The only other Windows computer I have in the house is an HP from Wal-Mart.... yeah... I'm keeping the FX![]()
I do this with a lot of things though. I wanted to make it the best it could be, so I didn't have to worry about it later. Amazon has a Logitech G5 for $45 with free shipping so I'm looking at that. Best Buy's prices are horrible. $65 for the same mouse.
-
Haha yeah the FX is an amazing laptop for the price
Yeah I understand whatcha mean. I don't recommend overclocking during gaming though until you actually need it.
I've got the G5 and I love it. Make sure you get the V2 though (The blue one, not the silver G5) its the newer version of it (V2 = version 2). -
I have both versions of the G5, they work exactly the same, the newer version is blue, and has a extra thumb button, so you can go back and forth on web pages. The G5 is a awesome mouse for gaming. I just picked up a Microsoft Arc mouse, and it is a really cool laptop mouse, it folds up, the usb dongle is small and hides inside the mouse for storing, its made to store in your backpack, while unfolding to a full size mouse when you need it, it feels great in your hand too.
check it out;
$39.99 free shipping too
Black (the one I have, it has that kinda cool rubbery feel too it)

Yeah I've never used the old version, just suggest the newer one for obvious reasons (Its newer and remade a little bit haha).
Dude that looks pretty cool. May get myself the black one

I just ordered a second one, my wife took mine, lol

The sales guy at Best Buy said that he bought one of these laptops, and that it was the 1440x900 version, but that it was the same hardware, so he was able to upgrade to the 1900x1200 resolution by installing different drivers. I bought the laptop based on this input, but can't find anything online referencing this ability. Did I miss reading something, or is the physical monitor different and the sales guy mistaken?
Thanks. -
Wow... Thats either the funniest or stupidest thing I've heard of for him to say.
The screens are completely different and theres no such thing as a driver creating more pixels for your screen, since thats what it'd have to do to make it a 1920x1200 resolution screen.
Go back, smack the rep in the face and than decide if you want to keep the 1440x900 or not
-
Yea I agree with SemiGamer. In fact when i bought mind it had the 1440x900 and the floor model had the 1920x1200 and BB tech serive tried installing new drivers to fix the problem no matter how many times I told them they are different screens in the end I got the floor model and $80 off of the price because it was the floor model. I had to have the 1920x1200 couldnt settle for the 1440x900
-
Installing wrong drivers might mislead you in thinking that ur display can support higher resolution. it might show higher resolution options. But can never provide higher resolution if the display is of lower resolution. Doing that makes the display unstable. never use drivers not meant for ur screen. You never get a better resolution than what ur display is capable of.
-
Sadly, you are not alone. I brought in my 1440x900 to swap for another one, (ended up getting a floor model)... but 2 of the Geek Squad tech support both told me, yea... its a driver issue for the lower resolution. Sure, let's update the firmware of a 3 megapixel camera to let it shoot 20 megapixels. (dunno if that was a good analogy)
I was so pissed, yet had to play dumb and nice because I was 1 day passed the return, exchange date. -
nice job yellojello about exhanging it.
-
I use my laptop 80% work use so the real estate is definately required. One thing that I got sad about was that I forgot to take the dummy SD card from the exchange (the floor model was missing) and didn't know until I got home. I went back a few weeks later, and it was still in place ready to go into my pocket.
-
What about your dummy Expresscard ?
-
Anyone know where to get the newest drivers for these notebooks besides from Gateway...they are always running behind. Where can I get the sound drivers? Mine are stalk.
As well anyone know where to get an upgraded in the CPU department? What is the best CPU that can be put in there? And how do you swap them out? -
i like 1440x900 over the 1920x1200.
am i abnormal? -
yes....no, it just depends on the person
-
I'm reporting you to a psycho facility.
Lol just kidding. -
there ARE advantages in 1440x900 over 1920x1200!!!
pros:
1. everything's bigger and is easy to read
3. better performance in games!!!!!! <---this one!
7805u WXGA users UNITE!! -
Those only apply to those without good eyesight and for games that you can't max out at 1920x1200.
-
dumb question about the 7805. I have someone selling the laptop on a listing, his listing said WXGA 1920x1200, doesn't make sense right? So I asked him is it WXGA or WUXGA, he replies to me that its WXGA, and then he sends me a picture of his resolution settings and it says 1920x1200 :|
So clearly this guy doesn't know the difference between WXGA and WUXGA right? good for me the buyer then.
But just to clarify....WXGA cannot display 1920x1200 right? I'm not sure how it all works, but I was thinking maybe 1400x900 is it's native res, but you can bump it to 1920x1200 if you wanted....
That doesn;t make much sense now that I think about it...but Im going to post it anyways. -
u can't bump it to 1920x1200 if its a lower rez.
there was a lot of confusion about the 7805 initially. the box says wxga (1440x900), but the people who bought it when it first came out, did get a wuxga (1920x1200) screen for some reason. speculation was gateway getting rid of inventory. but later models reverted back to what it said on the box, wxga. one can still track down the wuxga 7805's by a serial no. (here we go again).
i'd be a little careful of the listing though. -
I'd grab it.
The guy thinks its WXGA because of the box, it is actually WUXGA+ but he must not be computer savvy and doesn't know that he has.
Goodluck. -
ok, thats what I suspected. Thanks for the help gentlemen.
-
between using the battery and the AC Power, does the system actually overclock itself to perform better in games?
i was playing FEAR2 on battery for the first time, and it was SO laggy.
when i plugged it in, it was running smooth again.
any way to perform well even on battery mode? -
Yes, it's possible. You have to:
1. Go to power options.
2. Click on Plan Settings.
3. Go to Advanced Settings.
4. Click on the + next to Processor Power Management.
5. Change the minimum state for the battery to 100%. Do the same for the maximum.
6. Apply and enjoy. Your going to have poor battery life, but you should have already known that. -
When on the battery it down clocks the GPU.
-
thanks,
+rep -
Was about to post the same.
The CPU management in the power options isn't really going to fix it fully. Sure it'll make it run a little better because the CPU is bumped back up, but the GPU is downclocking as well which is obvious that it wont run as well as on AC power. -
Just for curiousity can that be changed where it runs on full? Or would that have to be a bios update?
-
so on battery, i can only boost the CPU?
-
I probably should I have been more clear. Anything helps though, I guess.
I just got done playing Warhammer on this and wow... it runs amazing at ultra settings. I didn't measure the FPS, but it really doesn't matter to me. I didn't feel like downloading fraps, and if it looks great, why bother? I also picked up Logitech MX 518 from Best Buy and it feels great, works well, and was well worth the money.
I'm not going to upgrade anything internally, because it runs great as it is. And to be honest, even though I got this laptop cheap I just don't have the money to go and upgrade the CPU. And I have this phobia of doing upgrading since as a kid I tinkered around with a lot of things but was never good at putting them back together... haha -
Its a thing called Powermizer. I believe the only way that a basic user knows how to do would be install OLD drivers that didn't have the Powermizer feature in it, though the old drivers would probably suck anyway. So I'm not to sure. Do some research on disabling Powermizer and there's probably a way. I've just never looked into it because I don't game on battery
Same above applies to you too I guess.
Yep I don't monitor FPS either, nor do I see a reason to upgrade my CPU yet
-
I dont game on battery either, I mean what would you get? Like an hour? lol
-
Actually, when I was gaming on my Everex XT5000T I used RMClock to deal with overheating/multiplier locking. It worked well for the CPU and I imagine a similar tool should exist or is built into Nvidia tools. Am I wrong ?
I tried gaming on battery and the results were poor on standard settings so I just plug in when I need to. The battery life would have been ca. 1 hour anyway !
DK -
Exactly, than you don't even see the warning pop-up and it just dies out of nowhere and you're like "what the heck?" when your game minimizes and than our computer shuts off
-
I apologize I haven't read all the pages before posting. I hit 60 something and the 3D mark tests kept frying me. When I see those it makes me rethink spending the money on the W90. So what I really need to know that I didn't see in the first 60'ish pages in how this thing runs WoW. Not questing, but under the games heaviest loads. Raiding, Dalaran, BUSY Wintergrasp, etc.
Again sorry if I missed it but as always, I appreciate the help! -
me010698
At max settings and 1920x1200 res I get an ave of 38-45 fps in Dalaran during peak hours (Spikes in the low 20's ever once in a while). In 25man Naxx I was at 50+ fps almost the whole time, Only time I saw a drop was during sapp when I was ice blocked it dropped to 23-26 fps for a sec or 2. And if you find it is lagging you can just drop the shadows down, If I lower all the way I don't get under 60 fps anywhere. -
What you're referencing is with shadows all the way up at 1920x1200??? If so I'm sold!
-
Also can someone suggest a good SSD to go in the second drive slot here?
-
If anyone here was thinking about undervolting so their laptop runs a few degrees cooler...
Do it. The CPU ran 10C cooler after undervolting, and the whole process is simple. You can't ruin anything, and the only problem that you might experience is BSoD which just means you undervolted too low. The only reason I uninstalled the program is because at startup it always asked me if I wanted to run it, and with 2 brothers using this I want to make it as easy as possible. If you guys have brothers or even kids.... you know simple stuff like that can confuse them. -
Hi guys, new here, been reading the threads for a while though.
Wonder if you guys have some insight on a situation. I bought this laptop at Best Buy about 5 days ago, got a 1440x900 screen (, display one was a high res.) Anyway, thing is when i boot or come out of hibernation i get a weird "snow" on the screen, looks like static or something. It goes away in a few seconds and is only at the beginning, but it worries me a little.
It goes away so fast i haven't been able to get a screen shot. I have not overclocked. Downloaded RTHDRIBLE to stress the card, got to 70C according to HWmonitor but performed great and no problem. Problem does not appear even after hours of use.Don't know what can cause the "static". Any ideas? -
Did you upgrade all your Vista and video driver files?
Some older video drivers have a sleep and hibernation problem when waking up. -
All right guys and gals.... I need the scoop here. I have had issues with Gateway before so I was really sceptical when I went to BestBuy and this was the best system for the price. I hadn't looked at any forums or anything before I went in.....
The system they had on display there was a 1920x1200 resolution and paired with the 1 gig video card and 4 gigs of ram, I was sold.
Now....I come home, start looking over the forums on this system and find there's a discrepancy between the screens? Is this just an issue with the video card and not setting the screen resolution thru the driver software or are the screens really just 1440x900? Where do they high definition screen if this is the case? 1440x900 is not high def. What the heck do I do if I get this system and the screen is really a 1440x900? That's not what I was told I was buying. -
Technically, 720P is Hi Def. If you get one of the 1440x900 and the display model is 1920x1200 you can use that to either return yours or try to buy the display model. That is what others have done anyway.
-
720p is not high def. It is advanced definition. I have a plasma display at 720p. Advanced definition. 1080i is high definition and 1080p is advanced high definition. There is such a huge difference it's insane! I was told I was getting the same exact thing as what was on display and I checked, as did the Customer Service Rep I dealt with and talked to this morning about it. He is upset as am I. This is not cool.
-
Call it whatever you like but 720P is considered high definition.
Answering your other questions, this model was supposed to only have 1440x900 as specd by Gateway. All print material says this whether on the box or on the web. Many came with 1920x1200 and were not marked any differently so a lot of us got a bonus and many were and still are used as display models. There have been threads discussing how to tell from the outside of the box which screen the notebook may have by using the lot number or serial number. If the native res is 1440x900 it will never be nothing more, drivers will not ever make it anything more.
There have been many theories as to why Gateway did this from a manufacturing mistake to trying to clear out inventory of 1920x1200 screens or conspiring to increase sales. -
I don't know when that happened. Likely cable..... anyway.....
Since I have burned by Gateway before, I figure it's likely a ploy on their part since their display model at the Best Buy here is, in fact, a 1920x1200. I assumed I was getting what was on the model and to be honest..... the sticker that was there (this was also checked again, this morning, by the man who originally helped me with the purchase) states that the display is a 1920x1200 high definition. One of the only reasons I decided to give Gateway another chance as that display rocks. I have already told him if I get this machine and it has the 1440x900 I will be bringing it back in and someone is going to take care of it. Whether I end up with their display model, I am getting what I paid for or a refund. I don't like being duped and that's exactly what I feel just happened. Remind me to never again purchase a system before checking out the forums. I am really ticked off. -
I just bought mine and it has the 1440x900 screen and IMO it looks great, good all around res. 1920x1200 is a little high to be playing games on since the GPU will limp.
Another thing, "HD" doesn't matter when it comes to computer screens since there really is no "HD" screens, TV's on the other hand are different. -
720p 1080i 1080p HD... I thought that it doesn't really make a difference unless your screen size is large and you would be able to see the pixels... i.e. 42" to 60" screens. I think 17" screens you could hardly tell the difference.
I think this is getting off topic now. ANyways...
