I ordered some OCZ Freeze Extreme thermal compound, hopefully putting that on my CPU and GPU will solve the problem. Everything else appears to be working fine.. fans spin up, etc, it is just the actual temp that is too high.

EDIT: BTW how easy is it to get to the GPU/CPU HSF?

CPU-Very easy. A few screws and you see it. 4 on the CPU HS and one on the chipset. The GPU-that's another story. Gotta take the whole thing apart. Kind of aggravating. May want to look around the forum some more before you draw any far out conclusions. There are a few threads about the graphics and OC'ing and so forth and some of them cover temps. Do a search for 7805 and 7805u and see what you can find. You may find a solution instead of having to tear apart your Lappy. OK?

I just ran Crysis for about 10 minutes on Mainstream settings @ 1440x900 with HWMonitor in the back and my max temp was 100C... thats bad.

EDIT: Probably won't bother waiting for OCZ Freeze to get here... I think I'll go exchange and try and get another WUXGA.

EDIT2: Is it possible I need to offset the temps on my monitors? I doubt it since Nvidia, RealTemp, HWMonitor, and RivaTuner all give the same, but still...

Quick question. Does anyone notice a lump under the orange trim right above the right hand corner of the touch-pad. I originally thought the space-bar was just a little just a little off center as it wasn't uniform against the trim. Upon careful inspection, I noticed a little lump under the casing, right above the corner of the touch-pad. It's really no big deal, as it doesn't seem to be affecting anything hard-ware wise, but I just found it a little strange as the display model at best-buy also has the same condition.

So at 100C you can actually boil water! Yeah. That's hot. A little too hot for my liking. What do you mean offset the temps? Seems to me that if you're getting the same on 4 different programs, thats what the temp is. I wish we all could find a fan control for this 7805. I can't find one that will work. Speedfan won't. Just in case anyone suggests it

I am going to Best Buy tomorrow to attempt an exchange... what are the chances I can avoid the 15% restocking fee? I'd rather wait the 7-10 business days and one-way shipping costs to have Gateway fix it than pay that crap fee for a busted item.

    xxexvxrx,

I think I might have the same thing you're talking about. Its as if the panel bulges up in the center underneath the keyboard and above the touchpad... very strange.

Just tell them it's defective and overheating, if they want proof make them install a game and play it in front of you until it craps out.

Take some screen shots of your temps while it's hot and get some pics of other peoples temps from this forum and show them the difference. Geek Squad is OK when it comes to knowledge. They'll know it ain't right. Yeah, it may not be shutting down, but it's too hot and running that hot WILL cause early failure. I'll play a few games and record the temps and send the pics to you in an e-mail if you want. Or a PM. Whichever, just let me know....

so, I went to Best Buy today. They were VERY helpful and had no problem exchanging it sans restock fee.

However, after going through their entire stock, I could not find an additional WUXGA model. I went to a second Best Buy and found the machine with the earliest batch number and still no luck. I opted to not try any more machines.

Now I have to decide if I want to try OCZ Freeze without using my machine too much or send it in to Gateway, wait 7-10 business days, and get it back.

Is it possible to reseat the GPU HSF without voiding the warranty? I'm certain I could do it no problem but it isn't worth it if I lose my warranty. Sending it in to Gateway means I pay shipping one-way and they claim I will get my same machine back... but if for some reason they didn't, I'm screwed out of WUXGA.

    Thoughts?

Anyone else with this issue. Just curious if it might cause some future malfunction, or just strictly cosmetic.

Hey pmassey31545, how is it your laptop's got internal bluetooth(in your sig)? I thought they didn't come with bluetooth.

I'm also wondering how you all check the resolution of your laptops at the Bestbuys before you buy them. Do you just take it out and turn it on, going to the display properties to see the resolution(do they even let you do that?) or is there some specific serial number that you need to look for on the boxes? If there are special wuxga serial numbers, what are they?

I believe he installed the internal one (you can get it from hellowifi on ebay) like I did. There are several threads about it including a link to my how to page, though I actually took the laptop further apart than is necessary, several others have found that you can just take all the screws out of the bottom and lift up the front of the palm rest to get at the bluetooth module plug.

There's also a thread about what serial #s have what screens, those of us that got them early on just checked the floor models when they opened them up and they were pretty much all 1920x1200s, the store I went to was setting it up Sunday morning when I got mine and the demo was a 1920x1200 so i bought one, i did also use the serial/batch # threads as a reference which backed up it being a high res screen.

Yep Hello wifi is correct. $26. Pretty simple install too. And as Big Mike said, he wrote a NICE tutorial on how to with pics and all. Makes it soooo simple. Just make sure if you install, you have the wireless on and the Bluetooth feature on(Fn+F6).

Okay so now I'm seriously considering buying this laptop, but I'm not sure if I would need to buy a cooler with this. So, do you guys have problems with this laptop overheating a lot? Should I buy a cooler? If so, would the NZXT Notebook Cooler be good enough? Also are there any specific bags you guys would recommend me buying?

I haven't found the need for a cooler on mine, yamay, but then I haven't stressed it out as much as some.

It certainly wouldn't hurt, though, and knowing that, I've got a Targus AWE01US. Just having the notebook on it raises it almost a inch and allows improved air flow. At least it appears to.

Can't help with a new bag since the one I'm using is an older Kenneth Cole bag that just barely handles the P-7805u. I don't carry it around a lot so this is OK for me.

Was wondering if anyone else is having trouble with the new Nvidia driver they have posted on the website. It says it is a beta driver, though I am used to a better quality beta then this.

The problem when playing games on my laptop, I will see graphical errors, then it locks up. Sometimes when locked up it will pick back up and an error message will pop up amd say that the video card driver stopped responding.

Anyone else having these errors? or anything close? maybe a fix :D

No probs with heat here with CoD4 or TW08. Seems to stay pretty cool.

    I'm using 176.75 drivers. Tried several-185.26, 185.20, 185.50, and 185.68. 176.75 been best for me so far

Can someone provide a link to that driver? google pulled up a mess of things.
The newest Nvidia driver from their website is not responding to some 3d applications. When playing a game the error "video card driver has stopped responding" appears.

if u made a restore disc which you should have hopefully, u can rollback the drivers I believe, but I don't have a link sry :-(

Quick question though for anyone out there. I'm using a laptop cooler, which way do the fans blow on the bottom of the laptop?
The one on the side blows out (i think everyone figured that out when it started to wind up).
I have my GPU OC'd and it can handle alot but I can just tell when its about to lock up from overheating. I play Trackmania and crank the graphics to full gear and it will always handle in solo but online somtimes if theres 100 ppl in a match moving 200 mph it cant take a break and cool down so it just locks up instead.

I just have mine jacked up on a soft-cover book. My settings are maxed out when I play and I can feel the computer pumping out heat, but because it is elevated it gets plenty of air flow. And after I get done playing the temps drop really quickly. But to answer you question, they both (2 of them) blow out?

    Here is laptopvideotogo page http://laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/vista64/176.75
But if you click start>All Programs>Gateway>Gateway Recovery Management then in that window click the Restore tab, then click Reinstall Applications/Drivers then click contents. Scroll down till you see nVidia VGA Discrete. All the way to the right you click the little icon and then install. That will give you thee 176.75. Holla......

Did you run Driver Sweeper when you installed the drivers? Try reinstalling and using Drive sweeper if you didn't.
    how to:
    Download Driversweeper (google it)
    Uninstall current drivers
    Run driversweeper.
    Reboot.
    Install drivers.
    Reboot.

I just picked up one of these things and am really excited to start using it (1920x1200 looks AMAZING!)

Just have a few questions about some software that came with the computer and whether to trash or keep

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition [ENU]
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (x64)

    - I have no clue about these. I've read they are used by some programs and new programs may reinstall them anyway so I'm not worried if they stay or go too much. If they're bloatware though, let me know so I can get rid of them

    Windows Live Essentials
    Windows Live Sign-in Assistant
    Windows Live Sync
    Windows Live Upload Tool

    - These I am fairly sure are worthless to me. As far as I know, I've never used any of these services and don't plan on using them. However, seeing as how they are Windows things, I would feel terrible if I deleted something and rendered the OS useless

    CyberLink LabelPrint
    CyberLink Power2Go
    PowerDVD

    - I don't see any reason to save these, as there are alternative options available for free online. However, if these are truly the best out there then I might as well keep them and not have to worry about installing something else that's inferior

    Thanks ahead for any help.

Keep the first section, lose the second and whatever you want with the third. Power DVD has the ability(codecs) to play DVD's so you may wannna keep that. The others, just check em out to see if you like em or want to keep.

Awesome! Thanks for the quick response.

Now, when I tried to use Gateway's Recovery Management tool with a Dual Layer DVD the software ejected the disk and said that it was incompatible media. So, does the Recovery Management tool rely on regular, single layer DVD's or is there some work around so I can use the Dual Layers I have sitting around?

I haven't seen my GPU get hotter than 71-72C with CoD4 and TW08. It may be a little high and it never hurts to have a cooling pad anyway. I don't have one but I'm not gaming a whole lot, just every now and then.

Just checking in. Got my 7805u from TigerDirect a refurb at $678.99. It has the 1920x1200 screen! Once I find the batch number, I'll post it in the other topic since it's not on the box. It has a 138 serial number and the unit looks new. Only item I've noticed so far is that it sounds like something is moving near the lock area when the laptop is held upsidedown and moved from the left to right. I'll pull it apart later and check it out.

A little warm but Furmark is a beast if you turned it all the way up. Was the back of the laptop elevated at all? If not prop it up a little if you're hard core gaming and don't worry about it. If it was propped up that might be a little warm, I don't remember if I ran that or not, but generally 90C is the operational limit for mobile GPUs.

JUST sold my m-6862 and am in the process of buying a P-7805u FX ;-). I noticed that the DDR3 timings run around 7-7-7-20. QUESTION: is it better to have those timings on a DDR3 'OR' downgrade (if possible) to a DDR2 that runs at 5-5-5-15? IF its a wash (same) then it would probly be good to downgrade and get 8gig(MUUUUCH cheaper!) Also I'm going ahead and buying a t9600 to upgrade it when it gets to me.

    T9900 = fixed at 3.06ghz
X9100 = unlocked multiplier means it can be overclocked way over the initial
    3ghz.

The FX series does not allow overclocking, so this feature is pretty much useless.

DDR3 and DDR2 I think have different memory slots. If so you will not be able to exchange them..............

    http://cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

install hwmonitor and monitor your temps, if the laptop is overheating that could cause your issue. Otherwise it sounds like a hardware malfunction and most likely will have to be sent back.

Good for you dude. I just got mine on Saturday w/a WUXGA too. It's really nice but I'm also wondering what the programs in the second section do. I know they are "useless" but what can they actually be used for?

Okay so I just got my machine back from Gateway. Seems cooler, but still not great. After spending time in Crysis my max was 88C. It is not 100C but it still seems way too hot.

I don't want to send this thing back in... think I'm good?
