Another quick question - Is it really worth purchasing Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade for an additional $129.99 from Best Buy when the 7805U comes with Vista Home Premium? I just don't see the added value here. Thoughts?
-
Thanks BBYGuy, I don't know anyone at bestbuy though :\ -

Does that seem big enough judging by the dimensions? Thanks -

What I saw yesterday while searching info on it. Hope it is ok to post this.
Gateway P-7805u FX 17-inch Gaming Desktop Replacemnt Laptop PC
The Bottom Line 1/9/2009 - Gateway's P-7805u FX is probably one of the best overall values available on the market for someone looking for a gaming laptop computer system. It may not have the fastest processor but it has more than enough to play all the latest PC games on it thanks to the NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS graphics with 1GB of memory. Even though it is designed for those wanting toplay games on it, it can also be used for more general purpose computing as well. It would be nice to see Gateway address the battery design though. Guide Review - Gateway P-7805u FX 17-inch Gaming Desktop Replacemnt Laptop PC
1/9/2009 - The Gateway P-7805u FX is a Best Buy exclusive laptop that brings mobile PC gaming to new and surprising affordability. While it isn't going to be the fastest or flashiest 17-inch gaming notebook, it is more than capable at playing all of today's 3D games and then some.
While many 17-inch laptops use fairly high end processors, Gateway has elected to use a more middle range Core 2 Duo P8400 mobile processor. While it won't be able to put out the same performance numbers as the newer P9000 or T9000 processors, it still performs quite well. Gateway also equips the P-7805u FX with 4GB of fast DDR3 memory. This is especially surprising in a laptop that costs just over one thousand dollars.
Storage has been improved on the P-7805u FX compared to previous models. It has been upgraded to a more industry standard 320GB hard drive spinning at the 7200rpm desktop rate. This gives it a large amount of speedy storage space. It does use a more traditional dual layer DVD burner rather than a newer Blu-ray drive but it helps keep the costs down.
Since the P-7805u FX is designed for gaming, graphics are the most important aspect of the laptop and Gateway doesn't disappoint. The NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS graphics processor can handle all of today's latest PC games without so much of a problem. The 1GB of graphics memory also allows it to run at very high resolutions or with extra filters.
What is so amazing about the P-7805u is its price. Even if it were selling at Gateway's MSRP it would be a spectacular value. Best Buy has the unit for several hundred dollars less than the MSRP making it an even better value. -
i got the auo panel and its fine the speakers are fair like laptop speakers are the 17 auo panel this year is a new one from auo, ces show has a lot of input
-
What you can say about this:
- Fabs like Samsung, AUO and CMO do have material differences in their panel technlogy. You can see this from the differences reported, for example in viewing angle. I think the notion that Samsung panels have been generally been better than AUO or CMO panels makes sense without being absolute truth in individual cases.
- At the same time all fabs continually introduce new panels and use new and different production lines (6G, 7.5G etc). Therefore it's entirely conceivable that an "A" panel from last year wasn't so good, while a new "A" panel from this year from a new production line is a lot better.
- The fact than Samsung only used A or C panels in 32" and lower sets may have been true at some point in the past (for example around 2007), but there's certainly no hard rule about that and in fact AUO and CMO have supplied 40" panels to Samsung in the past.
- Liinking with the other thread that I posted about price declines, the recent trend is that Samsung doesn't need to buy any "A" or "C" panels from Taiwan anymore. They can produce enough "S" panels with the capacity in their own fabs to satisfy their demand. So new manufactured TVs most likely all will have "S" panels. However it's likely that a lot of other panels will still be in inventory/retail. -

BTW...I know this 7805u deal brought many new people to NotebookReview.com (myself included) but I am personally very glad it did. Really impressed with the amount of great information, and not just on this particular thread - I've enjoyed reading a number of topics over the past few days...
I for one plan to stay around for some time...thanks very much to those that have brought so much advice and information to all of us noobs... -
My friend is leaving for Graduate school in Europe in late July or mid August. He's looking for a desktop replacement and I told him about this 7805. Would he be better off holding out to nearer the time for a laptop deal or would this still be the one to buy? I am wondering if people think there will be another refresh of this model by then or if the quads will be more prevalent.
Obviously, the price, gpu and screen res of the 7805u give it my thumbs up.

The HP laptop bag I got does not have a model number on the bag. It is big, black with a gray HP logo. I found it in there mass of bags in the store. I looked but could not find it on there website. -
Also for those who are not risk adverse - the 7811 refurb is available at TD again for $749 plus shipping.
It will probably be OOS soon:

And yes I've gotten to 75% use on the memory resource but all was still smooth. My thought is why have all that ram and not use it? Agreed you give up some error report issues but my system is running stable enough that I don't have that worry.
And no I don't recomend for all to remove the page file. If you don't understand the isseus of going beyond the OS programers recomended settings then don't do it but it also doesn't mean it isn't worth looking into............ -
Simply put, it's a risk. You run out of physical RAM and all you get is a nice "Out of Memory" error, and stand the chance of losing your work. My point was that the OP was making sound like just turning off the pagefile was great advice, and for those who don't know what they are doing, it could be bad advice.
Some performance reviews I've read said that having a pagefile doesn't even impact performance unless you are actually using it, and for those of you that claim you don't need it, what's the issue with having one, then?
I'm not sure about Vista, but I do remember that with XP, when resources get low, the OS gets flakey.
I guess my point is, if there isn't an negatives with having one, why get rid of it?
EDIT: Your concensus that doing anything that requires more than 4Gb shouldn't be done on a laptop??? Ridiculous. I would bet some games, on top of Vista, come darn close to that. Shouldn't run Photoshop CS4 on a laptop and edit 10-15 megapixel images? I'd rather not be hampered by your restrictions...Just use a pagefile. -
how is tiger's return policy if you get a lemon?
I just bought one for $718 total.
-
-
Well, one of the reviews said he exchanged his 5 times. So take that for what you will. Ie - TD has a good "exchange" policy and that there are some risks.
-
sold out.... I almost bought 2 of them.
glad I at least got one.
thanks for the heads up! -
Again do your reasearch but if you don't need it then why have it? personally I've found the system is snappier not having to manage it. -
So my replacement Kensington AC adaptor showed up today (that I called about last night at like 6:30EST, seriously they have a wormhole or something to ship these things) and it works!
-
Glad to hear this one works! -
Called about 10 bestbuys, none had them. I decided to go to my local best buy just to make sure and they do have one. Is the box supposed to come with a nylon? the one they have comes without a nylon and I just want to make sure they are not selling me an open box item because at first they said they have none when I got there.

Just wanted to post this question again...
Is it really worth getting the Vista Ultimate Upgrade for the P-7805U for $129.99 from Best Buy? What advantage would it really hold over the current version of Vista Home Premium other than more expandability on the RAM to 128GB? Thoughts? -
save your money.

Stick with home premium and then upgrade to win7 first chance you get. -

What are the best N-Routers to work with the Intel® Wi-Fi Link 5100 network connection (802.11a/b/g/n)?
-
-
My guess is the black rubber pad placed between the screen and keyboard when newly packaged. -
I never realized how small my sigs were, but the resolution is a lot better too which is nice, very vibrant colors.
-
Ok the computer is indeed brand new,I got the LG screen,I would have bought an additional one for myself but they only had one
-
I am hoping that someone could answer the question asked me by a friend.
He is taveling to Europe in August for Graduate school and would like to get a desktop replacement. Would the 7805 deal be "it" or would he be better waiting until August. Would there be better tech/prices then? The price, gpu and the wuxga+ screen are the really hot points of the 7805. -

Can anyone recommend me bags for this laptop?
-
Was curious if anyone else was running into this problem. I've had the laptop for about 3 days now and today when i went to play World of Warcraft, it ran well for about 5 min (50-60fps) then it dropped to about 6fps. I than shut the laptop off for about 30 min and turned it back on and put HWMonitor on and started to play once again. This is what I got.
GeForce 9800M GTS
GPU Core : Min-52 C(125 F) // Max-112 C(223 F)
This was the only reading I found that was abnormal.
Any ideas? -

After 3hours of GTAIV my max was 64c so you should exchange it... -
I got laptop a couple days ago... Did anyone have some trouble with the "wake on lan" feature?
It didn't do it for the first few times, but suddenly my computer started rebooting when I pressed shut down, and I figured out it was the "wake on lan" that was causing the problem.. So I disabled it in device manager and the bios and no rebooting on shutdown so far (weird i didn't see the option to disable in the BIOS).
(1) I don't know why it just randomly decided to start doing it, any one have any ideas? Please tell me it's not a hardware problem...
(2) Also, does anyone know of any free software to test the system reliablity? (temperature of CPU and such after a heavy load etc.)
(3) My harddrive makes small clicking noises from time to time, anyone have the same problem?
Thanks! -
1. check your advanced settings for your network adapter and make sure that wake on lan capabilities or type is set to magic packet, ive found some computers WOL any time there is traffic addressed to their IP, magic packet requires a UDP packet addressed with the MAC and IP both
2. Sisoft Sandra, prime95, orthos, intel thermal analysis tool (TAT) are all good to stress the machine, and HWMonitor and coretemp are good for checking the temps
3. if its a very small click its ok, louder ones can be a concern, the scorpio has a noticeable click when it accesses due to its speed -
Anyone else have any ideas about a backpack for this notebook for 30-50bucks...?
