Thanks for that Lokk! About to install and play Warhammer myself on this laptop. Glad to see that it runs good.

I had the exact same issue with my p7805u.
The fan would not spin up reliably at all. However when the fan was spinning at high load it would cool the gpu very quickly. I recorded gpu temps of 106c before the fan would engage at high load. GPU temp at idle was ~65c.
I spoke with gateway techies several times, as well as BestBuy. They agreed that the problem was with the gpu temperature sensor. There is no way to manipulate the fan in the bios and the windows vista driver signing debacle meant finding 3rd party apps with working 'fan' options was impossible.
Thankfully, due in large part to this thread, i was able to track down the problem quite early. I took the laptop back to BestBuy and demanded an exchange, free of charge (aka w/o their 15% restocking fee). BTW, everything is working properly with my new p7805u. I have no temperature/fan issues whatsoever, and have yet to surpass 76c on the gpu. (GPU temp at idle, ~44c)
On the topic of getting the exchange, this is how it went down:
It took a bit of explaining, and the tech insisted i play an actual game for ~15mins so he could take a look at the temps himself. Unfortunately he also insisted that I NOT plug the laptop in, and run off of battery power instead. After convincing him that it needed to be plugged, he grudgingly did so, and the temperature spiked from 59c to 97c in about 10 seconds. All without triggering the fan to spin at high load. That was enough to convince him.
I'm not sure if he did this intentionally, but here are some things to be aware of, based on my one time experience:
- BestBuy and similar bigbox stores are cooled by industrial fans, it is generally pretty chilly in there and the counters are very cold,
thus, it might take longer to reproduce a temperature sensitive problem - don't let the techie touch the laptop, ever. Don't let him move it, don't let him pick it up.
if the laptop is moved or picked up, it vastly reduces the temperatures (compounded by the first point, the ambient temperatures in those stores are pretty chilly to begin with) - Make sure to plug it in. I'm not entirely sure why this causes such an increase in gpu temperature... perhaps it has something to do with how much power the gpu can drain when running off of the battery. (i dunno, i'm not an electrical engineer)
--EDIT--
Spoke too soon, the Escape key is malfunctioning. Apparently it requires replacing the entire laptop... back I go. ffs this is getting ridiculous. - BestBuy and similar bigbox stores are cooled by industrial fans, it is generally pretty chilly in there and the counters are very cold,

Hey guys Im new. I just got this laptop a few days ago. Its great!
I found out that I got very lucky apparently... On the sticker it came with it says its a 1440 x 900 resolution. The screen is actually 1900 x 1200 though!! It's a little big for gaming but when not gaming it's definitely nice.
Do you guys think a cooler is necessary? I don't want to fry the thing from playing CoDWAW too long or really any other intensive game.
This thing is a beast. It looks great, has all you would want, and is cheap! -
Ussually the GPU and CPU don't clock as high on battery power as they would on AC, that's probably why you see less problems on battery. Hopefully you have better luck with this, the escape key thing could be fixed by swapping the keyboard more than likely, but probably the in store goons aren't allowed to take apart the laptop to fix it.
-
Glad you're enjoying it. For me, I've been playing games on it ever since I've got it, and haven't had the temperatures get high at all. All I've done is prop the back of the laptop up on top of 2 DVD cases. Keeps my laptop nice and cool even in 5-hour gaming marathons
-
exactly.
Furthermore, since it is still within the 14-day refund period from the retailer, the laptop is not eligible for gateway repair either. Additionally, swapping out the keyboard requires sending it in as the procedure is a "non-customer repair".... which is ridiculous =/
i'd gladly just have them send me a new keyboard and swap em out myself. I went through 4 keyboards on my first Dell and they sent me replacements no questions asked. pop the old one out, pop the new one in, takes all of 5mins if you're blindfolded. -
Good to know. I think if coolers were absolutely necessary then the laptop manufacturer would actually recommend them with some slip that came with the packaging. I know they help, but I just don't see carrying out around with me everywhere and using it all the time anyway since a laptop is made to be portable. Even though this one is considered a desktop replacement, it still is very light in my opinion.
-
the Fn + F1 key will turn of the LED lights above the keyboard, and I do this every time I turn my computer on.
Is there a way to leave it off permanently so I don't have to turn it off manually all the time? -
What's the FN-F6 do? It looks like a bluetooth symbol?
-
it is if you have a bluetooth module installed in it, otherwise it doesnt do anything
-
ah, Thanks Big Mike.

Thanks for the advice, bought the drive, but cyberlink ultra doesn't work, but will work with Any DVD. Does this mean I have an HDCP issue and if so, is there any other software or patch I can use to fix this without buying Any DVD.
Thanks again! -
Thanks for the advice, got the drive from Faze computers, installed cyberlink 9 ultra, but it won't play blu rays, it plays other dvds, though. I downloaded Any DVD and now it plays blu rays. Is there any other software I can get or patch without buying any dvd?
thanks again! -
Hi guys. I bought a 7805u a couple weeks ago and was thinking about upgrading to a T9900 CPU. Do I need to upgrade to a certain BIOS version or can I just replace the P8400? Thanks!
-
Nope. As far as I knoe and what I Have read, No need to do any BIOS updates whatsoever.
-
Hey, where did you get the T9900 and for how much?
Thanks!
-
just replace old cpu and reinstall new one clean area and use thermal paste reset system property's to report new chips name ,be careful removing old one and dropping in new one good luck ,and my dvdultra9 works great with bluray too
thanks
-
What do you mean reset system property? Restart?
-
I haven't bought it yet lol. Prices on ebay seem to be in the low-mid 400s though.
Also, how do I reset the system properties? I read something in another post about going into device manager and updating the drivers for both cores one at a time. Is that what you mean? -
del the old cpu in propertys reboot to show new cpu thats all
-
Wait huh? Where do i go and delete it? Go to device manager? Will you explain throughly if you dont mind please? Ill appreciate it gladly cattman
-
My 7805u is also doing the same thing!
-
when I upgraded my cpu it still said P8400( in devicemanager) so I deleted it and rebooted and the new cpu showed up P9600 ,had to do it 2 times since its a dualcore chip then device manager reported it as the new one God I hope that helps
realy no big deal my friend

So I got a p-7801u from TigerDirect a week ago and I really loved it until I started getting BSoDs during startup. I thought it might have to do with the software/drivers I installed so I used the Gateway restore discs to restore. Haven't installed any drivers but I still get BSoDs during startup or when waking up from sleep/hibernate.
Most of the time the computer starts up just fine and games run just fine as well.
I'm also a bit puzzled because I get a variety of different BSoDs, not just any single one.

I'm hoping it's not a hardware problem but it's beginning to seem more likely. I haven't overclocked or installed anything other than plug and play usb mice/flash drives.
Sorry for the wall of text. Any comments/suggestions?
Thanks! =D -
Doing what????
-
Anyone undervolt the stock CPU? What are your results? I'm looking into testing this out, on my notebook and desktop, never tried it before but if I can get my computer to run cooler all the better.
-
One of my friends was thinking of getting one of these things... Anyone know if there's any chance of getting a 1920 screen from anywhere?
-
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=345851 has an example of a 1920 screen, I believe. Check it out.
-
what part of the us are ya in, I know my local BB Still has a couple of the 1920s left, otherwise you would have to go the 7801 route.
-
Hi all,
I've owned this computer for about 3 days now. It generally has run great and I have had zero problems in about 8 hours of playing Empire Total War. I do have one significant problem, however. This computer WILL NOT play any videos. Anytime I have tried to play an .avi or .wmv the screen locks up and goes black within about half a minute. I then get an error message that "the display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
This doesn't just happen once or twice, but every time!
By the by- Gateways tech support has been horrible. I basically sent them the paragraph above, and it took a series of about 5 emails just to let their tech know that the 7805u exists and it is indeed a 1GB card and not 512mb.
Any ideas on where to begin would be appreciated. My best hunch is to try the new beta drivers. I'm beginning to fear I bought a lemon, but since I live in the middle east returns are not so easy.
Thanks -
I'm over in Florida.. Where did you find the screens mate?
-
pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?
Driver. I'm using 185.26. Try that one cause I'm not having any problems
-
Where in Florida, gt2wizard?
I saw 1920 screen on demo units in Bradenton/Sarasota area not that long ago.
Can't remember which store though. Sorry. -
My local Best buy got a shipment of WUXGA's. Keep checking.
-
And where is that?
Any leads around Memphis guys? -
I installed the latest nvidia drivers and my GPU is still having problems. I can't play a .wmv or .avi for more than a couple minutes without the GPU locking up. I also often get static snow across the screen even when just idleing. I reviewed the last 50 pages of this thread and have seen at least 2 others have had this problem, but they never posted the resolution. Any other advice? Did I just get a lemon? Thanks,
Huggy -
alright, i have had my 7805 for about 2 months now, about a month ago i noticed my unit would just glitch/freeze for about a second then work normally, problem seems to be intermittent and very annoying. i have replaced hdd reinstalled windows and swapped ram from another unit at BB. still getting same issue, i have a secondary hdd (250gb 5400) pure storage. i searched for this issue, 50 pages or so and i honestly dont want to search through the remaining 200 haha so if anyone has some insight on this, plz throw the info my way
.
oh yea i ran a hardware diag / 48hr stress test on whole unit( ram / hdd / cpu ) no errors found. cpu upgrade is starting to sound reaaallllyyyy good about now! -
I just got home and opend mine and it is a 1920X1200 display!!! Very Excited! The batch number is I075741
Hope that helps someone out.
(Also is there a reason why the fan on this thing pulsates? It does not stay on constant?) -
hello fellow p-7805u users. i got mine just recently
i just want to ask, is there something wrong with this?
is this supposed to run on x16 not x1? TIA! -
pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?
This is what I got. I'm sorry. I don't know how to post the small pic that when you click it, it takes you to the big one. So if some one can explain or post a link.
-
hey all... I have seen this talked about many, many times, but there seems to be two different issues and I want to make sure I'm good:
I just got my WUXGA P-7805u yesterday from BB and everything is great except for the fan (GPU I think). I have read issues of pulsing every few minutes, but what mine does is far from pulsing at semi-regular intervals. Once things have started up, my fan will start to spin up then about a half second later stop, then about 1-2 seconds later it will spin up again and stop and on and on for a pretty long while (1-5 minutes) after which it will take a couple of minutes before starting up again.
This seems very sporadic but I will only worry about it if it is a problem. I upgraded to the 9.12 BIOS (I think that was the number) and it actually did help but not solve the problem. I am running the latest 185.68 Nvidia drivers from LaptopVideo2Go.
I downloaded HWMonitor and it looks like my CPU temps are good at 34C and my GPU temps are holding at 47C.
Played a game of Dawn of War 2 last night (looked great!) and the fans stayed ramped up at a low constant so that it no longer did the sporadic blasting
Am I good or do I need to do an exchange/repair? -
ah ok, now i know why i only had x1 of bandwidth in pcie. its because the batteries is not attached. but when i put on the batteries together with the power adapter, it became x16 (i dont know if it'll still run @ x16 if i unplug the power adapter)
no wonder i get choppy fps while playing TFT
but will the batteries wear out in the long run? -
pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?
To brazzle, my BIOS is 9C.17.00 and I bought mine in Feb. The fan will run to cool the GPU fan and I'm sure you know that. My GPU an still pulses and is right now even just with the internet so I would guess you unit is OK.
To tarpo, now that you mention the battery issue, it makes sense. I was playing Tiger Woods 08 the other day and paused for a few. Meanwhile my 1 year old son had unplugged my lappy from the socket but was still plugged in to the back. When I restarted is was slow and crappy. But when I plugged in it was fine. So I guess is will revert to whatever your power settings are for battery power and that is why you see PCI-e xxxxx @ x1. -
Ruh~roh, I may have reverted my BIOS to 9C.12.00. I just got mine yesterday and assumed 9C.12.00 was the latest!
-
pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?
Here's proof buddy. Don't know if the revert will make much of a difference though.
-
Where I can find P-7805u with 1920×1200(WUXGA) resolution? or there is none?
-
what are good idle temps for the gpu? i've had it on for several hours without anything more than running some installs and browsing the web and I'm idling at this point at 67C with PowerMizer off
-
pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?
-
crap. its looking like i might have to go exchange this thing. its running 68C consistently now without pushing it very hard....
would it be better if I tried to reapply some thermal paste myself? I saw in another thread that helped someone's temps go down significantly; I snatched a WUXGA model and I don't want to risk getting a WXGA one. -
my cpu was only half covered in thermal paste - you should check your cpu def.!
