Wow what a price. I'd been looking at the Toshiba X305-Q706....but for $1000 less....this one looks great. And I've heard good things about Gateway. I was wondering how the sound was on this laptop?? On the Toshiba, it's amazing...not sure i'd find similar audio quality on another laptop.....but just thought I'd ask about it.

God, my hard drive is now up to 47 C. It keeps inching up! I don't understand what's the problem... is this normal?

You'll always get more for your money waiting, the GT725 is sweet, but for the 250 or more dollars it costs over this I'm not sure it's THAT much better. If this units screen goes down to the lower resolution its not quite as hot of a deal, but as I remember the MSI is only 1680x1050 anyways, which is still a pretty good resolution, maybe in some instances better (gaming in particular) but if you want a high res screen and these type of parts now might be the time for this gateway, but unless the economy rebounds big time laptops should stay relatively cheap and you should be able to find similar or better deals down the road.

around 50 is fin, if you start seeing 60ish deg temps then you are having a problem. The reason HD temps suck in teh FX line is no active cooling. You just have to "hope enough air passes over the bottom grill to help cool it.

if your idling at 140F (please list temps in deg Celcius) then your running a bit hot, if you jsut get there due to gaming your perfectly fin nothing to stress about.

As to how long your laptop will last... theres no way to tell, your not breaking your thermal budget so heat wont really be that much of a problem for you

everyone so far has gotten the 1920x1200 screen (though if a new batch shipps that might change)

So far it has the 1920x1200, though that might change or BB might adjust the price to see what the market will support. this laptop for anywhere under 1500 dollars is a great deal. So even at 1149 its still the best deal an FX has ever brought.

Buy a notebook when you need one, no use waiting for the next best thing. There will always be something better just around the corner. the 7805 is a great deal and assuming you dont need to play Crysis 5 on it it should easily last you 4 years

The sound is going to suck compared tot he Toshiba. The only really good thing about the tosh is the OMFG amazing laptop sound, other than that you have to deal with the rest of its eyesore and its expense

EDIT: yay i learned how to use multi quote :)

its perfectly fine... 55 and below is acceptable for a hard drive. (though anywhere below 50 is better)

And you're right...anything under $1500 is a deal (though saving cash these days is always nice :)

IT sucks that this doesn't have active hdd cooling... Do most laptops have active HD cooling? I mean c'mon, this is a 17-incher for goodness sakes >.<

Probably would work, but the pricetag hurts, actually you probably wouldn't want that since the original is a tray loader and the tray face matches the rest of the side of the laptop... But that's the style you need, a slim SATA laptop drive.

To keep the harddrive and GPU cool you really need to prop up the machine on all 4 corners especially when gaming or buy some type of cooler for it . When you just prop up the back end your usually at an angle that will pretty much block the vents for the harddrive in the front . i made a board along time ago the width of the laptop and took 4 2 liter bottle caps and screwed them down where the 4 corner feet are and the machine's always stayed much cooler this way and its FREE :).

nope thats way to large... your going to need a laptop drive (make sure it is SATA though)

To if you were some how a time lord you could make a desktop drive work in a laptop :p

    no worries (thanks for rep)
Most laptops dont necessairly have active hard drive cooling, but most of them dont so completely enclose the hard drives and have some small access where the fans can still move air around the drives. The FX line just pretty much shuts the hard drives away in their own little box to roast. Most of the time its no big deal, but if you lift the back to cool the system you can sometimes cut off any of the air the HDD's get. Which isnt a big deal until the temps get near 60 though so its rarely a problem that anyone has ever really had (yet [crosses fingers])

I ran CPUID and for some reason it doesn't list my hard drive temps. Is there a way to turn on Hard Drive monitoring in the program or somewhere on the computer. I think I might have toggled it off somehow.

Also, is there a good link to a page that will list the best GPU overclock settings. I'd like to try out a few different speeds... I've only used one so far that I saw someone had in their picture of GPU-Z

meh, it cant even burn CD's...

If you had a PATA connection there was an earlier thread for 80 blue ray drives.

But if your going to do the upgrade do it right and get the full package internal CD/DVD burner with BRD player or reader writer for all 3 formats.

Do you have a RAID array set up? if so raid bypasses the temp moniter so you dont have access to it. If you just have 2 hard drives then HWMoniter should show your temps perfectly

Thing is, I'm using the Alto wireless laptop stand with this, and I'm afraid it might be blocking the hd air vents in the front :/

Looks like I'm just going to have to cross my fingers.

Just play some games on it already :) , you have 14 days to "burn it in", I would not worry, you have a Cooler under it, thats more than most people here, and they have no problems with the hard drive, they run hot, thats the way it is, enjoy your FX, gratz!

That's OC'd temps on the GPU and after running 3dmark06. My first time running non-oc'd settings, it peaked at 72-73C so I guess it's much better now, probably due to the dox 180.84 drivers. (before I also used a cooler, now I just put taller vinyl studs underneath to prob the back end)

    To Bravoexo,
Yeah I'm thinking of getting a cooler as well.. and other people on these forums also say that the heat won't damage the life of the laptop (although I am not too sure about that one).
So you suggest updating the drivers to lower the temperature? (dox 180.84)
I also liked someone's idea of using bottlecaps to lift the laptop up a bit.

no ones saying heat wont damage a laptop, we're saying normal operating temps arent going to adversly affect longivity of the system.

If you can keep your rig at 12 degrees forever sure your going to get more life than the people that constantly run at 35 degrees, but more likely than not you'll get a new laptop before that will ever matter.

The time I first ran 3dmark and hit 72C, that's with the stock drivers... and with a cooler underneath. Now I don't hit 70C anymore and all I've changed are... Dox 180.84 drivers. and this...

No more fan cooler underneath. Been like that more than 24hours straight now. Got to run all benches again, even a long long time w/ PCMark Vantage x64. Played a lot of COD4 last night too.

And I'm in an apartment I set the thermostat to 82F...so it's warm in here.

    I hope that helps.

Been letting my laptop run Farcry 2 for about 1.5 hours now.... the GPU temp is up to 71'c. I'm using the 181.00 Laptop-to-go drivers w/the moded inf.

This seems a bit high. Any thoughts?

Brav, I would recommend just going to www.hulu.com..they have The Office, 30 Rock..some movies..my name is earl and some other shows. Also there is NBC.com, I forget what it is called, but it has a lot of south park episodes(legal :p) and I also think you should get netflix if you don't have a blockbuster sub., if you do have a blockbuster sub. then wait until it ends and get netflix, you can play movies and tv instantly, though not everything of course :p. But they have some great comedies for play instant...Happy Gilmore, Dumb and Dumberer and so on :)

o_O I would never do that, wouldn't have a wide enough reptwa(sp) for me :D I love watching Reno 911, Seinfield and Chapelle Show late at night when there is nothing else on :p. I wish that Gateway had made this model customizable on their site..though it would probably be overpriced...would love if they had a blu ray drive and your choice of your screen, I have the AUO one :/

    buy them on DVD.

With the 60+ dollars i would have spent on cable i get netflicks and 1 to 2 seasons of shows a month. Over the corse of the past 2 years i have purchased quite a few tv seasons so i'm never at a lose for something to watch.

I get new stuff online and then pick up the season when it comes out.

It does suck that gateway doesnt offer customization. It would be nice to see this rig with a few options. But i guess thats dell and HP's stick so Acer just goes with a bunch of different options and lines to chose from.

All in all though i think Gateway does really well on the FX line. Power to price they are still the best gaming notebook around and have been since the 6831

Dell is garbage, they over priced everything and have terrible graphics cards...HP is amazing if you are not looking for a gaming laptop, but all in all I think Gateway beats 'em out, you can upgrade your CPU..a great GPU for a good price and a sexeh look, non-generic, though I wish the orange was red :D

Just went to BB to look at the laptop....they didn't have one on display and refused to open a box! And I asked them what the screen resolution was and they had no idea....and again, wouldn't open up a box. So it's a no for me. I'm gonna wait until the Toshiba comes down in price. They did say they'd put it on display in about 2-3 weeks!! LOL. I saw they had at least 3 or 4 up in the cages....

I have to wait out on this deal until mid-feb. I was just wondering if anybody thought this deal would be around then. IE: if they might change the specs to match those on the box or if the price will go up a couple of hundred dollars. I also had a question like noted in the previous page, if there's a way to tell if the screen is the depicted res or a different one. Thanks!

The price may go up. Look at Gateways web site it says $1299 for the price.
