I am consistently having issues of NVIDIA GPU consuming power even though Intel integrated graphics are being used when the laptop goes to sleep and then wake up. My workaround is to avoid sleep and use hibernate instead.

Thanks! I never use sleep or hibernate. From first moment it starts, discrete graphics is running. Only fix I found was to disable in bios. But fan management doesn't work right if I do that.

My guess is that it is yet another incarnation of bad Gigabyte software (probably Control Center.) I sent a request to GB, but have not heard back yet.

Is there a special trick to having a Windows program use discrete graphics? I am very familiar with Nvidia control center functioning, but it does not work. I set it specific programs to use Nvidia, but none of them do. (Some things do trigger a bit of GPU use, but not the things I choose.)

    Any suggestions?

Go to Windows Settings -> Display -> Graphics setting. Then choose an app to set the preference.

Thanks. I seems like it works on some, but not on others.

Is there a way to make everything run on discrete, short of disabling onboard?

GB says it is not true, but I am convinced battery life is shortened by running both all the time.

I don't aware of a method to disable the integrated GPU. But I can share with you a few of my experiences:
    1. In the Windows Task Manager. you can right-click at the column header and select GPU engine. Then you should be able to tell which GPU is being used per process. GPU 0 is Intel and GPU 1 is Nvidia.
    2. Nvidia or discrete GPU is being used when you hook up your laptop to an external monitor through HDMI or display port. So let say you hook up a TV to your laptop through HDMI, then you launch an app that specified to use the integrated graphic on Windows Graphic or Nvidia setting, the app might still use the discrete graphic. For me, my workaround is to use thunderbolt as a display port because that used Intel GPU.
    3. I used the latest driver from both Nvidia and Intel web site instead of the driver from Gigabyte. Also, I have switched to use the DCH driver for both Intel and Nvidia. I also have installed the Nvidia Control panel and Intel Graphic center through the windows app store. Windows wise I also using the latest version 1909.
    4. In Nvidia Control Center -> Manage 3D settings -> Global Settings, my preferred graphics processor is Integrated graphics.
    5. Use NVidia Control Panel-> Desktop meu -> Display GPU activity icon in Notification Area to determine whether the Nvidia GPU is active and which app using the Nvidia GPU
    6. With the setup above, and my laptop is Gigabyte Aero 15x9 4K with 8750H and 1070 Max-Q, I have no problem with using Intel GPU most of the time to maximize my laptop battery life but use nVidia on the app that I want to use. Apps I want to use Nvidia include Unity, all windows games from Windows Xbox game pass. Everything else using Intel including browser especially watches Youtube video.

Anyone understand the incestuous relationship between GB Control Center and Intel XTU? On my Aero 17, CC will not open if XTU service is not running.

It makes it kinda difficult to use Throttle Stop if you can't stop XTU. ;)

Also, question #2: Has anyone figured out a way around the horrendous throttling when running on battery? I am seeing about 70% reduction in available power. Power plans don't matter, fan speed does not matter. Nothing seems to fix it.

Humm I ran that same ram in my V8 without issue. Have you tried each stick individually? On the latest bios?

Actual bios FB0A/F008 is installed. I tried both sticks together and individually. Each stick is running together with one of the slower chips. But only on 1200 Mhz clock speed.

Throttlestop settings are not persistent I think. The laptop is only starting when one of the inserted sticks has lower timings (with 19 19 19 43 max). And the RAM is running on 1333 Mhz clock speed, in case both sticks have these slower max timings (see attached image).

Anyone else having an issue with excessive "System" CPU use? Several times a day, I am noticing CPU running higher than it should and I look and see this pic. After googling, everything pointed to Nvidia/directx. I tried disabling Nvidia graphics, and the problem goes away. But if I turn of Nvidia graphics, it eventually comes on again.

    Any suggestions?

    Dear Aero 15 people,

after my Aero 15 X9 was DOA (USB 3.1 port defective, consumed 60W at idle) I can now finally use it. But I struggle to find the options "super quiet mode" and "super boost mode" which Gigabyte promotes!? Mine is always running the fans...even on idle doing nothing. The super quite mode would make sense to me since I have no intention fiddling with Trottlestop for now and I won't use maxpower for more than some seconds when doing RAW foto work etc.
I do have Gigabyte Control Center 19.10.21.02 installed and I have literally no idea where I should be able to turn on those modes. I activated quiet...but like I said. Fan is on...almost all the time.

Thank you very much for the help!

I have the gigabyte aero 15 oled 1660ti version. I can't seem to find anything regarding VUDU and UHD compatibility with this laptop. Is there a reason why Netflix works just find, but VUDU doesn't when it comes to UHD? Granted the netflix app always crashes on me for some reason. I have to use edge in order to play netflix without crashes. I have tried switching to Nvidia graphics as the dedicated card and that didn't seem to work.

My pc is running a fresh install of windows 10 pro and not the version that the laptop came with (could that be causing this?)

I appreciate any help with this.

    Hi all, I'm a new & proud owner of a Gigabyte 15 classic laptop (RTX 2070 max-q, i7 9th gen, etc)

I have concerns regarding the longevity of the machine.

Q #1: The laptop gets just too hot when playing anything GPU intensive even at max fan mode (fn + Esc). Does Gigabyte use thermal paste on the CPU & GPU? I can apply Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut or something to help, but I was just wondering if they beat me to it.

Q #1.5: The rear of the laptop is very low and when casually resting on a flat surface, I don't think it's enough room for air flow thus causing issue #1. Any way around this?

Q #2: The battery charges all the way to 100% and I was concerned about the long-term battery health as a result of always fully charging. I wanted to keep it in good health by limiting max charge to 80% or something. But it seems the Control Center doesn't have an option for that?

Q #3: The laptop wakes up from sleep mode every 4hrs or so all on its own. Is this a bug?

Q #4: (not longevity-related) I was wondering how to get Stereo Mix on the machine (AKA record what u hear)

I have had it a few days on my Aero 17 i7/1660. Don't see anything changed of substance. Certainly no change in circuit whine, fan management or excessive throttling on battery.

I can answer a few of these questions:

1: There is obviously some kind of thermal paste on the cpu/gpu but its nothing super fancy. There was another thread around here talking about performance optimizations, and it seems like repasting won't help that much. I have liquid metal on mine and it'll still thermal throttle (90C CPU) if I'm not paying attention. Fear not! there are a few ways to get the temperature down to something reasonable.
1a. Be sure to undervolt your CPU with throttlestop or XTU. This is probably the biggest improvement you can do. Repasting might give you 1-2C but undervolt got me 5.
2a. You can OC the gpu a little bit with Afterburner. This one won't help a ton with max thermals, but may give you a few more frames without raising the temp.
3a. Lastly, and the easiest one you can do. On my V8 every time I plug in to AC it switches my power profile to SmartManager High Performance. From my limited testing, this is the worst possible thing you can do for gaming. It sets the CPU to max clock, even if the CPU doesn't want it. This guarantees I will hit thermal throttle in any intensive game. Changing to balanced mode lets the CPU decide when to boost and I have seen no change in FPS, but I never hit 90C anymore.

1.5. Use a laptop cooler just to get some elevation. In a pinch, I use my wallet or other small object to elevate the back of the machine when gaming. Also, if you're using an external monitor never play with the lid closed.

    2. I don't have any hard data to back this up, but I have much less battery longevity issues on newer machines than older ones. Some of my old laptops the battery would be shot after a year of heavy use, I'm not seeing that anymore. I think the charge management these days and battery tech is significantly better. I wouldn't worry too much about it. You will most likely be upgrading before the battery gives out.

    3. Is it exactly 4 hours? If I leave mine plugged in to AC, Windows will almost always turn it on in the middle of the night or reboot it if it was left on. Mine never turns on when AC is unplugged though (Windows 7 will do it however, which destroyed an old HP laptop I had in a backpack).

Thanks for the tips. I finally got around to tinkering with the laptop after exchanging it for another (same specs) thru the retailer. The 4hr wake-up issue isn't happening on the 2nd. I guess it was a bug?

I figured out how to limit the battery max charge! In the Gigabyte Control Center, under Manager tab, there's "Charging Policy". I selected "Customize" and the limit could be set to any number above 60%. I put 95% and the battery shows as high as 97% at that number, so it fluctuates by a few.

I undervolted the CPU with ThrottleStop by 1.50V, no issues with that AFAIK. I tried to OC the GPU on Afterburner and the software wouldn't allow any mods due to being a non-desktop GPU (huh?), so I installed EVGA Precision X1 instead. I didn't modify anything and went straight to the VF Curve Tuner scan. Even with the ThrottleStop UV disabled, every single scan results in a BSOD...EVGA is known to be buggy. Not sure what to make of it. Perhaps I got one of "those" GPU's.

Btw in the EVGA HWM panel tab, my GPU (2070 max-q) temp reaches 86 C under max load.

    Hello!

I have a Aero 15x (i7-8750H). I am looking into buying an external monitor for it but I've never had a extra monitor before. Is there anything I should look for in terms of compatibility when shopping for a monitor?

So my battery would not charge above ~80% and then I started noticing the track pad was bulging out. Turns out the battery was swollen! So something else for the rest of you to look forward to! 20200120_145957.jpg 20200120_150008.jpg

Where is the best place to sell an Aero laptop? I am having serious regrets about my 17 SA (circuit whine, horrible fan management, weight, etc.) and am thinking of buying my old XPS 15 9560 again.

Also for those who may interested I suggested flash an Asus strix rtx 2060 90 watt limiter bios on the rtx 2060 80 watt of were 15 oled WA, that bios also had better voltage control and very higher speeds and i got a big boostz undervolted CPU -0,155 but still thermals are a paifor those who want a stock better gpu it's safe guaranteed to flash strix bios using nvflash.

Anyone can help me with the other problems?

please can you help me? i bought this laptop and those ram reading your post but i wasn't registered on the forum until now

i got aero 15 oled WA with bios FB08 FC007 and no way to let it boot with HX426S15IB2K2/32

it requires one original 8gb samsung stick to be in, whatever slot, whatever position, but kingston alone don't work, but with samsung each kingstin stick work in a 8 + 16gb setup....

i think it's bios? or gen 9 cpu? or just luck trying to reboot over and over swapping slots?

Hope you can help cause the reason of upgrading is CL15 for me, not the amount of memory, dual channel 2x8gb are enough in performance, the CL15 would have made the difference and these kingston were the only reported to work in this thread.... hope you read this message... i don't want to burn 150 eur for unused rams LOL!

Got aero 15 oled WA bios FB08 firmware fc007 and no way t get these ram works, starts only with one stick original 8gn Samsung, the other Kingston get recognized at 2400mhz (both, the Samsung gets downgraded) and it reveals only as xmp and no jedec, but they are jedec compliant 2666 cl15 1,20v according to their datasheet. If I put only Kingston there is black screen.
Someone got same problem but ended successfully somehow, got any clue?

I just bought a kit of 32gb from amazon. HX426S15IBK2/32. With the latest Bios
Tried all methods as mentioned in the forum but still face the blank screen.

I have tried the following and conclude that the aero 15 can only works with
    1) 1 x Kingston hyperx impact 16gb + 1 x Original stock Kingston 16gb
Dual mode but Speed was at 2400 mhz.
the performance was very good and less laggy

    2) 1 x Crucial 16gb ram 2666 mhz cl19 + 1 x Original stock Kingston 16gb
Dual mode but speed was at 2666 mhz
But kind of laggy even at 2666 mhz.

I not sure as someone posted that it works in the aero15 bios FB05, ECF006. able to boot it with dual mode at speed of 2666 mhz.
I not so sure whether the bios Fb05 would boot with the hyperx impact 32gb ?

Some even mentioned that it was the manufacturer of the ram.
Previous Hyperx impact was samsung, now the current was hynix.

anyone able to boot the system with kit of 32gb hyperx impact 2666 mhz CL15 ?
    https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Technology-HyperX-HX426S15IB2K2-32/dp/B01NAL3TYY

do share if possible as i understand that there are many users stranded with this issue.

Just want to boot with a dual mode at 2666 mhz with the 32gb Hyperx impact
    thanks

Hello, I've seen this issue come up on many posts in this threat, but after a long afternoon read, i haven't found a solution.

    I have an Aero 15X i7 7700-HQ with GTX-1070 max-Q.

So the issue seems to be the dGPU doesn't go idle while on DC and battery lasts around 3-4 hours. If i restart the laptop, it usually gets fixed.
The thing is, everytime i use my laptop while plugged in,when I unplug it, i have to restart to get a decent battery life. I use Throttlestop and while the dGPU is active, the PKG consumption never goes under 12W (normally 1-5W on idle). I've read in this threat something about "Optimus" from Nvidia not working correctly or something on those lines.

As I've read on previous posts, I've tried the following things:
    - Reseted all my Intel and Nvidia drivers to the ones Gigabyte recommend on their SmartUpdate.
    - Checked and reseted my power management plans.
    - Cheched the GPU usage through Nvidia's Control Panel and GPU is active without actually any processes using it.

If anyone from the previous posts with the same issue achieved solving this, I'd love to know how you managed it.
Thanks to everyone's answers in advance.

I would use the display driver uninstaller (DDU) to remove all of your NVIDIA drivers and then reinstall it to see if that helps. There have been some issues with other laptops running the newest NVIDIA drivers and it doing the same thing.

I can't tell from the picture, but is your dGPU actually powered on? One odd thing that I've noticed in your picture is your CPU is at a high wattage if it's idle. Do you have the rapid storage drivers installed?

Through the picture i wanted to show how the GPU should be idle but the Smartmanager is till monitoring the temperature. And yes, the CPU's wattage is what's lowering the battery so much...

I have never hear do "rapid storage drivers" before, should i install them or something?

yeah I would try that, if they aren't updated your cpu can stay in a higher power mode. It's worth a shot.

Sorry for asking but, aren't those drivers specific for Intel's Optane modules? I'm using two SSD.

    Thanks for ur time. :)

None works on the aero oled, tried gskill and also Corsair I looked with my eyes they have jedec profile 2666 c18 but still no boot ... This is gigabyte limiting bios with a check for Samsung rams serials otherwise stops booting... They did it voluntary, in fact the aero 2019 oled lists only Samsung compatible. Tried all sets or rams in this thread, ALL, bought 1000 eurn of rams and sent back to Amazon the same day, you won't install anything but Samsung on 2019 models, and this is something to legally point to gigabyte (what's if after warranty I have to repair my notebook and can't find any Samsung? Can't use even warranty? This is legally pointless, the notebook MUST be compatible with rams that reach specs in few words any stick which has a jedec 2666mhz profile... All these rams have it but no hoot.... Only boots if one stick Samsung is in but due to different jedec profiles and timings they meet all a compromise with same jedec timings on a 1200mhz configurations... It's now obvious to all that whoever installed different rams did something upon multiple restarts that bypassed somehow the gigabyte checks on startup, in fact they all have the same problem again after each bios update ... So don't mind about changing rams... It's all about gigabyte and bios .. just let's do a multiple complaint to gigabyte or an official petition to unlock next bios release for ram compatibility)

LOL, dream on. GB won't fix things even when their own employees acknowledge the problem.

Just submit my laptop for another service. Left fan producing weird whining sound Aero 15x v8.
Based on my service center experience, since my last trouble with my SSD there are quite a number of v8 that also have SSD Failure.

    Greetings,

Has anyone run into an issue resetting their Aero? I just tried and am getting...

"There was a problem resetting your PC"
    "No changes were made"

    Anyone else see this?

    Is there an easy fix?

Are there any issues installing from USB/Media Creation Tool?

    Thanks!!!!

I figured this out. Looks like Gigabyte disabled the normal Windows reset function. If you choose reboot options (I think), you get to a Gigabyte reset option. Works as expected.

Hello, I wonder if any one can help me.

I have a Gigabyte Aero 15 X9. I have had it since March 2019 and am very happy with it, except, I have just started coding again and the ;/: key is very hard to use.

I hadn't noticed before as I don't use it a huge amount when not coding. I am pretty sure I tested every key when I received it.

Has anyone else had this issue with this or other keys? Is there a fix I can implement? I don't really want to send it back over one key.

How easy are they to remove, in case something has got itself lodged under it. Does anyone have any instructions on how to do so?

    Thanks.

Is the TB3 just TB3 or it also has USB-C functionality?

is this the one which is stock in new oled 2019 models, right?

anyone is there anyone who modded successfully bios or got any kind of improvements or achievements with the RTX 2070 MaxQ model? Normally it's limited to 80w-90w, what are your timespy results with this model and who achieved better and how? anyone undervolting or creating a fixed voltage with afterburner?

This is after all useless since all vrms are tested max.for 100w tdp and also cooling system will never do it.

Official 1070 and 2070 full specs are 170w, 1070 2079 maxq range from 80,90,100 and max 115w, all bios flash ends with hardware limiting tdp as forced by bios manufacturer and it doesn't work properly , example I flashed on rtx 2070 a 115w bios, all is recognized it constantly gives 115w usage at max 300mhz at 0,6v and never raises temps cause hardware is limited and bios go crazy cause doesn't understand and communicate well with vBIOs, from what I can say there is no risk flashing even wrong bios, even different boards, it just won't work, in some cases will get unrecognised hardware and giving 0mhz and GPUZ doesn't red it well, just reflash stock bios.... Example, Alienware 2070 in area 51m is a full sized laptop with 170w thermal cryo design and can handle it, if you flash on M15 r2 which max go to 100w it will probably flash well, just go crazy vrm, bios limits to 100w anyway, and even if it works you will get 110° and even 115 w and burn everything... Just useless to try to do it for whatever manufacturer... Will never work

Also consider difference is marginal, example? I get 15.000 firestrike and 6500 timespy with 100w tweaked 2070max q.... The best twekead area 51m with 180w full 2080 (2080!!!!!!! 180w) makes 8500 timespy and 18500 firestrike... Same goes for msi ge65 and 75... All other 2070 maxq from Asus and hp and razer make even worse (zsame results of 206p rtx max 6700 timespy and 13000 firestrike)... So in my opinion just use a 1070 or 207o max q in a thin laptop trying to get max 100w and temps under control with CPU undervolt, thermal pads, liquid metal, gpu curve at sweet spot (usually from 0,75 to 0,8,v and the maximum frequencies for each voltage step for a 100w design) and you get the max out of any laptop producer (actually 15% more for a stock 9750h and 2070maxq, as close as to full 2070 and even 2080... Really no need to go over and prefer and this and cold laptop maybe with oled 4k display. If you look at my updated results in my drive you will get astonished... Just as close as to a 3500 eur area 51m and better of all razer blade 17 pro and M15 r2 and hp omen... Better then all, 4k oled at only 1800 eur with a 2070max 512ssd 16gb ram? You use the extra saved money for 32gb memory and 2x2tb ssds and liquid metal and thermal pads and make undervolt and vBIOs flash and tuning and you get a 300% times more loaded workstation with more memory and space and a real winner as desktop replacer with difference that it's still tiny and small and with best of the best screen... Just for comparison my 3500 main rig with 9900ks and 2080ti all oberxlocked and 32 GB rams at 4000mhz low cas gets just the double in each score and game... Which is useless in 1080pz. And prefer to play on laptop everywhere, noticing that laptop makes max 100w gpu and 50w CPU still has the same power of my desktop which costs the double and makes 200w CPU 380w gpu... Not considering space and extra to buy mouse keyboard monitor speakers etc.... The aero 15 2019 oled line is an absolute winner and reap horsepower workstation gaming station at a fraction of cost, just need some tuning.... Tomb raider shadow version heavyest game at the moment played with RTX ultra shadows all maxed out and you make 66fps average? Even MSI ge65 9sf which was the winner of all gaming laptop makes 58 fps in that test and with highest preset not maxed as my test... Really... Tested all laptops, aero 15 oled tweaked 2019 line is the best for everyonez even pc gamers...

Really looking at my review and drive pictures everyone will get surprised, even an Alienware area51m 2080 rtx user will get pissed off .. also considering how beautiful at thin aero is and the fact that has the best keyboard and full size and best touchpad among all of these (after installing proper drive) also consider m15 r2 even uses still 2400mhzz here we have 2666... No way...

Also ending up that more than 100w vBIOs in thin laptop is useless so just stop trying, just get it tweaked getting the maximum out of your 90w or 100w

Updated screens... Just amazing testing and review

Just an example of real gaming and real power, to see how a smal cost still tiny laptop can be better of a huge 3500 model with 2070 full or 2080 full, look at the following:
1725mhz real clock graphic card and 1650 MHz memory (6600mhz GDDR6 or 13200 MHz gbps as reported in standard specs).

100w card, CPU always at 4ghz all cores, other drop to 3,3ghz, full card of 170w drop due to heat, and they are also noisy, this say chill with no fan noise

Temps never go over 70°C even with super clocked and performing CPU and GPU with CPU always at 4ghz 12 thread 6 cores.

And you get more than 100fps with highest preset test that all reviewers do for shadow of tomb raider and more than 66 average fps with maxed out graphic all effects on a effects moved to ultra over the highest preset and manually set anisotropic at 16x and with RTX shadows set to ULTRA, screen below, this is something even a desktop can't achieve and we have this at overall system power consumption of 150w, look at afterburner stats on screen to get the meaning of this words... Really can't say more... Even an area 51m due to high heat and big case and cost and watt usage and overall similar performance can't stay at competition with this, considering that it's one of the few real 4x thunderbolt 3 laptop where others limit it to 2x without saying it and also this has the fastest uhs ii reader... Really no words guys
