What kind of external battery pack would work with this laptop?

That's an incredible difference in battery life. If you happen to find out what exactly causes the P34G's battery life to be so poor, please let me know.

Edit: Not sure how to delete this post to avoid doublepost.

Well iv'e found two that look pretty promising:
    V60 Universal Laptop Battery
    Anker Astro Pro2 20000mAh Multi-Voltage External Battery

And as for why the battery is so crappy is because its only a 47.73Wh battery which has terrible battery life its 15'' brother the p35k has a 90 something Wh battery. You can see the battery in my post on page 135. But all cutting edge laptops have to compromise somewhere, the razer blade has great battery life but a poor screen, The Ge40 with its heating problems they all have to compromise somewhere but hopefully in about 2-3 years they'll get it perfect.

It all boils down to the battery capacity being lower, but for us it gives us exposed SODIMMs and easy upgrade options on storage. Swings and roundabouts.

Anybody try removing the HDD and only using the mSATA SSD to increase battery life?

Have anyone played with the thought of running a Crucial M500 480gb msata and an M500 480gb regular SSD in raid 0 on the P34G. It has hardware support for raid, right?

The HDD uses little power and when not being read from or written to constantly it spins down and consumes next to nothing. It won't make a difference of hours, just a few minutes. It's a 5400RPM too which is pretty moderate. Modern magnetic drives are quite power efficient.

I had envisioned a different type of external battery pack. I'd still have to use the charger to make use of those battery packs, right? The portability of this laptop is deceptive, considering all of the extra weight you have to carry around to make it work.

Yeah it is everything about this laptop is great, apart from the battery life. I need longer battery life because i'm also going to be using this at school. There's nothing else light or powerful enough in my price range. I guess i'll just charge it in my backpack when i'm not using it :/ :(

At least it charges quickly, that's nice. But yeah an external charging battery to trickle charge it in a backpack is probably the best choice we have.

I'm sure it doesn't have true hardware RAID support, but it may have BIOS/driver software support. True hardware raid cards costs as much as this laptop does.

These buggers come with a bunch of tips to match your DC input. It would be crazy to pack a DC-to-AC converter in the battery and then use your power supply to convert the AC back to DC which is what laptops require.

I agree, but the more CPU intensive on-board/low-end pci-card variety is still ways better than software based solutions in the OS.

Hi all, I've been tracking the P34G since it was first announced in early June. I had a UX32VD ASUS Gaming 13.3" Ultrabook and liked it but the power was lacking, the wifi card had issues and I have a 9mm 480GB SSD that I'd like to drop into this, so I was very glad to hear it was released.

My father's laptop keyboard broke a couple of days back and I'm looking at giving him my current N56VZ and getting one of these shortly.

I've read over much of this thread and various reviews. My question is: Was anyone able to get Notebook Fan Control to work? It sounds like the device can be quite annoying without spinning up and down, but with it I'm hoping it will be nice and silent as my UX32VD was. It sounded like someone was able to "sort of" make it work - has anyone else been able to do so too?

    Thanks very much,
    Peter

    Hi all,

I have been following both the p34g and the p35k for quite sometime now, and I've decided to buy the former after the build issues with the latter. My question is which retailer should I buy it from? I was originally introduced to the laptop through xoticpc, but after seeing all the work Ken did from GentechPC, I decided to go with them. Now, I stand at the issue of gentech vs newegg due to newegg's rather cheap accident warranty. My last laptop had water spilled on it by one of my roommates, and none came forward essentially screwing me out of $800. If I were to buy from gentech, the only upgrade I would get is the free IC paste. If I bought from Newegg, would I still be able to send in the laptop along with upgrades so that I don't break the warranty.

    Thanks for your help!

The undulating fan bothers people a lot from all the threads/reviews I've read.

FYI There is a forum in German that you can ask for assistance with getting the P34G Notebook Fan Control working. I don't have one or I'd try - but the creator of the tool helps people with it.

Here is a link to the translation, note another P34G user asked but did not offer to help.

    Google Translate

Also, it has the most hilarious translation issue I've ever seen in my life. Someone asked for the U2442-N to have get a config set up without helping at all, the response was:

Idioms do not translate well :p

Though it sounds like maybe someone in this thread was about to get NBFC to partly work?

Once we get it configured we can set custom ranges to have the fan on so that the system will be continuously near silent when under light use while the fans would still pick up as much as needed when things get hot.

    Thanks,
    Peter

I don't think newegg does that sort of work. You could probably buy from Newegg, and send it to gentech and have them do the work but it would cost you money.

    Hello Guyz,

Just got my laptop today and its rock solid but have a major issue of the noise....it ramps up in between producing lot of noise. Full load also makes lot of noise which is not bearable at all. Any fix or fan control tool to fix it.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you.

    On idle: CPU 45-55 C GPU 45-50
On Load: CPU 85-90 GPU 70-80

The problem is its constantly ramping up fan even if a single application is been clicked on and the noise is very annoying. At very idle state i.e just doing nothing is doesnt sound. Is there any way like BIOS setting or tweak which can control fan to keep this machine quite. :)

So I got my p34g the other day and I can say that evverythihng is great except for a few things...

    1. The touchpad button (on the left) was bent a little down as to make your finger catch when you slide it up to the trackpad... VERY annoying and almost made me send it back. I'm trying to figure out if I could somehow bedn it back becuz it is irritating.

    2. the dynamics on how you push the buttons is a little annoying as well. What I mean by that is if your thumb is resting on the main left button and you want to right click somthing. usually you would move your finger to the right and click the right button (right click) on the LEFT side of the RIGHT button... because that is obviously the closest and most natural place for your finger... This doesnt work on this laptop. There is a hinge in the middle of the buttons so when you click the middle of the buttons or anything close to that it becomes extremely hard to press versus clicking the left and right sides of the button.

    3. This might be a driver issue for me but the bluetooth will not connect to my phone once it has paired... IT pairs and says connected for 10 seconds but thats it.

    4. this isnt an issue but I have a question. My screen has like a "I can see every pixel kinda rainbow effect" ... This is because its a matte display and not a glossy one right? I have an IPS matte display at home that I feel has the same look to it but I just want to be clear. When I look at white things I can see like the indivisual sparkle of the pixels if that makes sense.

Other then that I'm happy with it.

P.S. There was this one time where the fans spun out of control fast and I thought it was broken bcuz it was so loud and obnoxious but it only happened once and I think thats just the sound itmakes at full speed...

Use NVIDIA GPU Control to tell things like Chrome (that don't need it) to stop using the GPU and to use the Intel. Use Smart Manager to put Fan Tweak on stealth or Auto, set Ultra Boost to "Off" or "Performance."

    1. A common build defect, most but not all have it. If it's anything more than 1mm though I'd say send it back and get a new one.
    2. It's the rocker. Takes some adjustment, but you'll get used to it after a while, then it's no biggie.
    3. What's your driver version?
    4. Yes. Try dropping your display brightness.

Regarding #4, I see the same thing. When I look closely, my big IPS HP monitor on my desktop has a less pronounced version of the same thing. After using this for more than a month, I can say that I no longer notice the effect. It is most pronounced on large expanses of white, and virtually invisible when gaming.

I'm just curious: I haven't really noticed any fan noise problems with my unit. Perhaps I'm just used to more noise. Might using Windows 7 instead of Windows 8 have any impact?

#1. I can say that it irritated me so much that I was about to send it back but the vendor I bought it from (excaliburpc) gave me a $75 refund for the trouble and I decided to keep it because of that... Their customer service is perfect in my opinion. They gave me the option of keeping it for $75 less or full refund. Great service.

#4. I think its my phone because I have connected two other bluetooth devices to it and it works fine with those. I have an LG G2 verizon edition.

The fan does the job it just sparks up too often and it's quite binary, on or off, wouldn't mind a spectrum of fan speeds.

I have read even with the inbuilt fan Stealth mode the fan is very annoying ( Review Gigabyte P34G Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews) so I have been trying to find another way to control it - Notebook Fan Control is the best and is very customizable if you can get it to work and would do all this perfectly.

Thanks for the help. But I think so in general the quality of fan is not good and it is noisy from within. Even after tweaking it it might help at idle range. But if its get a bit higher the fans tend to make noise. Also there is minor vibration in the machine when the fan kicks. I think this is caused by the two fans and the 5400rpm hdd running simultaneously.

The way that program works is it allows you to change the values where the fan kicks in. So say if you open a new window it causes a one second spike as the CPU loads and restarts that and this generates enough heat to push the CPU to 62*C for that second. By default, let's say, that causes the CPU Fan to kick into a higher gear than idle and causes noise.

However, with this application you could set it so the CPU fan only kick up from idle at 65*C, for example, so it would only come on if you are really doing something sustained rather than just opening windows.

The CPU fans will still be loud if they need to go to maximum (it's a thin and light chassis so it will be louder than most in those cases), but you can control at what level they go to maximum so that you can use the computer in day to day usage almost all the time with very little noise and consistently very little.

    Does that make sense?

    Peter

Thats seems logical and I completely agree to you. But I am not that geek to customize with the software as it seems tedious. Is there any ready tweak available to do so that would be great.

That's awesome thank you. Below are the posts I've seen in the past in this thread about Notebook Fan Control and what I could put together without having the actual notebook myself to work with.

That other Gigabyte Fan Control thread is here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gig...ntrol-sortof-works-anyone-found-anything.html (which is now named: Gigabyte U2442N Fan Control - Now Working)

In terms of a guide, you can check (from this thread: http://www.computerbase.de/forum/showthread.php?t=1070494) for the Tools & Docs that might be helpful for getting NBFC to run:

Okay, I've messed around for a while. I have 8 registers that move about. Three are more sensitive to cpu temp and 3 are more sensitive to GPU temp and two are somewhere in between. Changing their values doesn't change much. I think I need some help with a more qualified computer person telling me what to do next...

Finally got my P34G from Xotic. All if good, no dead pixels, the WIFI card is correct, have my 16GB upgrade and the compound was applied (or I believe so as I will not remove the pipes to check ;-). It came obviously preinstalled with Win8, however as I will be using this baby at work I need to get our company Win 7 Enterprise edition installed but this turns out to be more problematic than I anticipated.

I know that someone on here has done the same, but I don't see any specific instructions. I have followed the PCMAG instructions which tell me to disable the secure boot and then switch the UEFI boot option to legacy, but my USB boot drive will not boot. No matter what selection I make (it is a SanDisk 16GB stick) and is recognized as Sandisk and SanDisk UEFI, it will not boot from it. I put the same stick in my desktop and no problem.

Is it possible that the bios is locked to only accept Win8 boot disk and not Win7?

Anyone can help, would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

also delete variables or something like that .. it is on the same screen in the bios

You then need to boot from the non-UEFI if I remember correctly.

I had it working, but my work required me to encrypt all drives and that doesn't work with the GPT drive. You may want to look into running a VM. I have Win 8.1 Pro and use the included hyper-v to run Win 7 for work.

Well, I tried that too. Even in the save&exit menu I applied the Win7 setup and that would not work. Then I remembered on the OEM download page that there is a Beta firmware for Win7 Bios and now my flash drive was accepted no questions asked. I assume that with this beta version Win8 may not be possible, but for now and as long my work place is sticking with Win7 I am happy this worked. The new bios looks exactly the same as my N2442V

Hey guys, been following this laptop for a while. Thinking about buying it now, but does anyone have any opinion between this and the Asus Zenbook UX302LG?

Also, is there any point waiting for a week for Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales for this thing considering it's a niche laptop, so prices probably won't drop? Would a company like GentechPC have like, a site wide discount by any chance :p

If you enter the BIOS, there is an option which is called "Load configurations for Win 7". Same applies to Win 8. Just discover what they offer you within the BIOS.

There is a slight yellow tint on the edges of my display that extend for about 1.5cm that only affects me when their are pure whites on the screen. I dont want to rma it and end up with a worse laptop cause everything else on it works perfectly fine. It is possible that the glue in the screen is still curing but I have had this laptop since Oct 10th so i would think it would be gone by now. Maybe its where the back light is located but Maybe it just needs calibration. Windows screen calibrator does not really work for me, do you guys have any suggestions.

this is a common problem with IPS (and alike) screens. "Even" Apple products suffer from it...
Some screens are better, some worse. :)

I tried to download the NBFC in the link above and run it. But it is not running on my p34g. Also I tried Gigabyte U2442N config on my machine but no result whatsoever. Only need to get the fan level 2 at 60 degree rather than 50 degree which sound so annoying. Please try to find out the way out and even I will. Thank you. :)
