Do you have to pay sales tax if you purchase in - store?
Cos 2nd weekend of August has tax holidays, is it a good idea to use them,
if it's out by then or, just order online?

Also, does Best Buy have variety of service plans
or just same one that says accidental coverage?

I am not sure what the source of this thinking is. I personally dont understand it. Maybe sharing what I know of the deal will help. In the spring, Acer bought GW. As of 7-24 the deal was complete and all i's dotted. At that point the agreement was GW would stop selling directly and layoff all related personel (sales and configuring/custom assembly/contingent product (customer choice) warehouse personel) and stopped its configure and sell direct business model. Recall the original model was retail only then retail and and telephone configuration, then telephone configuration (and stock models of course) only. Acer said fooey on configurations, sales people are free when you get other existing sales forces to sell for you. In fact people will PAY us to let them be exclusive sellers. That said Tiger Direct won the bid to carry all GW products exclusively - they paid $ for the privlidge to have all calls forwarded to them.

That doesnt stop them GW from building anything even something that competes with Acer line (although high end / low cost gamer computers aint exactly anywhere near Acer territory). So I see only green lights.

As far as the 173xl not being the big brother of the 6860, or by default its replacement the 7811, or that the 173 and 7811 are like "distant cousins" I cant see that as anything but kindred logic.

As long as it is in production, the 173xl is and has been clearly the top of the FX line. I see no reason for it to be stopped. GW will sell only stock design pcs. The 173xl to my knowledge was never configurable, and is not in disagreement with the current business model - just needs to be updated because the 7811 will clearly make it obsolete.

Looking at competitors, if GW follows Toshiba, et.al. (coming out with an upgraded and more expensive version of the x305 flamer which recently became the newest hot gamer offering at BB, with the newer more expensive higher HP machine soon to be available at Circuit City, it would make sense that GW would not stop by calling the value oriented 7811 (replacement for the value oriented 6860) without an upscale sibling. Just like there is a market for the super value power gamer machine, there certainly is room for another price notch before you go to the boutique machines priced at $3k to 5k. That is where the new 174xl should be positioned.

Imagine just for example GW using an existing FX laptop case design just like the old 173 or the new 7811, with all the latest goodies the 7811 has but with twin 320GB/7200rpm drives in raid zero with a fingerprint scanner and an extreme C2D, bluetooth and two more USB ports for $500 more. Toss in a 9800GTX and charge another $200 (maybe for a total of $2150.) Get crazy and put in a Blue Ray writer and charge another $400 - still would beat anything out there on price v. performance even at $2650. (I'd be looking hard at any of those configs). In reality the 2.26 GHz proc is simply a tease compared to what they could do. I say bring on the new 174xl. Nothin' wrong with having brothers.

For people on a 1000 to 1500 budget, it wouldnt be an issue. For me I am just here because the boutiques are twice the price, minimum
, and for me that borders on stupid money when the 173xl and 6860 and 7811 have the performance and price they do. (If I thought it could happen for less than $500 I would not hesitate to consider taking the chip out of my new 7811 day one and replacing it with an extreme and another 200 GB in raid 0.)

For others like me the announcement of a new 173xl (or whatever it would be called), could only be a problem if it is announced 31 days after the 7811 launch.

Unless Acer really screws GW up by trying to kill it and eat it, I see lots of possibilities for GW in the future in terms of capturing and expanding a wide open market niche. Wonder if they have people foaming at the mouth over the next round of technology over on the Sony forum. (not)

 

That particular bit would be rather unlikely as Gateway has always kept the same line of GPUs in the FX line. Still, they may surprise us.

 

Its one of the ways they save money to be able to sell these machines so cheap. Gateway mass...and i mean MASS purchase these preconfigured motherboards and cases so all they have to do is figure out which of the 3 CPU's and 3 Hard drive Configurations they want to put in and then ship them.

About the only time they diverge from this plan is when they add fingerprint readers and then they have to adjust the case a bit, because looking at the 6860 i have no idea where they even put the fingerprint reader with out having a seperate case just for those set ups.

Anyone with the fingerprint reader have a pic they can post to show me where its actually located on the machine?

 

Its in between the touchpad buttons. They are shortened to make room. Thats one feature I kinda wish the 6860 had.

Several states in the US, have a week or so where they waive sales tax on back-to-school related purchases, and a few years back computers were included. It included school supplies, clothing, laptops/desktops, calculators, etc...

ah, so they don't have to mod the case any. Makes sense, that means that except for the CPU/LCD/HDD/Touch pad they mass bought EVERYTHING else. And it appears that with the new FX line they get to use all of the Left over cases, 200GB hDD and 1920x1200 screens.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a "big brother" to the 7811 that the only difference will be a CPU and second HD (for 400gb RAID), but i doubt they would charge more than 2K-2200 for the thing. Because honestly except for gimmicky bells and whistles(blue tooth, finger print reader, etc) there isn't alot else they can really do for this machine.
Well maybe Blue Ray, but thats pretty specialized already as to who actually wants it and who doesn't.

 

I just want to point out that I went to best buy and saw the Red 17" Toshiba. I'd just like to say that things keyboard is a giant wave and feels awful compared to all the other notebooks there including the Gateway, which was very nice (talking about the older model not the new refresh). The new 15" Asus with 9700 is really nice...too bad isn't not 17"

 

I got all the way to the counter with it - Toshiba fire breathing beast (after struggling for a few days with the sub par design - at least for my tastes), then a salesperson helped shake up the deal when they couldnt answer simple questions about warranty. Finally a GSquad commando capped it off by raising performance issues related to DDR3 they had seen in other DDR3 machines - his words not mine. Was enough to make me wait and I am glad I did. That thing is BUTT ugly and I never would have forgiven myself for buying it.

I have a friend in the USA and i want to ask him to buy this laptop for me 'cause it's much cheaper over there. i don't know how much it's gonna cost me with shippment and tax(customs tax or smth like that). anyways i was wondering about the screen. ok it's wuxge(that means that the resolution is pretty good)but how is it. is it like the old lcd screens, i mean if you look at it from the left/right side you can't see what's dislayed on the screen(i mean the specs don't say anything about truelife or brightview or something like that).i am no expert in lcd screens i was just wonderng, it would be pretty lame if the screen is so ,,old school'', especially considering it beeing a gaming laptop. thanks guys!!!

 

If it does start selling in stores on the 17th, I'll be picking it up on my birthday. Maybe I can get a best buy birthday discount? Especially since I have to drive 40 miles to the closest Best Buy.

We still don't have a concrete street date at this time. The store I called reported a range of August 7th through the 17th. The Best Buy employee here suggested a date of the 14th.

I think I speak for all of us who are waiting money in hand, that no matter the date, it's not fast enough.

Seeing as to how no one here has actually seen the laptop, we can't give you an answer. It will be a glossy model though.

 

I thought I'd read somewhere the screen was a blend not glossy not matte but more of a satin finish screen. However, assuming GW leverages their current 1900x1200 WUXGA screen supplier (used for the 173XL), the following images would lead me to believe it is a gloss (glass) screen as I can see a very clear reflection of the keyboard in the screen on the front overhead view.

i don't plan on buying this model b/c I have the 6831 (which blew up this forum LOL)

hmm... seeing that u just signed up in the month of your bday, you might miss out on it. i dont know if their system will give you ur bday discount during the month you sign up, but you can always complain about it and say this is the sole reason why i am shopping at bestbuy... maybe a manager might hook you up.

you never, just ask but i would count on receiving it in the mail seeing that mail takes forever and it takes creditors (depending on which one), anywhere from 2-6 weeks to issue you your card.

fyi, just looking at the bday discount, doesnt apply to laptops and big ticket items (ie tvs, home theaters, etc...) however, last time i used a coupon like this in bestbuy, i was purchasing my 2 HDDs which BBs coupons dont apply to internal HDDs, only external HDDs but i complained about it and got my discount.

think i might just pick this lappy up and sell it on craigs or ebay just for the heck of it if i get the discount

 

Thanks for answering guys!!! what i actually ment was, how the screen looks like if you view it from another angle(if you don't look at it from the front)...if you look at it from the top or from one side or the other. Some laptops specify things about the screen like BRIGHTVIEW or TRUELIFE or TRUEBRIGHT and so on. On older laptops if you changed the view just a bit(to difffrent angle than right ,,face to face'' you could't see what appeared on the screen anymore, the screen apeared just black). can you guys ,,catch my drift''???I hope that is not the case with this model and I thought you guys might know for shure from earlier models(read that the screen is the same). So Thanks!!!

 

I watched some reviews on earlier models and the screen seems just fine!!!

 

Glossy is annoying. I had it on my previous laptop and had constant glare issues whenever there's a light source behind it.

 

If it's a glossy screen, just purchase a non-adhesive static cling matte protector. Slap it on and quit whining! Ta-da!

 

that discount does not work for computers. So keep your expectations low at this point. But you will get that 2% or whatever giftcards after a month or so.

Why wait for a discount? Just look it at as if you're paying a premium to have it right now than wait for it to get a discount that's only a few hundred dollars cheaper...

I'd say that is exactly what happened. Nice guy. Rookie mistake if he used his real name. Google anything related to the GW 6860 or 7811 or 173 and you will be lead to this site. Not rocket surgery just a twenty something mistake. In business, we tend to frown upon those that copy unreleased internal data and offer it to the public.
