I wiped the drive to setup a RAID 0. But i ran all 3 recovery discs the driver is up to date, and everything is working great except that. When i go to the advanced tab in the properties of the wifi card it says 802.11n is enabled  And as for the WPA-AES i use a combo of letters and #s. I can use TKIP but not AES. Screwy

P-7805u: Just bought the notebook. Does anyone know how to upgrade to a blu ray drive and if so, had to buy one for this notebook?

He has a P-7805u, it has a sata dvd drive, the link you show shows pata.
    this is from another post of mine, I bought this drive for $125.99, works great with power dvd ultra 9;

I just received and installed my replacement Blue Ray Drive from fazecomputers on ebay, they where great in handling this, no problem with the exchange. I put the new CT10N with FW WR06 running with Powerdvd9Ultra and it works great, just installed it in 2 mins, and it looks awesome. The key is to get the right FW WR06, if you get it from fazecomputers, be sure to message them and tell them you want the CT10N with FW WR06 and you have a Gateway FX laptop.

That link mentions that for the 7805u model one needs a SATA drive.

Otherwise, aren't the installation instructions pretty much the same?

Hi all. Just wanted to let you know I have been gone for a week but I did get the system in and it was the 1440x900 res. I tried it out and the video card kept locking up, locking up my entire system. Downloaded the new drivers with the same result. I took it back to Best Buy, they gave me the display model after checking all of the other machines in boxes there. Brought it home to find the toggle for the Wifi Was broken. At this point I'd decided that Gateway didn't get another chance so I now have an HP that runs 10x better. LOL Good luck to all of you! :)

many say that the default color settings of their 7805u is too grayed out, or too bright, or whatever.
i have adjusted mine according to lcd color test images available online, and i am satisfied with how it looks.
problem is, when i turn on a game, all those settings temporary goes back to default color settings, until i turn the game off or minimize it.
is there a way to prevent this?

ps. my trash bin icon is invisible. it still functions normally. will it return if i reboot? too lazy to reboot..

I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!! You took your malfunctioning gateway back, that is understandable. BUT, you take a DISPLAY model. WITHOUT checking that everything works properly. As everyone knows display models are played with, touched, fondled, and beat on. But, instead of blaming yourself, for this mistake. You blame gateway. That's not really fair to the company. I was anti gateway for many years, after servicing well, I can't count how many of them. But, I did my research first and then talked to alot of the members here about the ownership of one. And, Finaly decided to give them a chance. And, Honestly, I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER.

Now, I looked at every HP at bestbuy, and, couldn't find a single one that would out preform this gateway. Maybe a couple with faster procs, but, defiantly nothing that would out pace this machine in gaming. So how could you find a HP at Bestbuy that out preforms this machine, when 90% of the HPs there dont even have a true dedicated graphics card? Let alone DDR3 ram (yes i realize that the performance increase is nominal).

Sorry, stuff like this gets to me. It's like blaming Chevy because you ran out of gas, or forgot to shut your drivers door and it got ripped off in traffic.

Hey all. Just wanted to chime in and say hi. I got my 7805u about 2 weeks ago and swapped in a P9600 (2.66GHz, 6MB cache) that I had. All is running great, I cannot compare any benchmarks with you guys since I only run Linux and use Phoronix Test Suite for benchmarking.

I was pretty surprised how little I ended up having to do to have it working the way I liked. Generally I just use it at home connected via HDMI to my LCD monitor and I'm using a Turtle Beach USB sound card that I already had laying around just because it seemed to sound better than the internal.

Okay, I am new here and picked up this laptop(see sig) a couple of weeks ago after months thorough research and pricing in available game laptops. I found that this laptop was one of the best available.(I guess I am one of the last to know this) Now years ago I dabbled in building my own PC's (386's) etc... but that tailed off in the mid 90's, so I know SOMETHING about computers. With the new Vista software I am little apprehensive about doing changes to it.
I am a gamer and currently running Xbox360's and prefer FPS games.
I bought Crysis as the first PC games for this Laptop and want to get the best out it.
First off is there a detailed guide out there that points out all the BLOATWARE that needs to be unloaded off off this machine. I don't want to delete something that's needed.

I have already loaded the FRAPS and the HWmonitor software and read about the driver upgrade for the video card. Just wanted to get the bloatware off first.

I guess a baseline is needed first to determine what I have. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I thought about upgrading mine but this site http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html tells me that the P9600 is inferior to the P8400 that came with the 7805u. Let me know if they are wrong.

The P9600 has definitely been better for me.. All of the benchmark results from the Universe/Universe-X suites in Phoronix Test Suite have been much better... that's in addition to the fact that the system feels noticeably faster too as far as Compiz/Effects handling and gaming (WoW, ET:QW, few others).

I am not sure the change from 2.2 to 2.6 GHz makes all that much difference, but adding the doubled L2 cache... *shrug*

Okay, Here a follow up to my earlier post.
Ran Crysis for about an hour-

    FPS = 15-30
    GPU temp=max 66°c
    CPU core 0= 48°c
    core 1 = 49°c

The Vista performance rating is 5.2. everything is a 5.9 except the CPU which is 5.2.

I have already done the battery 100% performance change and the NVIDIA graphics card change from Quality to Performance.

    What would you do first?

Maybe I just got lucky. :) All I know is that even the second one I got (and btw it was supposedly checked out by BB BEFORE I purchased it) lagged on opening programs, etc..... it doesn't matter. I am happy and the HP I purchased definitely runs better than both of the Gateways. The one I purchased is the dv7-1285u. The system rocks and I love it.

P.S. The toggle switch for Wifi isn't exactly the best way for it to be turned on and off as far as I'm concerned. This HP has a touch sensitive backlit light that turns it on and off. WAY better and nothing there to break.

This has got to stop. Seriously. This has nothing to do with the Gateway laptop. It has to do with Audacity. If you google "Audacity record speakers", then you will find your solution!

Uh, where you getting that? Looking at the chart the P8400 is #100 and the P9600 is #67 overall. The P9600 is quite a bit faster in many apps due to the 6mb L2 and 366mhz of extra clock, in apps that don't use the L2 it'll be 10 percent or less faster, but in ones that do use the cache up will be loads faster.

Hey guys, just got this laptop today. Have been installing updates and games and what not, and I've noticed that the fan seems to start up for a second or two, then stop, and repeat itself 10 or so times before the fan comes on completely for a few minutes. When the fan stops spooling up, a sort of high pitched noise comes from it. Do I just need to break in the laptop or something? It seems to be happening a little less frequently now that I've warmed this sucker up. Any insight would be appreciated.

edit: after searching through this thread, it seems that my problem has happened to other people, and I'm just not used to hearing the fan speed up and slow down....I'm assuming this on/off cycle will stop once I heat up the GPU with some games.

Just to condense this some... I was wondering exactly what drivers you guys are using for game play? I know some people are using different drivers depending on what they are doing?

Also I've heard some people in this forum are having issues with playing Warhammer Online... has that been corrected? Is anyone NOT having an issue with this game? I know they recommend a 2.5 processor.... but my desktop 2.2 has no issues.

Also what type of DDR3 RAM speed does this laptop come with? I didn't see anyone say...

Talked to a Gateway rep about it, said everything was acting fine. At idle the fan has a hard time figuring out whether it needs to be on or off. When I run games, the fan turns on and stays on fine. I'm a little disappointed in the FPS im getting in Left 4 Dead (only game I have on it so far), as my desktop with a single-core and 8800 outperforms it. Gonna try out some different driver combos I guess.

I've found the best performance to be with the official Nvidia beta drivers on their site. All my games run PERFECTLY, except for Left 4 Dead, so not sure if there's some option I'm overlooking. Oh well, I'll keep trying to figure out what the deal is. Other than that, the laptop is working well :)

Yeah Rycorlin, I also need to get a cooler option figured out. I'm leaving to move from the US to Korea for at least a year, which is why I bought this guy. But I definitely want to take all safeguards necessary to keep this machine in tip-top shape.

I've actually had the best performance with the original drivers factory shipped. I have it overclocked with the notebook cooler (see above). Works AMAZING! Trackmania Nations Forever online 1920 x 1200 with a Xbox 360 Wireless controller is so clutch. The eSata port for my external 1TB which I download movies directly to and entire series too; and then share over the network so i can watch it on my 1080p HDTV through the XBOX. I love technology :)

Just uploaded a quick 30sec clip of me messing around in a Warhammer PvP scenario, for anyone looking to buy this laptop to play it. Running in maxed out settings, hid UI to get rid of clutter.
