I guess if someone with a 7808u could share his BIOS, this would be possible-

I just don't know if GW is willing to simply let potential cash flow go for the sake of pleasing non-quad 78XX owners--

WOW, so much for a double post. The Q9100 and QX9300 aren't priced that badly either. I can't sell my CPU because if I needed to warranty the notebook I would need to get it back to factory condition.

lol wow how many posts are you gonna make? lol
and i dont want to rummage through the 100 pages of this thread, so i have 2 questions.

1. is overclocking support available? at least through software?
2. is quad core supported?

thanks

Why did my post get deleted? Is there something wrong with the forum?

My comments were about how you need your OLD CPU for warranty purposes (notebook factory condition) and the q9100 costing under $400 and qx9300 costing around $500. Also about the odd double posts.

What the heck, my post was deleted AGAIN!

This is my third time posting this, quad cores are getting cheaper even though new new models have been released so I really would like to see Gateway release the newest bios.

There we have it, a non working quad system. It not like people with the higher BIOS won't share, it that we haven't been able to get a working BIOS dump.

I'm jealous of your quad, even if we don't have a working BIOS yet, just the fact you have one.

Then we can all complain to <add your favorite expletive here> GW for not selling the heatsink!!!

That answers the question if alone the 9c.17.00 will give quad core's to the present P78xx's. Not the answer alot were looking for though........ :(

Edit; It does stave the mad rush for quad core cpu's and inevitable price increase from lack of supply...........

This is a little off topic, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I sold the original 7805 that I had and bought another one - Seller's remorse :) - and I noticed that the heatsink on the new one is different than the one that I had previously. It has a revision sticker on it that makes me believe it is a revised heatsink, and it definately looks slightly larger in diameter than the old one.

Wonder if this would work with a Quad? Of course, there's the small matter of getting a working bios first. ;)

When did you get it? What's your current BIOS? Can you take the measurement so that we can compare with pmassey31545's heatsink? Because with his HS, there was about 1/8 (pls correct me here) inch that did not cover the CPU.

I'm running the .17 bios on it. When I get the chance, I'll measure the heatsink.

1/8" is correct. I'll measure the square copper portion so we all can have a reference. If in fact it is larger, that may be good news. Just maybe there is a forthcoming BIOS for Quads..........I Hope...

Or they just stopped producing the old heatsink production to move onto the 7808, since it cheaper to just produce one instead of 2.

Someone is bound to end up buying a 7808 even though it only has a q9000, we should get to see the new bios then.

Well guys I haven't posted here in a few months since everything has been fine with my P-7811 fx but a few weeks ago my Laptop was acting weird. It wouldn't turn on even if I plugged in my power supply. I left it charging over night and tried it the next day and it turned on from there thought nothing of it. Well the same thing happened again but this time it didn't turn back on. I called gatway and they sent me another power supply and that didn't fix it.

Two guys here at work have the same model so I swapped the battery tried their power supply's and nothing. I don't understand why out of no where it would just stop working. Has anyone have this happen to their P-7811 FX?

Also Gatway wants me to send it in but since I changed the BIOS and put in two other drives (raid 1) I'm affraid they will tell me I VOID my warranty because of what I did, I can put back the old HD but will the BIOS look for my Raid 1 drives and not work at all if they get it to turn on?

Please if anyone can help I would very much appreciate it =)

Just remove one of the drives and do a factory install, they don't know which BIOS shipped with it.

The hard drive that came with the unit is factory install. Can I remove my drives and just install the one it came with? Also what might the problem be? I'm guessing with PCs it can be anything but what might it be?

I actually pulled mine(about 10 minutes ago) and took pics and measured. The lengthXwidth is 3/4" by 3/4". The diagonal is 1-1/8". Thats the actual copper on the sink itself that contacts the CPU. That is the measurement we need. How do you post those thumbnails as such. My pictures are HUGE!! Sorry. [IMG][/IMG]

hey guys, i've just register to the forum but i read the thread and wanted to ask something for clarification about installing the qx9300:
so assuming you have the larger heatsink from the new 78xx installed (it can be installed on older 78xx right?) can the qx9300 physically sit on it just fine?
what would happen if you put it but have a non-quad support bios? (9c.12.00 for example)
i'm assuming nobody made the wet dream of putting a qx9300 in a gateway come true yet..

That's the correct device :)

And that heatsink pictured is my fav when it comes to TZS0 problems, but I too doubt it will work with quad as it's smaller copper contact area prolly won't cut it. But that's the same sink some of the 7811s came with, and it works well. :)

I'll tell you this 7811CY, I installed a Q9100 and system won't boot or POST. Powers on but no POST. And I have the latest BIOS-9C.17.00. Only one that is newer to my knowledge is the one for the 7808u and it also has a Quad. So that's what we're all trying to get our hands on. I say E-wrecked should go buy one and figure it out cause he seems pretty knowledgeable about the subject and process. LOL!!

You don't know 'bout E-wrecked do ya? ;) most folks consider me an original pioneer of the 7-series FX. Who you think originated propping the rear of the system for cooling? Or the tzs0 workaround..I'm still holding the record @11.4k for 3dMark06 - I know a thing or two ;) *breaks arm patting own back*

Seriously though, quad isn't gonna work til gateway leaks/releases a BIOS newer than what I've already acquired.

That's a respectable score on 3dmark, but you should try at 1280.1024 resolution to compare apples to apples. That will change your score a bit..prolly around 10-10.2k.

And the gts with more memory, that really won't change anything performance wise.. But it does limit you a touch if you try to overclock it. The 512 clocks are more generous.

I'm afraid Keith measured the overall size, not just the sink. We really need the size of the copper portion of the sink, then we would know if GW has future plans. But why would they(GW) give us(the consumer) that ability to upgrade. If you were selling, wouldn't you rather the customer buy a whole new comp just for Quad Core. They won't make any money when you upgrade. Just the chip manufacturer will. So, see where I'm going?>>>>>>>>>
