my temps seem okay, i understand how the fan works, but its kind of really annoying in my opinion. are other laptops less loud?

if i exchange it, can i cite this as a problem for me? also, the guy told me if i dont get a x1200 screen i can exchange it as well, will they accept what he said?

I just replaced mine. I cited the fan as one of the reasons. However I was also crashing from dvd play. The tech put down the fact the screen lost resolution when you went over the menu options as the reason for the return.

This one still does the same thing but doesn't seem to have screen artifacting problems. Have dvd playing in windows aero theme and no troubles so far. *crosses fingers*

Hey all, I'm new to this forum and just want to say thanks to everyone who contributes. This forum is awesome.

I purchased this lappy a couple of weeks ago and just now have had time to start playing with it. So far everything seems in order with one exception, my Windows Experience Index is only 5.1 because it shows a 5.1 on the CPU, everything else is 5.9 except for the harddrive at 5.8.

What gives, anyone else experience this? CPU-Z shows mu CPU Specs as follows:

Intel Mobile Core 2 DUO P8400
    Penyrn
    Socket P (478)
    45nm
    2260 mhz with 8.5x mulitplier

Looks good right? But why only a 5.1 on my CPU experience? I haven't seen anyone post anything lower than a 5.8 overall due to the harddrive.

    My P8400 gave me a 5.2. Now, with the P9600, I have a 5.5! :p

Thanks BobXX, that makes me feel a little better. I could have sworn I saw others post a CPU experience of 5.9 though, I will have to search again.

Mine "out of the box" were:

    Vista Experience Numbers:
    Processor-5.2
    Memory(RAM)-5.9
    Graphics-5.9
    Gaming Graphics-5.9
    Primary HD-5.7
    Overall -5.2.

I wonder if those getting 5.8 for the HD either have a different HD or updated drivers out of the box?

hey i decided i will return this for a different one tomorrow...just wanted to thank you guys, you have all been insanely helpful. i wish people in all forums were this helpful.

i have no idea what im going to get, but unless they refuse, my reason to exchange it will be that the display wasnt the same as the display model. the sales clerk said this would be okay when i bought it, so if they say anything ill tell them that too. and the fan and the weird clicking noises.

    :(

Ok, so no need to worry about a CPU WEI of 5.1 - seems close enough to the norm. I did find the other post where someone got a 5.9 CPU WEI, but it was after installing Windows 7 beta. It also scored a 7.9! GPU WEI on Windows 7 beta. I was worried for a minute there, but I am new to Vista with this lappy. It's not as bad as it has been made out to be.

I might just have to try Windows 7 out though when my new harddrive arrives for a Raid 0 configuration. I picked up the same drive that came with the lappy from Newegg for 79.99 - it's now 89.99 two days later, go figure ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136280). I also have the bluetooth module( http://laptopparts.vivotechnology.net/Items/!msc-hp-513?&caSKU=!msc-hp-513&caTitle=NEW%20DV9000/V2000%20Bluetooth%20Module%20w/cable%20398433-001%2c%20BCM92405NMD) on the way and will redo the heatsinks with AS5 when I have my lappy torn apart.

I figure since I saved a boat load of money on this puppy over the MSI 725 which I was waiting for, I would spend it on the accessories. In addition to what I mentioned above I got the following accessories:

    Skooba Shuttle Backpack - http://www.amazon.com/Skooba-R708-102-Shooka-Shuttle-Backpack/dp/B000X66LPO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1232665017&sr=8-1
It's a bit spendy but I love it, fits the lappy perfect (not with 9 cell battery attached) and has plenty of extra room while not being to thick. The Slappa is nice too but screams "Steal my expensive laptop from me".

    17" Widescreen Neoprene Sleeve - http://www.amazon.com/Widescreen-Laptop-Notebook-Sleeve-Soft/dp/B001N4KGNS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1232665180&sr=1-2
This thing was on the cheap and fits perfectly, goes on and off with ease and still fits the Skooba backpack with it on! It even fits with the 9 cell battery with a stretch. This should have no problem going through TSA on the laptop either as it meets all of their criteria. Big plus for me since I travel a lot.

Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse - Got this from Costco for $40, cheaper than I could find it on the net.

    Next item, custom cooler . . .

.. Well one of the reviews for the one I showed you says "Seems like it will fit most 17inchers" Or something like that. And for that price I'm willing to put the laptop in without the battery attached lol

Yeah my Processor score is 5.2 with the Vista it came with out of the box. HDD is 5.8.

yea that does not make a difference at all or nothing that anyone would be a be able to tell. I just think that it is kind of humorous that how this forum picks up every little detail which is good in some cases, and bad when it leads to paranoia.

that is why i joined and what made me buy this laptop from the knowledgeable people hear

I left my laptop on my bed (hasn't overheated before, thought it was fairly well ventilated) and came back into my room about 15 minutes later and rear left part of the fan was white hot and the room reaked of burning plastic. I left it off on my targus cooler and it seems to be working fine now but im worried...

edit: btw I was running GTA III at full settings, even though it really could not have pushed it to the limit....

Eh just like the 5.7 is just randomly different as the usual 5.8 most of us have, same for your 5.9. Technically to Vista its better, but to us we couldn't tell the difference in performance with our own eyes :p

Eh, just never leave your computer on the bed especially while gaming... One of the big no-no's. Did you monitor your temps when that happen?

    Hell all,

First post. This site has been a great source of research for me and after readings tons of sites and stuff here, I took the plunge and got the P-7805 about a week ago. I had Windows 7 on it for a while, but Daemon Tools doesn't work yet so I did a fresh install of Vista Ultimate 64.

I also did the GPU overclocking and the CPU undervolting. My CPU is a champ. I have it at the lowest voltage setting it will allow and Orthos'd for 3 hours straight without a BSOD. Since it is the lowest it can go, I locked the multiplier at max and the voltage at the lowest. My CPU idles around 22-23 degrees Celsius and caps out around 55 degrees Celsius while under full load.

I'll be re-seating and pasting the heatsinks next.

    Resolution:
My first one was the higher resolution and I immediately returned it. I really do prefer the regular/lower resolution. Playings games in the native resolution is important to me. Not only that, but this is more than enough for a 17" screen. It isn't like the video card can't pump out higher if you connect it to an external monitor/TV. I'm really happy with the lower resolution and actually prefer it.

    Fans and Heat:
I've noticed the left-hand side fan quite a bit (the GPU fan). It does do the quick whir quite frequently. Temperature-wise, it seems to be normal, but I would definitely prefer it to be cooler. It isn't all that loud unless I'm gaming and even then, the speakers or headphones tend to drown it out.

My CPU fan, after the undervolting, almost never comes on at all - not that I can hear anyway.

The only heat issue I have is with the hard drive. On my lap (I don't use a cooler), the HD will get to 50-52 degrees Celsius. On a table, its not an issue.

    Drivers:
Using all latest official Vista 64 bit drivers from Intel and nVidia.

    Crashes:
    Haven't had any.

    Games and Movies:
So far, I've tried Fallout 3 and it works like a champ. I've also watched 2 movies in Media Center without issues and I've watched 2 dl'd HD movies - 1 with VLC and the other with Media Player Classic. Have had no isssues.

    Cons:
Weight. When it comes to laptops, there are 3 things: Price/Value, Portability/Size, Performance. Its hard to get all 3. This thing definitely gets 2 out of 3 which is all you can usually ask for. In this regard, its hard to put this as a con. I use this as a gaming/development machine - a mobile desktop replacement.

3 USB ports. And, not having any USB Ports on the rear is a little untidy when it comes to mouse use.

Loud touchpad button clicks. The keyboard is awesome and quiet, but the touchpad buttons are a little loud. Hopefully this means it is built well and will last a long time :)

Speakers are craptastic. Its a laptop - they are supposed to suck, but not this bad, imo. :) The grills for the speakers are huge, but the drivers themselves are tiny. Hell, they could have doubled the number of drivers and still fit them behind the grills. Oh well.

    Overall?
I'm extremely happy with this purchase. The ability to add more RAM, solid state drives, RAID, and upgrade the CPU makes this thing a lot more future-proof than most laptops. The price to performance ratio (value) is amazing. I do game development in my spare time and use a ton of taxing GIS/CS computational stuff at school and this thing smokes all the lab desktops in terms of computational and rendering power.

I'd definitely recommend this laptop to a friend.

Thank you very much for this research! You have saved a couple of hours of my life). Now, I don't need search 9.1.* driver and comparing him with new one. I know, turning off touchpad when mouse is plugged in is very common problem. And this trouble hadn't stop you! I very respect you approach!

    Thanks again

Does anyone know how to get the media/quick launch buttons working. Only the volume seems to work for me. Ideally I would like to have them work with media player so i can just hit forward when its on a song I don't like.

I'd say for him it would be really easy. The box and stickers advertise the lower resolution so it wouldn't be much of a problem.

Now for the opposite, I would think it would be a little trickier. However, if your Best Buy has a display model that is 1920x1200 then I would definitely use that as your excuse to exchange the 1440x900.

    Hope this helps.

Are you still using the vista install that came on it? Mine worked fine out of the box, when I went to Win XP the DVD, pause/play and music note stopped working, but fast forward/rev and volume all worked regardless. If you've reinstalled vista you may need to install the hotstart button update, you can get it under the P7811FX section on gateways site.

    Hello everyone. My first post.
I'm not in the U.S., but in a few days a friend will buy the P-7805U for me. After everything I read, I have a question: everything is now on the market comes with the display 1440x900 or there are some with 1900x1200? That is the great dilemma. When the P-7805U appeared with 1440x900 on the market, what date?
What should I do when going to the store to get one with dispaly of 1900x1200? Can check without opening the box?
I am interested in your answers, because I have 2 days to make up my mind and I want to get the crew to 1900x1200.
    Greetings from Romania!

It was easy for me. "The box states 1440x900 but this screen is higher than that. The text is too small."

I imagine it would be hard to open and return a fully-functional laptop that operates exactly as the sticker describes.

Even with a 1920x1200 model on display, who's to say he even looked at it? Maybe after reading an online review, he had to have one, and just went to BB and bought it without checking for the display model? Or, if on a weekend day, maybe the display model was being used by other customers, so he didn't have a chance to see it? Lot's of excuses!!! :)

Best bet is to ask geek squad to check before buying. I just came back from BB , Orange, CT. The display is 1440x900. There is no firm date of when you get what that I am aware of. Some even prefer the lower resolution, see post above.

The price of the P-7805 FX is now 1149 at BB with the lower screen resolution. The BB flyer this weekend showed the screen as HD, so 720p is HD. I thought somebody posted that this model is in the outlet or discontinued products at BB. Confused as to BB pricing.

i bought mine yesterday and lucky for me it's 1920x1200. yay..

i actually checked best buy near my work place 3 days ago and when i asked one of sales man there, he told me it went out of stock long time ago and everyone was asking for first batch model. so i gave up and left. then i started to think. since only first batch models are 1920x1200, if i don't act now, chances of finding that model will be impossible. this laptop just came out 3 weeks afterall.. so i went to different best buy and asked sales man there if they have any first batch model. apparently, this one didn't know why i was asking that question but he said yes. then i told him if there's anyway to make sure its resolution but he said no, i will have to buy it to check it out and if it's not what i want, they will charge 15% restocking fee.
whatever.. i took the chance since that best buy was located more isolated place and not as crowded as the other one. so i bought it and took it to car and turned it on. boom.. small letters.. yeah.. it was 1920x1200.. haha..
it's just too bad i didn't get this when it first came out cuz i never thought price would go up by $100 that fast. darn.. it's good i got higher resolution screen but now i can't get over how i could have saved $106 over this.
    sux.. =(

Yeah, but don't forget to continue to check the price on BB.com and the store. If they happen to put the thing back on sale for $1049 within your "return and exchange period" (14 days), you're entitled to a refund of the difference - you never know. I'm sure any price change will be quickly posted in this forum as well so..... ;)

Just a quick question..I want to put some kind of thermal paste on my cpu, but before I even buy the stuff, can I wipe it off/take it off, whatever later on? Maybe in a year or so I was thinking of putting in a 2.53 ghz processor or something, so if I can't, then I would be screwed :S

EDIT: I really think someone, or I will..should make an official thread, we get the same questions all the time, also so people will stop posting switching CPU in P-7805u threads and accessory threads.

Gateway always seems to be releasing new ones of these models....When do you think the next one will be released and what do you think the specs will be on those? I am wondering if I should wait or get one now.

Well I would have rather made it, have had this idea in my head for a while and I was thinking, links to different things, like changing the processor, where to buy, specs and such :D
