please give me some specific directions as to which programs i should use to get rid of what.

i haven't got rid of any of the bloatware and didnt clean the registry.
i've tried 4 types of dox drivers:

    181.22 quality = 8600~8700
    182.05 balance = 8400
    182.05 quality = 8300

First of all, download PCDecrapifier. http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/
That will get rid of all the bloatware and software that you don't need. This should speed things up a little bit.

    Next, download CCleaner. http://www.ccleaner.com
This will get rid of old shortcuts, clean up the registry, and also improve performance. Also, using this you can disable items from starting up with the computer.

im amazed you have 9600 for your score..
i did pcdecrapifier and ccleaner, and removed almost everthing, and ran 182.05 quality dox driver 3dmark06, and got 8330.
    almost same as before.

i noticed you OC'ed your card, can that make so much difference?

Your using 182.05 quality, which might be your problem. For general gaming, most people use Balanced. If they want to crack out the highest frame rate, they use performance. For benchmarking, use performance. Hardly anyone uses quality because it lowers the FPS with no noticeable quality difference.

Overclocking makes a small difference of about 400 points at the most. I overclock modestly to 655/899/1750. Most people can get to 710/950/1750 with no problems. Overclocking past that depends on the laptop.

    i am getting paranoid.
we have the same specs, and i am getting 8516 on 181.22 performance.
assuming i did overclock and added 400 more points, that's only 8900.
    you have 9600.
where did you get the 700 points??
can the same spec'ed laptops have such differences?

ps; im assuming you are running your tests at 1280x1024 on a separate monitor as well?

I feel the same way right now, but with different things. Somethings cutting my FPS in half and I can't figure it out. I just did a reformat so I'll see how it goes tomorrow.

I'm using the free version of 3dmark so the tests are at 1280x1024 but they're on laptop monitor. It shouldn't make a difference as long as it's the same resolution. Are you running any background programs? Anti-viruses? Firewalls? Even simple things such as AIM? 8516 isn't a bad score, and if you look around there are many others on the forum with similar scores.

I tested with 1280x800 and i got 9053 using dox 181.22 performance!!! YEAH!!!
EXTERNAL MONITOR TESTING IS bad for your scoring!!!!

edit: i did the same 1280x800 test with dox 182.05 performance, and i got 8652...
    WTH!
going to try 181.22 balanced now.. and got 8930

Anything plugged into your ports but the AC cord is bad for testing, External hard drives, some mouses, etc, all effect your score.

I might have to talk to Geek Squad about getting mine fixed. I don't know what's wrong... I did a clean install. Nothing's running in the background. I've tried Dox, Desktop w/ Custom .ini, Laptop Drivers.... Nothing seems to help. I can benchmark fine but when it comes to games, nothing wants to run right. It doesn't matter what game it is, my FPS still get cut in half.

My 3DMark06 scores were in the 8200 range with dox graphic driver. So i reverted back to the Nvidia Beta driver from NVidia site. With a little O/C i surpassed 9500 score without any glitch. Found ever test run very stable for that score.
For that i did the following
    1) Made sure the laptop adapter was plugged in.
    2) Power plan was set to High Performance.
    3) Made a couple of changes in the Nvidia Control Panel
    i) Image setting was Set for High Performance.
ii) Device setting under performance was set as
Core Clock Speed was set to 708
Memory Clock Speed was set to 952
Shader Clock Speed was set to 1771

    My Score 9512.

For some Dox drivers are good and for some the stock ones. So as many of them said in here, for some its works and for some it doesn't.

HAHAHAH thanks everyone!! i got score of 9318 without overclocking on nvidia 179.48 beta driver!!!! WOO
its just that the 179.48 doesnt have 1280x800 in the 3dmark06 resolution lists.
the test i did was in 1280x768...
maverick, what resolution did you run the 3dmark06 test in to get that 9500?

The default resolution, which i believe is 1280x1024 .... Good to know that you crossed the 9000 mark. Had the cpu been higher this sytem would have easily crossed 10000 mark.

Yes but iirc since he tested in a different resolution, comparing his score to a score in a different resolution is apples to oranges. The only way he can actually get a legit score to compare with others is if he's running the benchmark in the same resolution.

I'm having a lot of issues with my laptop. I can benchmark fine, but when it comes to games I'm not getting as good of performance as I should. CoD WaW runs 35-50 FPS depending on where I am in game. Is this normal? It just seems like I should be getting more out of this laptop. Could it be something in the NVIDIA Settings?

    AF: Application Controlled.
    AA Gamma Correction: On
    AA: Application Controlled.
    AA Transparency: Off
    Conformant Texture Clamp: Use Hardware
    Error Reporting: Off
    Extension Limit: Off
    Force Mipmaps: None
    Max. Pre-Rendered Frames: 3
Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration: Single Display Performance Mode
    Anisotropic Sample Optimization: On
    Negitive LOD bias: Allow
    Texture Filtering Quality: Quality
    Trilinear Optimization: On
    Threaded Optimization: On
    Triple Buffering: Off
    V-Sync: Let Application Decide

This happens even if nothing is running in the background. I turned McAfee off, uninstalled it, reformated it, etc. and nothing helps. The reason I bring this up is because I've seen others WITH the 1920x1200 screen getting higher FPS

If you have Sync Every Frame on in COD5 it basically cuts you fps in half. So because our screens refresh at 60 as opposed to 120 with that option enabled you'll get max 60. If ou disable you should range from 80-110 fps thats what i get. Also has alot to do with other settings in COD5 aswell. But the Sync option is the main culpret of low fps. Oh and server to.

I don't have Sync Every Frame on in COD5, so I don't believe that it's the problem. I'm just worried because I see others at max settings with the high res screen getting more FPS. I have AA at 2x, and AF at 4x. Everything else is maxed out (Textures to Extra, etc.)

Your Nvidia settings are identical to mine so ok there. What res are you running cod5 at? I run at 1680x1050 it seems to be the best balance between visual & gameplay(fps) assuming you have a 1920x1200 screen & not a 1440x900. Also is your GPU overclocked?

Nothing is overclocked, and I'm running at 1440x900. In single player it varies from 35 in some areas to over 70 in others, but that's with nothing there.

Unless I got 2 bad ones in a row, I did. This one has a NVIDIA sticker that says CUDA on it, while the other one didn't, but it's a sticker. Is there any way I can test my GPU other then 3dmark06? I can benchmark fine but for some reason I have issues while gaming. CNET got 120fps in UT3, I get a fraction of that. Same with CoD:WaW. A bad batch isn't out of the question, but I already had to go through a lot of trouble returning it out of the 14 day period.

Um in your sig you have 9800m OC'ED thats why i asked. Anyway, you'll get way more fps with UT3 than you will with CoD 5. In CoD5 you can pull up the console(the button right below escape)and input "/vid_restart" without the quotes. The screen should refresh then check your fps it may go up some. Also i find if you have the foliage setting and the ocean setting set to ON the fps actually go up. If im near nades/smoke/gas 30-50fps clear area w/gunfire 80-110. And if you can benchmark fine that tells me its not a bad GPU and more of a game setting problem.

if i made a video with fraps, and during recording it said 30fps, but when i replay the video, it says 60fps.
    which is right?

add: obvisouly, when i recorded crysis on fraps, the game was running at 10fps, but when i play the video it says 60fps.
so how do i get the video to record the actual fps during game?

Does anyone know where I'm suppose to find my "product Key" for the pre-installed microsoft office-home picture viewer? I tried typing in the product code on the bottom of the laptop but it said it was invalid. Did we get a product code with these laptops or is it just a trial version that came with this system? Thanks in advance for any help. Bill

i just ran into the weirdest problem.
when i shut down the computer, it doesnt shut down, but restarts.
i have the battery removed and the AC plugged in, and it wont shut down.
i think it only does this when its plugged in, but i dont have the battery with me to test out.

i found out why it doesnt shut down or restart properly: you have to plug out all your usb's

If it's part of the Office 2007 apps it's a 30 day trial. IIRC (I reinstalled everything on mine and used my own office 03) it only includes the basic "works" suite of programs that work indefinitely.

Mine has been doing that randomly. For about a month it stopped doing that. Suddenly it's back. More often it shuts down. But once in awhile, it restarts when it shoulda shutdown. Sometimes 3 or 4 shutdowns in a row. I never walk away from the laptop until I know it shutdown now. I usually have the battery in. I gotta remember what I was running before that happens and check the temps with HWmonitor. It's an OS/hardware combo to shutdown/restart.

Hmm, could you guys help me?
I've been noticing a lot of weird fps with my 7805u.
In TF2, I'll be playing and I'll get around 100 fps when I first spawn, but then I walk out into little to no action whatsoever and my fps will drop down to 30-40 fps. Also, my fps will randomly drop when walking around. I'm only playing on 1440x900 with everything set to high and 2x antialiasing. This same thing happens when I play HL2 Deathmatch, as well... but that will drop down to 20 sometimes if I just look at a wall. I have my power setting to high performance and my system is plugged in. I have my system overclocked with the lasted dox drivers, 182.46. I get around a 9200 score in 3dmark06, but it doesn't seem like that when I'm actually playing.
I hear stories of people playing games in 19200x1200 maxed out with higher fps than I'm getting...

yes it can, check your router settings, try setting it to G only. Also use WPA2-Personal and AES for your router security options too. I have a Dlink Dir-655 and I connect at 150mbps. On your 5100 AGN settings in Advanced tab make sure the top two boxs are on auto too.

When i use the AES security my network has a red x on it and i cant connect. And when i try to run in N only mode it tells me that my computer doesnt support that setup. And when i run on G only mode i cant get higher than 54Mbps.

That's weird, as far as the security problem, make sure you are using the right passwork key. Your lappy does support N, you may need to double check your wireless card settings, make sure it's setup for N
