Usually I overclock mine to 715/960/1780
Over that it usually artifacts and freezes up when running 3Dmark06 or a game :)

Howdy all! I love this forum! Helped me decide which laptop to buy me and my son. Bought 2 7805u's from Best Buy on Feb 5, 09. We both got lucky and recieved the 1920 res. The batch #'s were the same on both boxes they were... I035354 These were bought in Modesto California. They had 6 when I purchased these two. Ok... Don't know if this should even of been posted in this thread but oh well... Just thought I'd pass on the info! These machines ROCK! Enjoy all. Bill

    Hey garbage, or anyone

I am thinking about buying this computer, congrats on your two purchases. My only concern is the 1920x1200 res screen $1,150 or is it more?

    Thanks,
    Dan

If you get it at Best Buy it's kind of a crap shoot as to which display you will get, 1440x900 or 1920x1200. Check out some of the threads on this as the batch numbers might be able to be matched to known 1920x1200 or 1440x900 units. However, it's still only $1149. Your other option is to get the 7801u from Newgg.com which is $1199 and always comes with the 1920x1200 screen. It's the same exact computer.

    Hope this helps.

The first 7805u came with 1920x1200 screen, but the box and labeling still stated they were 1440x900 screens. Later they put the 1440x900 screen on the 7805u. Yes it's the same price for either because as far as gateway ans best buy care they are they same system.

One way of looking to see if the unit you're buying has a 1920 screen is to check the serial number on the outside of the box.

    If the serial is
    LXW430XO138******** Then its a 1920x1200 unit
    LXW430XO139******** Then its a 1440x900 unit

The serial number is the middle of three upc codes on the side of the box

Ok, if I were to order online at Best Buy's site and then once it arrives at my door step and I find out its not the 1920x1200 res screen. Would I be able to take the computer to my local Best Buy and have them replace the screen?

Thanks for the next post about verifying the screen code.

Well, if you do *not* break the seal on the box, you should be able to return the laptop to your local BB and get a full *refund* (i.e. no 15% restock charge). I don't think they can do something like an even exchange, though, and they certainly aren't going to "replace the screen" for you.

You could, however, check the actual boxes in the store and see if you can find one with the "1920 serial" imprinted on the side. But then you could have done that in the first place - *before* you ordered online and discovered BB shipped you a unit with a 1440 display.

Hey guys, first time poster here with a little problem, hopefully you can help me out. I purchased the 7805 approximately 3 weeks ago, and everything was working perfectly, up until last night that is. It was the 1st time I was using quicktime to view a rip of a DVD I made using DVDfab. As usual, quicktime prompted me if I wanted it to automatically apply itself to all available media. I selected sure, and went to full-screen the video. It was then that I got a BSOD, and now, everytime i attempt to watch any dvd/video, or play any dvd based game, I get an operating error BSOD. I really am not quite adept as to what to do now, and was really hoping someone might be able to help me. Much thanks in advance.

Easiest way out is to use "System Restore" back to a point you were operating properly.....

System Restore as TANWare stated, or try updating your display drivers. Or try DivX player instead of quicktime (I use DivX for everything except .FLV format videos)

I've posted this same ques in another thread ..
Would like to know how the bad, average and good score looks like on 3dmark06 and 3dmark vantage ? Have no idea looking at the scores online as it looks so dismal during comparision inspite of having 1GB GPU mem while the one that outscores has less GPU as well as sys mem.

Well, I tried system restore. 1st, on the day prior to the problem, and that didnt work. Went back a few more days, to 5 days before, and am still experiencing the same problems. Everytime media player attemptes to play a dvd, it just displays a grey screen, and everytime I try Crysis, i get an immediate BSOD. I guess at this point, my only solution will be to re-format? Didn't want to go through all that, but I'm not about to pay geek squad to fix a brand new laptop that should be working.

Stock hardware 8800 or so is average for no overclocks in Vista, low 9000s with an overclock in vista. I think my 9800 in windows XP with the GPU overclocked to 700 core 900 (1800DDR) mem is about the highest on all stock hardware. Guys with upgraded cpus are into the 10,000s even under vista though.

I think TANWare and SemiGamer mean you should do a Gateway Factory Recovery, not a System Restore. You can do this one of two ways, Reboot and hit F10 while rebooting and follow instructions, or type Gateway Recovery Management in the search box and follow directions. Either of those two choices will recovery your computer to factory specs by loading it off of the recovery partition. Make sure you save your files to another hard drive or another computer as they will be wiped out. You can also do a factory restore from your backup disks if you made them already.

Morning or afternoon or Night, depending on where you are. I recently picked up this machine. Everything works great outside of World of Warcraft, Log in and my Latency shoots over 300 and FPS sits around 36, doesn't matter if settings are maxed or adjusted or lowest possible setting. Just wondering if its something with Vista or the Nic in the machine.

Seeing as my old hp desktop runs around 120 latency and 18 fps, no new cables or other parts.

    Thanks

Thats BS. I have the 1440x900 and it looks just fine for desktop and amazing in games. The 9800m GTS isnt all that powerful and will go alot farther with the 1440x900 in gaming. A year from now most people will have to run interpolated on that higher res screen to get a decent framerate. No thanks.

This may have been posted before but I have no desire to search 230 pages to find out, here's the question:

Does anyone have a straight forward way of getting Ubuntu and Vista (64) onto the 7805u.

I called Gateway and they wouldn't supply a Vista disc, only a recovery management disc which I can make anyways.

So if I ever want to format incase there is a problem the only way I can get vista back is the management disc (which I'm not sure if it would erase Ubuntu as well or only format the Vista/Recovery? Partitions.)

I have no Vista Disc and Vista (64) is on it currently. How can I
    (A) Get a Vista Disc
    (B) Install Ubuntu (obv download CD, but how to install it)

Also as a side note: I got the 1920 res by haggling with the manager saying that they would sell the floor model (which had the good res) at 15% off anyways when they were finally aloud to after the stock was gone, so I paid ticket for a brand new floor model with the good res. (Didn't want to deal with hassle of batch numbers). No problems so far! Very Happy!

Just wanted to let you guys know that I was able to get everything back to a working condition. I did try changing/updating my drivers, but that remained unsuccessful. So, after system restore, and driver updates were unable to address this, I just did a gateway factory restore. I had already made my backup discs, so I figured this was going to be the best route. Sure, I have to set everything back up, but at least its working now. Thanks for all the help guys.

It's entirely possible that the latency issue doesn't have anything to do with your machine, although you'll want to check your firewall to see if it's affecting WoW's connection.

It's odd that your FPS doesn't change based on your video settings. There's seriously no difference between the lowest setting and highest setting? My p-7805u works excellent on WoW and I get 60+ fps on medium settings, but when I turn it up to the highest settings, I can't even get 36... usually around 25-30.

Make sure you don't have other processes going that might be taking up lots of your resources.

I was wondering if you could somehow use a Playstation 3 remote for games like call of duty on this notebook or if there is a good controller that looks and feels the same as a Playstation 3 controller that is used with PC's.

I currently have 67 processes open at this time, I just disabled Macafee firewall, and will test. Also windows firewall went bye bye early on.

I usually only have ~15 at one time. the "include processes from other users" check-box on Windows Task Manager is un-checked of course.

Is it 67 when you include those other processes, or is it 67 even without? Because if so, then I think 67 is a really high number.

Latency in Dalaran around 236, FPS 28-45, still seems out of whack to what this machine should be putting out. Appreciate all the help I can get .

Any processes I should be getting rid of? I also went and tried the vista tweaks. but that is a whole different issue.

    Thanks

236 latency isn't really all that bad. I'm no expert, but I would consider the latency issue having more to do with Blizzard than with you, or possibly with your ISP. Are you using cable or DSL? What kind of bandwidth plan?

I'm definitely no expert on which processes to kill. I'm sure you've already tried this, but some video settings in WoW will have a greater impact on your performance, such as ground clutter, shadow quality, texture quality, and sometimes your distance setting.

Comcast and speed no idea, not thier lowest and not thier highest , sitting in exodar which is dead and lat is 176 and fps is 65, which should be the norm there abouts, my wow settings are all middle of the road atm and the shadows is off as is the other big ones.

Probably going to start from scratch and wipe it and start over and only install what I really need. But atm going to keep testing things

    Thanks

im planning to get this laptop this week on BB but whats the difference between the 1920x1200 and 1440x900 resolution? is it noticeable? does it just affect the desktop size/color or does it affect the actual graphics on game? thanks...

I assume your assumption of my assuming you agree with that was correct. :)

The 1440x900 is better for you if you've got bad eyesight.
The 1920x1200 more crisp if you have the eyes to see it.
There will be some differences in graphics in the games. With 1920x1200 it will be clearer.

The first 7805u I got was the 1440. The HDD died during the first day, so I exchanged it and got the 1900 by chance.

Having used both, here are my thoughts:
    1) 1900 is too small for me to use everyday as my desktop res. You can use 1440 (or another non-native res) for this, though. It looks fuzzy at first right after switching resolutions, but seems to sharpen up. I guess there is an adjustment period for the monitor. I split the difference and use 1600x1000 as my normal res for web/email/office.

    2) Where the 1900 comes in handy is during games. While it is not going to compete with the baddest gaming desktop out there, I was playing Left4Dead last night for the first time and at max settings (+2xAA/4xAF). It will get close on games like Crysis, but I usually have to tweak (lower AA, etc.) to get it to run smoothly at 1900. I usually run it at 1600. Also, more res is neat for apps like Google Earth where you can fit more on the screen at once.

So, what I guess I am saying is, get the 1900 if you can, and you can adjust the resolution down if needed. Some say they see blurring when running games in non-native res, but I have only seen that during the first 3-4 minutes after switching res's, then it clears up. For example, right when you switch resolutions, the text will look fuzzy on the NVIDIA control panel. For me, that goes away after a few minutes and it looks normal again. I am pretty certain this is not just the eye-shock of dropping resolution because there is tiny text at the bottom of my Wallpaper that is illegible right after changing resolution, and right now I can read it just fine. Of course, YMMV.

    I hope this helps.

    Hey Flytrap -

Did you adjust the Font size (DPI) to 120 on that 1920 screen?

    It helps somewhat, too.

I am trying to use a HDMI cord from my PS3 to this notebook to see if I could use the screen to play games however when I hit the Fn + F4 nothing happens. I also tried using my HDMI cord from my desktop to the notebook and did the same thing and nothing happened again. What am I missing in order to use the screen of the notebook or other things?

I have read through wikipedia what the differences are between RAID 1 and RAID 0 and it said for RAID 0

"RAID 0 is also used in some gaming systems where performance is desired and data integrity is not very important. However, real-world tests with games have shown that RAID-0 performance gains are minimal, although some desktop applications will benefit.[1][2] Another article examined these claims and concludes that "Striping does not always increase performance (in certain situations it will actually be slower than a non-RAID setup), but in most situations it will yield a significant improvement in performance." [3]"

Basically I want to know since my notebook is a gaming notebook as well as doing normal everyday computer stuff which RAID would be better for my system. These are the two Hard Drives which are in my notebook:
Western Digital Scorpio 320 GB 7200 RPM
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1213047091665

Also I would like to know if I have to do a compete format of my notebook in order to use RAID. Basically is it worth it or should I just use it as extra storage space which I really don't need since my desktop has 1.5 TB worth of space in which I can just copy and move things over.

If I do have to do a reformat is there some way I can put a mirror image of my hard drive onto a portable hard drive and just move it back over? If so how would I go about doing that?

    Thank you for your time

AFAIK, the only two companies offering that media are Memorex and Fuji. It sure doesn't appear anywhere near as prevalent as the lightscribe stuff.

Best bet (and probably price) would be to look for the Memorex-branded media online at the likes of Amazon or J&R. I haven't seen Memorex Labelflash disks in retail stores other than BB and Office Depot (not for a lack of looking, either) and they typically run ~$17 for a 10-pack.

    Hey, CNet finally reviewed the P-7805u, h e r e.

While the reviewer isn't so happy with the 1440 x 900 screen, it would seem he'd really like the P-7801u's screen, and, of course, the 1920 x 1200 that some of us got on the 5u.

I know, I got Memorex from Amazon.com. Not the greatest but more than sufficient for basic needs, like I did the 3 DVD restore disc's.

RAID0 isn't a big improvement for gaming because it mostly helps with write and read tests - something that doesn't happen too much in gaming.
