I have used ubuntu on my gaming desktop and older laptop, dell inspiron 1515. And the 8.10 ubuntu was exceptional and I love it.

But a a new Gateway 7805U owner, I am sorry to report that Ubuntu 8.10 will not work on this laptop. Why, I don't really know. I suspect it's the video card, Geforce 9800M GTS 1 GB DDR3 Vram, or the RAM DDR3. But I have tried and tried and have not been successful in installing and running ubuntu 8.10 on this FX.

If anybody could think of a way to install and run ubuntu on the gateway fx, please let me know.

PS the CD live runs OK. Installation appears OK. But when reboot, hung up again and again.

So now that BB's site shows the warehouse back in stock and shipping usually on one day (as opposed to the previous Backordered 1-2 weeks) one must assume that 7805u's are all coming with the WXGA+ screens (btw are these now shipping to posted spec with DDR2 and not DDR3 as well?)

Only chance of getting a new 7805u with WUXGA is hoping for an older batch still at your local BB store?

Also...I too am curious as to where these $800 sales on the 7811 are on BB...the BB site still has the 7811 listed at $1249 on their Outlet...

They cannot ship with DDR2, ever. A DDR2 memory slot is different than a DDR3 memory slot. The 7805 is made with a DDR3 memory slot and cannot fit a DDR2 module.

Must be the video? When I had the 7811 I ran both Ubuntu 8.10 and Mandriva 2009, both worked. I haven't been ambitious enough to try any distro on the 7805 yet.

I am biased. With that out of the way, even with the price difference, for me it's a no brainer. 7805U!!! with none of the problem of the 7811x that I know of.

I encounter no problem to speak of with the 7805U.

If the MSI GT725 does not come out this week, then I'm buying the 7805u.
On march I'll go back to Argentina, and obviously I'm taking the notebook with me. There we have 220v, does anyone know if this computer supports that voltage, or if I will have to buy something extra to correct it?
The last laptop I bought in the states was a HP and it supported 110 - 220, so I could just use it as it was; I hope the gateway's the same.

Even if you had to step down to the WXGA+ screen of the new batch of 7805u's?

Common, the WXGA is good for lots of people. But if you must have the WUXGA then look around. I don't know where you are but there are deals to be had.

For those looking for the MSI GT725, the ATI 4850 is indeed a very good card, but it not shipped yet and MSI although a pretty good motherboard maker, has a very shaky reputation of laptop quality. I owned several MSI products and they left me shaking my head.

Gateway is owned by Acer now, and Acer does not become one of the biggest laptop manufacturers by making lousy products. I have owned 3 Acer laptops and passed them on to my kids and I can tell you, Acer are build like a truck (Tundra not some other junks).

7805U definitely. Good thing i got the 1920x1200 which is what most of you want. I haven't run into major problems yet.

Blargh, just got mine today and it's a 1440x900. >_>

Not a deal breaker, but it does irk me.

I had that same issue. My 7811 from Tiger would freeze about one second into anything using OpenGL. Returned it, 7805u is in front of me burning recovery disks, no regrets here.

@djsephiroth, congrats on the new laptop, you can try finding a 1920x1200 display unit though and have it exchanged for it, like what some folks have done here. They are becoming rare and quite elusive.

it is pretty stupid and ridiculous to put a 1400x900 resolution on a 17" laptop with a 9800M GTS.... they could've at least used half of their brain and know that a 1680x1050 is standard for a 17"

All you will need to do is to buy a cable from the outlet to the PSU (according to your regional outlet format). The PSU is autoswitch between 100 and 240 volt.

I just came back from the local BB and picked up myself another 7805u confirmed with the WUXGA 1920x1200 AUO1088 display. It had the lower batch numbers so I went for it. I now have two of these with the WUXGA panels. One I will keep and the other will be available to anyone who wants or needs the WUXGA vs WXGA screen.

Interesting fact though, the BB employee told me that it was marked as a clearance item already. I had to pay the full price of $1149 (no tax!) as the price wasn't lowered, but it was definitely showing as a clearance item according to him. Can any of you BB employees here confirm this? The first thought that crossed my mind was if this has anything to do with the new batches of WXGA screens showing up...Coincidence?

I have a little noob questions here, I have been looking through threads but got no solution.

What software do you guys use to overclock your GPU and how do you do it? I tried Rivatuner but It won't work or I didn't know how to do.

What's the driver so far give you the best performance and is overclockable?

I saw the Dox Optimised 181.20 was released on www.laptopvideo2go.com is this good ?

Also, is PhysX a driver to add up on top of Video Card Driver?
    Does it boots any performance?

Thanks for answering me. = )

I don't think they are making any money with P-7805 using expensive DDR3 memory, so 1) they put in a cheaper display 2) they raised the price.

I've also found that crysis runs pretty good at high settings while its windowed too, lots of games get an immediate decrease when windowed. I was impressed.

Download Nvidia's system tools, they are in iaTa's Driver thread (stikied to the top of this subforum)

I use teh 180.70, but most of DOX's drivers seem really nice

PhysX is a physics calculator that allows the GPU to process the information (usually faster) than the CPU. Its just part of the newer drivers that have been released, unfortunatly its only useful in a handful of games as there hasnt been a "standard" developed yet that all companies can use.

As to better preformance... you'll get more eye candy (with games that give it) but you'll take a hit to frame rate to gain it

Well the BB manager I spoke with just prior to this models official release on Jan 4 said that it was intended an Xmas promotion and was delayed. It is possible that this was never meant to be a "replacement" but just part of the holiday sales blitz and that only so many were made.

Personally, I am still hoping for a bigger jump over the 7811.

That may explain the low price of the 7805u. Since they missed the holiday sales season it makes sense to blow them out. It's working so far.

Alright, I got my bag and sleeve today. As you thought Semi the holding area for it is a wee bit small..but it fits in, there is a good amount of padding, I think it would do fine dropping. The sleeve is great too, at the bottom there is a gray lining that is easy to hold on to. Of course this one is a bit big, it fits in fine with the battery though :p. The padding on the sleeve as I said in the accessories thread is a whopping 1.3inches, which is really thick compared to others for 20 bucks at least. It seems as thick as the scuba dive suit I wore in hawaii :p. I'll post pictures in this post soon enough.

As you can see it sticks out a little at the top of the bag, but if you have the sleeve you can just plop it infront of it and you can easily put it over where the laptop is :p

I got my bag today as well, I ordered the Targus 17" XL, I guess you'd call it an attache style case since they make a backpack and a roller as well. It's pretty nice, has a divider for the main compartment, but honestly the 7805 takes up almost all of that space, but its not at all squeezed in there, you could easily put a decent sleeve on it and still get it in there. It has a ton of extra pockets, I have a mouse and both Kensington chargers in the bag and it still has room for a TON more stuff, has a little net pouch, plenty of room for an external HD or what have you, as well as papers/files etc.

I also got the Kensington DC to DC adapter as I mentioned, this thing is TINY, and its nice that it uses the same cables as the AC adaptor on the output side so you only need one, I think I might get that automatic roll up one I posted earlier though since the long one is a pain to gather up and velcro.

    1) http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.02.html

    2) http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=22225 I'm using version 1.1 not 1.0.

Yeah I'm very satisfied with the performance of this thing for its price.

Glad to hear it fits Zak. Would you recommend it to someone like me? I need a bag too and basically what I'd like to fit in it would be the laptop (of course :p), PSU, headphones, couple soda cans/water bottles, usb mouse, mobile broadband card, etc? Might be pushing my luck here but I have a PSP too with a case about as long as the PSP itself and its a little thick. Think that'd fit anywhere?
Also are you saying it fits into the backpack with the sleeve on it or without the sleeve on the laptop?
And how would you rate the quality of it? Think it'd remain usable for a year or more?
Lookin forward to the pics. Thanks.

Haven't gotten to use them much yet, got them for trips really, but I'm still blown away by how small they are, the only thing I dislike is the way the charge tips fit, I'm tempted to call them up and see if i can score an extra N3 tip or two and maybe try shortening one up to work better with the laptop.

cant wait... to get my p-7805u... got the 1900x1200 screen with lg panel.

the price for the Gateway P-7804g here in singapore will cost you $2000 usd....and i got mine for 1049+tax still a nice deal. and the difference between 7805u and the 7804g is that it has 2x320 gb hdd only 5400 rpm. and a p8600 2.4 ghz cpu... and the 1900 by 1200 screen...still not enough to cover for the cost... heheheheh

    try to check

Look on ebay for "XPS Mouse pad" to see what they look like.

Also do you think its big enough for quick aiming on CoD4?
I'm going to get a Logitech G5 laser mouse so you think the XPS pad and G5 are a good combo? Thanks.

I dig my S&S steelpad, but they're kinda pricey unless you find one on sale, I think I paid 30 but they're 40 on the egg at the moment. Works great with the MX518 which i believe is just the G5 minus weights and plus an extra button. Gotta keep it clean though, mines dusty all the time and doesn't work as well when it is.

I just ran 3dmark06 and got 83XX. I have the dox 180.84 drivers (I think, if I installed them correctly). It seems like I run CoD4 at about 80 average, and Crysis pretty good at high settings. I there anything I can do to bring this score up? I am pretty new with OCing so that might be a little bit out of my league...

    Thats a good deal i think :p

Not really much you can do besides overclocking except make sure ALL applications are closed in the background and the only one your running is 3Dmark06.
    Also overclocking is VERY easy.
    Just download:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.02.html
    Install it.
when the Installation is complete, go to your Nvidia control panel thats already on your computer.
on the left click the + sign next to "Performance".
You'll get three options, click Device Settings.
And than you'll get the screen to overclock, its very easy, you just type what you want to put your clocks at and hit apply. Just like you change your screen resolution.
    Right now we're all using
    710
    950
    1750
    as the clocks.
    It boosted me 700points.
    Goodluck.

I bought mine thinking it might be able to give me decent performance in FSX (notorious for being a resource pig). I can get good FPS (~10) with everything at "Ultra High" flying around KJFK. That's eminently flyable. FS9 with everything on max and all of the add-ons (ASv6, UT, FSGenesis mesh, complex aircraft that are known FPS killers, &c) is even more impressive. Put me in the "very satisfied" club as well.

I think it would all fit. Also, it seems fine...no dents on top of the bag where the laptop sticks out of..I can put some sleeve over the top of it and still no dent. Also, I think you would be able to fit maybe a 6 pack of soda and the other things...donno though :p

Also, Zak. Could you give me a mini list of what compartments it has other than the laptop part? Does it have waterbottle, cell phone, netting compartments, etc? Thanks.

ok, there is some room infront of the laptop compartment where you could probably fit a textbook in. Another compartment ahead of it which has a neat little circular holding..thing, sorta looks like a box for glasses, but with mesh where it is zippered and portable, probably fit 3 smaller sized mouses :D. A CD player pocket, an ipod pocket(this is about the size of the 2nd generation ipod nano which was wide). you could probably fit in this compartment as well...could fit maybe 2 small hard covered books(like a clifford type ones which were long but of course no thick :p). Another small compartment ahead of that one where you could fit another cd player. Then another one right ahead of it where you could fit a wallet. A secret compartment where you could fit either lots of change or folded up dollars on the left side of the backpack, then opposite of that is a zipper where if you open it up and take it out, is a mesh type water bottle holder. I think this is more for lighter carriers. It is perfect for me...put my mini mouse in there, my ipod, my sleeve, some money, 2 or 3 folders of work, 4 sodas, gum and a sandwich. Of course some more, but I am a light traveller :)

Hmmm...they didn't mention that other "top-end" LCD panel maker, AUO... ;)

(btw...I just stumbled upon this article...I'm not really obsessed with AUO vs LG...)

No, you won't find the 7805 listed in Best Buy's website for anything lower than it's current listing at this time. The computer just hit the >90 days of being an inactive in-store sale item, so that means it gets placed on the clearance listing within store. What the "elephant list" or end-of-life means is that Best Buy wants the items sold to get any residual margin out of the clearance item that they can, as soon as they can. That means that supervisors/managers get a list of what the actual break-even price is and what they are "allowed" to sell the item for. The breakeven price for the 7811 is a staggering $441 and odd change!! Since the item is still posted online at Best Buy for $1279, they take the average as the focus price = roughly $860. This is what the "average consumer" should pay for the clearance item according to supply vs demand.

Now then, the secret to getting an even greater discount is called bargaining. We all know that Best Buy makes much more money from services and service plans than from the measly 2% margin (on average) from the sale of a typical notebook computer. Tell the supervisor/manager that you're interested in purchasing the 2 or 3 year protection plan with accidental damage/handling and voila... they will likely lower the price to somewhere near $800-$700 or lower, to get your business and $$. Make sense??? I was offered an even lower price because I am decent at bargaining, not just because of my employee status!!

My question still looms... since I already own a 7805U with the LG 1920x1200 screen and havent noticed any issues with it, is it worth it for me to trade that computer in for a questionable 7811 that may have light leakage, heat & power issues, and other documneted issues?

PS - The 7805U IS NOT listed as clearance in Best Buy's RSS (inventory) system, as of today!!! I'll continue to check on this over the next couple of weeks and update everyone.
