Where can I get a new CPU for this notebook if I chose to do so later down the road....
-
It counts on what cpu you want but the best bet is to look around at the time. Better deals can be had from different dealers at any specific time. Also if you are talking about down the line you may find better cpu's choices than what is even available now. the P series could be beyond the p9600's and at some point may even be offered as a Extreme version.

Has anyone tried 3Dmark06 in 1920x1200 resolution?
Just bought it and ran it with 1920x1200 and I scored something like 8002
(With 710/950/1750 clocks) -
Did anybody figure out how to work the W, A, S, D keys on the keyboard which showed yellow arrows, navigation keys?
Tried Alt, Fn, Shift Ctrl, Windows key combination and none of them seems to activate the keys.
Nothing in the HW manual. -
Higher res will equal a lower score..................
-
These keys do not have any double function, they are just painted so that in FPS you can find them easily. Just in case the big WSDA letters were not clear enough
I wish they were lighted, or something. Yeah, actually I would love a fully lighted keyboard, with the battery life I am getting right now it would not be that straining. -
It is funny though, I have the 1920x1200 and now I go to work and use a 17" 1280x1024 LCD. At work the icons and text just look so HUGE, it is almost irritating using it. I'll admit at first the screen on the laptop seemed small but now that I'm used to it I really like it.
-
Perhaps I'm late to the game on the observation I'm about to detail, but I haven't seen it mentioned here:
Like others, as I noted on page 209 of this thread, I was concerned about the GPU temp and the perpetual loop of fan revving that seemed to occur ever one or two minutes--the GPU goes up to 50C, the fan brings it down to 43C, then it goes back up to 50C, etc, and so on ad infinitum. When mine was doing this, I had the resolution at 1600X1024--it hadn't occurred to me to use 1600X1200 and crank the DPI to 120, which I've just done. And now, after doing that, the fan on the GPU is consistently quiet and the temp doesn't deviate from 46C-47C. I hope it stays this way, and I hope I'm not too much of an idiot for just realizing this fix.
Also, I would be interested if someone could explain to me why this is working--why the GPU seemed to be working harder at the lower resolution. -
Lol I know that much... I'm asking what OTHERS score is with 1920x1200, to compare for fun
Yeah I would have loved a lighted keyboard, even would have settled for lit WSAD keys AND the ctrl key
-
Maybe its just a coincidence? Have you changed your cooling solution too? (Maybe using it on a desk instead of a bed, using it in a room with the degrees lower than before, etc) all those little things will change your temperature.
-
Nope, I've changed nothing else. In fact, I reverted to the display settings I have been using (1600X1024, 96dpi) and about every 90 seconds the GPU reaches 50C, then the fan revs and brings it down. With the display at 1600X1200 & 120dpi, it takes about 4 minutes for the GPU to reach 50C, and the fan brings it down quicker.
-
Hmm, maybe it was taking more GPU power to fit the lower res to the bigger screen?
Either way, oh well, as long as it didn't raise your temperatures, good job
-
On mine I noticed with the nVidia system monitor the GPU, MEM and shader do not go all the way down in 2D. where native the GPU goes to 168 Mhz in 1600x1050 it only goes down to 275 Mhz. This could be your issue as well...........
-
It may have something to do with the fact that it has to stretch the 1600x1024 both horizontally and vertically while 1600x1200 it only has to stretch horizontally to fill the screen, so its doing less work to interpolate the resolution.
-
Yay, someone that backed up the solution I thought of a couple posts ago, thanks
-
I know its been posted before but I haven't seen a link...
Is this the HDD in our systems?

Or which one is it? (For RAID0) -
WD3200BEKT
Yes, that is the one in my 5u. -
But this is the one you want (2)

Has anyone had any issues of the power pack getting REAL hot, and making a humming noise?
Or is it just mine? -
Mine is just warm. but it's cold where I am. Ambient is about 68F. Cannot hear any noise because the forced heat air is blowing.
-
They are out of stock but 1TB raid0 7200 RPM, Yummy..............

I got a weird hum to mine.. hmm.
-
My 7801u has a hitachi!! why?? WD is much better
-
crazysoccerman14 Notebook Consultant
So does mine... pretty sure its normal -
Well I want the identical one to the one already in my 7805u so I can just buy one and use RAID. I linked the correct one, right?
-
No, this is the exact one for the P7805u............
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136280
EDIT;
Get two of the previously mentioned 500 Gig drives to replace your existing drive if you want a 1TB Raid0 and an extra 340 media drive if you get an enclosure. with the original you only get a 640 Gig Raid0.............. -
Both TANWare and SemiGamer's original link are for the WD3200BEKT, so both would provide the exact same drive.
T's link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136280
SG's link: http://www.buy.com/prod/western-dig...he-7200-rpm-notebook/q/loc/101/208270281.html
That is the drive I have, but as Persio points out, we don't all have the same drive.
So, yes, SemiGamer, if that is the drive you have, and you want another exact drive, you have it right. -
I just noticed a humming on my power brick, but the heat so far is normal as far as laptop battery packs go.
-
alright, well atleast I'm not the only one
-
Dude, again this is well documented. Do you ever look around this forum? Plenty of people have gotten faulty power bricks from Gateway and have had there's replaced.
-
Still waiting for mine.....
-
What does that have to do with me asking about the 7805u's specific one?
-
Did anyone get a defective unit yet? If so does gateway take good care of your system in the repair center? because I have been saving for this laptop forever and I got a defective video card so I sent it into gateway but Im wondering if they are precaucious with their work, Ive heard people say that refurbished units are bad.
-
I downloaded the 180.84 video driver for this laptop as suggested on here in another post, but when i try to install it, Nvidia setup says it could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware, setup will now exit. Any suggestions?
-
You will need a modified INF file to include the 9800m GTS....
-
Well because it's the same power brick. Not to mention the fact of what I was referencing was a lot of people after the 7805u was available for sale that were mentioning hissing coming from their power bricks. And then more and more noticed the problem. And people called up Gateway and had them replaced under warranty and/or bought other power supply units.
Apparently there needs to be everything organized into a sticky about the laptops because people come in and ask the same questions or mention the same things over and over because no one uses the search function on the boards/for each specific thread. -
It happens.
-
Alrighty thanks man.
Yeah I think mine has that once, because the way I found that one is by going to the Device Manager and it says that model number, so I searched the model number from device manager and thats what I found :] -
People that use Regcure read this!
Alrighty, so I installed Regcure since I've always used it for all my other computers.
I ran the cleaner, it found thousands of "problems" in the registry, so i choose to let it fix them all. After it got done, the next time I rebooted the computer was screwed..
All it would do was boot into windows, No Icons on the desktop, clicking the start menu would take LITERALLY 5 minutes for it to come up. Than, after letting it idle for about 4minutes, ALL kinds of the windows "Program stopped working, Searching for solution" With the "Close Program" option only, And most of them were all "(Driver Name Here) has stopped working" And "Ntune Has Stopped Working" and ETC.
Absolutely nothing would fix it, safe mode worked and everything but its the only way the system would work (Obviously since it doesn't load many drivers)
So finally as my last resort I had to do a System Restore (Luckily I made one right before I ran Regcure so I just used that one) And all worked fine again.
So I recommend NOT using Regcure on this computer.
-
Guessing your using Doxs?
If your using doxs and its your first time installing them,
Fallow my guide:
Instructions: (Bare with me)
1) Right click on "Computer" in the start menu.
2) Click Properties.
3) Click "Device Manager" on the left.
4) Press the + sign next to Display Adapters.
5) Double Click NVIDIA Geforce 9800M GTS (blah blah blah)
6) Click the driver tab on the top.
7) Click "Update Driver".
8) Choose "Browse My Computer for Driver Software"
9) Choose "Let Me Pick From a List of devices on my computer"
10) Click "Have Disk"
11) Click Browse.
12) Go to OS (C:
13) Look for something like Vista64_Dox_18120 and click it.(The numbers at the end depend on which drivers your installing).
14) Click Bal.
15) Click Ok.
16) Find 9800M GTS in the list.
You should be able to do it from there yourself.
Let me know if you have any problems.
EDIT: Make sure you've uninstalled the old drivers before this.... -
I installed the 181.22 DOX drivers and while there is no increase I can percieve they do offer alot more resolution choices. So for now it seems I'll be keeping them............

I am on my second P-7805u this week. I loaded up my farovite game on it this is WoW. As far as games go WoW is not all that technologically demanding IMO but you would not think that trying to get it to run on this machine.
The first one had was the 1900x1200 resolution version and the frame rates were around 15-20 fps. I played around with it for a few days. I DL'd the latest drivers from nVidia and the frame rate got up to 60 fps but after 15 minutes or so the system would completely lockup. I got fed up after a week and took it ack to best Buy and exchanged it for another.
The second one was the 1440x900 version. Once again the only thing I loaded up on this machine was WoW. And guess what... the frame rate was actually worse. most of the time the fps hovered around 8 fps.
I have loaded this game on a variety of machines and have never encountered this. I am currently playing the game on my 2 yr old HP Dv9260nr that has maybe half the power that the P-7805u has and the frame rate average 30 fps in the busy areas up to 60 fps in less populated areas.
I really wish I could figure out the issue as I really do not want to pay a $200 restocking fee if I have to return this one. but I really have no use for a computer that I am having a problem getting a "simple" game as WoW to run on and I am not going to wait around for nVidia, Blizzard or Gateway to come out with a fix as I am sure that they are just going to point fingers at each other...
Now this is just my experience as i am sure there are plenty of people out there that having WoW running properly on their unit. Still to have this issue with 2 separate units of this model baffles me... -
I play Everquest 2 on all my FX's, no problems, its a very CPU intensive game too, good for benchmarking. Running on High Settings using the dox 181.22
-
Same here. I upgraded solely for the added resolution choices. I'm currently running 1600x1000 which wasn't a choice on the stock drivers.
-
I would play with different drivers, monitor temps, and make sure your Vista power plan is set to "High Performance". And of course, stay plugged in while doing this.
