    Intel 9900KS $599 on Newegg. $652.21 Norwegian Premium.

    AMD Ryzen 9 3950X should be around $749 and Norvegian Premium $978.97 without chips in stock.

    I thought @TANWare found a $400 TRX40 motherboard? There will likely be a couple / few that are for barebones service - affordable workstation basics.

    So $1400 + $400 = $1800. Of course you gotta add the rest, good stuff too, so not cheap, but really - peanuts.

    My desktop workstation builds have always been far more expensive - you guys are so spoiled with such cheap performance.

    You'll save a bunch if you aren't also adding in a Gaming GPU - no 2080ti garbage needed (another $1500 saved), get a nice serviceable RX5500 / RX5700 / RX5700XT for quick gaming while waiting for renders / jobs / batched tasks - there are enough cores to go around. :)

    Freaking amazing, really. Maybe $2500-$4000 for a cheap / nice build - before dedicated project hardware, and that's incredibly cheap!!
    No problem buddy, just hang in there with your CC handy, form filled out, Order button pulsating in the Dark - ready for the In Stock alert - then BANG!! You've landed one!!

    What a great way to move from Intel HEDT, AMD really came through. And, these are the Mid-tier HEDT product... :)

    Poor Intel, What can they do?... Build a Fire and Sing a Couple of Songs?

    Price gouging on Ebay (aka retailers) is not AMD's fault though despite supply problems (which is mainly TSMC's issue).
    Nothing says that a price of something needs to automatically go up because the supply is low or its scarce.
    In case of scarcity, you overcome it by making a viable substitute which can be produced in sustainable abundance using superior synthetic materials... but since Capitalism doesn't work like that, you're stuck with the existing inefficient system and methods of production, along with price gouging by retailers who think they can raise prices in case an item is perceived to be 'scarce'.

    I wouldn't buy an item just because its scarce nor pay a premium for it - unnecessarily dangling around debt in the current system.
    I'd prefer to wait until it becomes available in regular quantities, something else comes along, or get something much cheaper right now so I can work with it and wait until I can upgrade.

    Big difference between 979 and 1,800. Also most item locations are USA. The gouging is not AMD, bein honest from the get go is. They should just say it may be 6 months before a TR CPU shows up or what ever it is.

    Cost is a secondary consideration when the silicon just does not exist on the market. Who will buy a MB for a non obtainable CPU?

    These kill intel's offering by a landslide... What are the main uses for so many cores tho? I'd assume rendering but there is a drop off in additional core efficiency right?

    It's weird, as until you have them sitting there humming away, you might not know what you can do with them - it's a growing / learning experience.

    You don't know what to do with them because, you don't know what to do with them...

    But, you can learn how to use them, and with so much out there today to learn and do there's really nothing holding you back from rapidly growing into an HEDT Workstation - if you put in the time with great effort and persistence. And, I mean likely like nothing you've done before - it can be life changing.

    Start small until you run out of performance or bottleneck, then upgrade, repeat.

    I've had large core compute access for decades - starting with 1->8 CPU's in Multi-CPU UNIX in 1985(!), of course that was much more of an "event" back then. Physical size can be imposing, until you look at the performance compared to today.

    Today on the desktop it's much different - more visceral - it's like - I'm doing so much yet I have "idle" cores, wait what??!! "sleeping" cores?? - I can pike on the applications, tests, builds, compute tasks, while browsing with 4 browsers - each with dedicated features / reasons for running in parallel, and then the VM's.

    It's very freeing, even if you simply marvel at how responsive what you do now on 4c/8t performs on 8c/16t, and then going up from there.

    But yeah, for most people that don't have a large repertoire of tasks built up over many years to throw at such hardware, it will take time to do so, but much less time than it took me...

    If you have some project software that runs on servers, that's a good place to start. Remember to get plenty of local storage to get the dataset local - don't try to hang off of network storage and think you'll load up the cores, a local dataset copy on super fast PCIE 4.0 / RAID for processing is important.

    The problem with so many cores ends up being figuring out how to optimize the build to feed the cores and let them dump their results without bottle-necking them.

    Truly I am waiting to see what comes of software once this many cores of such high caliber are wide-spread.

    Even games may benefit down the road. Heck, even today you can game on the idle cores within a gnats whisker of a 9900k's top FPS - especially at 1400p / 2160p, while churning out work on the rest of the cores.

    Real gaming changing CPU's... ;)

    Sheesh, KitGuruTech ran their AMD TR3's on AIR cooling re-using the Wraith Ripper from x399 - and still beat out the new Intel x299 CPU's on WATER cooling!!

    Are you kidding? AMD has NOTHING competitive on the high end GPUs yet and from what I've seen Nvidia is still the go to for built in decoder/encoder engines. This is a mix in software support for the GPUs and what standards the GPUs support for hardware acceleration. It can do well in resolve, but had an issue of errors which may be resolved by now. But the performance of the 5700XT doesn't do as well as the 2080 Ti or Titan RTX in workloads.

    Hell, software support and less information about the encoder/decoder is why I picked up a 1660 cheap after the super dropped for a Plex hardware accelerator. Not worth waiting for the 5500XT.

    So until RDNA gen 2 comes out next year (which Ampere may be coming out in the spring or could be delayed, I've heard both rumors over the past couple months and pretty sure Nvidia is peddling misinformation to the rumor mill), there is no reason to grab AMD consumer hardware unless buying in at below the RTX 2070 Super price point.

    Speaking of price points, after seeing the 10940X overclocked in HU's review, it is dropped from my recommendation, making the 10980XE the only recommended chip in their lineup, and it being based on memory bandwidth and PCIe needs.

    So, its not the issue of whether the software employs coding which discriminates against AMD cpu's... the issue is we are never told which software employs it and whether or not its switched on by default or not, and if it is, that it should have an option to disable 'Cripple AMD CPU' coding.

    That kind of coding shouldn't even exist.
    Software should automatically execute in the best possible manner on any CPU if the said hw has the coding which supports it... if AMD doesn't have AVX512, fine, but don't actively prevent the software from utilising AMD hw to the fullest.

    I wonder if this is happening to a similar degree in the gaming industry...

    1) Intel was sued and AMD won on a similar incident where the Intel compiler purposely gimped AMD performance. Ruled as antitrust violation.

    2) there is bad coding in the world. So not every time this is found is it purposeful.

    3) this needs investigated as to when the code was implemented that made it switched in by default. This can tell us if we are in situation 1, where Intel is getting the software companies to purposely gimp AMD performance, including looking into Intel proposed optimizations if Intel's software development division recommended a specific commit or not, or of we are in situation 2, where a code just forgot to add the logic switch for the hardware flags for AMD.

    Edit: after seeing it is the Intel MKL, Intel is doing shady **** and AMD should look deeper and possibly being legal action.

    32 core cpu is using 8 core chiplets x4 right? so its almost as efficient as the 24 core cpu due to better silicon similar to 3950x?

    3970 is slightly less efficient. The reason is both share the same L3 cache size so more cache per core for the 3960x.

    1.) Intel was sued yes, but the final result (aka the payment AMD got) was rather paltry/anemic in comparison to the damage Intel did (namely, AMD got a relatively small sum of money - and many people to this day haven't even heard of AMD (I just recently assembled an all AMD gaming machine for a friend's son, and she had no idea AMD as a company existed, or that it would be a better option for gaming - especially in regards to saving money and upgrades down the line).

    2.) That should be addressed at the source and standards need to be in place to prevent software from favouring one hw over the other. If a hw doesn't have instruction sets built in like AVX512, fine, but as I said (and continue to maintain), that shouldn't prevent hw from running at its full potential.
    Software in general should be open-source based as its a lot more flexible (while being just as capable) than closed-source and ensures it will work across all platforms.

    3.) Given how long Intel held the 'performance crown'/market dominance, the company had time to permeate virtually every facet of the market to implement this coding to one degree or another with software devs (even in professional software, developers primarily write code with Intel hw in mind, not AMD).

    Looking at games, we saw that when patches were released for Ryzen, performance jumped... suggesting that certain games may have been ported/coded with Intel CPU's in mind from the get go.

    I cut my computing teeth on the Connection Machine CM-2 (which was, depending upon how you looked at it, 64K single bit processors or or 2K 32/64 bit processors) and at one point probably had the fastest FFT, something like 13 GFlops single precision or 7 double. Of course, any halfway respectable phone blows that out of the water these days, but 3 decades will do that. More recently, when I was at Oracle, I worked on the M7-16. Think 16 Epyc 7742's in a box, except that instead of 2 hyperthreads/core there were 8. Then think about that little beastlet running a single system image.

    A TR would make a pretty nice CI/CD system for hosting a whole stack of projects. The weakness of the 3950X for that kind of work is the low memory ceiling; 64GB, even 128GB, is going to get tight for really big integration jobs; the CPU horsepower is way OTT (this is why I'd like to see a 3955X, with the HEDT memory and I/O capacity).

    More often than not in the industry, compute power has outstripped I/O. There have been a few exceptions; the VAX had pretty good I/O but not amazingly impressive compute power as I recall, and what really distinguished mainframes was the I/O capacity.

    Think rendering farm in a box, not just single project. Or large scale software development. With that much horsepower, you could really ramp up testing, for instance.

    It's a constant cycle of large iron migrating into small form factors with each native IO being the differentiator. How do you get the data in / out quickly - large data sets and distributed computing vs localized computing and data - moving it inside and outside the physical boundaries with which IO can move quickest.

    That's why AM4 needs to be upgraded next to allow the IO to catch up to the compute, just like TR4 was upgraded to TRX40 (/ TRX80?)

    TB+ memory isn't really needed in AM4+ consumer, but HEDT TRX40 currently limited to 256GB can use it. Sun Servers with 64GB => 128GB => 256GB => doubled into 512GB 10+ years ago now.

    From Honeywell, Burroughs, HP, DEC, and starting with Sun in 1981 in various installations for clients Sun was one of the reliable high points for many years growing out the Arpanet => Internet, and still is today through Oracle.

    BBN Arpanet NP / IP/TCP, Packet Radio, Ethernet, Hyperchannel, Cray, CM, IBM AIX, Supercomputers, Sun, Apple, IOS, Android, all in under 40 years. With many times more stuff in between.

    That's just it. The things we worked on 40+ years ago are being introduced as if they are new now to consumers, and it looks to most consumers like super fast paced innovation.

    To me it's been a long drawn out introduction. And, after all that time you find that you have to have a lot of patience to watch technology roll out into the real world. It happens a lot more slowly than you first imagine.

    We may have been very fortunate to be where we were when it happened, but moving forward it's everywhere for everyone, that's the best part about it. :)

    This was bound to happen. I said the 3950x would be the new golden hens tooth of the AM4 lineup. What I did not expect was an outright lie by AMD in stating the 3960x and 3970x would be available alongside the 3950x and the fact there are no such CPU's available anywhere. No one I can find has ever had them in stock, not a single one.

    I wonder if AMD will grab most of their best dies for their most expensive SKUs. Means 3950X will come last. This way they can sell more of their new High end Chipset as well. Less money in mainstream now because the new chips can be used with older MB. There is several ways up to Heaven (increased earnings) :)

    I do not know about that, while a few TRX40 boards are around it does not seem to be a flooded market. Since the chips are non existant I am sure the sales of boards are low, if the chip supply were plentiful then boards may become few and far between. While lack of TR2 is not speculative the reasoning is until AMD comes clean.

    I expect there is several models of boards from each MB manufacturer and this is overwhelming vs amount chips.

    Regarding the shortage of chips... It does not help to increase order volume for the time being. If it's tight now, then it won't be any better on short sight.

    If you need a very fast CPU without breaking the bank, there's the 16-core Ryzen 3950x (aka "baby Threadripper") at $750. It's actually a bit faster than Intel's newest 18[core @ $999]."

    On top of this, the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and the Ryzen Threadripper 3970X HEDT processors are following suit, having launched two nights ago, and already being completely unavailable. As of right now, the only way to get these higher-end processors is to go through a PC builder website, which will significantly increase the cost as you will be paying for a full computer rather than just a single component.

    The lower end are about, the higher end ones are not. Since the release of the 3950x the 12 core is no longer the hens tooth although they are still pretty high in demand.

    Not good, but this has been going on ever since the chips were released. And Intel is having its own supply problems. One effect of the (welcome) competition is that the technology is being pushed hard, but a side effect of that is that they're pushing the process and manufacturing limits.

    I rather wish they'd release the 3900 (non-X) to the retail channel. It's a little slower than the 3900X, but they probably have a better supply of chiplets that can run at that frequency, and it would still be an awesome chip in the $400-$450 range.

    Huh... I would imagine that 64GB of RAM would be more than enough to last years for CI/CD systems.
    128GB could easily last over 5 years.
    Plus, lets not forget that Zen 3 will be released next year (2020), so, if we get a core increase alongside IPC/clock/efficiency improvements (which seems possible if AMD takes advantage of the density increase in the 7nm EUV), there's also a chance AMD could increase the RAM ceiling too on the replacement part for 3950x on Zen 3, and you can just use Zen 2 right now and get close to the max RAM, and upgrade later on to Zen 3 equivalent replacement with more RAM support with a simple BIOS update.

    I would not count on the update with a simple bios. 2020 is about here and with the silicon shortage it would not surprise if theses become 2021 chips or beyond. Also as of late AMD is not as honest as it has been before. x399 took the first hit, now no initial available silicon in 3960x or 3970x in the retail space at release is the next victim. Without new 7nm silicon till mid next year the 3880x and 3990x may be the next victims along with Zen3 following.

    Depends upon what your integration tests are doing -- if they are creating lots of VMs themselves, you could blow through 64GB in a hurry.

    Assuming AMD does stick with AM4 for one more generation, going beyond 64/128GB may be difficult.

    As far as AM4, if at only 4 dims with a max of 32gb a stick of DDR4, 128 GB is the limit.

    That depends upon the availability of 64GB DIMMs. It may be that a 6xx chipset will be needed to use those DIMMs, but certainly not everyone needs that.

    I have to question on the number of people creating massive amounts of VM's with huge RAM requirements.
    Even so, blowing through 64GB quickly might be doable indeed, but through 128GB?
    Not what I would consider practical for most home users.
    The amount of work involved to blow through 64GB alone will be really big... nevermind 128GB.

    I still maintain that 128GB limit should be large enough for the foreseeable timeframe even for massive RAM requirements when working with 16c/32 thread CPU... but if you may need even more RAM, wouldn't Threadrippers be a better choice for that?
    I mean, that's what they are for are they not?

    Most users who stick to AM4 platform probably won't need more than 64/128GB RAM even with large workloads (at least not for the time being).

    Most people are barely upgrading their systems to 64GB if they can afford it... I don't see too many systems or users with 128GB (even though some are probably out there), mainly because getting that kind of RAM amount can increase the overall costs of the platform by quite a lot.
    16GB to 32GB is kind of a 'standard' today for a gaming/productivity platform. 64GB would be considered 'optimal' for video editing as After Effects alone can chew through the RAM easily (as can 3d rendering)... but 128GB?
    Hm... useful yes, but right now, I'd say its a bit of an 'overkill'.

    For most people, certainly. But think about, say, someone who's developing Kubernetes and wants a local multi-node cluster without having to use external cloud infrastructure. You may not need the amount of processing power a TR offers, but you're going to need a good amount of memory. It's doable on my 4-core i7-6820HQ with 64GB RAM (with 3 master nodes and 3 workers), but those have to be pretty small nodes with not a lot of RAM to spare, so I'm not going to be able to run many even quite small pods on them. 128GB would help a lot, and 256GB would be a cinch, but I don't need more than 12-16 Ryzen 3 cores, which are much faster than my old mobile Skylake ones.

    If something can "chew through [64GB] easily", it's not far from chewing through 128GB (a factor of 2 is pretty small potatoes).

    The thing here too, is AMD wants 16 core TR users to now consider AM4 as their new platform. There then are the platform limitations. You also have to remember we are talking in any of thses situations as specific and specialized use cases.

    The TRX40 boards seem to support 8 DIMMs, as did the x399, but support 256GB total instead of just 128GB!

    In that case, get Zen 2 16c/32th and go with 128GB. Chances are it will last you a while. Possibility exists you will be able to double that to 256GB with Zen 3, however, its not a guarantee as we don't know if its mobo that's limited or just down to CPU support (my bet is the mobo can support it, its the CPU that needs to be designed with higher RAM support).
    With TR you have that guarantee (and yes, even though the non-TR 16c/32th CPU has more than enough horse power for you, fact is, Zen 2 atm doesn't support more than 128GB, so you'd be stuck with that RAM, especially if Zen 3 doesn't increase RAM support).

    Might as well go with an entry level Zen 2 TR and 128GB RAM to get you 'started' and then upgrade to more RAM and possibly Zen 3 TR if/when the need arises.

    On a side note, its worth mentioning that AMD considers Zen 3 a 'brand new uArch'.
    I would imagine that kind of change would in fact bring with it changes to include higher RAM support, but as I said, there are no guarantees.

    In this video, we're only looking at motherboards we know are acceptable for AMD #Ryzen CPUs, eliminating the bottom-of-the-barrel boards to establish a baseline level of quality.

    If you're trying to figure out what motherboard to use for your new AMD Ryzen system, particularly with the Ryzen 3000 series (e.g. R5 3600 or R9 3950X), this motherboard guide rounds-up what's worth considering and talks about suitable VRMs for the newer CPUs.

    Note that not every board on this list should be paired with the 3950X, as it has stricter VRM requirements than the lower-end CPUs due to the increased core count.

    You have 4 slots. For consumer ram, the highest capacity per DIMM is 32GB. I don't expect it to support much more than that. Even though it supports ECC, I'm doubting supporting higher capacity memory. It is a completely different I/O die than the EPYC and TR platforms.
