the email response from last night:

Dear Eirk,
Below is the reply for your concern:
1. I have no idea who works in Gateway can make the decision for your request, sorry.
2. with your current Gateway system (IMV), you won't be able to use Quad core cpu, but yes you will be able to use the dual core exterme CPU.
3. for overclock feature, BIOS can make the X9100 (dual extreme CPU) clock above 3.0GHz, but there is possibility to make your system to become unstable.
** for over clock featuer, intel has announice that they don't warranty that system can keep stable. (there is official doc)
For any concern or question, please kindly let me know.
thank you.

Subject: RE: 9c.10.00 BIOS support
Margaret,
I spoke with Gateway Tech Support today, I was told that I'll need to contact corporate to have them send you an email for my request. The tech support team doesn't have authorization to provide it, because it will void my warranty with the new CPU installed. I know you say I must contact Gateway/Acer support team.. Who do I need to contact to release authorization? Is there someone in particular that I have to get to contact you?
Also, does BIOS 9c.10.00 provide quad core support? If so, then I don't need to keep contacting Gateway. Or, is there a BIOS that I am unaware of for Quad core support? One final question, if Gatewy contacts you, can you allow the BIOS to overclock past 3.0GHz with the x9100? I know you are a busy person, I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to assist me. If possible, please assist with all of the previous questions. Thanks so much!
Erik G.
So, looks like Gateway isn't supporting Quad core. Altho, she sent me an email previously saying it is supported. *shrugs* And she still says it can be OC'd.. they just have to implement it. I'll see if someone at Gateway Corporate office can be of assistance. -
Kamin_Majere =][= Ordo Hereticus
So basically they are telling us what we already knew.
We "can" overclock higher they just wont let us...gits
Maybe they will throw us a bone and send out a good BIOS that will allow for most everything. Lets face it the people that are going to do this are all running XCPU chips anyway so have already voided their warrenty. What should it matter if we want to hit 5.8gHz in a laptop
-
Heck, I was wanting to push it to 9.86GHz, and get my money's worth out of the CPU!
Gonna find corp. office # now and give em a call. They probably just have an email and snail mail
-
Hey E- did you ever enquire about the Tzs0 bug ? maybe we could get an official response right from the horses mouth.
-
9.86ghz? wth?! is that possible?
-
Can you please warn people that the flash will not allow you to backup your existing bios (at least the win64 version didn't)?
I would have liked to save a copy of my original bios, but as soon as I ran the unzipped file, it began to flash.
Luckily, nothing has seemed to go wrong and it rebooted just fine, but it was just a tad bit scary for a while.
Thanks. -
zmokin, scroll down to the bottom of my original post. You can download the 9c.05.00 BIOS there, so you have no need to backup. And it is scary, eh? I warned ya up front!
Quad; tzs0.. tzs0.. may be the instability part Maggie mentioned. I found out there is a temp sensor under the CPU, and near the chipset. Just not sure what the hell the sensor looks like. And I still say it's a false reading..cause I've read through the entire Powerbook (PB GX) thermal tables, and if there is a temp problem it first downclocks CPU..then vista shuts down, then worse case scenario book turns off. That's all Via BIOS. Well, if RMClock overides vista, the BIOS should still shut down if there is a real problem. And through my research, the GX will supply 15Watts more power to the board than the current setup. *doh* Quad, maybe that new BIOS will fix it! I just remembered the voltage increase over the previous boards. This may be the answer. Cause the board is currently having problems with the power distribution(hence TZS0)! Short answer, no I didnt ask. I don't think those level 2 folks would provide a solid answer, except for "send it in for repair".
Also I did call the escalated problem hotline..and they're supposed to respond by this afternoon regarding whether or not they can send Wistron an email on my behalf for an unlocked multiplier.
gimme a sec..gonna review some info on new powerbook. will be back in a bit. ok, here's the screen shot of the new power setup.
i didnt dig through the whole manual, this is just one excert..there is one a bit more detailed, but you get the jest of it. -
I was thinking the new bios would fix it , the thermals of the Quads have to be higher and theres no way the TZs0 would freak out everytime you did something CPU intensive on the quad because then there would be no point of having a quad at all if it throttled everytime you maxxed out the CPU .
