I read these postings this morning, went to Best Buy in Portland, OR and gave them the SKU number and was out the door in less than 6 minutes. Super great buy at $ 1049.99 out the door (no tax in Oregon).
Computer so far working good as I un-install the awful Norton 360 (don't forget to use the Norton Removal Tool to totally clean out Symantec left-over crap they do not normally remove by using this Symantec tool ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe ), MS Office Trial, Google tool bar, etc. and doing of these many recommended tips to make Vista run at top speed

Of course Gateway.com does not have drivers listed on this model, nor does it think it is even a valid serial number.
As far as I can tell this laptop does not have Bluetooth - is that correct? If so, has anyone purchased and installed an add-on Bluetooth card in the open slot next to the Wireless Card (inside the bottom)?

Concerning USAA, you usually have to be in the military or a military dependent.

P.S. Same question I asked another poster here, how's the fan working on this thing? Does it still speed up and slow down all the time with a mind of its own? -
Here is lots of good views from Gateway.com of the P-7801u (which is the same as the P-7805u)

Here is my actual P-7805uAttached Files:

I just checked my local bestbuy store and they had NONE in stock in the whole IN state. Although they told me they have 4 inbound for next week and told me to check in on Monday... so excited for monday
-
Went out and got one from BB, they only had one. I still cannot believe this thing costs $1049, build quality isn't the best in the world yes that's true, but this is still ridiculously good value. Unbelievable, I don't think I've purchased something as big of a "bang for the buck" as this.

Congrats Xens
-
Sorry for all the questions
-
This 7805u is basically a 7801u http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834101166 except it's $550 or 33% off. -
^ what Xens said.

Awsome, thank you, Blue tooth is no biggy anyway, you can buy a small dongle for less than $20.00

I'm not going to garuntee this works... but you might just be able to check stock like-ah-so:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...194054059178&sourceType=product&skuId=9172511. If someone knows of a zip or two that is definately OUT of stock try it and let me know if that works, there's some jiggery with the url to make it work and im not sure if that did it or not. The description looks correct but that doesn't mean the results are accurate... -
I just checked it with Brooklyn's 11223. Gateway FX Edition's the only description they give on page.
-
Same here.
-
-
I'm not concerned about the description, they're frequently vague, I'm concerned with whether or not it shows out of stock at stores someone's already hit up and emptied out to see if its an accurate indicator.
Also, out of curiosity, if you did something like paid the 39.99 for geeksquad "optimization" could you use that to circumvent the open box restocking charges if it turns out some of these have WXGA monitors instead of WUXGA? Even if you didn't get the 39.99 back it'd be a lot cheaper than the restocking fees. -
Every BB in Eastern Neb. here (4 in Omaha + 1 in Lincoln) shows them as in stock.
Will hit up the one closest to my house in a lil bit here (they don't open for an hour and a half) and return w/my impressions. Based on what everyone seems to be saying, I figure it's at least worth a look (to see whether the hype is deserved)

Better hurry up if you want this laptop as this laptop is being listed now at slickdeals
The word will spread like wildfire once it's there.

the 9800 series ( any variant) isn't included in the HDX series is beyond me......big props to gateway though!
EDIT: Just got back from two of the 4 area stores here....and no 7805's! -
-
Lucky, I just came back from BB and they had none in stock in the area. It wouldn't even let him order one. But I guess they are on the way... hopefully they get some.
-
anyone that got one of these, are there other #s on the receipt besides sku 9172511? I dont know if they put the pcat# on the receipts, i think thats whats missing to make the locator work right.

Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
maybe this is gateways answer to Asus G50vt?
but the screen kinda seals the deal on this one.
-
why isn't it on gateways website?
-
its not on bestbuy's website either.
-
Its not suppose to be released until Jan 4th, hence its on none of their websites, funny thing is that it is on sale at BestBuy stores.
-
I'm just back from CA, San Jose: Bestbuy, and there was one, and I bought it. The 1st Store I went to, the Manager was insisting not on selling it saying they get charged a fee if they sell it early. So I drove to another bestbuy around 5 miles away, there was one there too. The store person got it out and sold it to me for $1050 + Tax, no questions asked and nothing about the 1/4 sell date.
Oh by the way, at the 2nd best buy, it took him awhile to find it on the inventory and I had to point it out. Thanks to me seeing the pictures on this site I knew which box it was. -

Does this one ( 7801/7805 ) have all the problem of the 7811 ? ( that i read from the 7811 thread: heat, lock-up, etc.. )
Thx -
I dunno if it will be on there, the sku (9172511) should be, are there any other numbers besides that one
-
9172511 P-7805u 1049.99
P-7805u/c2d P8400/4gb Ddr3/32
Thats exactly the line. -
I took the sku with me, had a clueless employee look it up. Said they had two "in back." In back meant in their caged area above the display shelves. He went along looking at the boxes, could not find one, told me the inventory must be wrong. 30 seconds later, I point out the box to him. He gets a ladder and key, gets it for me and its mine.
No nonsense about a street date, just the had to listen to the required sales pitch about services available, despite me telling him beforehand I was not going to buy any of them. -
Manager probably didn't know what laptop he was grabbing anyways. But its funny how everyone there is 2 in stock, but the 2 bestbuys here in SJ had only one in stock.
-
When I went to my Portland, OR Best Buy yesterday, they said Yes they have 2 in-stock. 1 on display and the other in the cage in the factory sealed box. I bought the one in the cage and was in and out of the store in 6 minutes.

Anybody getting random 1-2 second fan speedups, that occur every so randomly?
-
-
I bet the fans are controlled by temp, faster when hotter etc.

If I bought this through Visa, do I get that 2nd year warranty as well?

I have recieved a refurbed 7811 which has some annoying light leak at the bottom of the lcd. I am wondering if it is worth jumping on this newer model for the screen ? I beleve the 7811 was $750 minus live cashback ($680 ish). Is the screen on P780 that much better? or would I be better banking the money saved for my next laptop a couple of years from now.
-
Personally I'd rather a constant whirring fan over almost silence then a loud 1-2 second blast. BIOS updates will probably modify this if enough users complain. -
If anyone is interested, I ordered an internal bluetooth module (8 pin broadcom BCM 92045) and an AR5008 to replace the intel wi-fi adapter. Currently running Ubuntu and Vista in dual boot, about to add Leopard in Tri-boot, and then getting another identical WD 7200rpm drive for raid 0.
One key isn't working very well, so I will probably see how the gateway hardware support process works soon. I don't really like the keyboard layout anyway... I can't quite put my finger on it but there are a couple of things that feel out of place, and it's kind of hard to type by touch in the dark.
So far I've just played POP (2008) and Portal, running them in 1440x900 and everything cranked, FPS is very nice. With the WUXGA display, scaling isn't much of an issue. In fact, it's sort of like having AA turned on- just a little softer, but it definitely doesn't detract from the gaming experience at all.
NV Scaler seems to look fine for older games that only support 4:3 resolutions too.
Full WUXGA resolution was actually ok too, but it would slow down a little bit (probably to around 20fps) - I'll take a slight loss in crispness over a low framerate. Keep in mind this is with all settings maxed.
Heat has not been a problem. It's by no means cool, but it doesn't approach uncomfortably hot running on my lap or even my bed.
I only notice the very slight light bleeding/leaking on the bottom when the screensaver is on and the screen is black. The taskbar is enough to completely disguise it, and I haven't noticed it at all in any game. If anyone has a problem with this they're either too picky, or theirs is much more pronounced. Maybe the 7811's were worse?
Only crashes I've experienced are hard locks when trying to use hardware virtualization in vmware and virtual box at the same time. It doesn't work. Otherwise 100% stable.

Well my cute wife pulled it off, I now have a P-7805u, she walk in looked around for a few minutes, a Bestbuy employee named "Bubba" asked her is she needed any help, she asked to look at the gateway laptop in the cage in the black box, he showed it to her and bam, done deal. The specs are the same as other posters have stated, Hard Drive WD3200bekt, The Screen Res 1920x1200, no blue tooth (no Biggy) 2.2gz cpu.
I am going to buy a 2nd harddrive and setup raid 0, any ideas on the cheapest place to buy a WD3200bekt? Newegg has it for $89.99 free shipping. -

I just checked back my bestbuy and it still haven't arrived yet. Now i see 5 as being inbound and he told me that trucks arrived at Tuesday and Thursday. He told me to check back at night? (I assume trucks arrive in the mornings)? I don't know if the "new" batch is going to have the same specs as the ones already in stock
