Overwatch is not a demanding game...

The answer is "it will depend on the game". https://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphics-Cards.13849.0.html may help you a bit (there are 1080p ultra and 2160p high benchmarks so 1440p would be in-between)

Playing Forza Horizon 3 the Aero 15 struggles at keeping stable 60 fps on a 1080p display and high graphics. There are regular framerate drops to 55 fps or even below sometimes.
So with this game you can forget about 1440p or you'll have to turn down graphics settings.

I think the GTX 1060 is very good for 1080p gaming now and in the future but it is definitely not future-proof for 1440p gaming.

The eGPU you mentionned may be a solution for the future but afaik nobody tried one with the fixed BIOS so we don't even know how good or bad an external GTX 1070 or 1080 would work on the Aero 15...

Truthfully I would happily pay for an Aero 15 with a GTX1070MQ if I were getting it now as I see it as reasonable value when considering the form factor.

Nice to see Gigabyte offering that option to consumers. I just hope they market the laptop in all their promotional material as it being an MQ version of the 1070 and not the standard version.

Would be curious to see overclocking headroom. I know in the 1060 Aero 15, you run into power limits long before you run into temperature limits. The cooling system in the Aero 15 is very robust.

Is there any way to unlock voltage control on the GPU on the aero 15?

Have tried with afterburner but no luck thus far.

    Nope...unless you use a programmer.
However you can lock the voltage at 800mV using AB voltage curve.

Yo what about the screen? Not necessarily waiting on max-q but 4K. Any information on that?

In all honesty, I believe that the 15x isn't a worthy upgrade since all you are getting is an upgrade to the GTX 1070-MaxQ. Considering the price difference between a new Aero 15 vs 15x (~$1000 if I were to use the 2399 price from the review site above), you can get an Aorus Gaming Box for ~$600 while also having the built in gtx1060.

The price difference might be less for the US, but I couldn't find said price anywhere.

EDIT: From the quote below, my argument does not hold grounds unless you consider having both the gtx 1060 + 1070 vs just the 1070MQ

Eletronics are more expensive in Europe, so to compare, it would be best to use European retail price ($2099), which would be 300 euros difference, the difference should be about the same in the US, but in dollars, i.e. $300. I am speculating though, other OEM´s have been charging $200 (or a little more) for the 1070MQ over the 1060.

Hello! So, I've been looking through this forum as I've heard a lot about Ctrl+Shift+Various Key-combos not working, even after updates? People say that the update fixed some combos but not all. However, the newest info I can find on this is from ~4 months ago; Does anybody know the status of this now? I've heard about things like that there was a recall and that they fixed it since, or that there never was a recall, and I just really want to know for sure because I am very seriously considering purchasing this laptop within the next couple of weeks, since it seems like a very nice laptop, especially considering all alternatives.

    Thanks in advance!

There have been updates, but I think the last was a few weeks ago.
I think it also depends on the batch + your usage. For example, I have little use of ctrl+shift+key controls, and the ones I use work fine. The only one that didn't work for me was ctrl+shift+down (which registers as ctrl+shift+up). This is remedied by using the right side ctrl+shift keys rather than the left. It is kind of annoying, but again, I have no use for that particular combination.

The max-q version is only £100 more compared to the normal Aero 15.

On the other hand, an overclocked desktop 1070 is more powerful than the underclocked/undervolted mobile 1070 Max-Q. If you are running an external QHD, for example, the gaming box is still worth a look. Honestly the 1060 is a pretty good pairing for an FHD screen. I'd wait to see notebookcheck's review before pulling the trigger on the 1070 Max-Q version, as they will likely have a good comparison between 15 and 15x for frame rates, noise, temps, etc. We may also find there are other tweaks and updates in the 15x.

What I did was clone my current SSD to the new one then just simply swap SSD spots.
You may not actually need to swap the spots for the SSDs. You may just be able to instruct the new to be the main one in the BIOS or at boot screen.

As for software, you can try Samsung data migration if your new SSD is a samsung which you say it is.
Or any other ones listed here along with a small walkthrough on how to use.

If you really want to cheat, put a windows 10 image on a boot usb stick.
Let it load into the install and format your older SSD from there.
Just be sure its the old one.

This should get you past your problem.

    Hope this trick helps.

I did this and I still only get one drive to show up regardless of what M.2 slit they are in. If the LiteOn SSD is in the computer it boots from there regardless of the order in the BIOS. I'm thinking they are using the same lanes....

Did you at least create a backup USB with their recovery software before you did this? If not you might be able to download the tool and do that on a separate machine then try and reboot into it.

So I just ordered my Aero yesterday and received it today.. OF COURSE when I come here I read about a newer version on the way.. it HAD TO HAPPEN! LOL.

Anyway.. as it turns out I did not get 2 x 256GB drives (even though that was what the reseller said it would be); I got 1 x 512GB.
RAM: I was expecting 2 x 8GB but when I look under Task Manager - Performance - Memory it says I have 16 GB and 1 slot of 4 is used.
    My question is:
I thought the Aero had 2 slots.. for a max of 32GB?? Why would it say 1 slot of 4 is used....?

    Thanks frostwarefx..
I bought from pclinkshop - sadly the icky orange and no games but since the wall is the only thing that "sees" the orange 99% of the time, and given that I'm not a gamer to start with, I decided I could live with both issues, and I opted for the savings rather.

I don't know if this problem is restricted to us South Africa Aero owner, but it is over 24 hours later and I am STILL trying to finish updating the drivers. Several times a driver gets to a certain point and no further with the download..
So from my experience "Smart update" is ANYTHING BUT!
    Really frustrated and annoyed...

Downloads with Smart Update are terribly slow. It's faster when downloading from the product support page and selecting the FTP in your region.
But Smart Update is the only way to get the newest drivers as soon as they get released. The product support page is updated a few days later.

    hello all,

Last week I have purchased an aero 15 in the US through newegg. I generally like and satisfied with the new machine except one issue: it seems to be very slow to boot and wake up from sleep (I have cleared it from bloatware). The wake up time is often more than 5secs which is significantly longer than on my 5 years old dell XPS. disappointing. I seem to recall from reviews I read that the aero 15 has a rather slow SSD. Is that right and if yes does that explain the slow boot/wake up times?

I noticed on this thread that some people have upgraded to Samsung EVO 960 SSDs, does that solve the problem? Are there some practical guides about the upgrade? Does this upgrade lead to noticeable performance gains (first hand experience reports would be much much appreciated) with respect to boot and wake up times?

    best, BS

    With the 960 Evo:
    - Boot up: 14 seconds to reach the login screen (then the session loading time depends on your default programs at startup so hard to compare*)
    - Sleep: 6-10 seconds
    - Wake up: 4 seconds

    * For me it's an additionnal 35 seconds (14 + 35 = ~50 seconds) to load my Windows session + many programs including Firefox and Outlook (see in attachment) so it's clearly not optimized for boot time. I only start it up once a day so it's not a big deal

I have an NVME SSD, the Toshiba XG4. It's not as fast as a 960 Evo but it is faster than the stock SATA drive.

Unfortunately wake from sleep time for me is still at least 5 seconds also.

As a result, I've set it to not sleep when plugged in; it's not ideal but it's the only workaround I've got that doesn't involve having to wait 5 seconds every time I return to my desk from whereever.

Does Aero 15 support upgrading to 2666 mhz or 3000 mhz ram?

Never mind, I asked the newegg chat guy and he confirmed 2666 the max speed.

It will be based off the chipset and from what I saw poking around the bios, there is no option to enable XMP profiles.

Somewhere back in this thread, there was a solution posted on how to hack Windows Precision drivers onto the Aero 15. I did it and it's much much better.

However, I can't remember who made the post, nor how to do it myself, so you'll probably just have to go digging through the thread =\

Maybe do a search for "Windows Precision" or "trackpad" - it should come up.

Got this laptop just last week, and it's a huge step up from my now defunct Asus G46VW, but I've run into quite a big problem.

Smart Manager worked at first, but I believe my antivirus, BitDefender, broke it. I've completely uninstalled BitDefender for the time being, but Smart Manager still refuses to work, no matter how I uninstall and reinstall it.

    I've tried:
uninstalling -> installing version 6.7.9 manually -> restarting
uninstalling -> installing version 6.9.7 beta manually -> restarting
uninstalling -> installing version 6.9.9 from Smart Update -> restarting

None of these work. I've also put in a support ticket for the issue, but all the person said was that either an antivirus program or Logitech software are interfering with it, but I don't see how that makes sense. I do have the Logitech Gaming Software for my mouse and headset, but I've tried doing all those installations I mentioned with that software not opening at system startup, so I don't know what to do.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

Unfortunately, this doesn't apply to my issue. The post you linked is about someone fixing their ELAN mousepad driver issues, but mine is with Smart Manager software itself. All of my drivers are up to date, the only thing I haven't updated is the BIOS because I'm not sure if I should do that through Smart Update or from the Gigabyte support page. I doubt that updating my BIOS will fix my Smart Manager issue, though.

What happens exactly when you double click on the Smart Manager exe?
    Nothing happens? The app crashes?

Is there GBSMV2.exe in the Tasks manager when lauching Smart Manager?
When you say "restarting" is it the PC or the program?

Did you try uninstalling it, clean the register entries with ccleaner, reboot the computer, and install it again?

When I run it (both as regular user and admin), my mouse cursor shows that the app loads, then my screen quickly switches between the different "color profiles" that are normally available through Smart Manager, then nothing loads. When I look for GBSMV2.exe in Task Manager, I see that it starts up, but then closes itself out. When looking in Event Viewer, I see that Windows reported that it crashed with some info that doesn't really help me figure out the cause.

I even opened up the Windows crash dump file in Windbg, which still didn't provide any insight on the issue.

When I said "restarting", I meant restarting the laptop. When I uninstalled Smart Manager in those scenarios I mentioned, I used CCleaner before rebooting and after rebooting to clear out any leftover registry entries, so what I did more specifically was:
uninstall -> clear leftover registry entries with CCleaner -> reboot the laptop -> clear leftover registry entries with CCleaner again -> install Smart Manager -> reboot the laptop.
    The issue still persists :(
Wish Gigabyte's support team would respond faster than maybe one message per week.

    Thanks for the clarification.
I'm afraid I can't help more about this as it seems to me you did everything right so far :/

Since you already bothered uninstalling BitDefender, you could also uninstall the Logitech software just to be sure but as you said, that doesn't make much sense.
