If anyone here plays UT3, what do you get for FPS? At max settings, 1440x900, I get about 60fps while in areas by myself. But, this drops to around 35-40 when I start getting into gunfights with others around. Is this normal for this laptop? I couldn't use the Dox 181.22 drivers after they started heating up my GPU to 80C, so I'm trying out the 182.05 right now.

You already have a suggestion for that problem in the other thread you started, h e r e, greent4.

Let us know - in that thread - whether that helped or not, OK?

I do not believe that we have isolated a batch with bad screens.

I know mine wasn't very bright and appeared washed out when I first turned it on. I adjusted some of the Nvidia control panel settings and it looked much better. After a few days of use it looked even better.

I believe a number of us have stated same.

Hopefully, that will be your only problem and I see it is being addressed in the other thread.

Hey now, I resemble that remark. Competitive benchmarking can be a ton of fun, as nerdy as it may sound. On the other hand, this laptop isn't really a benchmarking beast anyways since you can't touch anything but the GPU.

Q: Is there anyone who has maxed out performance and quality? I'm trying to push it to the max with a combination of good drivers (nvidia not Dox) and overclocking, I have read the guides and it all makes sense, I have 3Dmarks the HWmonitor, the nvidia control programs etc. I have a notebook cooler too. For example to play Crysis on its highest settings with 1920 x 1200 res. I have Vista x64 home premium. I've seen 3Dmarks as high as 10K but does that translate to good framerate? I need an expert to weigh-in on this.

Q: Also, does this laptop not come with a WD Scorpio 320GB 7200 RPM HD anyways. I see some ppl have 2? Is there space to add another or larger one like a 1TB? If any of this is possible, will it void the warranty? Also what is RAID 0 and what difference does it make?

Q: Sorry one last one, I haven't created a back-up disc yet. Is it easy, has anyone had problems when they had to re-install, is there a way to get a vista disc from gateway?

Trying to gather as much info as possible without 3 diff threads. Any help is appreciated

Drivers that may be great for benchmarks may not be great for games. If gaming is your intention, use games as your benchmarks. Record FPS in the games you play as you make changes.

    1. dox with quality maximized and the gpu overclocked as high as safely possible should give the most performance with the best visual appearance. Generally a higher 3dmark score will net better in game performance, but some people who are hard core about getting a 3dmark score will choose settings that will negatively effect the image quality in games.

    2. yes it has a scorpio 320 7200rpm that you can double up for RAID use, RAID essentially splits the data in half and writes half to either drive, which allows it to write and read faster because they do their halves at the same time. The only thing it won't improve is the seek times of the drives when they go looking for data, it will actually hurt seek times a tiny bit, but overall it will increase performance quite a bit in most cases. If you want more storage they make up to 500 GB drives in notebook size now.

    3. It's easy to make the discs (though sometimes it fails and you have to call gateway, if they can't solve the problem they will send you a disc free generally)

Thank you very much for the help. I have no real reason to change to RAID. (Want to keep one partition incase UBUNTU eventually wants to work on this thing). Do the Dox drivers work on the Nvidia Graphics Card? Do you have your 7805U overclocked? if so what drivers and settings do you have?

Dox Drivers work just like the Nvidia drivers in terms of installing them, and they work fine on the 9800M GTS. In most cases, they work better. But finding out which one is the best for your system can take a little bit of work. It's worth it in the end though.

You can overclock the GPU to crank out a few more FPS, adding little to no extra heat. I use 655/899/1750 settings which allow me to get better performance and higher benchmarks, while keeping my laptop at the same temperature. The same rules as drivers goes for overclocking too. You need to experiment, and find out what suits you and your system.

    I'm using Dox's 182.05 driver

    3DMark06

    Not OC'd=8836
    OC'd (700/950/1800)=9491

    OCing makes ~700 mark difference

Assuming I do go with DOX drivers, is it easy to roll em back in case they dont work? I installed drivers for the cd drive of a POS dell and could never reverse it. I just wanna be extremely careful with this beauty, it was worth the research to get it.

Rolling back drivers is usually not recommended. Installing drivers over each other often causes issues, and it's easier to uninstall them in the first place. Just uninstall the old ones, boot into safe mode, use a driver cleaner to clean any extra files, restart, and install the new drivers. It takes a little while but it's worth it.

What are some good new games where you can be a fighter pilot, like Tom Clancy's HAWX, something that's good. I haven't seen too many of those games around. Although I haven't really ever been into them and kinda getting an itch to play them.

the avg. is what I am getting but people are able to overclock and get a higher score. I dont know about do dox drivers, I think I will stay with offical NVIDIA drivers as there is a new one about one a month or so, even though they are behind in terms of desktops.

The reason a lot of people use the Dox drivers are because in most cases they provide an increase in performance. Also, as stated in his newest released, he intergraded settings from the newest laptop release so that all of the sleep functions of a laptop work, even though they're based off of desktop drivers.

One thing to keep in mind is that benchmarking performance and actual in-game performance are different. One driver might give you a high 3dmark06 score, but lower your fps dramatically. So don't always depend on the 3dmark06 score. It's a good ballpark estimate of where your system is, but that's it.

Can you update me on what you get for fps? I downloaded UT3 and even though my 3dmark06 score is above normal it seems like UT3 just isn't running as well as it should be. It starts off capped at 62fps, but in gunfights it lowers to almost 30fps.

yea i start off capped at 62 fpss that seems very weird.

    o nvm i found a fix:

How do I uncap my FPS? Open UTEngine.ini, and in the section [Engine.GameEngine] set bSmoothFrameRate=False

    located in a folder called My Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UT Game\Config.

    bSmoothFrameRate=True

The game engine is capped to a maximum framerate, as determined by the value of the MaxSmoothedFrameRate variable (see below), which is 62FPS by default. This is done by the developers to prevent FPS spikes and thus provide smoother performance. However, by setting this option to False, you can completely remove this FPS cap. Keep in mind though that if you then find your framerate varying a great deal and causing jerkiness, this option is best set back to True. Uncapping your FPS doesn't increase overall performance as such, i.e. if you got 35 FPS in certain areas with the cap, you'll still do so without the cap.

Update: As of the 1.1 Patch, you can now also adjust this setting using the in-game 'Framerate Smoothing' option found under the Advanced Video Settings.

    MinSmoothedFrameRate=22

    MaxSmoothedFrameRate=62

These settings control the framerate range between which the game engine attempts to smooth frames. As covered under the bSmoothFrameRate setting above, if that setting is set to True, the framerate limit specified by the value of MaxSmoothedFrameRate will be enforced. Although you can disable this FPS cap, ideally if you want smooth FPS but don't want the default 62FPS cap, one thing you can do is to set the MaxSmoothedFrameRate to a higher value, e.g. 85. It's usually best to set your FPS cap to match your Refresh Rate, since even with VSync disabled, any framerates above your monitor's refresh rate will simply be partial frames anyway. There's no reason why uncapping your FPS will necessarily provide you a better gameplay advantage, and in fact it may do the opposite due to greater FPS variability, so experiment to see if simply using a higher framerate cap is actually a better compromise of smoothness and performance.

Note: When playing online, the engine is capped at 90FPS regardless of these settings, and can't be uncapped.

UT3 has to be the weirdest game I've even played. I bumped up the cap from 62 to 85 and now it runs around 60fps at all times. Upping the cap shouldn't have done anything, and yet it did. Oh well.

I'm looking to pick up either CoD:4 or WaW tomorrow. Which one would be a better choice? World at War just came out with a new map pack, and I already have 3 copies of CoD:4 for my consoles. Don't ask. So I'm probably going to get World at War. But I'm open to suggestions.

Read this forum, and rushed to BB on saturday, opened the box immediately and booted up, checked display settings, and was maxed out at 1400x900. I was going to settle for this, but then after playing WOW for 5 hours straight the video card would start to lock up, and i was also hearing the hard drive making a strange clicking noise. Returned the laptop on sunday for an exchange and opened up the new box and BAM 1920x1200 :). Im a very happy camper!

In the next couple of months I'm looking at getting a new CPU, but I'm not sure which one I should get. The two that I'm looking at are the T9800, and the X9100. The X9100 can be overclocked and overall is the better chip, but it uses a higher voltage then the T9800. They're both about the same price, so money isn't an issue.

Also, will the price of CPUs drop in the next 2-4 months? I'm already having problems with money, and I want to save a few bucks wherever I can.

Assuming you have a P-7805u, you can't overclock ANY cpu in these machines, including the X9100.
So choose which you would like based on the stock clocks because thats all you can use.

As for price, Nobody really ever knows, but prices drop all the time on everything in the world so its possible.

I thought that because it was an extreme chip that it could be. In that case, I would rather go with the lower voltage. I don't want to risk overheating the laptop.

The only thing that scares me is the install. It seems pretty straightforward, so hopefully it ends up being that way. I'll probably be on here asking more questions when I actually end up buying it. I would hate to mess up and break something. But it looks easy enough.

What are some things that can easily be messed up? Or some common mistakes? This would be my 2nd time opening up a laptop. First being opening up my Macbook to install RAM.

You can't really mess up with these, just so easy to do.
Common mess-ups would be implying the Thermal Paste wrongly or something, also some mess up and take the little pad off the Heatsink. So don't do either of those two things and it should be a breeze.
Heres a guide if you've never seen it:

See, one guide says to take off the thermal pads. One guide doesn't say anything. So I should keep them on? I already knew about the thermal paste. Just put a little on, and spread it with a glove. 2 of the screws have springs under them, so hopefully that's not a problem. I'm so paranoid.... :p

Edit: I might open it up tomorrow just to see what's under the hood. I have 10 days off of school so I might as well.

Edit 2: One of the screws for the heatsink (the 1st one) won't come out. I didn't want to use too much pressure, and I used the same screwdriver as the one for the first 5 screws. Normal? Or should I use more pressure?

If you've uninstalled all of the bloatware that comes with the computer, stopped unnecessary programs at start-up, and ran a cleaner to get rid of registry entries/old files then that's all you can do in terms of cleaning up the pre-installed crap. Different drivers also work better on different systems, so try out different drivers. Also -

Higher 3dmark Scores =/= More FPS

They give you a general idea of where your laptop is, but nothing more. I got 9616 on mine and yet I'm still trying to figure out why I have FPS issues in-game.
