    Hmm....looks like it's MIA on the 7811FX.
It shows up in the specs, and component list on the 6860FX, but NOT on the specs or component list on the 7811FX.

Wow - we actually found something on the 11FX that was downgraded!

I like this p7811fx a lot... in fact im asking my girlfriend (she will be in la by august 14th) to buy it. However, im a little bit concerned about the cpu.... isn`t 2.20 ghz a little bit slow?
    thanks for the help.
    pd excuse my poor english

Nope the 2.20ghz cpu is not slow at all , also consider the first fx retail models had 1.6 and 1.8 ghz cpus and many thought that to be fast enough for what they were doing. Buy it run all your games apps etc and if its still not fast enough you can always buy another processor and toss it in there in 10 minutes or so cause of its easy access .

So whats all upgradeable? Cpu, ram, hard drive, what else? Is the graphics card upgradable? How about the optical drive? I am just asking about the graphics card for the future, this thing has to last 4 years, lol.

No the GPU is about the only thing thats non-upgradeable. Everything else such as cpu, memory, hd (raid if desired), screen, optical, etc is fair game.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. Is there an option to have a gloss screen or is it going to be matte  matte is becoming out dated I think...

Also, so I'm guessing Sli is out of the question, lol

The current screen is gloss, there really is no other option. And yes, It's supposedly going to look like the current FX line.

I noticed that you have the P-6860FX from Best Buy and that you are running RAID 0 with two hard drives. I was at Best Buy looking over this laptop the other day and while the laptop does have a second hard drive bay, I didn't see any options in the BIOS for RAID. Are the RAID options only available when a secondary hard drive is installed? The sales people couldn't tell me anything. (Big surprise there.) Is the P-173XL FX the only one with a RAID controller or do all the FX editions including your P-6860FX have one and you just need to add a secondary hard drive to enable it?

I was going to buy the P-173XL FX, but if the P-7811FX is RAID enabled as well, I think i'd be better off getting the P-7811FX instead and just upgrade it like you have done with your P-6860FX.

Alright then. Looks like I'm going to wait for the P-7811FX and add another hard drive right out of the box. That is assuming the new P-7811FX will support RAID just like the old P-6860FX. Can anyone positively confirm that it does?

The P-173XL FX was really tempting from Tiger Direct at $1,629.99. However, its only been there a week since Gateway switched to an indirect sales model and its already no longer available.

It sounds like i'm better off with the P-7811FX since its got all the new technology anyway. PM45 chipset, DDR3, GeForce 9800M GTS, etc.

The date isn't set in stone. When I called the store their claim was that the item should be available for purchase between August the 8th and August 17th.

Just keep a sharp eye on the bestbuy site.

Is The gloss screen confirmed? This sucks.
I thought it's going to be non - gloss.
My desk has a window behind it,
so ever time someone opens the blinds
    I got annoying glare issues,
so I guess that means I'm confined to live in darkness ((( (kinda enjoying it tho ;))
    Gloss screens are so annoying.

P.S.: I also wondering if I should wait for a tax holiday before purchasing this laptop?
And also do they only offer 3 year accidental damage plan or you can purchase just the plan that covers parts and labor for less?

Free Warranty Info - I recommend buying all big ticket items with the American Express card. Buyers Assurance gives you ninety days of any kind of damage protection - including unlimited acts of stupidity - e.g.: flushed it down the toilet as (may be useful for Dook_In_The_Urinal), or ran over it with the car.
Additionally, Purchase Protection DOUBLES the mfg. warranty up to an additional year of parts and labor. Said another way, if you buy something with a two year mfg. parts and one year labor warr. AX will cover an additional year for both parts and labor - FREE. No sign up. No cost. Available on all card colors: green gold platnum and black.
Member since 93 and have used it many times. It once paid for a $1300 TV in full including tax, when AX decided not to fix it with 8 mo left on coverage. Cash back to card or check cut to you - your choice.
Finally, here is the gravy, if you buy any extended warranty at the time of purchase (up to 5 years p&l) they will put another year on that!!!
    They really are the best.

You can run raid either 0 or 1 what ever fits the bill and if you buy an extreme cpu you can OC via the bios not sure if it will be in the 7811 or not but i dont see why not .

but its still there now...? It looks like to me the 7811 is too much of a little bro for the 173xl to live with. Does anyone know if a 2.66 or better raid 174xl is in the works? the 7811 still needs a big bro.

The problem with that is that Gateway has stopped selling directly, thus removing the source of the X/XL models. It may release several versions of the 7811FX at Best Buy, but I don't see that as being very likely. Still, it's certainly possible.

The 173XL isn't the big brother of the 7811, but the big brother of the 6860FX/173X/172X/172XL.

The 7811's more like a distant younger (newer) cousin.

The 173XL is back up again on Tiger Direct. It was no longer available for about a day. Its still at the same price of $1629.99.

I'd rather get the 173XL if they do a technology refresh. So if there is going to be a 174XL, I'd rather buy that instead.

bestbuy will probably carry one model then tigerdirect will handle the others , or maybe gateway will spread out more and make different models for say circuit city and staples etc .

Ya but i was thinking more along the lines of other retailers carry gateway notebooks but not the P-17 series ie 6860 etc but figured maybe they will spread out a little bit more but maybe your right cause i didnt know that tiger bought out some of gateway so it may just be the 2 carrying these books.

Yep, pretty sure Acer has Gateway now.

On an international note, I am wondering if i should get the 7811 from the states, because I'm in the middle east and there ain't no gateway around here. But Acer is an enormous company here, much bigger than dell anyway!

Anyway, If i do get 7811, can I do without warranty and servicing? Is gateway that bad?

And another thing, if something happens to my laptop, will it be repairable without specifically Gateway parts?

As long as it's not a problem with the motherboard/GPU, you should be okay.

You probably won't have warranty/servicing as they won't have the appropriate parts available.

Do you guys think it would be quicker to order the 7811fx from bestbuy online to have it shipped. Or to wait until the local store gets it in (they said the 17th) and buy it directly. The problem that I have is that I'm in the caribbean right now and have to have my parents buy it for me and bring it down here. My mother leaves on the 20th so I basically have to make sure they get it by the 19th at the latest.

My only concern with getting it from the store directly is that they told my father they will only have about 6-7 of them in the first shipment and I dont know if they'll sell out before my dad buys it. Though my dads dealership is literally across the street from bestbuy so it shouldn't be that hard for him to get there in morning.

If I buy it online, then I have to worry about it getting to my house before the 19th.....hmmm...anyone have any suggestions?

my experiences with BB's standard shipping is really slow for me, on average for me about 12-15 business days. for others I don't know. I usually avoid BB's shipping and do an in store pick up.

again this is my experience, could vary for others.

I just checked estimated shipping time, and for standard shipping they give me the dates of 8/19 - 9/2! horrible.

If I use Express which is $25 dollars more I get the dates of 8/18 -8/27....Horrible.

Guess I'll just have to pray that my dad will get one of the 6 laptops from their first shipment. Though I'm hoping that not many people actually know that this model is coming out besides the few people that read these forums.
