@E=MC2 - how hot do your Scorpio's run? You prob have post but resist reading 110 pages again.
Wow that CPU is expensive!!!!!
-
-
to inform u all, the cause of bsod, restart every 30mins is
faulty intel chipset driver.
got a bsod rit after installed this factory default driver. -
nomoredell, it would be interesting to see if removing that driver clears up the issue. Then it would give more proof to it being the chipset driver and not just coincidence. Keep us posted...

Im hopin' I'm MC2The scorpio's run great..highly recommend them. Bumped (lamest benchmark ever)WEI to 5.7, and I couldn't be happier. I thought they ran a *bit* warm sometimes, but after seeing other users Seagate temps, I think mine run cooler.
QUIET as can be, ya never hear them spin up or down.. I went for the ones without the g-force protection, or whatever it's called. I dont intend to drop my laptop anytime soon. It rarely leaves my coffee table. But, the Black Model, they're sweet.
And yes, this is an *expensive* CPU. I got it less than a week after release..and it's STILL the same price. Eh.. I'm considering buying the new qx9300, but concerned the BIOS wont recognize it. Waiting for the release of it to do more research.
By the way..this is the lamest computer ever:
http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop...gn=email,MWBgooglebase&wt.mc_id=MWBgooglebase
It has a qx9300? And XP? and DDR2? And the GPU? And the HD? What the he11? -
Hey guys, welp I got my AW sold and picking up a Gateway 7811 this Friday. Got my wife the 6830 or whichever one it is.
Just a quick question, I'd like to get a faster cpu and willing to spend about 500 bones, anyone got any good recommendations? -
7811...P9500 maybe? or if you can find an X9100 for cheap...but good luck with that one.
6860...T9300 provides a good $/performance ratio. but so does an X9000 if you find it for the right price. -
For the 7811. I'll have to check out those cpu's you mentioned, than you
-
BTW, check out this thread at the [H]:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1344472
Dunno if that will help any of the 7811 lockup issues, but it's worth a try... -
I had my first lock up. It came after I installed the driver for a Razor Copperhead USB mouse. When I turned off the "on the fly" features no more lockup.
I only mention this to add detail to the issues. If we get enough fix incidents maybe we can zero in on the issue. For instance on the Everex XT5000T some users would lock up/black screen. This was fixed for some was swapping out the wifi card for another that handled the buses differently. XP32 did not have these same issues ($30).
There must be some hardware/driver combo that is causing the locks. Posters should give as much detail as possible when discussing their lock up issues. Hopefully it is not some weakness in the basic motherboard and or soldered on video card.
It would be interesting if someone with the locking problems would take a different drive and clean install XP32. -
im a lil bit depressed after seeing that wled lcd screen on dell studio 15.
how do u ppl like this tft, non glossy lcd on p7811? -
Define glossy??? -
It's not glossy? Weird, I can totally use it as a mirror when the screen is off.

Now in bios have RAID option?? or kepping without ??
I prey for have.. i dream in make a RAID 0 in my Gateway P-7811 FX hehehe
tks guys -
You're joking, right?
-
no... i was talk to Gateway support time ago, and he say, in next bios updated that problem gonna be fix...
-
No Gateway have RAID in new BIOS maybe.

do NOT get that bios
-
i dont get... now i understand.. my gateway model dont suport raid mode... not ICH8 intel chipset.. ;/ ****
just update video driver )
tks -
hi, i want to replace my gateway p7811 lcd screen with dell studio 17's wled
lcd? do u think i can keep the brightness of studio 17's in a gateway comp? -
-
Hey everyone!
Did anyone ever figure out the problem flowah was having (post #404, page 41). Im having the same problem; with every restart my audio drivers switch from HD Audio to the conexant audio drivers. The side effect is that on every other restart my on board microphone will be totally unrecognized by windows. Im using the default vista 64 bit install.
~PerfectSine -
audio drivers switch from HD Audio to the conexant audio drivers my comp does the samw thing even though i dont have drivers installed on both vista x32 and x64.

-
any good usb tv tuner & fm radio and pci express sound card can be added to this 17 monster? thx in advance!
-
They generate a ton of heat, I would use a USB external one. Amazon has tons of them. Hauppage's tend to get the best customer reviews, and there are a few of them, so you'll need to do some reading.
-
edit### wrong thread posting
-
We're talking about internal t.v. cards here, not hard disks.
-
Can anyone recommend a good external sound adapter for 5.1 surround sound? The one I bought doesn't have 64-bit Vista drivers so apparently it's only giving me extra audio output/headphone/mic ports and I'm forced to use simulated "matrix" 5.1 rather than true 5.1 audio.

Re: Fix for P-7811FX apparent freeze, halt, hang
Hypothesis: Unpowered USB devices can draw too much power from the computer's USB ports and cause it to freeze.
Solution: Recommend using only powered USB devices on this notebook. "Powered" means the device has a power cord separate from the USB cable. Consider connecting unpowered USB devices to a powered USB hub, and connect the hub to the computer.
Platform: Windows Vista 64-bit, as configured from Gateway, with the Nvidia driver update applied, and E-Wrecked fixes applied - see pp. 100 and 103); powered D-Link 4-port USB hub.
Observations:
1) Logitech Wave cordless USB keyboard and mouse: plug the receiver into a USB port on the P-7811FX; move the mouse, and the computer freezes randomly - not always, but way too much, especially if another USB device is active. Problem does not appear to occur if the same receiver is plugged into a powered USB hub.
2) Western Digital 1 TB My Book external hard drive: the USB port on this device appears to be powered by the computer. Moving data to and from the external drive using the laptop causes a freeze reliably in less than 10 minutes. Plug the external drive into a powered USB hub, and the freezing incidents are reduced dramatically.
2.1) USB hubs can "reserve" bandwidth for each device attached. Attach just one device to the hub, and it gets the full bandwidth available to the hub. Attach two devices, and each is assigned 50% of the bandwidth - even if one of the two devices isn't doing much, the other device will only get 50% of the bandwidth. Attach three devices, and the first gets 50%, the 2nd and 3rd get 25%. With four devices, it is 50, 25, 12.5 and 12.5%.
So... to attach two external drives to the computer, consider using two powered USB hubs.
2.2) The P-1178FX has 8 USB 2.0 ports, 3 of them externally available. It would appear all 8 are one single USB bus - the hardware device manager indicates 6 ports are "reserved" 10% of the bandwidth and 2 are "reserved" 20% of the bandwidth (6*10% + 2*20% = 100%). After some experimentation, I think the USB ports on the back left of the computer are the two higher bandwidth ports, and the port on the right is one of the lower bandwidth ports (not entirely certain, my experiments were not thorough).
2.3) Western Digital "My Book" series of external drives were not compatible with Vista until fairly recently. Using one of these non-compatible drives according to postings on the web, causes the computer to freeze. Mine are newer, and do not appear to have this problem. WD just posted a software update for My Book drives, FYI.
3) Because the P-7811FX appears to be sensitive to heavy power usage, consider stopping and/or disabling unnecessary Vista processes. http://www.blackviper.com/winvista/servicecfg.htm has a very good guide on what processes are not necessary - and under what conditions and uses. In my opinion, the following processes generate fairly heavy loads at random times, and contribute to the instability of the P-7811FX: SuperFetch, Symantec LiveUpdate (scheduled - it runs 15 minutes after booting, and every 4 hrs after) - run LiveUpdate manually when you're not doing critical things.
4) ReadyBoost - Stick a USB flash memory stick into the computer, and Vista offers to put a paging file on it *if* the stick is faster than the hard drive. Given that the USB bus is sensitive to power loading, and memory sticks are generally unpowered, and paging files are generally in constant use, I'd recommend turning off ReadyBoost for this computer.
5) Recommend strongly against using unpowered USB hubs on this computer.
Your mileage may vary, best of luck. -
good post, welcome
-
Around, great post..and I agree. Ive noticed issues with my iphone not charging properly when my USB hub is linked. The hub is self-powered as well.. just checked my error logs and it has been giving me USB errors consistently. *shrugs* Only one blue screen in one week..and it was a memory/power level error.
-
Thanks for the tips, Around. I use WD external hard drives all the time, including some that are years old. Now I'll be sure to connect them via a powered USB hub.

just checked Bestbuy onlne, gateway p7811 is on backorder, currently out of stock . also checked preferred store, there is still 1 store (out of 6 ) has some on stock in new york city.
surprisingly popular! -
Re: Multiple failed P-7811FX units
Hypothesis: Quality control on the parts and assembly of the P-7811FX is low, resulting in significant unit-to-unit performance variation. When such variations exist in the power or thermal regulation circuitry, then the affected unit is likely demonstrate poor performance (e.g., hanging) and/or failure. This may explain the failures apparently related to USB loading (and heavy RAM use? - not sure on this one), and higher-than-expected temperature readings.
Observations:
1) My first unit randomly hung - even just sitting "idle." No consistent reason, although doing certain things (e.g., loading up the USB ports) aggravated the rate of hanging. This unit was well-cooled: the highest temp (CPU, GPU, etc.) recorded was 46 deg C. This unit was returned and replaced.
2) My second unit had a screen failure 5 minutes into operation - Windows had not even finished configuring itself before the screen flickered and displayed eight wide bars of white and light gray. This appeared permanent. Unit was plugged into a monitored high-quality power conditioner / UPC, and the logs on the UPC show no anomalies. This unit also had the backlight bleeding through onto the lower edge of the screen in an obnoxious way. The power key also jammed frequently. This unit was returned and replaced.
3) My third unit (from the same batch as #2) appears to be working correctly so far.
4) Having been to many Best Buy stores, I have observed that several of the keys are missing on the P-7811FX units on display in ALL of the stores observed. This was not the case on any other units on display. It would appear the keys are prone to coming off.
Sarcastic Idea: A reason so many Best Buy stores are out of stock on this unit is that customers have to go through several units to find one that works.
Another Idea: The price on this unit is relatively low. So, in one sense, you get what you pay for. It does not appear to be a high-quality unit.
Recommendation: If your P-7811FX malfunctions, take it back within 14 days to Best Buy and have it replaced or refunded. To have it replaced free of charge, the Geek Squad in the store will have to replicate the error - so be ready support your claim with evidence. Unsupported claims result in a 15% restocking fee - about $150-200.
Good luck - it would appear you will need it. -
I found the display unit in the Best Buy I went to missing a key from the keyboard too.
I have a tiny bit of light seeping through from the bottom of the screen, but it is so small that unless viewing a black background at night with all the lights turned out, it is invisible. I was watching a few movies on it last night, and didn't even notice it. Considering that the unit seems to be very strong except for that tiny fault I can virtually never see, I'm going to keep it. If I saw it all the time or if the bloom were larger, I wouldn't hesitate to trade it in though. -
Coming up on Day 14 of the second unit, it appears to be working alright, aside from needing me to maybe upgrade the video driver. The network driver errors are still popping up, although primarily when I'm doing heavy torrenting and/or file downloads-I really wish there were some fix for it.
I recently tried out Silent Hill 3 on max settings and there was some slow-down (I might use FRAPs to get the actual frame rates), this may be fixed again by upgrading the video card drivers.
I'm planning on getting the Galaxy Edition of Spore this Thursday when I get paid. Anyone know if it's a fun game and/or if it runs well on this laptop (the CPU could be an issue)? -
Seems I'm wrong: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132004
It's cheaper elsewhere by about ten bucks, but you really have to dig for that. -
After reading through this informative and a bit amusing thread I think I am sold on it. I originally wanted a 15", and still do, but the amount of hardware in this thing is amazing for the price. Plus it appears to have far less issues than the other two I was considering(HP dv5t and Asus G50V-X1). I think I am going to hold out for a couple more weeks and see if I can catch it on sale.

Front, Rear, and Center
They are the same size jacks that are used for headphones and microphone. I need this in order to properly connect my Logitech speaker system. -
Speaking of drivers.. sorry if this is the wrong place to ask as I am new here.. but I was reading the nvidia driver guide on this forum and I saw a lot of people using different versions of the drivers and not necessarily the newest version. Is there a version that people with the 7811 find works best? -
The driver in my signature is good and OC's well. No need for separate mod inf. file.

Hey, new here,
I'm torn between this model and the previous one (6860FX) resolution wise. I know the 7811FX is unquestionably superior on paper. However, being a gaming laptop, I worry that it wouldn't be able to handle it properly with games.
Does anyone have any input on this? Would playing at a lower res on this one look worse than native on the 6860FX? -
Kamin_Majere =][= Ordo Hereticus
I'm eventually going to upgrade my screen to the 1920x1200, but i am one of the few that doesnt mind the screen turning just a bit fuzzy when playing at non native resolution.
Though in truth you can play alot of games at 1920x1200 with out to much problem, its just the higher requirement games tend to slag fown to single digit fps rates at times.
It really comes down to what you can live with and what you want. 1440x900 is plenty of screen for most people, but if you want full HD experiance then 1920x1200 is deffinatly the way to go. if your just getting the laptop for gaming...then i would honestly get the 6860 because the screen size is ALOT friendlier to the GPU. The 1920x1200 screen is alot better for working on multipule documents and multitasking more so than gaming (with out a true high end card)
