so it doesnt downclock on battery you need to turn powermizer off ( here is an app that will do it for you)

as for crysis i believe it can only be run @ 10x unless you use "ccc" ...just incase you dont know about it, its an app that optimize crysis ( get it here)

^^, thank you sentence, for helping me. But I turned it off from the first day I touch my lappy ^^.
Anyway, I'll accept it, as playing game on battery is not a good idea ^^

I am running on Max settings so Ultra High and Very Highs respectively, and in DX10. No custom configs for that game. Runs extra smooth @ framerates average > 40 fps.

If you are looking to get the same performance that you get on AC, while on battery the short answer is no, there isn't. Older games will run just fine on battery, but newer more cpu and gpu intensive games need the constant Input of electricity that only the AC can provide.

Yeah I got the clocks from you. It's funny, the artifact situation is exactly the opposite for me; it only happens when I'm playing a game.

So if I keep these clocks will I wreck my computer? I thought temp was the only thing that mattered?

Newbie here: Anyone have any simple solutions for color calibrating this baby? ICC Profiles maybe? I don't wanna fiddle with all the settings... (nvidia/windows etc...)

Also, I've been having a strange problem where my games minimize and freeze for no reason. I heard it might be because of Google Chrome, and stopping it helped somewhat, but I still see it occasionally. Any ideas? Thanks.

Don't worry, these clocks won't wreck your computer as long as the temperatures stay in a reasonable range when gaming (70-80). I can't guarantee that they won't, but I have been using them myself 24/7 and have had no problem with them. I have recently downgraded to 182.50 drivers as a test, and yes on these drivers you will get 0 artifacts and errors while gaming and when browsing @ these GPU settings (716/900/1800). The trade of these drivers is that you will get lower gaming performance. So in the end it's up to you.

Sure it's possible, but if you bought it 9 or 10 months ago you'll have to buy the upgrade yourself.

Personally while I like 7 even better than Vista, I don't think it's an absolute must upgrade for everyone. If you're keeping it a long time, or like me use your computer super heavily, it's probably worth it though, but it really is just a nice refinement to Vista (which was already a nice OS IMO).

well, since you don't qualify for the "free" upgrade.. i guess you could take a look here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/default.aspx or it may be cheaper buying else where. just search around: buy.com, bestbuy, tigerdirect, amazon, or just use google

My 2 cents worth. I find Win 7 snappier and more stable than Vista though I've only had about a month on Win 7. Win 7's window mgt. and file mgt. has some excellent embellishments that frankly I wouldn't want to give up. The indexing on 7 is the first time I've allowed indexing to actually function without a seemingly large penalty in performance. There are other niceties but those are the features that made the strongest first impression.

is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the keyboard for the hdx18 laptop is nearly identical to the gateway fx series? i was thinking buying one and figuring out a way to use it with our laptop. i was even willing to get it to replace the keys on ours and making a custom backlight. what do you guys think? i know this would probably require some serious moddage but it would be an interesting project :D

heres a link to a picture of the hdx18 keyboard with backlight.

Regarding stability-Vista and 7 should be equally stable, and should both be essentially 100% stable. Any instability is some kind of problem. Maybe hardware, maybe software. NT 6 (ie Vista/7) closes some avenues for instability that NT 5 had (which resulted ironically in some driver issues when Vista first launched, but in the long run it was the right thing to do!)

File management in Vista and 7 is pretty similar, though I've found some tweaks that make 7 better (and Vista was already better than XP, which was already pretty good).

Regarding price, the cheapest way to get Windows 7 now would be buying either the OEM version, or the upgrade version. The OEM version's catch is you're not supposed to move it to a new computer, which may or may not be a real issue for you (basically it's supposed to stay tied to the first motherboard you put it on, whereas the upgrade and retail versions let you move it to a new computer, as long as you delete it off the old one).
The other catch with OEM is there's no tech support, but that's not really much of an issue.

The upgrade version's catch is at least officially you have to already have a qualified OS installed on the hard drive you're installing it to (it DOES however let you do a clean install and format the hard drive once it's checked that you have a qualifying OS on it). So, at least officially if you reinstall, you'd have to first install your current OS (XP or Vista), and then install 7 over the top.

Retail has neither of those restrictions, but costs a lot more.

I bought a copy of 7 Home Premium and Pro, both upgrades during that half off pre-order sale in June. (Home Premium is what most people want.)

Looks like the price on Home Premium right now is:
    Upgrade:
    Amazon: $110
    Newegg: $115

    OEM:
    Newegg $107

    Retail:
    Amazon: $188
    Newegg: $189

Forgot one more catch with the OEM version-you have to choose 32 or 64-bit. The Upgrade and Retail versions come packaged with both 32 and 64-bit discs, and I *think* you can actually delete one and switch to the other if you want to (not 100% sure).

    hi
    i am interested in a p-7805u.
but i heard that there are some crashes when gaming.
is this the driver problem or the hardware?
if i buy a 7805u and install official drivers, will the problem still exist?
lastly, i can't seem to find temps for this model (stock thermal paste and without a cooler or any undervolting).
would appreciate it if someone could post a screenshot of cpuid hwmonitor.
    Thx alot.

I don't agree that Vista and Win 7 are both 100% stable though many of the stability issues can be laid at the doorstep of software and hardware mfgs. and their drivers. It's a little unfair of course to state that 7 is more stable as it is built on the same kernal while Vista, when it was released, was a huge rewrite of XP. 7 is almost a Vista SP with some nice new windows mgt. and file mgt. tweaks and eye candy that when explored and utilized make 7 handier and quicker and nicer to use. And of course, the OEMs have had more time to tweak their drivers for Vista/7 as well.

The performance comparisons I've taken the time to read typically favor 7 and my own experience though only anecdotal really favors 7. Worth the upgrade? I definately think so.

    Need much more info!
Which OS and is it 32/64 bit.
Drivers updated? If so, do you need to roll any back?
Which Nvidia drvr.? Uninstalled/reinstalled it? Rolled it back? Updated it?
Running OS compatibility mode? If so which one? Try with and without.
Latest version of the game? Does it support your OS? Reinstalled it? Searched game forums/blogs for issues?
Whats loading in your memory. Unchecked all uneeded startups in MSconfig?

These are just some of the possibilities.

im using windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, DOX 185.68 driver i havent updated it.
i tried running compatiblity mode 95-vista but it still lags. i tried reinstalling it but no luck.

note no running startup apps and using gamebooster to remove unecessary applications. no antivirus running as well.

what seems to be the problem? is there a problem using dox driver 185.68 on 7805u?

I've never run dox. Gateway has a new (for them) nVidia driver for 64 bit Win 7. These are supposedly tested and 'certified'. Try it. In fact they have recently posted a series of Win7 drivers. You might start with the video, that's my guess and then install each one at a time.

    There's some settings in the game discussed on one of the posts in the following thread you may want to try;

    http://forums.nba-live.com/viewtopic.php?f=122&t=69643

    Best of luck

after updating the drivers and tweaking the config for 2k10. there are no more lags. im running the game @ 1600x1024 with 4x AA and 7 MSAA.

    thanks again for your help!

PS: the current gateway drivers seems to be faster than dox optimized drivers. i ran a 3dmark06 bench for both with the gateway default drivers having more points than dox's 185.68 driver

It may work. It certainly seems to match physical and logical specs, however it is lacking in certain features such as 'Virtualization Technologies'. This is a technology required to run 'the Virtual Machine' required to boot Virtual XP on Win 7. Other 'technologies' are missing as well.

Most users on this forum upgrade to the T9900 or P9700 or similar chips in those families depending on budget and desired performance and wattage for battery life and cooling.

    http://www.intel.com/Consumer/Learn/Notebook/core2duo-detail.htm

A few have even used the 'Extreme' family, specifically the X9100 in the hopes that someday Gateway will support overclocking.

    http://www.intel.com/Consumer/Learn/Notebook/core2xe-detail.htm

I would avoid the E8435 and stick with the tried and true, even if the E8435 is compatible and less expensive. There is a thread, actually several threads that discuss in some detail the chip upgrades and user's experiences with them.

    Good luck.

I'd avoid the E8435 like the plague, it's a low power desktop chip in a mobile socket really. It was built for the iMAC, what little information is out there suggests it may be as high as 55W TDP which is worse than anything anyone has tried in a 7805u so far.

Quick question as I'm sort of a newbie to this. I'm looking to buy a Dell 3008WFP 30" monitor and hook it up. Using the HDMI cable, would the GeForce in this laptop be able to handle running the monitor at its native resolution of 2560x1600? All the website says is the gfx card needs to be dual-link DVI-D compatible. I'm not looking to run games at this resolution, which would be crazy...rather I need it for a multi-table poker setup.

    Thanks for any help!

Could you guys kindly report your temperatures on this machine, with full load please? Does it get too warm at the wrists? I'd be glad if you could report the room temperature too.

Also, is this GPU reliable? I heard about a faulty pack of these 9800, is that true?

EDIT: I'd like to know if there's any way to identify refurbished Gateway (in this case the P-7805u) laptops, external and internal, by programs. Also, this laptop has crashing problems like P-7811-FX?

My graphics card has been tweaking out when I play games.
    For example:

The block on the sight of the gun is always there, even after I respawn

And I always get artifacts. I'm using Dox 185.85
Is there a better driver to use? I used Nvidia's latest one and it gave me a lot more artifacts.

gaming performance seems to drop down when using the battery rather than the AC plugged in.

is there a way to counter this just by using the battery?

I like avoiding any weirdness that installing over the top of an old OS can bring. In the case of Windows 7 it's barely a new OS, so it's supposed to be safer than normal, but still.

Going back to the GPU temps, please post the driver version too. Before I used DOX's 185.85, it would get @ 85C under load. I'm on 195.62, i get higher fps on some games, but god my temps went up to 105C+ while playing... Anyone else getting these temps with 195.62?

Saw a user complaining that the 1920x1200 screen is worse than the 1440x900 one, that's really true? Can we have comparison shots here?

Clean the fans. Its not cooling down the CPU/GPU. Also make sure the vents are clear. Also try applying fresh thermal compound on CPU/GPU.
