I consider this the first time that a laptop can be meaningfully upgraded form lets say a 6700K quadcore to a 8700K six core (even though with some modding). Before that an upgrade would only be meaningful if you bought th elaptop originally with lets say a core I3 or something and upgrade to a core I7 from the same generation. Intel always locked users down During the "tick" part of their CPU launches.

In general the MXM boards still are so expensive that they are even more pricey than a full motherboard replacement of a BGA system. I would have applauded MXM boards more if they where priced in a similar fashion to their desktop counterparts. But near 1000usd for a single 1080MXM board even pre-crypto prices is ridiculous and I refuse to pay that for a non flagship board. A desktop 1080TI and Even Titan Xp are priced lower than that. So in the end after 2 or 3 years its pretty much imo more beneficial to just buy a new laptop.

Clevo and MSI would have a future imo when they would offer better made products. But now I would need to spend about 3000 euro on for example an MSI Titan but the chassis itself feels like a 800 euro laptop, Its plastic fantastic all over and its filled with compromises. They needed to fix the flex in the middle of the chassis, Do you know how they fixed that? By sticking multiple rubber blocks on top of eachother and glued that into the chassis. This is just piss poor design! Even then with twice the thickness it cannot cool an 8950HK out of the box well and similar to the twice as thin AW17R5 for example. The only good laptops from MSI are imo the Stealth series such as the GS65. Same goes for Clevo, they need to fix the shells of their laptops. The insides are good, good motherboards, decent cooling, not so good batteries though, but they ruin it by putting it into a horrible plastic chassis. People want better for their money. Next to that, it also depends Nvidia if they will keep supporting MXM in some way or another.

Also watercooling in a laptop is useless imo, then just buy a desktop......but thats my opinion.

But most points made here are simply because Intel has not made any good strides the past decade in terms of CPU power. If they did, those older systems mentioned here would be competitive anymore.

Thats the first time I see one new for under 800. So I dont really consider that common, might be because new cards will be presented today at the Nvidia keynote. Even though Gigabyte stated that the laptop versions will come at the end of this year.

Also that model works only on the recent 2 Clevo barebones. Which brings me to another point, MXM isnt really an universal standard at this time. So it works on the Clevo's but cannot be used in the MSI laptops.

Aorus X5 v8 Thermal Testing - Fixed with Undervolting?
    Jarrod'sTech
    Published on May 29, 2018
The Aorus X5 v8 gaming laptop has some pretty epic specs, including overclocked Intel 8850H 6 core CPU and Nvidia 1070 graphics, but many people have been saying it runs fairly hot or overheats. In this video I’ll test the CPU and GPU temperatures at idle, while gaming, under stress test with stock fan speeds, maximum fan speeds, and then finally with some undervolting applied to see if the thermals can be improved to fix any overheating and increase performance.

    aorus 5 v8 chart 1.jpg
    aorus 5 v8 chart 2 cpu only.jpg
aorus 5 v8 chart 3 cpu only.jpg Spoiler: -150mV undervolt @ 4.3ghz all core reduced temperature / and stopped power limit throttling issues.

Unfortunately he's a bit new at this, and didn't provide a pure 100% CPU load to compare before / after undervolt temperatures, and only gave "gaming" load and AIDA+Heaven - both of which aren't pure CPU tests - this laptop shares cooling between CPU / GPU so load on GPU heats things up too.

The good news is his other real world testing showed power limit throttling resolved, holding higher CPU clocks, and higher performance results in benchmark and games when load is shifted to CPU at lower resolutions.

Not bad for a rare undervolt by reviewer. He came so close to perfect, now he just needs a pure CPU 100% load test to show temperature drop between stock and undervolt.

Pretty amazing getting -150mV undervolt at 6 core 4.3ghz OC too :)

Posted thi sone in anothr thread and this shows again that Intel went a step too far. That system has a 4 heatpipe dedicated heatsink with a fairly large fan for the CPU only. In fact it has exactly the same cooling capacity for the i9 alone as the full Geforce 1080 which is also used in that laptop. The GPU can be cooled very decently and stays at good temperatures. The CPU does not at stock and also not with LM applied. It's just a CPU that cannot be cooled well when overclocked. At stock clocks its more quick than a 8700K but it comes with so much extra heat.

1.45v on a desktop 8700K is also going to make that thing overheat. And in a laptop that's murder.
The Clevo TM1 with the vapor chamber can BARELY handle this.

The Asus has FAR worse cooling than the Clevo Tm1, despite the direct die contact, so it's no surprise that it reaches 100C. THEN you combine a worse binned hotter running "failed" 8700K sample (also these chips are 2 speed bins below LGA as well, at the same mhz), chips that just run hotter, and that is what you get.

If they had done 4500 mhz @ 1.25v on all 6 cores in cinebench, with LM and without stupid duck tape shrouds, then that would have actually been a somewhat educational and less cringe worthy test.

Its LTT, things are done the dumbest way for theatrical effect.

The laptop was slammed flat into a mat without cover, the stock fans where doing more or less nothing with the air intake blocked..

Its not about what happens after but that the laptop put of the box doesnt run without throttling as well. Also even thoigh their methods are questionable at best. The cpu wasnt stable at lower voltages.

What did you expect from reviewers?

I wonder what they will say about Cpu temps in the coming review. And they have still not tested Dell’s advertised Oc profiles. It will be hot. Very hot. And I can’t see the results will be any different than we already have seen.

A bad idea for the indoor climate, bruh. A couple of rounds Cinebench and I have been without the roof and walls o_O Btw... I wonder if the biggest reviewers out there will get cherry picked units from Dell. They are late out with proper reviews of mentioned models so I think Dell have full days work finding some in their shelves who can be used.

I suspect they won't say anything. People will find out after they buy it. Because that's just how they roll. Reviewers facilitate it, unfortunately.
Well, there is nothing special about the ordinary 8700K in my P870DM-G and running stock clocks it will put the lackluster results from the hexacore Alienware into perspective. Both are 17 inch laptops, both hexacore CPUs. The Alienware is designed for it (tongue in cheek, LOL) and the P870DM-G is NOT designed for it. This really showcases how sad things are when dumb-dumbs are allowed to build laptops.

Again, this is stock core clock ratios and cache ratio, default voltage with -28 offset.

    Saw the video.
    Not that impressive.
And they are really thrilled about it.

I get similar results with only voltage offset of -0.140V and the max wattage allowed limitation of -7W in Short Power Max because i prefer power throttle over thermal throttle.

@Papusan Yesterday I noticed strange things on my BGA CPU, I was running some ML code, web browser with 10 tabs or so opened and an old Batman Telltale game, I noticed that temps remained the same at 48C even at 3.3GHz or at 3.1GHz. Is it possible?

Why not? What was the CPU utilization? If the programs are loaded and running the temps depend on the load across the cores in the CPU - if they aren't utilizing the CPU then the CPU temperature can remain low, even near idle temp.

    Yes

The cpu could be busy a few % more cycles to offset a few % lower clockspeed ending up in basically identical average clocks, voltage and power consumption

Ultimately the cpu doesn't care how fast its going, just how many instructions it has to process in order to chug through the workload.

Also, turbo boost clocks and idle states (which change hundreds of times a second) reported in programs are more of a guesstimate than voltage or power draw.

That video is a bit skewed though, in some systems it absolutely does, AMD handles memory quite a bit differently than Intel and it also depends the game itself.

But I dont see any reason why dual channel cant be provided always.

Frequency peaks, thermal peaks, etc "data" peaks - all good reasons to actually turn on logging in hwinfo64 with a 1 sec - 2 sec interval to see the point's in between the high's and lows' - to see where the trend is, high / medium / low.

New Speedshift V2 being fast is a good thing, before we had to run CPU Performance at 100%/100% to get best numbers, now you can use Balanced Perforamnce and get almost every benefit of locking the clocks high all the time.

Along with AMD advances with Precision Boost 2 and XFR2 getting the highest boost when needed these new features mean you can run 0%/100% to keep idle temps down yet get peak performance when needed.

How to Lower Temperatures, Stop Throttling, and Increase Battery Life: The ThrottleStop Guide (2017)
    Douglas Black, 04/15/2017
ThrottleStop is one of the most useful programs for any PC user, but it can be intimidating to use at first glance. This primer walks readers through installing ThrottleStop, explains its basic features such as undervolting and temperature profiles, and guides them through some basic optimizations that any user could benefit from.
    https://www.notebookcheck.net/How-t...ife-The-ThrottleStop-Guide-2017.213140.0.html

"...Click “OK” and navigate to your failsafe profile. This profile is designed to give your CPU a bit of breathing room if temperatures get too hot for your liking, so you probably want to check “Disable Turbo” as well as perhaps increase your Speed Shift EPP value to 128. Now, when your CPU or GPU hit your desired temperature limit, ThrottleStop should automatically switch to the designated profile until the temperatures drop. Once they drop below the threshold, it will automatically return to your default profile...."

Speed Shift EPP 0 - 255, 0 being highest performance, 255 being most power saving...

I used EPP value of 80 that responds to varying quite quickly rather than making cpu stay at max clocks with EPP value 0 (zero).

yes, but it goes to show most software are optimized for dual channel, at least in gaming. i still have a handful of super old legacy software that does better on single channel and single core, pretty amazing.

    Yes, they are soldered (BGA).

Yes, BGA mobile processors are always inferior to a socketed desktop version. They are lower bin quality, lower TDP, limited performance and are permanently installed on crippled motherboards.

But, you can reasonably expect an 8th generation BGA CPU to offer better performance than a 4th generation mobile CPU with 33% fewer cores/threads. It's more a matter of how much castration nonsense you are willing to put up with having a BGA turdbook. The good news is, nobody has to put up with it.

4700MQ was a better CPU than 4700HQ, but that is always the case with LGA versus BGA. BGA is always inferior by design, and intended for use in inferior products.

    Thank you.
But we have a problem. My cousin had come to Turkey. But it was canceled. :(
I'm trying to find a way. I do not want to sell, but can not find a way to bring it, compulsorily I sell it in Arizona Tempe :(

How much would VAT be to have it shipped to you from Arizona, I'm guessing that this is the reason why you haven't had it shipped to you right?

This is a few Cinebench R15 scores from different clock speeds from 7700K (Clevo P870 series). I'm sure you won't see same scores With equal clocks from same gen Kaby BGA (i7-7820Hk). Just ask bro @Falkentyne who have the mentioned unlocked Kaby BGA in his Msibook Gt73.

BGA speed bin will always be at least ONE bin lower than LGA. At least.
for 8950HK its 2 speed bins lower.

My ASUS out of the box (locked at 43) matched your 976 (43). If it doesn't throttle, then BGA = LGA (memory etc all being equal). I haven't run cinebench at 45 but I'm pretty confident it'd be the same. Buy notebooks that don't throttle.

    Me too.
But our only hope is CLEVO.
    GOD i miss my P570WM.

Hope somewhere in the near future we will see a new Xtreem platform with double MXM. :vbcool:
Gave my CLEVO to my dad, bought Zephyrus.
Now i have the same computing power+ with 1\3 of the thickness, 1\3 of the weight, 1\4 of the power demands.

Out of the box? Nope I dont think so. You have probably flipped around the numbers. Since you still have i7 7820HK @ 4.5GHz in sig...

Edit. Maybe run a few CBR-15 benchmarks and post the results. Use 42x, 43x, 44x and 45x. If your chips is able for higher clocks put it in as well. Thanks.
