I'm no big gamer, but Company of Heroes is down right beautiful at 1920 or 1440 on the 7811. I like 1440 because I can read stuff :) Only one I've played so far but I think the resolution issue is over stated by people who don't actually have the experience. Poisonal Opinion.

intel 5100 wireless drops signal quite often, its real surprise to see even intel makes subpar quality product, ofc exclude intel integrated graphics.

    Alright getting desperate...

I have a new P-7811FX laptop that I bought for gaming. After all the initial setup, I've installed a MMORPG game (playrohan.com) and started playing it. First couple of sessions went great, no freeze or nothing, played over 4-5 hrs straight sessions.

Then I started to get freezes randomly about each 20-90 mins. I went to update the drivers for the video card with the package found for my P7811 at gateway.com. This didn't solve anything, it even worsten it as I now freeze every 10-15 mins (I only freeze playing games, I have no issue with softer computer use).

I searched online and found here other people having proplems and they fixed it with disabeling the hibernate mode in vista. I did that ( http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_can_I_disable_hibernate_in_vista). I also tried the fix #2 in E-wrecked's post in page #100 (trying to deleate the files I got 4 that I coudn't deleate because they where in use... is that normal?).

It didn't solve anything. I installed HWMonitor to check temperatures and when freezing my video card is about at 61ºC and the rest is bellow 50-55ºC. I though maybe it was an issue with the game, so I installed 3DMarks06 to check graphics capacity and in froze after about 1 min. I ran it again and froze at the exact same frame (the frame where the tank falls on the leftover soldier).

    Is there anything to do?

Also I would like to note that then I was unpacked my computer I droped it on the floor. It cracked that casing neer the modem port in the back but everything seemed to be working fine. Screen was A1 and I was able to play for 4-5hrs sessions afterwards. Could that be why it's always freezing in games now?

    Please help!

Could have probably knocked something loose and after gaming, the heat made it worse. Kind of like the XBOX 360 issues. Where if the XBOX 360 ran for so long, it would "warp" the PCB board, causing the heatsink to lose contact, and therefore giving you the RRoD. Whereas, with the laptop, it's not over heating, but could possibly be something else. Like I said, you might have damaged the PCB board and after gaming, the heat added onto the PCB board, therefore damaging it. Just my $.02.

    Thanks for your input.

Is there a way to find out if it's hardware or software problems? Would there be any logical hardware that would be used after 1:10 min of 3DMarks06 or that would kick in after 10-15 mins of gaming? I find it very peculiar that I freeze at the exact same frame on 3DMarks06.

Would a computer service store be able to help me / repair this?

Don't remember, perhaps someone else can shed some light on this, but I believe it's quite simple to remove the whole back cover and have a look. Check for something that it is out of the ordinary. It is possible that you could take it to a computer service store to have it repaired, but it would more than likely void your warranty with Gateway.

At work, so I don't have time to search for the posts, but I've posted two possible solutions. The first is a MS patch for Vista SP1 that helps with stability in games with nvidia based systems and the second is a specific nvidia driver that can be used that seems to help a lot of people. If you find those posts you have a couple other things to try that may help...

i ve posted solution for freezeup b4, the laptop i got from bb rit out of box had blue screens every 15-30 mins, erratic fan, overheat.

the problem is the faulty intel drivers, intel chipset/intel ahci/intel vga uma.
just made a drivers cd from gateway recovery console, then reinstall vista x64,dont autorun drivers cd, install them one by one, i only have inel 5100 & nvidia 9800m gts drivers installed on my hard drive.

Why lower resolution to read? Do a control panel search in Vista for "DPI" and just bring that up. No need to lower res to read.

I'll try that tonite. I was wontering if I should re-install vista.

Oh, a couple of questions. Did you have to get new intel drivers (where should I find those if need be)? or did you just use those from the recovery CD?

Also, where you blue screening and freezing everywhere or just in games as well?

    Thanks

I'll also try to look-up wtburnett's solutions. I'm at work too and not on the 7811 so I'll have to try a bit later.

I think he is only installing the 5100 wireless & video drivers. Everything else is generic Vista. Don't know what he is doing about sound? These drivers are available on your HD in Acer/DVR.

That will work for vista itself, but i dont believe that will cure in game text issues. Which tend to be microscopic on a 17in 1920x1200 screen. At 22inches its not a big issue but the lessened real estate we have it can be a pain to most people.

I still say 1440x900 is superior for gaming in a 17in environment. But 1920x1200 in applications that benifit from the increased DPI that vista offers is a true blessing if your multitasking heavily between multipule documents and applications

I have to try some of my older games that I'm more familiar with at native 1440.
Maybe I'm just not that picky but things look really good at 1440 on 7811 to me.

That's the thing though. I've never had a single issue besides gaming and 3d06. And even then it was after several days and after several sessions of 4-5hrs of trouble free gaming.

I'll try some solutions listed here first tonite (reinstall Vista, ...) but if that doesn't work, I can still bring it back tomorrow (14 days after my purchase)

I am using 176.15 Nvidia drivers, just went with what is on the Gateway site.

Which would you recommend or is there a better one out there?

Also what version of the intel chipset are you using. I have had no freezes really.

    I am on 8.7.0.1007

At least gateway has finally updated drivers for both 64bit and 32bit vista, this should have been done before or on release.

I'm downloading the 176.15 drivers right now...I'm one of those people who won't update any drivers unless they are recommended by the manufacturer. I'm also going to download the new 12.0.0.73 Wireless Intel driver that was released two days ago. Both are provided on the Gateway website if anybody was wondering.

alright... I got my p-7811fx a couple days ago. very excited. by far the best rig ive ever owned. I got 10% off for a single dead pixel too! I am having one problem however... I keep calling gateway and talking to them online hoping that i get someone that knows wha they are talking about. My headphone jack wont workk. First I was told to uninstall the high definition audio in the device manager and leave the NVIDIA, shut down wait 30 seconds and turnn it back on... it worked! upon the next restart my computer automatically reinstalled the high def audio and I was again stuck with my computer speakers. Next I talked to a gateway tech online and he had me reinstall the conexant audio v 4.57.0.50 (well i figured it out my****self he was an *******). This works, but only until my next shut down and restart. So now i just leave the high def audio in the device manager and upgrade it through gateway recovery management every freakin time. what should I do!? also I have not modified this computer at all yet. I dont know what i should do to have the latest dirvers or whatever. Everything else seems to wrok fine though. I do play Counterstrike source online quite often so max FPS is essential... anyone know anything about tweakin this or my 9800m gfx card? I got to page 50 or somethin in this thread but Have a long way to go, amybe I should go backwards... in the meantime can anyone help me. I can generally fix my computers witha little direction but i need that push. Thanks techy's! best buy geeks suck! woot woot!

there is a easier way to do this, go to control panel--sound, then plug in your
headphone, select headphone default, click ok, then u can use the headphone.
but it doesnt solve the problem.

I was somewhat joking but not completely. Sometimes there are drivers that are superior to what the OEM offers, especially as time goes on. Stubbornly insisting on using only manufacturer's drivers is less than optimal IMHO. But hey, it's yours ... do what you please.

I would not give a first thought to warranty and drivers.

To prove I'm not totally reckless ... Don't use your laptop while swimming.

Which one are you using for your card.

Hey guys, how well does the 7811 panel handle resolution scaling.

i.e. if I play Crysis at 1280x800 how terrible does it look?

Toshiba had some panels a few years back that were awesome at doing this.

i bought an avermedia tv tuner on ebay for $25,
now my comp goes into blue screens whenever i disconnect the usb tv tuner. anyway, video quality is just wow, unbelievable good on 1600x1200 display, much better than my old tv in the living room.

i also tried crysis and oblivion on native res 1900x1200, look fine except crysis is a bit sluggish.

    Hi,

Anyone know if the P7811 FX motherboard controller is SATA 1 or SATA 3?

2 years ago when SATA first came out for desktops/workstations you needed to install/remove a jumper so SATA HD's were set for SATA 1 or SATA 3 depending on your controller. Now all HD's will operate at whatever speed the controller runs and the jumper is for enterprise drives in servers.

Existing P7811 FX 200GB SATA drive has a jumper installed. Shall I install a jumper on the 2 new 320GB SATA's I'm going to install or not? I thought we did not use them anymore...................Raymond

The drives I see are 1.5 with jumper on and 3 with jumper off. I just pull them and the test numbers are higher. Most say there is no real world difference but I do it anyway.

Oh and I'm sure the 7811 is SATAII

    Cool, thanks.

Know this isn't a vista forum, but have you tried ready boost?

Think I can run a 4" or 12" USB 2.0 extension cable to conect a ready boost compatible drive to the P7811 FX. I'm thinking of attaching it to the top of the battery with velcro and keeping it plugged in all the time. Not sure if it must plug in directly or if you can use a short connecting cable?

Not a gamer but a photoshopper and this is my first vista and first 64x unit................Raymond

I've never run ready boost but don't see any reason against an extension cable. There would be no power issue unless you are talking some kind of USB HD.

So to my surprise I was able to get my 7811 one day early :D. A few quick questions though.

    1) I only booted my laptop 3 times, first time nothing was wrong but the second time I booted my power brick was sizzling a little... but it was more like a little static or something. Would the brick cause any problems later on? Is it dangerous to use a sizzling powerbrick?

    2) So far I have 1 dead pixel and nothing else, I haven't had it freeze (yet) after 4 gaming sessions of DMC4 and Crysis (only like 45 mins a session though. My CPU is idling at 27c and gpu is idling at 37c. Right after gaming I opeded HW monitor and my gpu maxed at 67 and cpu maxed at 32 (I think). Would it be safe to assume I didn't get a lemon?

I have to say though I LOVE this laptop. My dekstop was a single core 2.66ghz, 1 gig ram, radeon 9800pro and going from that to this is like... can't even explain.

Hmm before I send this I hear my left fan in the back pulsing, I remmeber seeing a topic about that but never got a chance to read that, is it something I should be concerned about?

Mine is quiet and cool but some do "sizzle" and run hot. I've heard Gateway is easy to replace these free so far if you want to bother. You may wish to buy a Targus brick replacement of superior build and power anyway. I got one for 36 bucks just in case. The Gateway replacement is too expensive to justify buying.

If the dead pixel doesn't bother you, it sounds like a nice cool unit.

The fan does a little pulse dance, that is normal. One guy explained some constant pulsing and running and that is not normal but sounds like yours is fine. I suspect he had heat issues causing the constant operation. Many are alarmed that the left fan starts so fast with the "woosh" but it is brief and you get accustomed to it.

Oh one more thing I forgot to mention. It's prolly driver related but as I'm on 56k atm I can't get the new driver asap. But when I try to run DMC4 in DX10 I get inverted colors. However I can run it in DX9 without any problem at all. Can you confirm iif it is indeed a driver issue?
