if i am to buy one, would anyone care to crash test it in san francisco?
it's just that it's too risky for me if no one will test it since it will be shipped halfway around the world. my friend's a bit of a hollow board when it comes to these things so i'd very much appreciate if someone out there would help me out. thanks a bunch. -
San Fransisco's being overrun by locusts.

someone please help me out because if no one does, i won't be able to get this unit... wah... i really want to have this one and be a contributor to this thread. stress testing and really helping people out with my laptop.
-
Dood. Please quit with the repeat posts. It's really starting to get annoying and the mods aren't going to like it too much.
Moving forward.... Brace yourselves gentleman... I have an exclusive picture of the very first Gateway FX ever built. Due to budget constraints, it never made it out of prototype status, which is a real shame as this machine was extremely powerful and portable with a full array of key switches and LEDs built right on the unit. A permanently attached 12" monochrome tube monitor was later added, making this the very first "gaming laptop computer" in existence. This is your 7811FXs great, great, great, great, great, great, great Grandfather. Gentlemen, I give you..The Gateway P-1000FX:

Man i would straight up trade my 6860 for that thing now...why cant they make super fast tech like that now days
-
aight... so sorry dook... quite desperate here...
-
nice sig, kamin... anyway, just a ratio question... out of 20 gateway laptops, how many of them are lemons based on threads here at notebookreview.com?
-
Kamin_Majere =][= Ordo Hereticus
As to the lemons... i dont know of any that we havent been able to fix for people one way or another on these forums.
Except the one that was trying to kill its owner with mini lightning bolts.. -
lol @ "Except the one that was trying to kill its owner with mini lightning bolts.."
i mean the screen ghostings that some people experienced... and the screen issues... i wouldn't get the opportunity to return the unit to bestbuy so i really need a working unit right off the bat... that's why i need to make sure... i really want this unit but i also need to make sure it's good to go. -

Also remember the problems we see here are just that problems...how many people have bought this notebook and dont have any problems with it. Its rare for them to come seeking help. -
oh...
thanks a lot kamin for the helpful replies... if i'm to ship one over here in the philippines, i'm gonna need someone from this forum to help me out.
thanks also, syngen... thing is, i need this laptop tested before it's brought here and the one who's bringing it here is my uncle... he's in san francisco right now and he's coming over on october... i'm not as worried of the tax as much as i'm worried of the condition of the unit out of the box... i guess i'm willing to pay 50$ to anyone who'll overclock it for me and stress test it so that when my uncle brings it here, it's all set and really ready to go...
twould be a pain in the butt to ship it back to the us from the philippines...halfway around the world is no joke...
kudos to those who are helping me figure this out! two thumbs way way up for you guys. -
@jericcarino - sorry, I missed the point. You need someone to meet your uncle at Fisherman's Wharf, install Crysis and see if green slime oozes through the keyboard. Got it.
I suggest you hit the gay/les section of the forum and set something up.
Alternative:
Your uncle takes the 7811FX into the men's room at the train station (or bus station) and taps his foot under the stall partition. He may find action there.
Hope it helps. -
LOL@Fishermans Warf. I can't stop laughing!

ghosting - is no not a "problem, or at least until about 40 others report same on this board. For now just an isolated incident like a dark pixel. (no I never had that). GW and most mfgs use AAA quality screens (no seconds or gray markets), so you should expect things to work well. My ghosting was large, unlike what I perceived regarding the bottom bleed comments before. BTW the bottom bleed I think is a function of the perimeter clamping of the screen frame. Remember there is an electrically sensitive crystalline fluid beneath the screen so any slightly unbalanced pressure on the screen, misformed or misaligned plastic part, shim, foam piece, insulation, wire, over or under tightened screw, etc. can cause a slight pressure on the back, front or edges of the screen and hence ghosting.
my ghosting could be "wiped" away by using very light pressure on the screen surface using my finger. problem is it always came back - indicative of an errant pressure back pressure from a malformed screen back surface or a folded piece of foil or insulation or a misplaced wire as I said before.
MY ISSUE IS NOTHING BUT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AS FAR AS ANYONE KNOWS. Most of us have enjoyed 100% of our 7811 experience right out of the box. My screen issue took days to observe, fully evaluate and make a decision on. in no way was it a terminal or obvious error during normal function of the machine (start up black screen run time only). Frankly, I am more annoyed that GW sold rights to Norton to put a "nazi" invitation for their norton 360 resource hog, annual blood sucking, antivirus program on their lappys, thank I am that my screen had a ghost spot at start up. AGAIN, if you are going to buy, remember that when you start up the machine and put in your user name for the first time, you will come across this issue. (if you like norton skip to the next paragraph) once the norton splash screen comes up displaying the invitation, you cannot use the machine (cant cancel, or say no thanks), until you click next and agree to at least the first page of the invite. My first action with my new 7811 was to ok nortions trickery invitation screen until i could get to a cancel screen then dump out and go straight to add/ remove and uninstall ALL norton BS and install AVAST for free!
what else can I offer you that is useful...the build quality is very nice. Very nice. very nice. completely consistent with previous GW's. I have personally taken gateways apart til there are no other parts to take apart. this one looks no different - very user friendly - well thought out design - accessible. when they start gluing them together and putting stickers on the outside that say "no user serviceable parts inside" then we'll all know they are disposable junk. not the case here. until then I will expect I can put three or four years on a lappy before it craps out, fails to run what I need or I am sick of it. (that has nothing to do with latest product envy, lust, wife or kid needs a hand me down, etc. which may shorten that cycle. what I dont expect from my equipment is it will be cheaply made, or fail to perform properly, or not be durable - this machine is my third GW lappy in a row - three years each).
Buy it. work with it. 97% means 3% will need repairs or be defective on delivery. accept it. you will in all probably most likely be in the 97% and not in the 3% group.
HAVE FUN! -
@syngen
oh... actually man, i'm pretty serious about this laptop and as provoking as your reply might be, i really need help with making sure the laptop is running and will continue to run once it reaches me here in the philippines. as witty as you think your comment is, it is out of line. you may be smart and all in these forums but i think your "gaydar" needs recalibration. -
- otherwise it would be 5.4 - limited by the hdd transfer speed, otherwise all other scores are 5.9.
A: YES, BETTER. -

Someone brought the forum to it's knees. Don't take that the wrong way ... I'm in enough trouble already.

Is this some new way to increase our post counts?

Does anyone here still have the folder "C:\ACER" still intact on their notebook? I think this is used for the driver recovery. I tried to do a driver recovery and it said they don't exist. Sadly like a dumb a$$ I deleted it think it would free space and I was also not counting on the drivers not being available on the website. I have since downloaded the audio drivers from this thread but I think it would come in handy to have that directory available. I'm not sure reloading the operating system with the supplied disc will reload this directory either. Don't want to blow away all the stuff I've already loaded.

Laptop exchanged, ran Wow all night and well into this morning, warm as a beast but rock solid. No lockups yet!

I seem to have encountered a problem with the latpop and cannot figure it out. when I dont have my laptop in and charging while i try to game, its almost as if im not getting enough power in games like cod4 and gears, the video card doesnt get hot and i get horrible fps. then when i plug in the charger and play everything is back to normal? any ideas.. im stumped
-
Sounds like you need to check your power manager profile...
-
-
yea its set to high performance atm
-
could it be a virus or something driver related you think?
-
This is normal activity. nVidia powermeizer kicks in and limits FPS for better battery life. Theres a way to disable this, just google it. However, I do NOT recommend this. Why are you gaming on battery anyway?
-
this is easy my friend, even if its at max performance, when its on battery vista is configured to run in low video card and processor.
go to power options and click on change plan settings, then change advanced settings. u should be looking for processor and video card, pump up the min rate in battery to 100% and the video card as well.
hope this one helps -
Hate me or not. I'm a vista hater.
You wouldn't have this question if you were using XP -
i remember xp was hated in it begginnings too
or am i drugged?
-
-
I don't want to hijack this thread but...
Unfortunately I wasn't a computer user until 2003 so vista is the 1st os released in my time. -
1. someone experienced screen ghosting again?
2. wow! that's efficient! power management by vista to make your battery last longer. new trivia learned. i'm definitely getting vista on my machine. -
It's not Vista. It's the nVidia powermizer software and it's supposed to do this. Changing the power plan will not help.
-
So gaming on battery isn't efficient? Will it be a huge problem?
The whole reason I want a laptop and not a desktop is so I can game in different rooms of the house. I guess I can always plug it in but I'd like to know what kind of handicaps I'll have beforehand.
I've never gamed on a laptop before. -
No and maybe. Like I said earlier it can be bypassed and you can get full frame rates on battery. But only being able to play for 45minutes at a time kinda defeats the purpose.
