Yep I am a p7805u owner and proud of it. 1920x1200 is the best picture I've ever seen on this LG screen. All of my games (CoD4 and 5, GTA IV, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, Mirror's Edge etc) run perfectly @ native resolution. I like to hook up my laptop to my HDTV with HDMI and chill in front of my 40" playing GTA IV @ 1080p XD

You get 'em! But really, I have the 1440 and it's fine. 1920x1200 honestly, isn't that practical unless you want to watch Blueray. Then you gotta plop down a few hundred for a drive. Then $40 for an HDMI cable if you wanna put it to TV at 19x12. Yeah, I'd like to have it for bragging, but practicality holds me to the 1440. Holla..........

So I just got a P-7805u and I was having a slight problem with it. It seems as though when ever I'm streaming HD content (gametrailer's "Bonus Round" particularly) or when ever I'm gaming for a long time and then exit the game I get this weird problem. I start getting tears in the screen, they appear as lines of "fuzz" flashing on the screen. It continues to get worse and them sometimes the fuzz will fill the screen and lock up the computer, or the computer will just lock up entirely. I'm reluctant to bring it back to BB becasue I have the WUXGA screen and don't want to risk it, I've also just finished getting all my games and data on it. Anyone know whats going on? Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks

P.S. I know I already posted this in the other P-7805u thread, but I figured I'd post it here too

Try changing your graphics card driver to troubleshoot that out of the way. Could possibly be your problem too.

I'm seeing a lot of refurbs on ebay. was there an issue with this model that had so recalls/refunds?

Some of the "refurbs" may simply be systems returned because the screen was 1440 x 900 when the floor demo model showed 1920 x 1200.

Otherwise, I don't know if we have anything specifically that would show that there were any more returns, for whatever reason, than any other model. I think Gateway knows that 78xx refurbs will sell much faster than other model refurbs which is why they have such a quick turnaround, but that is just an opinion.

Gateways QC on the heatsinks seems to suck too, lots of people with overheating GPUs had to return their units, many of them may have just been popped apart, the heatsink fixed and right back into the refurb line since they were fine otherwise.

Howdy folks - checking in; got my 7805u about a month ago +/- a day, the 1920x1200, which looks great to me. The salesperson at BB opened it before I bought it to be sure, so I guess was breaking rules according to some posts here :) We did see one with the 1440, booted mine and compared and they both look good, though I def. pick the 1920 as "sharper" looking; it's the 4gb ddr3, the 1gb gpu mem, the P8400 and the second HD slot that make these rock, and Id've bought the 1440 over any competitor aside from the same platform in 1920 :p Great machine - I am annoyed about the Audio lacking the "what u hear" type device(s), makes internal recording of audio a pain (using VAC, if anyone's interested) - this is a common thing with recent machines from what I read. Very annoying to me though - rumors of RIA threats to vendors or somesuch. Perhaps there was mention on this thread but missed it.

Speaking of this "thread" - a forum "folder" for 7805u owners (whatever they call a sub-category on the forum), with individual threads that are specific to our mutual affection for these monster Gateway toyz would be easier to deal with than this one gigantic mega-thread. Anyone feel me on this? :)

edit: Realize that the concept of the lounge is a perpetual thread, and therefore my suggestion for a group/subgroup for 7805u owners may be ill-received. Just there's a quantity of good stuff in this thread across a broad spectrum of topics related to the little beast. Anyway, great thread ;)

Hello everyone! I purchased my 7805-U about 4 weeks ago and I am still in the honeymoon period with it. Overall it was a fantastic purchase and although there are a few minor gripes like screen res (I was not able to get one of the 1900 X 1200s), Bluetooth, and sound quality.

Even with the screen res of 1400 X 900 gaming has been awesome due to the class 1 video card. I have been able to run anything I have throw at it in either ultra or high graphics settings without a hitch. Bluetooth issue can be solved with a dongle (15 bucka at newegg) and since this is a desktop replacement class laptop who really is going to listen to music on this thing without external speakers or high end headphones anyway?

The extra HD bay is a huuuuuge bonus to me and I will be filling it with a secong 320 gig HD very soon. Also the wireless/network card is a beast! I have Comcast 16 Mb connection and am able to get a solid and steady 2100 KB/s download speed over wireless at home while doing newsgroup downloads (I never use my Cat 5 connection).

I wish I could have got my hands on the 1900 X 1200 res version but I would recommend this notebook to anyone. There is nothing better at this price point and you would have to spend several hundred dollars more to match the hardware (try getting a class 1 video card with 1 gig of DDR3 ram at this price!!).

When I am gaming heavy or using the laptop in the bed or on my lap I use the X-Pad cooling pad and it has kept my laptop cool and the air vents completely free and open. There are days when I game allllll day. I usually run this notebook pretty hard as it is on 12 to 16 hours a day. I got this laptop after having a major spinal surgery last month and it has been a great tool to game, surf and enjoy movies from comfort.

    This is the one!!

Mine will show up on Monday. I'm really excited to get it, especially after reading about it here. Seems like a solid machine, even at retail price. I scored mine for $750, making me that much more excited. I'll chime in again when I get it.

Also got a NZXT Cryo LX cooler for it. I will post how that goes in a different thread.

Most of what I have heard is positive. My advice would be to benchmark the crap out of it within the first week are two of owning it so you can send it back to Tiger if there is an issue. Gateway also has a limited 90 day warranty for it. Just test it soon so you can find any problems if they exist and get it taken care of.

I see i see, thanks for the quick response. I really want an awesome laptop for myself as it comes in on my graduation day from high school and since I start school in july I couldn't wait for the new lappies that usually come out during the back to school season. But thanks a lot for the quick response once again, I'll be sure to stress test it.

I agree - especially on a refurb, regardless of brand.

Don't load any software on it until you've tested it and feel comfortable that the system is OK or at a minimum, maybe load a test program to stress out the system.

According to what the problem was when the system was returned (to be refurbished), you should have a clean install of the OS, the heatsinks may have been removed, cleaned, and reseated, memory chips may have been replaced, the HD may have been replaced, or other damaged hardware replaced, etc. In any event, it should have been stress tested somewhat before being shipped as a refurb, in my opinion.

However, from the reports of people recieving refurbs, it certainly seems wise to do your own testing before spending a lot of time installing software, newer drivers, a printer, etc.

Hopefully, you'll all end up with a great system at a great price.

    Hey, ciocu -

    Welcome to the board.

Did your friend provide the original box, too?

New systems are in a retail box, mostly black, with an image of the notebook on it while refurbs are usually in a plain brown box.

Other than that, I'm not aware of any way to be sure.

    Anyone else?

    Hello Ciocu,

The refurbs have small stickers at the bottom which say "Reconditioned", easy to remove so it's hard to tell which one you got if it's missed. Anyway don't worry about it, it's still great machine.

    Cheers... :)

    hi there, martee
no worries, i've read the topics here about the p7805, and I can see by myself that's a nice machine

one more thing wich makes me think about a refurb product.. is the hard drive

i've loaded an utility, and it says "work time 14 days 12 hours" , and i've received (and first started) my notebook on friday (29 march)

oh, a small sticker, easy to remove.. hmm

my only worry is the price of the notebook.. if it's refurbished, it's cheaper.. and somehow, my buddy screws me .. ;)

i've emailed gateway, with a question concerning my serial number, and ther whole refurbished thing.. i'm curious what their answer is

edit.. ok, got the answer from gateway .. :(
"From our records, we understand that your laptop is out of warranty.

    Hey, ciocu -

    Thanks for that info.

It is good to know that Gateway is keeping track of the refurbs.

Sorry to hear that you weren't told it was a refurb when you got it.

Refurbished units can be great, and a great buy though, so you may still have a good system.

The ticking could be the dvdrom bezel being lose my did that with the stock dvdrom. Try pushing against the dvdrom while its burning. Just put pressure on it to see if it goes away. If not that is probably what it got sent back for.

    I can get a refurb 7811 for $1299 CDN or a refurb 7805u for $1499 CDN - both with the 1900*1200 screen.

Other than the extra VRAM, is there a reason to get the 7805u?

My old upgraded 6831 would have struggled with running games like ME and Gears of War at 1900*1200. I fear I will be not be playing games at the panel's native res.

7805u should have a bigger hard drive too. How much does $200 CDN matter to you? :D

Also, put my refurb 7805u through it's paces the past 2 days and it's rock solid. Ate 3DMark06, and too many games worth listing with zero issues. I know it's only day 2 but I worked it hard. So far so good...

So I went ahead and bought a refrubished one last night with the 1920x1200 screen. So hopefully I like it. I got it around 900 bucks.

I was orginally going to get the Dell XPS studio 16 mainly because of the RGB LED screen. but the refurbished one I was looking at with Bluray 2.66cpu was around 1500 bucks.

I just need a laptop this summer for my internship so i will be using 3dsmax, Maya, photoshop, after effects, so hopefully this runs them good enough. Plus I wanted a machine to play a couple games at night while I am out there.

    I have a couple questions

    1. Think I made the better choice over the Dell?

    2. Anyone every buy a extended warrenty through something like SquareTrade/

3.How easy and how much does it cost to upgrade the CPU? I seen a few people here upgrade there CPU to 2.66ghz

    4. What kind of RAM do I need? and how much does it cost?

    5. Do these laptops have alot of issues? or most of you had good experiences with the laptop?

Hopefully I love this laptop, from playing around with it at Best Buy, they had a 1920 1200 one on display, it looked nice and I liked the keyboard. Thats one reason why I didnt go for the Dell it didnt have a Num keypad, I like a full keyboard.

LOL, not very much. But its the principal of it. I like to squeeze water from stones, even after I already squeezed a liter out.

2 days is nothing though as far as stability is concerned. Play a demanding game for 5-6 hours on a regular basis for a couple of weeks and I would be more inclined to trust your judgement on the matter of stability.

Looking to buy this notebook in the near future. Irked by the orange frame though. Wondering...are the highlights around the keyboard and sides orange, orange red, or copper?

I'm turned off by the color scheme (if it is indeed orange) even though it is a freakin beast for the price.

it's more of a copper color if you ask me, but, either way , it is a nice look,a nd grows on you pretty quick, my wife is even wanting one now, because she has grown to like the color scheme on mine.

Thanks guys..Another question to those who own the ones with the 1440 x 900 screens...is the screen itself glossy? How crisp is it exactly? I'm used to my Xps's 1920 x 1200 screen so I like crisp. :D

    Thanks.

Of course that would be a more solid answer, but I haven't had it that long. Just trying to answer as best I can right now. Hense why I mentioned that it was only 2 days... I'm sure I'll posting again in several weeks with an update, good or bad.

Not that glossy to me. My dv7 is WAY worse. Also, I think it is very crisp for a 14x9 screen. I've been very happy with how it looks so far, from desktop file use to gaming.

I have to say that I have seen the 1400x900 resolution and the 1920x1200 by comparison, and just like the WUXGA resolution much better. If you have the possibility go for that resolution; so far in gaming I can run everything @ 1920x1200 with perfect performance. Only games that are giving me a slightly lower frame rate are Crysis and Gta 4 because of their high CPU usage.

is the thing actually heavy to carry around? Can a 10 year old do it, or is it always a struggle?

Thanks for the replies guys. So the screen is matte and not glossy? If so, then daang. :(
The 1920 x 1200 resolution is harder to come across these days so I'll probably receive the one with smaller resolution screen if I decide to go refurbished.

The screen actually IS glossy, it's just that the glare isn't that bad.

I disagree, I've had my P7811FX next to the P7805u, the WSXGA by far better than the WUXGA in terms of LCD panel quality.

The same reason Gateway probably discontinued the WUXGA because it's a very low quality display compare to other makes.

I've had a total of 4 different P7811FX to inspect, every one of them had cloudiness in the screen.

When Vista is set to 1920x1200, certain edge pixels are very hard to see because 17" is very small for this res and this LCD panel is not sharp enough.

At max brightness settings, the WUXGA is not brighter than the WSXGA.

Game performance wise, there's a 20-50% difference between the two resolutions.

I love how people keep pushing personal opinions when in fact the WUXGA is the lesser quality screen of the two.

Try putting the P7805u WUXGA next to the Dell Studio 17 WUXGA w/LED, it's not even a comparison.

Vision33r there is always something better if you are willing to spill the cash for it. For 1024 USD WUXGA is more than enough. And ZP = WIN, I use CCCUDATS to set the game to custom high settings on lvl 4, and then run the game with no antialiasing. I get around 25-28 fps average on my OC'ed card.

And a quick question... Should I purchase the Targus 180W to compensate for my GPU Overclocking when Gaming?
Or should I stick with my stock brick when I purchased the p7805u?
