I'm glad you chimed in! As long as digital photobugs know the limitations of notebook computer displays, they are all set. This includes the fact that all the subpixels are 6 bit vs. 8 bit on desktop monitors which means that your color gamut will be limited to about 45% of the AdobeRGB colorspace. And contrast ratios are a bit lower...around 600:1 vs. desktop LCDs which easily exceed 1000:1. But the convience of the computer is amazing.

I have calibrated my display with my i1 Display and it looks good...not great like my Dell 2408. But I knew about these limitation when I got the unit. Even LCD lit notebook display are not that much better due to the limited color depth.

Check out the link below to AnandTech.com article on the very simliar 7811's display specs and color accuracy.

If you use a LCD hooked up to your laptop most of the time, I guess the 900x 1200res is'nt that bad

I just bought the 7805 and I did get the "upgraded" goof up. I really got a WXGA 1440x900...and even though I have no right to be...I'm really bummed about it. Any suggestions? 15% restocking fee!!

You can't really do anything about it unless there was a display unit at best buy with the higher resolution screen. May I ask...where did you buy yours from? I am in process of getting one also.

*Complain to them regarding the difference and return the unit with no restocking fee.

Ah and there you are on this forum too, unfortunately aside from taking the restocking fee hit, or arguing if the display model is 1920x1200, you probably don't have a lot of options... I take it the stuff I posted on OCForums all came back 1440x900?

I was lucky and got 1920x1200 last week, but now this seriously begs a question mentioned here previously: what if my screen fails or otherwise needs to be fixed? Would Gateway replace it with a 1440x900 instead of the existing 1920x1200, or would they honor the actual configuration? I hope I never have to find out but it sure would be annoying if they didn't replace like for like.

It looks like the people who got a p7805u in the early batches actually got a p7801u (the p7801u is not listed any longer on gateway's site). It seems that they wanted to get rid of it, and since the specs are so similar they put the remaining p7801u's they had in stock in p7805u's boxes...

    just a guess...

Anyways received my 2nd hard drive and was able to put it in raid 0 using the recovery discs...(the only problem I had was that I wasn't able to partition the drives as vista would only see the partition that had the os. The reason I think was because you can't install the raid drivers during vista setup with the recovery discs)

I guess then the screen thing could come into play for warranty issues :(

My biggest regret though is that I think this means gateway is moving away from hi-res screens possibly for quite awhile. It was the wuxga screen that sold me on the 7811 and I was hoping that future models would have this as well.

Geez...I should get commission from Kensington! :)

Glad you guys are likin' them! They are a little jewel....the DC only one for the car is even more amazing, considering it is less than half the size of the AC one! I keep a DC one in my car to charge my Dell's or HP Mini netbook while driving....

The specs were almost identical, like you said. I remember it was a newegg-only item and was listed for $1699! Even at that high price, the 7801u only listed a 320GB 5400RPM drive, not a 7200RPM, so even still, the 7805u is not an exact duplicate of the 7801u.

Since the processor, ram and bus speed used in the 7805u all require a Centrino2 chipset (look up the specs on intel.com for the Centrino vs. Centrino2 differences), regardless of what anyone prints, it has to be Centrino2.

That sucks! What was your batch number by the way? Just wanted to see if we can narrow down after which batch number the screens are being changed out. HXXX seem ok but IXXX range seems to vary.

There is a post about batch numbers and what lcd panels people had. Thats about the only way to try and tell. If you can find one that is the exact batch number as one of those posted, you can probably feel confident that you'll get the same lcd panel as they did.

Oh and someone asked for temps?

    TZS0/TZS1 40 C Idle / 70 C full load
    CPU 25 C Idle / 51 C full load
    GPU 50 C Idle / 62 C full load (running oblivion)

I've put AS5 on the cpu though.

From what I am gathering the last known 1920x1200 screen was with a batch number I005570 and the last 1440x900 (poor RossMan26!) was an I007332. So I am thinking that is the cuttoff. But of course this hasn't be validated!

Hey BMW, did you happen to check your CPU when you AS5'd it? I was wondering if maybe it was an ES or something funky since its still a P8400 but is at IDA clocks all the time and has those odd CPU-Z readouts you posted earlier.

The reason I put AS5 on it was because I wanted to check what the actual CPU said on it. It didn't say anything out of the ordinary. It said it was a P8400 2.26. So I dont know what the deal is. Seems stable and cool, so I'm not going to worry about it.

In theory I downgraded from a t9300 P-6860fx to this laptop. So now I only lost 100mhz and gained the DDR3 advantage / screen / vid etc.

First post. I've been following this thread since I picked up my 7805u on new years eve. I'm loving the machine. I figured since the monitor looked so wonderful I must have gotten a LG display but its not, its the AOU but I see zero backlight bleed or any dead pixels and the color looks great. I'll calibrate it with my spider pro later and see how it comes out. As a full time photographer I still use CRTs for color correction on images (its unlikely I'd use this machine for CC anyway).

BTW, if anyone is interested I measured a 105 watt draw from the wall when playing Left 4 Dead at 1920x1200, max settings, using wifi for connectivity. It drops to 30-35 watts when at the desktop. figure it pulls a little less when drawing from the battery (no AC/DC conversion loss) and its still going to cook through a battery quick when doing much 3D gaming! Awesome machine!

I feel like a heal. I told my friend to get one of these because of the specs. He got one in the Batch 1007600's range and it is a WXGA screen. It sucks because now he may have to eat the restocking fee.

it is definately a wxga screen, I talked him through all the checks.

That is unfortunate. But we didn't know they started shipping with the WXGA screens until just recently, so you cant be too hard on yourself.

Windows 7 beta is back up for those looking to put it on!! Can't wait, make sure you have the back up discs. Can't wait to have it on this computer, I don't really like vista :). By the way do I need to do a disc for driver's+apps?
