Wow I might grab that fan...though it doesn't look like it would be portable...I might buy it though later on since I only travel like 3 to 6 times a year.

Couple of things.....My display driver has been acting strange.....on occasion the display goes blank and when it comes back I get a popup saying "The display driver stopped responding and has recovered". Anybody else see this behavior? My display driver version is 176.15.

Also, does anybody know how to enable the much touted multi-finger gestures on the synaptics touchpad? Thx

what are some of the start up programs that you guys deleted when you first got your system up and running? I have an idea of what they should be, but just want to get an idea of what more experienced people have done hear.

Question: Anyone with the 1440x900; can you comment on the quality of the screen? I'm one of the few interested in the lower resolution. Kinda stinks that it's such a crapshoot, it seems.

Is the whole multimedia touch bar not lighting up, either, or just the little volume touch slider? If nothing is lit, there is a Fn+F1 that turns on and off all the panel lights.

I've seen the 1440x900 screen and the quality is excellent. I think it even looked better than either of the 1920x1200 screens.

    Hope this helps.

well i just finished installing windows 7 ultimate (beta) and nvidia drivers. my windows experience score is 5.9. pretty impressive id say. graphics topped out at 7.9, all the other scores were 5.9.
the only thing kind of wierd is my RAM seems to be accessed at 20-25% even at idle. hmmm...... what do u think?
    thx, vynle

    :(
The prompt calls for the dvd insert, then system hangs.

Specifically, does anyone have any idea what program is doing this, i.e. what are the files needed for it to work?

The laptop is running fine and I was able to download all the drivers from gateway in addition to make the APPDRV cds with the Gateway program.

    :(
Oddly enough I seem to have the same issue. Was easily able to make the APPDRV dvds but when I tried to make the Vista recovery/restore discs (indicated that it should take 2 DVDs), it made the first one just fine then hung on the second. Had to do the 'hold the power button down' bit to get it to come back after shutdown. Having no problems at all with the laptop...just can't seem to make the Vista disks (which is more than a bit annoying...)

Did anyone ever come up with a solution for this? Didn't see anything in the posts...

    Thanks!

BTW...if there are any EVE players out there...I've been running the EVE client on my 7805u since Saturday using the Premium Graphics package and every graphics setting to full bore with no problems. It's like a whole new game and runs as smooth as silk...simply beautiful!

The fan kicks in at 50C, then it'll keep going til it can get your temps to 42C...then they stop and wait til it goes up to 50C again.

Some say yes...if you're into 3dMark06, i've read of scores over 10,000. Since the GPU seems so fast already, it's mostly bragging rights, probably, but I'm not a hardcore gamer so not sure how much better a 10% improvement in 3dmark06 is...

You can, but there are only two memory slots and they both are filled now (2 x 2GB DDR3). You're next step is a 4GB DDR3 stick, and those are pricey right now.

No bluetooth in the 7805u. Some people have bought a Broadcom BT card on ebay and stuck it in, but there is no antenna wire to hook to it.

EVE looks beautiful on this machine. It's the main reason why I bought the P-7805, to play EVE while on the road. (I'm in a hotel 26 weeks a year!)

Went to Best Buy yesterday and picked one up. I was kind of hoping for the lower resolution but did get the high res. I think it will grow on me - even though it's small the text is sharp. It's the AUO monitor and it looks great to me. I'll post the batch number later on.

A couple of things to note:

1.) The drive came as one giant partition which is slightly annoying. I guess I can always do a fresh install.
2.) I hear some very light clicking noise coming from the harddrive. Sounds like it's from the bottom right near the wireless switch; assuming that's where it is. Anyone else get this?

    Otherwise, great laptop.

you can change it in the settings and make the text bigger. you are lucky you got the better res...i tried, but couldnt get it because my best buy didnt have any. I dont really care because i dont think id use that res much at all though.

Question...i moved from CRT to this LCD screen, and viewing angle sucks! Is this the case for everyone or did i just get screwed?

Yeah, compared to a crt no LCD screen can compare with image quality, viewing angle, etc but as far as LCD's go I think the AUO WUXGA panel in my 7805u is pretty good. Both of my FX (6864FX and 7805u FX) machines have great looking displays. If you think it's really bad then maybe take a trip to the store and check out a few other LCD displays to see if yours really is poor compared to others. If you find that it is subpar then you could exchange it.

Either way, good luck with yours.

Pretty much the same as he said.

Now before the 7805u, I actually got the X1 Asus and those viewing angles were horrendous. I can tell you my 7805u has great viewing angles as far as I'm concerned. Your best bet is to head over to Best Buy and check out the display models to know for sure.

the display was a x1200 res version, this one is a x900 res version...but the viewing angles should be about the same, also lighting is completely different. i mean, it seems good, but my lcd hdtv has way better viewing angles than this does.

When I play games, especially crysis, on the default settings, my GPU reaches temperatures of up to 98 degrees celsius!!!!!

Nobody else seems to be having this problem; what might the cause be? any help will be greatly appreciated!

GPU heatsink probably isnt seated properly. If you got the 1920x1200 screen you may want to think twice about returning it, but if its a 1440x900 i'd just take it back to best buy and swap it out unless you've had it beyond the return period, in which case you'll have to get g-way to replace it or fix the heatsink.

I would say take it back and exchange it , tell them taht the gpu is overheating and it's defective. Should be able to do an exchange with out getting dingd the 15% restock.

hwmonitor from cpuz.com is pretty good, records the maximum temps too so you don't have to try and ALT-TAB back and forth to see how hot things got. I didn't see above about 68C on the GPU with the back of the laptop kicked up 1/4" or so.

how would i go about fixing the heatsink? is it a complex procedure? any tell-tale signs that its dysfunctional from looking at it? could installing the dox driver help dropping the temp from 98C?

Acer bought Gateway's non-business divisions in 2007 when MCP bought Gateway's business divisions. The FX machines were introduced in '08. I'm guessing Acer uses the same manufacturers for these as they do for Acer branded machines, but I could be wrong.

I managed to catch the BB sale of this unit the day after the end of the $1049 sale, tho I thought it still worth it at $1149. I also had a WD Scorpio Black 320G that I bought for the 6860, and figured a good synergy with this model to do the RAID0 striping.

I would like to add some insights in comparing some previous issues I had with the 6860:

    1) Game load times were pitiful compared to my desktop setup. I would nod off waiting for screens to load on Neverwinter Nights 2. The RAID 0 on the 7805u fixed that issue nicely.

    2) The per pixel fullscreen shading engine is a shader killer in NWN2. I had to keep Shadows on Low in order to play the game on the 8800M GTS @ 1440x900 2xFSAA. The 9800M GTS handles Shadows: Full very well, at 1920x1200 2xFSAA. (25-60 fps range w/ Triple Buffering via D3DOverride 1.6) 710 overclock gives min 31 FPS.

    3) Gaming in the dark was a PITA sometimes due to the dark lettering on the number keys on 6860. They used a lighter orange on 7805u, which is no longer a problem. :)

I picked up a Targus 4-Port USB Chillhub for the lappy, and keeps my overclocked unit at about 63C during load, and also supplies much needed extra ports. It's on sale for $29 @ Bestbuy.

Overall, the 7805u is quite an improvement to the venerable P-6860.

Well if they're like me coming from a more pedestrian notebook it may be rather surprising, my more mundane notebooks never cycled the fan like this one does. But also I think this notebook has a pretty limited range of fan speed control, I would think they could have cycled the fan a little more smoothly than it does on this laptop...
