I don't think there's anything special about the BIOS in 7809's. It's showing the same version and release date as the one in my 7805u. My 7805U was stolen so I picked up this from frys a few days back.

If theres any other specific information you want lemme know and i can get it from dmidecode.

    mangloid@mangloid-laptop:~$ sudo dmidecode --type 0

He was asking how to use a hack to get a pirated version of win7 fully activated. Its not an acceptable topic on NBR, so i replaced his post with a note from me.

Unless you have an Extreme series CPU you can't right now, some people are trying to see if there's a hardware mod that will allow it, but so far we seem to be striking out.

It doesn't support overclocking past 3 ghz, at least in earlier revisions, so with an x9100 you're stuck, an x7800 for example can overclock to 3ghz at least.

The T9900 seems to be the best CPU so far for the p7805u, better than the X9100 because of lower temperatures and same clock speeds, given that you cannot overclock on the p7805u. Right now I'm pretty happy with my stock p8400 but I might upgrade to a T9900.

No issues from upgrading to the T9900 here. I wanna run some benches and stuff next week, namely ripping and converting Blu-ray movies, seems to be an excellent test of the CPU.

I have a brand new 7803h notebook sitting on my desk... the difference between a 15" and 17" is really weird. I got the 1440x900 screen, which I'm OK with. 1920x1200 is too punishing on my pitiful vision.

My only real complaint is the sporadic GPU fan noise. It's incredibly annoying; does anyone know which BIOS version to use for this?

If I can't solve this fan problem altogether, then I will be forced to return it.

I do believe that it is built into all the BIOS, and is unchangeable. But don't quote me on that.

Yes, I just tried the .10 and .12 BIOS. It stopped the GPU fan from sporadically spinning up, but then the CPU fan showed the same problem instead.

Screw it, I'm returning the unit. It's a shame given that it was only $990CDN.

1: you can find it here ,i have been using it for a few months now and ive had no problems with it.
2: no, you can not upgrade your GPU.
3: isnt that DDR2? these machine come with DDR3 and 4GB is plenty fine.
5: t9900 and x9100 are ok, however you can not use a quad-core (q9xx) on them, temp whize... if you undevolt and apply thermal paste you shoulb be just fine.
6: not for the gateway FX line, u can over-clock it tho ^^

No he's saying quads don't work and T9XXX etc cpus run hotter than Ps so you need to make sure you use better thermal paste etc.

You could get a quad core, just don't expect it too boot. The socket matches and one of the two types of HS's are useable as well. There is something they claim to do to the mainboard though, or at least it was stated a modification has to be made.

Find an easy way to do this though, plus get it too work, and you will be a hero to alot of people........ :)

As to question #3, I doubt the bios will recognize the timings but memset DOES work on this. I've been able to tighten the stock timings to 7-6-6-19,but memset also changes a lot of other timings at the same time so requires a lot of tweaking. I am considering purchasing the ram myself since they're only $100 or so the last time I checked, but memset may be our only option to take advantage of the tighter timings.

Can I get a copy of 9c.11.00 BIOS??? That was my original bios before I flashed to the latest version.

I've tried bios 9c.12.00 and 9c.17.00 and both seem to adjust the rate at which the CPU downclocks itself to a point where there is a noticeable slowdown in windows which I could easily replicate. It would stay at 1600 MHz for a longer period of CPU utilization before it returns back to 2260 MHz which causes a delay in the performance of the windows explorer to the point where I could see and feel the slowdown.

I'm currently on version 9c.10.00 (which does NOT have the clock throttling issue) I got from the bios variety pack in the initial posting, but since there doesn't seem to be a changelog for the various pack versions, I would like to go back to my stock BIOS which was 9c.11.00.

    Anyone else experienced this?

    Some others questions:

    0) Do you know where you can find the changelog between all BIOS versions ?
    1) 9C .xx (.17 for ex) are official BIOS ?
    2) Do you know somes "moded" BIOS for 78xx that improve our notebooks or offers more options in the bios ?

    1) Yes
    2) That amounts to priacy and is not allowed on NBR, i have warned others before you were a member so i will warn you now. Mentioning of bypasses to program/OS security measures are forbidden and if i see it again i will take action

It seems that it's impossible to modify phoenix BIOS in order to add "hidden stuff".
Only people from Winston or Gateway can do this :(

Yep. got the same issue after updating the bios to 9c.17(IatAa) from original 9c.05. Increased boottime, slow windows 7 x64. My dell inspiron 640m(....) boots faster with win 7 x32 and is far more responsive. Weird though as there don't seem too many users having this problem. Any advice or recommendations concerning this issue is well appreciated.

I don't know what others think but to me the 9C.17.00 bios from Gateway seems to make my 7805U snappier. I just up-graded to the T9900 and to me it has made my laptop into a really nice fast experience. It's the processor this thing should have came with in the first place. :)

I don't know why, butasfter you upgrade to a T9900 with the 9C.17.00, it seems to automatically overclock the cpu by 4%. Mine also runs at 3200mhz. Have it set constant high performance in the power section. :D

I've a bug too, the bus in everest is 266mhz + 4% (272 mhz something like that)
But the true bus value is always 266mhz.

Because some software does not know the halfmultiplier (11x instead of 11.5x), they increase the bus value for get the same ghz.

    3.2ghz is:
    1) A bug
    2) The "half" IDA activated (3.06 ghz + 133 mhz => 3.2 Ghz). So your windows or the bios ??? does not know half multiplier (12x 266 mhz).

Noticed that this notebook doesn't do half multipliers, guess they cut some more corners and we benefit from it (makes little sense).
