one week troops! -
Nah, it's just that the Gateway forums are usually left somewhat alone. -
ah I see
I would love to moderate this forum LOL!
only one thread relating to the laptop vs a million other ones -
Hmm... So, I went over to Best Buy yesterday, possibly checking if they had any info on this model that I didn't already have. They didn't. But I did get to check out the 6860. From what I could see, the ports are very much in the same spots and everything, and I think I recall people posting in other threads that the frame is essentially if not totally the same.
Anyway, if it is, that would mean the build quality I saw in the 6860 display model would be very similar to what I could expect in the 7811 correct? I wasn't impressed but I certainly wasn't frightened about it breaking. The screen was a bit more flexible than I'm used to but other than that it seemed ok.
Are the fans also in the same place? Because I'm looking at buying an external fan to keep it cool. Do the fans on the bottom of the 6860 blow air in or out? -
Is it not going to look as good playing Crysis with 1024x768 (all high) with the 7811 (1920x1200 native) than the 6860 (1440x900 native)?

P-173XL FX for $1630 at Tiger
P-7811FX for $1450 at BB
$180 difference.
P-173XL FX has
8800 Video
2nd 200GB HD
Isn't the P-173XL FX a better buy or is the new CPU and Chipset that much better? What am I missing? I would buy a second HD anyway.
My Everex (which I love to hate) has a GO7600 and they are dropping like flies so I'm feeling a tad insecure ATM. -
The 7811 comes with the P8400, 9800M GTS and 1 x 200 7200 RPM.
The processors' performance should be indiscernible, while the 9800M GTS is looking to be slightly better. -
Must be those old ATI numbers gettin' crost wize in my noggin'
Thanks. -

went to BB today and their computer said they had two in stock but they couldnt find them. I bought one on a raincheck so they'll give me a call when the figure out what it is or once they get the next one shipped.

FWIW...
Want to save money on the P-7811FX?
On Monday, go to your local (US) Post Office and pick up a change of address packet. Inside you will find various coupons. Last time I looked, there was a Best Buy 10% off coupon for large ticket items (including, if I recall corectly, computers). I would have used it on my 6860 but it had expired the previous month.
Something for the salivating 7811 buyers to look into... (the coupon may not be in the latest packets). -
from what I remember laptops weren't included on those.

hey guys do u think i should upgrade the cpu to 2.53 for the new gateway? or am i gonna be fine?

Why is the P-7811FX not on the website? http://www.gateway.com/systems/series/529598056.php
(I know, it's in some obscure section)
1. Cutting back on IT salaries
2. It's an ugly step child
3. The guy in charge didn't get around to it.
4. The arrival came as a surprise and Gateway is shocked.
5. No one but me cares.

It's most likely because Gateway is busy moving to indirect sales. It's a good thing for us because this means less people know about this godlike machine, so it'll be easier for us to get our hands on.

You can actually find some of the retail models on Best Buy's website, just look at their retail models section. -
The 68XX's were really never on the Gateway site? is that true?
-
-
Is downscaling going to affect the gaming performance on the 7811 FX? (1920x1200 -> 1440x900) compared to the 6860 being able to play games at its native resolution (1440x900)?
-
The 171s, 172s and 173s are only a Tiger Direct exclusive now that Gateway has sold them the rights after the move to indirect sales.
And doubt all you want, but this is the way its been for years. The 68s as well and the new 78s have always been and are currently Best Buy exclusives. They have not been and will not be advertised for sale on the Gateway website.
And Syng, that was a very good question and will help to explain to some why they cannot purchase the newer models at gateway.com. -
However, you had to go search under their retail section. And if you wanted to buy it, it would link you to BB's website.
All that stuff has now been removed though, so no one can really prove anything. -
That's just poor marketing, it wouldn't cost them much to put up a picture and specs under the products page. Now I know why when I tell people I'm getting a Gateway they say "Gateway still exists?"
-
-
-
-
-
They haven't. Gateway always lists specs and gives a manual, but you have never been able to buy a 68xx directly from gateway.com
Please feel free to prove me wrong. -
I think we're talking about whether or not it's been directly advertised rather than whether or not it was for sale on the site.
-
Dook is referring to the fact that the 68XX series are not available for purchase from gateway.com. This is true.
However, I'm referring to the fact that you can find some information advertising the 68XX on gateway.com, but any purchase directs you to Best Buy. This is also true.
ARE WE CLEAR YET?
Are we talking in circles again? -
Ok, so the 68XX's and 78XX's were advertised on GW even though they weren't for sale on GW. Now that that's settled, I think we can agree that the "best buy exclusivity" doesn't answer the original question of why the 7811 isn't advertised on the GW website, since the same exclusivity was advertised by GW in the past.
-
-
Is the 7811 FX really worth it when it comes to gaming? The 1920x1200 native resolution means that video games need to be downscaled to 1440x900.
-
Now for my next question ...
-
OK. Seeing as this is getting out of hand due people finding it fun to debate technacalities and play on words its probably best to end it on these notes:
1.) Gateway did not "forget" or are "too busy with the move to indirect sales" to put the 7811fx up. That's just silly. There's usually a reason a mfr doesnt put a new product up and in this case, its most likely due to it being a Best Buy exclusive, especially considering they are no longer directly selling products and none of the other BB exclusives are currently mentioned anywhere(except in drivers and downloads). Which brings me to my next point....
2.) To this day, there is no mention of the Best Buy exclusives anywhere on the site with the exception of drivers and downloads AFTER you put in your serial number. They aren't even in the product listing drop down in the support center! You think maybe that has something to do with them being a Best Buy exclusive? Hmmm. It's a mystery!
3.) And lastly I did, in fact, leave a word out when I said they weren't sold on gateway.com. What I MEANT to say was these particular units weren't sold DIRECTLY by gateway.com, which somehow started this whole ridiculous argument. Anyone with half a brain knows what was ultimately being said. It's just childish to nit-pick at a simple word mistake when you KNOW what the person was trying to convey and turn it into something its not.
At any rate....I'm done with this one. Moving right along..... -
Where do you see it getting out of hand? lol.. You're taking it the wrong way man. We're not calling you out on your mistake. We honestly (or I honestly) didn't know what you meant, it wasn't an argument, it was us trying to make sense of it. But anyway, like we finally concluded, the best buy exclusives WERE advertised on GW's site at one point, which sort of (but not fully) rules that possibility out as an answer to why these aren't advertised. Either way, you shouldn't be making any definite conclusions because none of us really know why, we're speculating. So saying they forgot or are too busy may not be as silly as you think. Anyway, you're debating technicalities in that post as well... the difference is you're trying to have the last word in it
. It's not that big a deal that you made a mistake man, it happens to the best of us, you can let it go without trying to say "i'm right, lets move on."
