What resoulation do you guys run 3Dmark06 in to get your scores? I use default 1280x1024 although I play games and stuff at 1920x1200

1280x1024 is considered the standard unless your monitor doesn't support 1024 then you're limited to 1280x800.

I'll give the new one a try if I ever get tired of AVG since I've already paid for it :) Thanks.

O&O has been fantastic for me. Because of some vista "feature" my harddrive space looses like 1 GB a day (Literally, when I turn it on say Monday and say I have 100GB left, by Friday night I'll have 95GB without installing or downloading anything at all, I've tried everything (System restores back to the day my HDD displayed the right number, nothing worked) than I was told to do a full defrag each time it does that and O&O brings it back everytime so personally I need it. If your wondering if it works better than Vista's Disk Defrag or Auslogics disc defrag, yeah it definitely does. But than again you have to pay for O&O :)

Just this as my first gaming laptop and except for one crash, it's been the only Windows computer I actually enjoy using. I've messed around with drivers a little bit and I got rid of all the bloatware, but is there anything else I should do? Right now I'm running the most recent drivers off of the Nvidia website and I've overclocked to settings just under the ones in the official thread (I want to start low, and work my way up to make sure it doesn't start to overheat.)

    1. I installed the Dox drivers but went back to the official Nvidia ones. I didn't run any tests with modified drivers. Should I go back to the 181.20 drivers and see which ones run better? Uninstalling and reinstalling drivers makes me feel like I'm screwing up my new laptop.

    2. Is there any software that I should get to help increase performance? Right now I only have CCleaner installed.

Sorry if these are obvious questions. But I really like this laptop and I hate to screw it up. Every time I install or uninstall something I feel like I'm hurting it lol

Anybody tried running Windows 7 using virtual machines like VMWare or Virtual box on this ? I'd like to try Windows 7 on this with Windows Vista as the Host O/S. Any idea about issues that could arise ? I dont want to install Win 7 as its still in the beta stages and can only run it till August. Also i'd love trying Linux using VM as i'm no expert in that.

thanks semigamer, ill give it a go. and thats weird about your losing hard drive space. I would just go to disk cleanup and see if its somewhere in there. Also any idea why I get a score of 8870 on 3Dmark without overclocking and some people without overclocking get a score over 9000?

    1) Only use the Dox if your a gamer, thats what they're for. And they wont hurt your computer at all :)

    2) I'm using CCleaner, O&O Defrag, Auslogics Boostspeed. To keep my computer clean and defragged.

Anytime. I was told that Vista has a feature that basically uses a certain percent of your HDD space after awhile reserving it for System Restores, or something like that. Oh well. :) I think I get around 8800 without overclock and 9400-9500 with it overclocked so don't worry about it as long as it runs your games :)

Would backing up the files to my external hd be the same as a dvd?
You mean make a back up of installers for the apps and drivers right?

I think it'd be way to hard to put it all on an external HDD since all the files are on a hidden 10GB partition.

Only way non-professionals like ourselves can copy those files is through the Gateway Recovery Manager and burn the DVDs.
Though I've never tried, it MIGHT be possible to burn the DVDs, view the files on the DVDs, copy and paste them onto the external HDD.
Though I don't see the point in that if you have to burn the DVDs anyway.
Also why not just burn the DVDs and get it over with? Why mess with external HDD and everything else? :p

Sorry i'm a little confused about how this works....So when i make the DVDs i can put apps into there too? And that means when i use the DVD for a system restore it will only install the apps i put on it?

The size of our harddrives are technically 298GB, but we only have 288GB available for use. Reason being, theres a HIDDEN partition or "Section" of the harddrive that we can't view the contents of. But the contents are the recovery files.
Everything that was on the computer when you first got it, is what is in that partition, so when you burn the discs, it'll automatically burn EVERYTHING that was on the computer from factory, including the bloatware. So if anything ever happens to your system, you just boot off of those discs, and it'll install everything off those discs, making the notebook be Factory Default again. Thats what the "Factory Default" discs are for.
Now if one of your drivers go bad, say, one of the drivers that vista needs to run off of, when you burn the "Apps and drivers" disc, you would use that one and it would install the missing driver from that disc. Fixing.. well Recovering your notebook.
You cannot put your own apps on the discs, it will put the apps and drivers that was on the notebook when the gateway tech's put the recovery partition on the system.

    Hope you understand that..

Performance for framerates and possible graphical hiccups.
Balanced for the right amount of performance and the right amount of graphical balance.
Quality for the least framerates but the best reliability.

    Balanced :)
But I'm not a Frames Per Second enthusiast, I don't even monitor/check my FPS in games. What ever looks good to my eye is what I like, I don't care if I'm getting 15FPS or 150FPS, as long as its clean to my eye. :)

I play Vega Strike and also use RealFlight G4.5. I have now on both set Vsynch on as the display is 60Hz and I get 59.5 FPS in each. This seems to lower the stress significantly on the GPU and thereby system heat. Both have aa etc enabled and was getting like 200 FPS or better with vsynch off.

Sure I'd like to have 200 FPS but if the display can't show it who really cares..........

Well.. due to a drop and cracking of my beloved hp9500,.. picked up a 7805u @ BB today. Only the 1440x900 display but,.. with the full 3 year black tie warrantee,.. and a 5% off for military... it was about 1500.
Nice to know that if I drop this one,.. I can get a new one. :)

If I get all gung-ho again,.. I'll replace the lcd with the 1900x1200 model... as I also plan to replace the cpu,.. and everything else I can on these. :)

Went to two BB stores here on Long Island. One didn't have the 7805u on display. The other had a 1900x1200 AUO on display and two 1440x900s in stock. Unsurprisingly, the BB salesguy, who claimed to be their Gateway expert, was um . . . uninformed.

Told him I'd buy the machine if it were exactly like the one on display. He assured me that the stock items were. Told him that they might not be and that I didn't want to pay a restocking fee. He had a Geek boot the stock laptop only to discover the lower resolution.

At that point a manager got involved. I politely told the manager that it didn't look good to have a better machine on display than those actually in stock. He agreed and offered to sell me the display at the same price. He said it would take about an hour to remove BB's demo software.

I came back two hours later, picked up the machine, spoke with a different manager, negotiated a display discount and acquired the laptop for $1,050 plus tax.

Question, dont know how many out there is playing alot of games on the Gateway, but, I have been having some trouble with Warhammer online. All my updates are good, the drivers are the newest I could find from Nvidia. Plus i just did a clean install thinking it was something left over from a registry error I had. So clean windows install from recovery disc, and fresh install of the game.

Ok now to the problem, when I'm playing the game at high or balanced reso ( have not tried any lower) my machine will play well for several hours. Then i will start seeing glitches in the video, ex. would be small spots cross the screen, long lines of colors. At first I thought it was heat, so got a Laptop cooler and to no avail. So... kinda lost now.

    Any help most appreciated. :D

I have had the same issue with WAR Online. I contacted Gateway customer service and they said it should play with no hang ups as long as your network is fine. I told them my network is fine since it's wired and I run it on my custom built system just fine with no lag or hang ups. I have run OCCT for GPU and CPU stability and they are both fine. On 100% on both CPU cores I see 55-60° C for the GPU after 15 min @ 100% saw 90° C temps. I know that the video cards will run in the 90's and the CPU is fine with the load and temps I saw. If there continues to be an issue I will try to Return to bestbuy and possibly get a new one with 1920x1200 screen. If it will play crisis with med-high settings it should play war hammer just fine. I did not overclock CPU or GPU. FPS in warhammer is about 25-60 average depending on how many people are in area, high pop area is about 10-15 FPS

    hi,
im thinking of buying the fx from best buy:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9172511&type=product&id=1218043606827

the only laptop they have in stock is 1366x768, so it sucks, but i HAVE to see it on the spot and buy it instead of ordering it online.
i hate dealing with dead pixels or bleeding screens.

    my question is,

i dont mind the resolution itself, but do many games support this resolution?
i want to always play games in native resolutions.
i hate playing games with resolutions that distort the game images.

The best buy spec is wrong, its WSXGA 1440x900. Gateway has the resolution correct but the name of that resolution wrong (WXGA+):
    http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668231.php

Any newer game will play on just about any resolution you can get a monitor/laptop in.

I did find one thing that seems to help, for any WAR players out there. In the options under advanced graphics there is a slider bar. Even on High Graphics it is set to default. This bar tells the game how much Video ram to use, at the lowest setting default it keeps ram stored away for other things in the background. I assume this is for pc's with intergrated cards. However I slid the bar to the max, it makes the game run smoother and has a faster response time. So far I have not had any more problems but it has only been a day.
Note: my friend with his Dell studio, could not change this option, so I think it is made for those with Vram to spare.

A week ago I bought the P-7805U for $350 new, with a 3 year accidental warranty with Best Buy. My last laptop was a 3 year old Gateway, that Best Buy couldn't repair so they gave me this one as a replacement. Not a bad deal at all. I didn't even know how good the laptop was, I just quickly looked at the specs and went home. But, that wasn't a problem.

The past few days I've been messing around with overclocking, drivers, and all those wonderful things. After a week of experimenting, I got my 3DMark06 score up to 9616, with some minor overclocking. After I purchase a cooler I'll bump it up even more, but I wouldn't want to fry my new laptop. Right now it's running at round 69 degrees, which from what I've read is normal.

Everything runs great on this laptop, which was a surprise since in the past my luck has been bad with gaming and laptops. But, this one works amazing and I'm happy with my decision.

Just thought I was post this to thank all the helpful people on this forum :)

Congrats man, glad to hear it. Thats a greatt deal!
Question though, what drivers and overclocking numbers are you using and what else did you do to raise the 3D mark score?
Most I can squeeze out of it is 9500 3Dmark06 points with Dox 181.22 drivers, 715/965/1775 clocks. ;p

To be honest - I got the drivers from one of your posts when I was looking for other versions to try. But, I also have the lower res screen. I guess I can't complain for $350, right?
Dox 181.22 Performance drivers, 655/899/1750. Your clocked higher, so I don't get why you would be getting a lower score. I wanted to be safe with mine, before I get a cooler. Each laptop is a little different, and the res affects a lot too.
I'm not the most experienced at this (I'm only 14, and I just started reading into these kinds of things) but heres what I got from the tests I did today.

    9349 w/ 181.22 and default clocks - 9616 w/ 181.22 OCed with the settings above - 9368 w/ 182.05 and default clocks - 9573 w/ 182.05 and settings above

Heck yeah thats not bad for $350 :p what was your old model?
Thats cool, I give you rep for being one of the first on here that actually read through all the guides myself and others have posted instead of just barging in here and asking "HOW DO I CHANGE MY DRIVERS?!?!" when it can be easily found on this forum :p

Those are great scores :) Mines probably just low because of my firewalls/antispywares/virus protections running :p Congrats though :)

My old model was the MX7525. It was kind of like the FX of 2006, plus cracking hinges and flickering screens. You would have to adjust the screen to get it to stop and even then it would flicker. All that's in the past though

All I'm running is McAfee Anti-Virus, and I turn off the firewall and active proection stuff while I'm playing. The only reason it's there in the first place is because of my 2 younger brothers who play World of Warcraft from time to time.

Yeah I'd say thats a good deal than, you said you got the 3yr warranty with the new one? Thats $300 itself :)

Yeah I have AVG 8.0 pro and yadda yadda :p Make sure if you play online with like L4D or CoD4 and any other online game you have some kind or protection up because they can send stuff over that sort of internet use as well.

It was a really good deal. Because of their no lemon policy, only $50 came out of my own pocket. Now I have my Gateway for staying at home, and my Macbook for when I travel.

I haven't been playing a lot of games. I've spent so much time focusing on getting higher scores that I haven't even gotten to enjoy it yet. I'm going to buy a new mouse sometime this week and this weekend I can start. 2 weeks of testing isn't fun
