I got a 5.8 as well, but a 5.9 is the highest score so it doesn't tell you much if you're already close to it.

I*ve been following this thread since it started, i was looking online for 6 months for a laptop. I almost bought a sager 5793, nice but doesnt compare to this for 850$ less. So im 900 miles from home past the arctic circle in alaska at work. I had to get a friend to find one of the laptops for me at the nearest bb near my home. Turns out they had eleven of them there, I005973 is the one i bought. They still have 10 of them today, I bought mine 2 days ago lol. So if you can call the alaska bb and have em send you one do it.
The geek squad there doesnt know anything about whats going on with them. And alaska doesnt really have a gaming community so you have a really good chance of getting a good one. I wont be able to open mine for 12 more days till i get home Already been at work for 24 days working 12 hours a day on an oilfield =p $$$

I have, works great, haven't rebooted in 4 days now.

Make a Restore Disc/Driver App disc

Upon a complete re-install (I didn't upgrade), the only things that won't have drivers for are

    1. Nvidia Video - Install / Download the official drivers first or use the ones on the Driver/App Disc (i used the BETA ones)
    2. Webcam - Run the Chicony Installer of the Driver/App Disc
    3. Ethernet - Run the Marvell Miniport installer from the Driver/App Disc, then use "Have Disc" and install the Marvell Yukon 88E8071 driver manually
    4. SMS Bus - Use "Have Disc" and install from the Intel folder (dunno which one, it just automatically found it for some reason)
    5. Mass Storage - Use "Have Disc" again and install Intel's ICHM9/M-E 2 port Serial ATA Controller 2 - 292D

    Then run Windows Update

    a. SmartCP (HD Audio) update
    b. The Patch fix for MP3's.

    What I lost

    1. Intel Storage Matrix Software (the Windows Beta7 drivers are newer, but no app)
    2. Daemon doesn't work, use Virtual Clone Drive instead.
    3. I didn't reinstall any of the other apps, replaced CyberLink w/ ImageBurn for CD/DVD writing
    4. I couldn't reinstall the Gateway Recovery Software.

    Hope that helps.

    My new notebook cooler...

    And some modification

Ok, I bought this for my External HDD docking station (A Vantec Nexstar) and realized I could use this in this fashion as well. I will probably have more time next month to make a better cowling... noise wise, it's silent up to the 50% throttle mark.

    Edit: Some timings done...

I repositioned it at the back, pushing air in. Waited for the GPU to kick in at 50C, and timed it til it stopped at the 42C mark

Without the fan - 59 secs
With the fan pushing air in - 43 secs

So I can get to the fan shut off point 16 secs faster.

In the pulling configuration, time it took before the fans turned on

    Without fan - 126 secs
With fan pulling air - 163 secs

So it does make a 37 sec difference

If I put it in max power, and a better enclosed cowling, I can keep the idle GPU temp to 44C.

No, you can. You just don't have a way yet to see or configure them via the Intel app you have right now in Vista (unless you install the older drivers)... but I'm ok with these new ones...mainly because of this.

OK, what am I missing here? On my 7811 (same unit, right?), I checked the online docs and it says to go to START/All Programs/GATEWAY, and there is a Recovery app there. NOPE. I don't have a GATEWAY folder under All Programs...I have Gateway Games and Gateway Documentation, but no Gateway.

Now, under Program Files on my C: drive, there is a GATEWAY folder with a Gateway Recovery Management subfolder, and lots of stuff in there. After browsing the various subfolders, I cannot figure out how to start the Recovery program.

Lastly, hopefully I didn't screw up. My 200GB HDD was split in two from Gateway, and the D: appeared to be empty, so I deleted the D: partition and expanded C: to use that space. Don't tell me the recovery files were hidden on D:.... :(

Most manufacturers create a recovery partition because it's an easy way to get the computer back to a 'like new' condition if needed.

Maybe Gateway can help in some way? Or maybe another 7811 user might be able to send you a recovery DVD??

It's probably too much to ask to NAME the recovery partition something like, say...RECOVERY???? Or put the files visible or put a readme file that says STOP DO NOT DELETE!!

Instead, we have an apparently empty 90GB partition...who wouldn't delete it and reclaim the space for C:?? (ok, that was rhetorical...)

I did not delete D partition but my gateway recovery program did not work. Probably because I use Revo uninstaller and deleted some essential files. Whatever, it did not work.

But I have acronis installed and made a copy of the c: drive as backup. So if anything happens, I could restore the acronis backup file, i.e. to a working vista gateway as when it was backup.

So lancorp there is hope to us.

    :)

When I had the 7811 from Bestbuy, "D" was named "data" and was totally empty. The recovery partition, which is the same as the 7805, was located in a hidden partition in the first 10GB of the drive. Go into "Disk Management" and you should see a partition named "EISA" or something like that.

    True.

Something really strange happened. I can use the gateway recovery program to make the appdrv cds (2) but I cannot make the dvds (2) recovery.

I looked really close at the Event viewer for all the warnings and errors but could not find anything.

Never touched the EISA partition, or anything near it.

I tried different dvd brands, -r and +r. I did disable win search and moved the pagefiles to my secondary drive. The gateway recovery program started ok but hung right when it is supposed to write.

If anybody have any idea please let me know.

I'm not so worried about disaster recovery as much as wanting to make the DVD/CD for the install of Windows7. I suppose I could get the drivers I need from gateway.com...dunno...

I'd be happy to make a recovery disc for you if you need it. Not sure if a 7805u recovery disc will work for those with a 7811 though.

YES! I do have that 10GB EISA partition, but cannot figure out how to start the recovery program. Like I said, I don't have a GATEWAY folder under START/All Programs.

If someone does, can you let me know the command to start the recovery software?

I appreciate your offer, but it looks like the 7805 may do the recovery different than a 7811, and I might still have the recovery partition! I just need to figure out how to start it, since I don't have an icon that starts it...

My 7805 executes the recovery from here: "C:\Program Files\GATEWAY\Gateway Recovery Management\eRecovery\eRecoveryUI.exe"

Might the the same or similar for 7811.

On the subject of recovery disks, who was the bozo at gateway that decided putting the recovery partition that gets used once a decade in the FIRST 10GB of hard drive where the drive is the fastest was a good idea?

No go here. There isn't a "eRecoveryUI.exe" file in that folder, just a "eRecoveryMain.exe", which, when launched, gives an "unhandled exception has occurred in your application" error. :( Something about BurnMachine.DLL not being found (which, I do not see in these folders).

    Sigh....

Type diskmgmt.msc and hit enter in the search bar in start menu and it'll load the disk management console, you can see your partitions in there, it'll be the one on the C drive that doesn't have a letter since its hidden.

Alternatively you can go to administrative tools, computer management, storage, disk mangement

Take a look at this Gateway document.

    Full Factory Recovery.

It is for Vista but I have no way to verify if it works since my EISA partition is long gone.

That procedure is good for restoring your PC, but not for creating restore/recovery DVD's--which I need for the drivers to install Windows7...

Thanks for the post, though...nice to know how to do that should I want to restore to factory config.

It seems that method uses the recovery partition as opposed to created recovery discs which could be handy for some.

As far as drivers for Win7 and back to Vista, the needed drivers can be downloaded from Gateway, Intel and Nvidia.

To go to Win7, you will need Chipset INF installer from Intel, O2 Media reader and Conexant audio from Gateway and latest notebook driver from Nvidia.

To go back to Vista requires a few more drivers that can be found at gateway plus IATA from Intel. EDIT: or try the F8 method. :)

You could always call the store and see if one of the reps would be willing to read you the batch numbers off of the boxes. My local store only had a couple in stock and the batch numbers were the same. That shouldn't be too big of a chore for one of the associates.

I can't find Gateway's pixel policy but the following is the one provided in Best Buy's PSP (doubtful that Gateway would have a more liberal policy):

...Pixel repair will be based upon three (3) defective pixels located in a group less than one half (1/2) square inch or five (5) defective pixels throughout the entire display area.
