Perfectly fine idea. There have been known cases of some issues, so make sure if you get it you test it thoroughly within the 14 day return period to verify it's working correctly. If you have any issues, my advice is to return it for a replacement.

    Good luck...

A dead pixel, maybe ghosting. Nothing that doesn't fall under Best Buy's 14 day no hassle replacement policy.

People seem to have trouble finding the original drivers. If you have the factory install copy the driver folder to a safe place before you trash the install.

    Backup Drivers:
    Located at C:\ACER\DRV
copy the DRV folder to a safe location.
While there grab the Gateway user guides and save them.

Exactly. Lockups, pixel and ghosting issues. The lockups have normally been fixed by driver updates, the ghosting and pixel issues require a replacement by Best Buy. Should be fine within 14 days of purchase, just make sure you do it right away and don't "make do" with one you don't feel is perfect... ;)

Hello, I am the proud owner of a P-7811FX, however I allready made a mess!
I formated the PC thinking that all the drivers were in the OS backup CD, If you could help me I would be very gratefull, I need all the drivers to put my laptop has it was, or at least give me some of the powerfull stuff I have available.
If some kind soul could post a list of all the drivers I need, I would apreciate it.

P.S. - Sorry for my english.
    Thanks

    Hi guys!

I purchased a P7811FX a few days ago and have been pretty impressed with it so far. I upgraded from a HP dv2500t and the P7811FX is (obviously) a lot more capable at TF2.

The only annoyance I've encountered so far is that the left side fan throttles up and down CONSTANTLY during very light use and it's likely to drive me insane if I can't figure out how to stop it from doing that. It sounds like a 3 year-old has gotten ahold of a knob and is just turning it up and down all day long. Is this normal?

It's not spinning up to full speed, because I'm not doing anything that should cause the laptop to generate too much heat. I'm sure there is a sensor in there that monitors system temperature and throttles the fan up if it gets too hot. I can only assume that it is ramping up the fan to cool it off for a second and then detecting that it can throttle back, but then heats up again a second later.

Or maybe there's some other cause. All I know is that I'm tempted to take this one back to the store. I looked in the BIOS and couldn't find any settings for fan control. I wouldn't mind if the fan was kept at either the fast or slow speed that it's alternating between, just as long as it picked one. Any thoughts?

You could always look into a program such as FanSpeed to control your fans. I haven't tried.. I know that certain temps set the fans spinning in order to cool. That would be the least of my worries..unless the fan never came on. Unlike the HP, the exhaust fans on the 7811FX are high speed, and move a lot of air. I rarely ever heard my HP fan, which would also explain why it would get so darned hot. If your fan is spinning, it's a good thing. If you can hear it, then you know it's really working hard for ya. Maybe it's just me..but I don't even pay attention to it anymore..it's just an ambient noise. :)

good news: everyone with gateway p7811fx

i just find out a way to get rid of all the blue screens and freezes during gaming. i installed vista x64 comes with laptop purchase on 2nd hd, then installed the drivers--only intel wifi driver & nvidia graphics.
TWO hours straight gaming w/o a problem, and comp runs very cool with a 4 inch fan blowing on the left side-gpu side. much cooler than xps1730.
i havent installed any other drivers, but believe its the intel drivers casuing the bsod, pm45 chipset & vga. i couldnt even find those drivers on intel website, dont know how gateway made those drivers for p7811.

SleepyD, it is the gpu fan that kicks in at around 46 then slows until high 30's. Keeps your GPU nice a cool. I'm so happy this thing has 2 fans and they actually do something. I love the cooling in this laptop.

Not trying to tell you it isn't irritating but is less so when you know what it is doing. I actually don't find it at all irritating but some may.

also, can we overclock the cpu 2.26 with cpu-z, clockgen?
i'd be satisfied with 2.53ghz overclokced,
a slight increase but no need to buy another cpu.

LOL - Reminds me of the old days (not so old) when "enhanced" motherboard drivers screwed everything up. Sometimes old MicroShaft is best after all.

So this may be fix #3?

Thank you Syngensmyth and E-Wrecked for the response. I'm not certain my question was 100% clear, so I'll try again.

During light usage (e.g. browsing the web) the fan on the left of the computer is PULSING. As in speeding up and slowing down every second and a half. That can't be normal behavior. If it needs to cool something down, the fan should just speed up to higher RPM for a few minutes or so, not speed up and slow down every second.

Can I assume that your laptops don't do the same thing?

No. The PLL is unknown ATM.

Good lord don't I remember those. Remember the old intel Triton chipset that was supposed to be the shiz, yet had more problems than GWB?

You assume correctly. Run HWMonitor and watch the GPU temps. They should correspond to your fan activity. Maybe you have a heat issue.

My favorite recommendations ... do not install the (xyz) driver but install (this) driver. We have it too easy, people are spoiled. I walked 6 miles to school every day ... uphill both ways (in winter). :p

Well, after updating Video Card Drivers and Disabling Hibernate, I am still getting random lockups in games  . So far today I have had random hard locks in both WOW and Bioshock. This is quite annoying as I it happens completly randomly. I have played games for over two hours straight with no problems only to have them lock up within 5 mins the next time around.

Following E-wrecked's advice I checked the Computer Management log and the only log it has is a Disruptive Shutdown note that is from me manually powering off the system.

nomoredell suggested reinstalling Vista which I would rather not do due to the fact that I am non to eager to re-install all of my games and redo everything on a week old computer.

I am hoping that it is just a driver issue. I just installed the nvidia 177.92 drivers earlier today from
    http://laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=20271
And have since experienced lockups in both Bioshock and WoW.

I could try the 177.85 drivers as maybe those are more stable? Anyone have any thoughts between the two drivers?

First of all they are better performing. E-wrecked shows bench proof and I found the same.

I have no proof of stability but E has not had lock ups with it.
Worth a try and being they perform better, why not?

if ur serious, just try that, wouldnt take more than 30 mins to install vistax64 os and two drivers only. just put in a spare hard drive.
now is 4 hours free of problems, no bsod, no freeze, no crash.

my system passed all prime95 tests, ofc it could only be software problem=
    faulty drivers.

can narsanil put my method into officail p7811 info thread, this is proven method.

Personally, I don't recommend re-installing Vista. That's my 2 cents. I did a clean install on the previous 7811fx and it locked up almost immediately, well after I posted saying it had never locked up. Literally, 10 minutes after. Maybe that's the key...you can't type the words "l0ck3d up". Or, you can't brag about your stability. Shhhh.. it may hear you. Anyhow, the 177.85 video drivers seem nice and stable, so far. They also give good performance boosts. If you have no WMI error, then congrats.. I envy you. There are a lot of people on here thinking they have resolved something, and love to share their advice. I disabled hibernate, the WMI crap, and my video driver..no problems here. But, that's just me. Depending on what type of error you receive, then it's locking for different reasons(obviously). If there were a forum *light bulb bling*, that everyone could just post their lock-up error codes..not just to complain about locking up..but why/how/what/error reported type of info..and then they could be resolved. *shrugs* No need to complain about it, just fix it. :)

I mostly get lockups during ALT, TABBING out of a game or worst the game crash flashes on me and I can't even sometimes use task manager to smack it down. Because it flashes back to the game, then out of it again.

I ended up still getting that free game, even though I bought mine 14 dys ago. Just call customer support and they will arrange everything for you.

Hi guys, I'm a happy (really really happy) new owner of the 7811 and I wanted to ask 2 questions (since I couldn't find the topics, and I saw them like 5 days ago):

    1. What software do you guys recommend me to delete off the 7811 to keep it with the less crap as plausible? I know there is a topic about it, but I can't find it... =/

    2. Should I move to Vista 32bits? If so, what programs should I keep from Vista 64bits?

    3. What does the CD that Gateway gives you come with? Only Vista 32 and 64 bits?

    4. Any recommendations besides Bios and Graphic Card Updates?

Anyways, thanks for the help in advance.

Hey Darkaoz, id recommend keeping vista 64bit, although some people may say otherwise. Windows 32bit only see's a maximum of 3.3gb or ram. where as 64bit see's all 4gb wich is a bit of a help(wether is actually uses it all is another story lol, but least your ready if it does). with the deletion of programs. id say wipe almost all the non essentials off it (as if you had just done a clean install) for an anti virus ive heard of Avast antivirus. my self. i use free AVG 8.0 antivirus, works a charm. There is a new bios for the gateway (go to the gateway support page to find it) but youll want to be pretty smart computer wise to install it. im using all the default drivers and they seem to work fine (even the video card drivers, although other people have pretty good luck over clocking with certain drivers, ive heard 177.41 are pretty stable)

On another note. my antec cooling pad finnaly arrived. I havent had one lock up with it. my HDD's cooled down from 60'c + to
    5,400rpm = 48'c under load
    7,200 = 54'c under load
made a big difference so was well worth the $20 i paid for it.
now that the laptop is working fine im enjoying it much better then i was when i first got it.

sounds like it could be more of a problem with WoW. i have a m1730 also and dont experience it. have you tired reinstalling WoW? if not that it could be a matter of the drivers. i cant recommend any as most from laptopvideo2go
dont work to well on my m1730 (sli'd 8700m gt video cards)
but its more a thing of trial and error to wich work best, id say the 177.92 would be the best place to start

24 hours passed without a single incident, no blue screen, no freeze.
this is on my own hard drive though.
on the hard drive gateway shipped factory default
, system still blue screens then restarts every 30 mins.

i wont be coming to p7811 thread from now, since my unit is all good.
    much relieved .

Hmm.. I've considered the sager..but after seeing how my benchies smoke the ones Ive seen on here, I'm quite satisfied saving the money. The 9800m GT actually doesn't allow OC'ing as high as the GTS :) And the GTX, based on the previous GTX core likely doesn't either. I'm content saving $1000 and smokin' some Sager-@SS :)

EDIT: Actually, the total would come to $3259.98 for the same CPU as mine, same HDD space and performance, but a GT instead. However, I did forfeit bluetooth and a finger reader with the 7811

    1 Gateway P-7811FX - $1249 (and a complimentary $50 game)
    1 x9100 CPU - $1000
    2 WD Scorpio 320 GB 7200RPM Black HDDs - $200
    Smoking a "high-end" Sager.. Priceless.
