I would suggest that everyone takes their batteries out when they are by a power supply for a while. The battery quickly looses its charge if it is full and connected to an outlet for too long. The easily removable battery is a plus for this laptop, unlike other laptops, like apple's. Mac's don't have access to their batteries, so the owner is forced to hurt the battery if they keep it plugged in for an extended period of time.

In my nVidia Control Panel > Display > Change resolution my refresh rate is at 59 Hertz instead of 60, should i change it or leave it alone?

Guys any idea where P-7807u will be available online? I am not able to find a single place. Are these laptops out there in the market? or Gateway is still in the process of shipping them to retailers?

Also can we directly buy laptops from Gateway itself?

quite a many questions, but please answer. Actually it is a bit urgent...

Pretty sure that the laptop is already in stores, only problem is that its in too high of a demand so it runs out of stock really quickly.

I don't believe gateway sells the laptops themselves. They give them to retailers like J&R.

does a gtx260m makes a huge difference against the 9800gts? (considering the G71GX from BB) though there are some downsides with the asus like the 5400rpm and the ddr2
im planning to replace to replace my p-7805u. any suggestions? TIA!

Yes it is much better as it has much more stream processors (112 vs 64). Yes it is downclocked in the G71 but you could always reclock it to the original values yourself.

Also DDR2 and DDR3, not much difference unless your data rate mhz is much higher because latency is also worse for DDR3 in general. As for the HD, well, that's a given but again not much difference. And if you were gaming it's essentially something negligible. All a matter of tastes. Can you sacrifice milliseconds for HD performance for less frames? etc... GTX 260M is definitely more future proof.

However, since you already own a 7805 I suggest hold on to it until next generation of laptops come out to see the bigger difference.

Well Asus apparently downclocked the GTX 260M from what it SHOULD be out of Nvidia.

    Asus' downclocked GTX260M:
    Core Speed - 500 MHz
    Shader Speed - 1250 MHz
    Memory Speed - 799 MHz

    Nvidia's GTX260M Original:
    Core Speed - 550 MHz
    Shader Speed - 1375 MHz
    Memory Speed - 950 MHz

Like I said, you could always reclock it back to the original and I haven't heard of any issues doing so either.

Compare it to the 9800M GTS:
    Core Speed - 600 MHz
    Shader Speed - 1500 MHz
    Memory Speed - 800 MHz

So obviously in this regard the 9800MGTS is still pretty damn good. But those processor cores are also really important as the cores make the graphics work, so 260M is still superior, easily. More cores, more gigaflops, more power.

I'm stuck between the x9100 and the t9900. There's a huge price difference between the two with the x9100 coming in much lower. I don't care about the overclock, but the potential extra heat from the x9100 voltage has me concerned. I do plan to undervolt and use ICD7 so are my heat concerns unfounded?

    Thanks,
    Paul

Ok, got mine cracked open. No damage I can see beyond a couple nicks. I have the 1440x900 screen, disappointing but I can't complain. I am running the .17 bios, and I've got the rev'ing fan of doom :) Seriously, that is annoying as heck. And somewhat hypnotic! I wish there was a fix. I'm going to stress test mine for a few days, then begin the upgrade process.

    @madpoet:-

this thread should prove useful: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=372333

read from page 25 onwards. Got a X9100 installed in mine along with ICD7 applied on the CPU + northbridge. Above thread details my results and enusing debate about why i didnt see much change before/after.

Dont count it out so fast. I have also purchased an X9100. I would have prefered a t9900, but couldnt get one where I am. It should be here in the next couple of days. Anyway, yes it is going to generate more heat, and yes you cannot overclock it, but this is aside from heat the fastest CPU you can get for your NB. I know people say the 7805 was built for a 25W proc. That is a load of crap. First off, unlike the Asus NB's the CPU in this thing has a dedicated heatsink and fan for the CPU+ northbridge. The Asus G71 which they are cramming quad cores into only has one heatsink and fan for the whole thing. This thing is more than capable of cooling the X9100. Secondly, if you are on your FX right now reach around the back where the CPU vent is and feel for heat, did you ni=otice that barely any air is coming out of their even after gaming? Thats because the fan is hardly ever working. I cannot say for sure, but I have no doubt that our X9100 will fit in just fine with our NB's.

Well, mine should be here tomorrow (as should hopefully my ICD7) so we'll see what she looks like ;) I stress tested last night and seemed perfectly stable on stock. Hopefully between undervolting, ICD7, etc; my temps are not unreasonable.

Hello, I just received my P7805u, very good laptop. I got the 1900x screen and my graphic card is 42 idle and 65/70deg full charge so I am quite happy about it.

I think there is an issue though, I have around 8600 at 3dmark06 with factory settings.. It is supposed to be around 9200, do you know why there is that much difference ?
    Thanks.

Make sure you set the resolution correctly on 3Dmark. 12xxX800 is where you should be in the 9k range

As stated 8600 is about right for the screen, 3DMark 06 will default to 1280x1024 but those with the 1440 screen default to 1280x800. Unfortunately you have to purchase 3DMark06 to be able to change the resolution.......

Well... I am really late getting to the party on this lol. I looked at this computer way back when it came out and now I have been looking at the Asus G51 and G71. Somehow I made my way back here though because I think this laptop is more practical. I see I can get this on BB website for $1089 but I can't do in store pickup. So I am stuck with whatever model they send me. Is there a way I can get the 1900x1200 res screen at this date and time? or are all of them like that, or a lot at least? Sorry so late in the picture i tried the search button.

i was in the same boat. almost bought the g71 but decided to check out the refurb 7805u at tigerdirect. read in the comments section that some are still getting the hidef display so I took a gamble and it paid off. sadly, the refurbs are gone for now but keep an eye out if you're feeling lucky. even if u don't get the hidef, u'll save at least 300. mine looks brand spanking new.

Hey switching topics for a second, what settings do you guys use on COD WAW? I am using 1900x1200 and it's a bit laggy.

Edit: I also experience gray glitches while playing COD, does anyone else get these? What's the solution?

Hello all, my first post here, but I've actually read all 2,880 posts in this thread over the last few days.

The forum was also useful when I was researching the purchase, answering many of my questions (amazing what you can find with the search function, isn't it? I wonder how many posts would this thread contain if more people used it...) Anyway, I thought I should contribute what little I can so far:

I bought one of the Tigerdirect refurbs. It came with the higher res screen and has one of the serial numbers below 13851. Being a refurb, I don't see a batch number, but the manufacturing date is KS 081116, which I believe I read the batch numbers corresponded to.

I'm not a "gamer" (not that there's anything wrong with that :D ) but bought this machine on the advice of my son (who is) because many of my needs are very similar -- processor power, graphics capability, decent HD size, etc.

The unit arrived in pristine condition in a brown Gateway-branded box, about a week and a half prior to the date TD originally forecast. I had no trouble burning the recovery and driver DVDs -- on single sided media, as I don't have any double-layer blanks yet.

So rather than playing games, I've used the nVidia "GeoForms" screensaver to burn in the GPU and simultaneously ran IntelBurnTest at maximum to burn in the CPU. I left it run overnight and saw a GPU temp of 70°C and CPU temp of 63°C/63°C in the morning. (I tried to run that configuration with the TV plugged into the HDMI port, but GeoForms didn't like that and simply displayed a black screen.) This was all plugged in to AC power and set to "Performance".

In normal use (typing, surfing, some graphics processing) on Balanced mode, I can use this thing on my lap and the GPU goes up to about 50°C before the fan kicks in and drops it back down to 42 -- cycling around once a minute or so. The GPU fan is certainly louder than the CPU fan, but not annoyingly so. The CPU core temps seem to hover around 30-40°C when used like this, jumping up when load increases and the clock speed is boosted, then falling off when the clock speed drops. System board temps are generally between 43 and 49°C, as is the hard drive.

My son did manage to trigger a BSOD while simultaneously watching a video from an SD card, copying a set of files to the HD from a memory stick, and copying more files from my desktop via the wireless network card and then plugging in a USB mouse for the first time. Too much for the USB controller maybe?

I haven't done any serious benchmarking, but the Windows experience nonesense is about the same as everyone else -- 5.2 cpu and 5.9 for everything else.

I have the hidden 10 gig partition, although no files are visible in there using Windows. Interestingly enough, I have another hidden directory on the C partition called "ACER", in which is a directory called "Preload" containing what appears to be 1 gig of more recovery type files. ??? Maybe this HD was recycled from an Acer notebook at the refurb centre?

I love the full size keyboard, although the DEL key could be better positioned, but I guess I'll get used to that. My last two laptops were a Satellite and a Thinkpad, and I'm really missing the trackpoint. This touchpad seems to have a mind of it's own, and it's akwardly placed. Oh well, when I first used it, I couldn't imagine ever missing the stupid little rubber knob in the middle of the keyboard, so I guess I'll get used to this over time as well <lol>. I'm similarly unimpressed with Vista. I set everything to the Classic mode, but everything just isn't everything and some of Vista's "features" are driving me nuts. For example, I finally got it but I had a heck of a time connecting to my home network. Even my son couldn't figure that one out! I may be looking into upgrading to XP again.

Two important factors to me where the ability to see the screen outdoors in full sunlight and battery life to get some work done outdoors while enjoying the full sunlight. The screen is certainly bright enough, although an anti-glare screen would be extremely useful in that regard. I may have to try applying one of those anti-glare sheets to see if that works. And the battery life is respectable, giving about 3 1/2 to 4 hours of run time in balanced mode with the screen at full brightness. The only problem is the darn battery hangs out the back and won't fit in my laptop bag. I guess I'll have to go look for a larger bag.

The size of the screen is absolute heaven for working with documents. I can keep two documents side by side on screen or put Word into two page mode to see more of my document while I'm working on it. Way better than tabbing back and forth. (which of course is a good thing while I'm wrestling with the Touchpad Of Evil <lol>)

Overall, I have to give this thing a 9 out of 10. For the price, it's certainly the best deal I've seen with enough power to meet my needs for years to come.

One reason is it would be just shy of piracy. The Recovery is nothing but a clean install of Vista, so it would violate Microsofts and gateways end use of the software.

Why cant you make your own recovery dics?

What you want is the latest 186.39 drivers for your 9800M GTS. Best drivers yet :)
Uninstall old drivers and run driver sweeper to clear out old drivers, then do a clean install of the 186.39 drivers on laptopvideo2go.com Then get nvidia system tools 6.05 and install ntune, overclock to 716/900/1800 and make sure to lift your laptop off your surface about 2 inches with a couple of little boxes to increase airflow and keep your temperatures down.

    Hope that helps.

Well, I've scoured the whole internet and found no solutions, so maybe someone here has some insight into my network problem.

I have the stock 5100 'n' card in my p7805u. Due to where I need to move my laptop I have to use wireless. I've noticed my connectivity will intermittently become limited or go out, but then pop back in. This is annoying at the very least and detrimental when I'm gaming (you'll see latency shoot way up high, screen appear frozen for a bit, then all of a sudden you are dead).

My other laptops (two dells) work fine, so I know it's not the router (wireless G). Things I have done to remedy this problem:

    1) update to Intel's latest 5100AGN driver - this did not really make much of a difference, except I connect to my network even slower. I reverted back to latest Gateway wireless driver.

    2) changed network configuration like disabling 802.11n and making sure device powersaving is disabled

    3) I don't use WEP or WPA, the only thing I do is not broadcast my router SSID publicly (so I manually enter the SSID). Again this works fine with the Dells, would this be a problem with the 7805?

If anyone have any suggestions I would love to hear it. I'm also thinking of swapping the minicards between the dell and gateway, but I prefer to get things working if it were just some settings that I don't have correct.

"connectivity will intermittently become limited or go out"

This is usually caused by weak signal and/or interference from other G i.e. 2.4 GHz devices in the vicinity.

Since your router is G and not draft N, go to advanced options and select G only i.e. not N protocol. Although N is backward compatible, its new G detection will automatically disconnect N when it senses a G network nearby.

I also found out that the intel 5100 works better with WPA2 and AES encryption.

Vista comes configured with ip v4 and ip v6. Research on the web suggests that running the two sumultaneously can create issues. Go into the 'Network and Sharing Center' and select 'Manage Network Connections'. Then go into properties on the wireless network adaptor and uncheck v6 and reboot. May or may not help but nothing to lose as you can reinstate it by checking it again. Good luck.

Or if you are in the 1 year warranty period, you should be able to call Gateway and have them send you the discs for free.

Quick Question for anyone who plays Grand Theft Auto 4 on this rig.

Do you guys play with at least decent quality/lag? If so, what exact settings do you use? I've owned the game for months now but still cant stomach the fact that I can barely play GTA4 at comfortable settings. I dont even go beyond 800mb/1045mb and it still is choppy from time to time.

This is how GTA 4 runs on my p7805u. As you can see from the vid I'm running on 1920x1080 (not 1920x1200 for HDMI support on my 40" TV) max settings on everything but shadows. Average 25 to 30 fps :)

There are a lot of tweaks to get GTA 4 running well, but most importantly you need to OC your GPU to 716/900/1800. Just make sure to keep the bottom of the laptop lifted or you will overheat. Google nvidia system tools for overclocking utilities.

Haha funny you edited your post 1 minute after mine, and yes I use the same setting while running Oblivion (overclocked). I just started but I run it at max settings 4x anti-aliasing and I haven't dropped below 30 fps yet. I'll post a video about it sometime on youtube.
