No, the drivers at gateway appear older than the ones i have. I heard that you can use drivers at NVIDIA on notebooks now, so i'll download the newest ones and try.

It happened again and this time my computer froze, i had to reset, do you think i'll have to return it?

Download the latest NVIDIA drivers from their website and see if the problem still persists. That's the best place to start. BUT, before you upgrade your drivers you need to uninstall the drivers you are currently using. You can find a pretty straight-forward guide here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=18820

After uninstalling the old drivers, reboot and install the new ones. Installing over old drivers can cause more problems then fix them. After you're all done installing if your computer is still freezing then bring it to Best Buy

I'm just going to add one last thing:

When you reboot into Windows after running the driver cleaner program you should just run the .exe that you got from the NVIDIA website. The "have-disk" method is only for the drivers from laptopvideo2go.com

You know..... when it all comes down to it, the real reason I'm pissed is because I paid for something I'm unlikely to get because of misrepresentation. That's pretty much it in a nutshell.

Go to your bestbuy and hassle them, tell them they're false advertising by having a 1920x1200 screen on display and telling people thats what they're getting and then they get 1440x900. Demand you want the display model or you want them to check all of their in stock models that're in boxes for a 1920x1200 screen. And when they say they can't open them tell them you don't care you want what you were told by them that you were getting and thats final. And if all fails just get a refund (There isn't a restocking fee anymore)

    Yeah, what SemiGamer said!

    Seriously.

It is not right that they have a 1920 on demo and then sell you a 1440 notebook.

Does "bait and switch" sound familiar?

(Although, to be fair, I doubt that the Best Buy folks are doing this deliberately. They've just gotten caught up in the Gateway confusion.)

I called them this morning after reading this forum, checking the Gateway site for system specs and checking Best Buy's website. I talked to the same man who helped me order this thru the website right there at BB (they supposedly didn't have any in available even though I saw him type in the SKU and it said there were 2 so I had to buy it online). He went to the display and came back to tell me I was right and that when it comes in to check it out and bring it in to them if it isn't what they have on the display. He was really upset. The thing is.... I'm absolutely positive this can't be the first time they have heard of this issue. I mean, hello.... are there that many folks out there who have bought systems and not checked to make sure they got what they paid for? It's the FIRST thing I do besides making sure everything is working properly.

I suspect that a lot of folks see the system on display, read the specs that say 1440 x 900, and don't bother to further check the display unit to see the screen is 1920 x 1200.

Edit to add - those of us that do check this end up getting a real good deal, though.

I thought I'd tell my tale here. I got the 1920 x 1200 res screen after arguing with the floor manager for an hour. He said he wouldn't open any boxes to check for the better screen so I told him that because I know they are doing a bait and switch and they are gonna sell the floor model at 15% off anyways when they are "allowed to" (when the stock runs out), ill buy it now for the ticket price (which is dirt cheap anyways for what u get) and he finally said ok. So if they have a 1920 1200 on display point it out to them that they are doing a bait and switch and that you wanna buy that one or you can make their lives miserable by sending evidence (a picture) to corporate HQ. Or make the case that they will sell it for 15% off later anyays, or if you are to buy a 1440 res screen, the restocking fee and the percent off are both 15% anyways so you might as well sell the floor model. The have to remove the garbage they put on the floor models but its worth it. 1 yr warranty with gateway to.o

I had specific requirements when I went in. 1) It had to have a minimum of a 2.2g duo core cpu, 512mb dedicated graphics and 4 gigs of ram in it. The resolution and hard drive were secondary, to be honest, because I am only using that one as a trip system. When the guy at BB showed me the systems he had with dedicated memory, the first thing I did was go into the system settings to find out what the screen resolution was. When I saw the 1920x1200, in comparison to the 1368x768 and 1280x800, with the 1gig of dedicated memory I was thrilled and actually got excited about the purchase. Now I'm just pissed. I shouldn't have to go thru all of this BS to get what I paid for.

which is why a bait and switch is illegal, if you are willing you could sue them (with evidence which is why I mention the picture) but most people don't want the hassle, the only thing I suffered is a busted space bar which I can send in to fix If I really want or just keep fiddling with it.

I haven't received the system yet but once it gets here, I am going straight to Best Buy, without even opening it, and they are going to do it themselves. If it isn't what I was told I was paying for they are going to do something about it. Whether is be a refund of some of my cash, an extended warranty for free, something. It's not like I'm going to find another laptop out there with a 1 gig dedicated video card in it for that price and you know what? They likely know that and figure people will just settle. It's about honor here!! I have never had an issue with anything I have purchased from them in the past but I can guarantee that from now on I will crawling through the forums with a microscope before I purchase anything else from them. What a crock!!!

And.....don't even get me started on Gateway..... the very first system I ever purchased, WAY back in '97 was from them and I spent more time fixing the thing than I ever did using it. I learned so much from that computer it's insane! Even how to build a system from scratch because I ended up gutting the thing, using the case and a few minor components to build myself a decent machine. I have steered people away from Gateway ever since and now this.... give them a second chance and what do I get for it.....

Best Buy is not advertising the high res screen, its not posted any where, legaly you have no grounds. If anything they would just try to help you to get you out of the store happy. If the display model has a different screen, its beyond best buys control, its Gateway who shipped it to them, if anything it is looked at as a upgraded mistake. Its not honor that your talking about, they are not intentionally trying to trick people.

That's what I did the first time (luckily) I came prepared with evidence that other people have gotten the better screen and how they obtained it. I asked about buying a new one and if it wasn't the higher res could I return it cause I know the display has the better screen and they said no but they give me some 40 dollar coverage to look at the computer after I buy it and once they have seen themselves that it's diff than what's on display and then change it...

Well Best Buy is, they are well aware of the high res screens and put those on display, they look for em, then when u buy, ur #$%ed. Best Buy (kind of ironic)

You're right. It's not posted on their website but I WAS in the store when I purchased online, with the help of a Best Buy customer service representative, I might add, and who's name I won't mention.... I was assured that what I was purchasing was the EXACT same machine. I don't care who made the mistake. It was made and it's going to be corrected one way or the other. As a merchant, it is both Best Buy and Gateway who are responsible. Gateway for bait and switch and Best Buy for not checking their products before putting them on display. You have to admit that I was wronged and it should be made right. Period.

    Its really a hard situation.
Everyone should be happy bestbuy puts the 1920x1200's on display or else nobody would have the right to get them if they got 1440x900's.
The only chance people have of getting the 1920x1200's is if the bestbuy has it on display. All over the place for the notebook it is stated 1440x900, you'd sound like an idiot saying "Hey my friend on a forum got lucky by getting a 1920x1200, can we search through all your inventory for a model with 1920x1200 even though your not allowed to open the box AND everywhere on your ad's/website/specs list it shows 1440x900?"
My local bestbuy are complete idiots, literally, the workers don't know the difference between intergraded graphics and dedicated graphics cards. They tell people what they want to hear (E.g 'Yeah sure I don't see why CoD4 wont run on this Intel Accelerator Graphics Card!").
So what makes you think they're going to know crap about different resolutions.
All they know is how to tell the customer that they're getting "Whats displayed". While in reality Gateway screwed (Or helped, however you look at it) Bestbuy by giving them two different model screens. And Bestbuy is screwing people by not checking out what they're selling.
Now that they don't have a restocking fee anymore, I don't see why they can't open them in store for you. But besides the point.
Just seems everyone nowadays wants what everyone else got, but also gotta look at it as, We all got ours for $1,049,99. If people complained that they wanted to get theirs for that price as well they'd sound dumb. So the only people I'm going to help on this is the people that looked at the display model, saw 1920x1200 and was told thats what they're going to get. Because THAN you have been wronged.

For the people that bought these systems KNOWING they were getting 1440x900 from the specs they read and ETC, I don't see how they have a right to come on here and say "o, u guys got 1920x1200? I WANT DAT NOW 2! BESTBUY SCREWED ME DIDN'T DEY?!? how do i getta 1920x1200 screen now even thou dey dont have 1 on display?!?!". Simple answer is, No, they didn't. You knew you were getting that. And if you go in there demanding a 1920x1200 because "someone else got one and you didn't" even though you knew you weren't getting one and they didn't tell you that you were going to get a 1920x1200. How do you possibly have a right to scream at the bestbuy employees for one?
Just be happy with the amazing systems no regardless of the resolution.
Though as I stated earlier and I'll say it again so people don't read this wrong.
Whoever got told they were getting 1920x1200 because the display model they had was that resolution and than got 1440x900. In my eyes you have the right to go there and throw a fit. :)

You said it so perfectly. Anyone reading this post knows the odds of getting a "better" res screen and should not be shocked in getting the standard advertised screen. The display models are probably the higher res because they where the first ones put out in the store, once again, not intentional, not bait and switch, Best Buy and Gateway are not telling you you will get the higher res screen.

A fit is exactly what I'm going to throw. I gave Gateway a second chance after they screwed me a long time ago and this is what I got for it. So....once again, I will say.... when the system gets here tomorrow (which is what the tracking info just told me) I'm getting in my car and going straight to Best Buy with the package unopened. They are going to pull it out, check it out and if it's not what they told me it was and what I saw there (1920x1200 res), they are going to have to make it right. And btw..... all of you who paid $1049.99 for your systems made out. I paid $1298.83 for mine with shipping.

Hey! I was told this system was a 1920x1200 res, not 1440x900 so I do have a right to be upset. I don't care what is advertised everywhere else! I didn't look at the specifications online before I purchased it there, which is my bad, but I was assured that the machine with the same SKU was the same machine as in the store. When you're in a store and the system is there and you check the resolution on it and are told you are getting that, that is what you expect not something else so don't act like I have no reason to be mad.

Thanks, good to know I'm not the only one getting tired of all the posts saying they want one like us even though they had no clue about the screen and knew they were getting 1440x900. :p
And yep, I bought the display model at my local bestbuy, but, it was before they were released, so it was still in the back, it was the only one they had in stock and the employee didn't realize it was suppose to be their display model. And sold it to me without any questions or checking anything about it out (Why it wasn't on display yet, etc). Guessing because I went in when they were busy as heck they didn't have the time to :p So yeah, the display models are all from the first shipment they got (Or 2nd shipment for the places that got their first shipment bought out by people like us that already knew about it before it was released).

Yeah, I support you completely. Hope you get the 1920x1200 though so you don't have to go through much hassle, though I doubt you will since your getting it shipped its bound to be a newer one, aka 1440x900 :\ Best of luck.

I hope you get the better res screen, I understand what your saying, I am sure if you start out being cool about it, they will work with you. What I said earler was to point out that they only need to go by what is advertised, in print when you are talking about bait and switch. Good luck :)

P.S. The Best Buy where I live still has the higher res screens, so you may have a shot

Personally, I think that Gateway should just put the 1920x1200 in all of them and get on with it instead of people getting screwed like this. If I had checked the advertising instead of just walking in there, this would be a non-issue. Since I didn't and went in on a whim.... well yeah....

and all because I have to babysit an 18 year old niece, who can't seem to stay out of trouble or be left home alone, for a week and don't want to haul my Alienware system over to their place to do it....

I guess we'll see what we see tomorrow. eh? I'll let everyone know how it turns out. Hopefully I'll be one of the lucky ones that gets what I paid for and not have to go thru all of the BS to get it taken care of.

Yes, it's a desktop and I'm telling you.... it's a beast of a machine. hehe The tower is massive but it just laughs at anything I throw its way. I have tried and tried to lock this thing up and only once did I achieve my goal. Of course I paid out the nose for it but it's worth every penny I spent on it. I just don't want to haul it everywhere I go. hehe

Are you speaking as a gaming machine or an all around one as also for working with images and video/movie making?

    Thanks!

    You just made my day!

I have been searching & searching for a laptop of my liking to serve for me and think this may be it.
Was thinking "Toshiba" for the longest time but found out how you people rave about this one so I will get my wheels a rollen.

I wonder if it is going to come down in price ever? Just incase a matter of waiting a little longer as I have to.

I played very little game since I do not have the time. But this gateway is very stable, excellent video and audio, and the components were 1rst class. I chose this over the HP and Dell 17" and others and have not regretted it since.

    I know nothing about price.

    :)

Instead of using a whole new thread to ask this question I will ask it here. I currently play these games : Empire Total War, Tom Clancy's HAWX & End War, Company of Heroes, Medieval Total War, Fall Out 3, Call of Duty 4 & World at War and I was wondering how do you know which games are compatabile with the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows. I know the RTS games like the Total War games are not designed for controllers but some games like Call of Duty and HAWX which come out on multi-platforms are perfect for this kind of thing.

    Note
While reading the Best Buy reviews I read it doesnt work with 64bit systems :( is that true?

Yeah I was searching for awhile and even had saved up enough to buy a Sager for $1600 but than this machine came along that had the same components as the Sager, and I jumped on this, why not pocket $500 right? :D
As for the price, most I can say is don't buy until you absolutely need it.
They don't announce price drops so just keep checking on it now and then to see if it gets a price drop until you need it and have no choice but to buy it at the price its at :)

Just went back to Gateway after a disappointing run of Sager's and a Dell. I had a P-7811 for a while but it had some bugs. Just went and picked up a P-7805u at BB to trade for my Dell Studio XPS 13. I was lucky and got a build from December with the 1920 x 1200 screen, whooo!! Hard drive swap to my WD Scorpio Black and a Windows 7 (build 7057) and I will SOOOOO happy! Deciding whether or not RAID is really worth it..it's almost too cheap to pass up..

I went ahead with a RAID 0. A Scorpio Black Hard Drive 320GB 7200 RPM is around $130 at BB. I got it when it was on sale for $100 =) More space, twice the fun :p

Not a problem bro, let us know if you buy one :)

Whoa, thanks, I expected more out of Windows 7. Guess we'll just have to wait and see if the finished product is any better than the beta..

I use the wireless receiver and play with my 360 controller just fine. Trackmnia Nations Forever - free, clean frame rate, players all around the world.
    Epic win.
(Note I also use a notebook cooler, Zalman NC2000, if that makes any difference)
Also Crysis auto-recognizes the controller so its almost like playin a console on ur pc, if u hook in the hdmi to a tv, then u pretty much are. :) god I love this laptop.
I also have a 1TB driveconnected through the esata port, so my xbox can already recognize the computer and shared drives/folders and will therefore read the 1TB drive attached. I have Entourage Oz Breaking Bad Mad Men Fire Fly in avi's so i can watch right to my TV :-D

As I said the only possible things I can complain about are not being able to run Crysis on its highest settings, and the space bar issue i have which at the moment seems to be fixed.

    Husky any luck with ubuntu?
