On the couple of times I called them in CA, they always used "Say - jer" with a "soft G".
hmscott and Robbo99999 like this. -
When I was there 2 weeks ago and asked them. They said it's pronounced:
Say-Ger
Ger like in the word Tiger, but navigations and google and even siri pronounce Ger like in Germany.
And them themselves will use either or depending on who is answering the phones.hmscott, jclausius and Robbo99999 like this. -

I also need to make an edit. The machine in question is not a Clevo re-bran but a Tongfang or Eluktronics-Tongfang re-bran. From what I can gather.

Review of Alienware 17 R5 - The Dreamy Gaming Machine laptop.bg
Alienware is a truly iconic name when talking about gaming. Their laptops have always attracted interest in their alien design and high-end hardware.
This year Alienware 17 R5 comes with the new Core i9-8950HK processor, unlocked for overclocking to 5.00 GHz. The Alienware 17 R5 focuses exclusively on overclocking and extracting maximum performance. Even the video card is factory overclock - rarely found on laptops.
The biggest question is whether cooling will handle this hardware. Let's find out if Alienware 17 R5 is this year's champion.
This is what we call progress. Add in more cores to saturate the well known TRIPOD heatsink with more heat... Domed to fail. I really hope Alienware's next refreshed models comes with Turing graphics or this will be even worse in next review.

I wonder if Alienware wrote the script for the content of the review, or if the reviewer is just a silly person. Or, maybe they just don't know what they don't know?

From those apparently close to Clevo, they overwhelmingly pronounce ODM maker Clevo with a SHORT E vowel sound (via youtube videos and phone calls). ( klev-O ) I found this out when researching my Alienware replacement two years ago.
Linus Sebastian's pronunciation of Clevo is the correct one as far as I know and it's the pronunciation I use.

Walmart originally had their 15+ OP model listed at $1399, then $999, $899 to finally $799. At $1399 it's still cheaper than the same spec'd G2 from Eluktronics. Not that i'm justifying either at that price.
This current price at $799 really screws with my perception of ALL other laptops per price to performance ratio.
I'm a realist and not a content creator that has their closet filled with amazing hardware to review ( I really wanted to word that differently). Regardless of what's to come for BOAT, I have been blue-collar for way too long (if you only knew how old I was lol). No way I want to change that. Doing so would compromise more than just me and the channel.
In other words, I would, and do proudly daily, drive these "cheap" laptops and never feel bad doing so, whatsoever.
With that out of the way! I really want to see some more LGA 15" chassis, like NOW!
Christ! Even my fingers talk the balls off a rhino! -
Old is awesome. I know because I'm old, too. We're both living proof of that. We'll both be going out in a blaze of glory, LOL.
I don't hate BGA any less than before, and maybe more than before, thanks to your videos on those super-cheap Walmart laptops. The Overpowered turdbooks are everything that the others should be starting with the price. That's all any of them are actually worth. Period. Kudos to you and Walmart/Overpowered for putting things into proper financial perspective for the world to see. Those that are smart will be paying attention.
Speaking of cool old guys with YouTube channels, this overclocked old man is really awesome. I found his YouTube channel a while back. I really envy his talent.
Edit: Happy New Year, everyone. May 2019 be filled with blessings for each of you and your families.Last edited: Dec 31, 2018 -
End of the road — Dell will cease production of the Alienware 15 and 17 series
End of the road — Dell will cease production of the Alienware 15 and 17 series (Image source: Vectorstock.com)
These two classic Alienware laptops have reached End-of-Life (EOL) status in order to make room for the thinner, lighter, and sleeker Alienware m15 and m17 successors. The Alienware 17 in particular is being succeeded by both the Alienware m17 and the much more versatile Alienware Area-51m desktop replacement.
After more than six years in the market, the original Alienware 15 and Alienware 17 lineup will go the way of the dodo. Users should not expect an “Alienware 15 R6” or “Alienware 17 R6” anytime soon nor will there any Nvidia Turing updates for existing models.
The news comes on the week of CES 2019 where Dell unveiled its ultrathin Alienware m17 and an updated Alienware m15. The m17 and m15 have effectively replaced the Alienware 17 and Alienware 15, respectively, with graphics options ranging up to the GTX 2080 Max-Q each. These redesigned models are significantly lighter and smaller than their respective counterparts to better compete against the growing range of ultrathin gaming competitors like the Gigabyte Aero 15, Asus ROG Zephyrus GX531, Lenovo Legion Y730, Razer Blade 15 and Blade Pro, Acer Predator Triton 700, and the MSI GS65.
When the original Alienware m15 was announced back in October of 2018, Dell had informed us that the new design would not be replacing the Alienware 15 and that both models would continue to sell concurrently. Unfortunately, we’re only learning now that Dell was referring to just the 2018 calendar year; the m15 series was designed to directly succeed the 15 series all along. Of course, sneaky Dell didn't want to make that info public too early as they would have risked lower sales of the Alienware 15 series throughout the rest of 2018.
Veteran Alienware fans who aren't drawn in by the thinner Alienware m17 can still choose the Alienware Area-51m desktop replacement won't touch the Alienware's. This latter design maximizes performance and serviceability much like on the original Alienware 17 series that it is set to replace.

The new Alienware m17 is essentially the 17-inch version of the existing Alienware m15. Dell will launch the laptop later this month with next generation Nvidia Turing Max-Q graphics.

Alienware has already lost an opportunity with the older, thicker line whose thermal headroom would've fared better with the new Turing GPUs. Any incentive to brand loyalty, at this point, is long gone.
Pushing thin designs to everyone isn't a smart marketing ploy, its' downright suicidal. -

Alienware 15 R1 CPU ISSUE *WARNING* -
Frank Azor stated they would might return with thicker Alienwares with MXM boards again. But nothing has been announced.
Well that means that I have to buy a battery pack for my AW15R3 soon as a spare and keep it stored in a cool palce to have at least a battery pack replacement. Who knows when they stop producing those (if not already).
Might just buy a cheaper gaming laptop again XX60 class and build a small form factor Ryzen system with a 2070 or something for about 1000euro's instead. -

Where are you getting that the current 15 rX and 17rX product lines are being discontinued? I can’t see Alienware going with just the m15 and m17 as these are targeted at a different audience currently unserved by Alienware. -

After AW is tired of M series naming scheme they'll release R1..R5 again.
If chassis thickness is reduced by 7mm on m17, I bet it has got rid of 2.5" in favor of 5x M.2 SSDs, 4 USB ports and SD card slot. Unless they want 2080 SLI on m17x to compete with Clevo.Aroc, Rei Fukai, raz8020 and 1 other person like this. -
Nice to see big laptops also, and not just those laptops getting thinner and thinner ...
How thin does a gaming laptop have to be? If its sitting on the desk, do i really care about 7mm more or less? - i donthmscott likes this. -

Has there been any information about the Nvidia 20xx mobile GPUs having mxm? I haven’t found anything saying MXM is being offered.
Essentially I’m trying to find out if any OEM will offer removable and upgradeable 20xx GPUs.

Area 51M should have desktop hardware (LGA and maybe MXM), but the performance might be severely limited by the firmware.
Dell usually limits the user control over the hardware, with locked firmware and with proprietary control software (even their desktops have restrictions).Vistar Shook, Rei Fukai, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -

Because those links are for the AW m15 (which is BGA).
Things like: upgradeable hardware, Z390 chipset, 9th gen i9 - 8 core CPU, were all mentioned in this article (when it was working):

There’s been leaks that a new Area 51m is replacement for the 15r and 17r families that are now apparently EOL.
So the Area 51m, if real, will be official in the next day or two.

Sorry, I thought you had a typo, and were referring to the "Alienware m15". I see now you were actually asking about an "Alienware Area 51m. The only information I can find on Area 51m is from 2003 - 2005:

They really need to pick a new product design group. The stuff they release just keeps getting uglier with each generation. This one is the worst yet aesthetically... truly tacky-looking design. And, that's just the part on the outside. Lord knows how much they're going to botch up the innards this time.

It looks like there is some speculation about whether it will be another BGA turdbook. Based on their current business model and the small form factor, it is unlikely it will have a desktop CPU or MXM graphics, and equally unlikely (based on their modus operandi) that it will have respectable firmware options, good thermal management or deliver full performance.Last edited: Jan 7, 2019Vistar Shook, Rei Fukai, Aroc and 4 others like this. -

The wild speculation about the CPU and chipset is ludicrous, and so is the notion that they would actually be able to properly cool it in such a small chassis. They have proven their engineering incompetence, repeatedly, in failing to properly execute on thermal management for systems with 50-70% less TDP. Skunks do not change their stripes.
