All I want is to disable this "Zener diode" overcurrent protection. I can bypass NOS by unplugging internal battery and using EC RAM to force battery registers back on because MSI spahgetti code is overpowered. But I can't bypass this stupid zener overcurrent nazi protection. Seems to be related to amps...anyone here know Linux? Can you disassemble this EC?

This is 17A1EMS1.109 EC. Yes, 109. Not a typo. MSI only released .108 yet they embed 109 in the bioses since last year....and works fine...

False advertising if MSI is making such a bogus claim, and inaccurate reporting by VideoCardz.com, as the P870TM-1 was the first. Maybe they forgot to insert "BGA" in their statement. Clevo is the standard by which all other brands fail, but they're not helping their own cause by making inaccurate statements.

Considering nothing is officially released, there could be other mistakes too.

The current 1080 SLI uses DDR5x so I think we can safely assume it's at least DDR5x in the new model(s) too . :)

    • GRAPHICS - GeForce® GTX 1080 with 8GB GDDR5X SLI
Maybe the typo for the new 8th gen model isn't dropping the "x", it is that the "5" is supposed to be a "6"? :D

Its an advent of iBGAs this year. If most vendors still put money on existing cooling designs then those theoretical core clock speed is very difficult to attain and sustain for longest duration w/o Thermal Throttling. They need to ramp up the fans as well.

Add the 18 heatpipes and 61 blades across 3 fans for some more meaningless numbers.

However the numbers that matter aren't marketing puff, they are measurable and have units. Celsius, MHz and dBa.

True. When I tested the gt83 with 3 fans and a 7920 hq. The cpu in the 83 throttled and could not even compete with the 6820hk in the 80s, even though the 83 had a dedicated cpu fan.

Edit: I was thinking of the GT80S series problems, not the GT83... :)

That only started happening after your GT83 got in the way of a wayward robot careening off the track and hitting your GT83, damaging it.

Before the Robopocalypse the temps for the CPU were fine, remember? I do. :)

If MSI doesn't put the i9-8950HK in a GT83 model and a GT75 model, I will be very surprised.

Actually it was the GT80s that got hit, not the 83. And even after THAT, the 80s still beat the 83 in almost every cpu benchmark I ran on them by almost a factor of 2 due to excessive throttling on the 83. The 80s could hold the 83 core speeds almost indefinitely while the 83 could not hold its stock speeds that long. I sent the 83 back to MSI and sold the replacement that came in the mail, so I only ended up testing 1 unit and do not have a way of seeing if what I experienced was consistent.

Too bad, well now you may have another chance but this time with a i9-8950HK :)

8th generation Core i9-8950HK, i7-8850H/8750H processor performance parameters exposure
2018-03-08 10:12:13 Source: Technology Fast pen testing room of it: I want to comment over the text Q
    https://www.wobenben.com/html/news/201803/11370_1.html

"In the second half of last year, Intel introduced the 8th generation of Core low pressure processor - Kaby Lake Refresh, but the 8th generation of Core standard version has been delayed. There was a lot of media news early this year that Intel will release these processor products in March. Recently, Geekbench's database has again emerged as a test result of the Core i7-8750H chip. As many people wish, the new product not only has an increase in clock frequency, but also increases the number of cores/threads by 50%. At the same time, the Lone Phoenix Warrior in the pen evaluation room also displayed the screenshots of the performance parameters of the i7-8850H and the flagship i9-8950HK.
Stimulated by opponents last year, Intel's pace in this year has been particularly diligent, especially the number of CPU cores has been fully enhanced: 18 cores on enthusiast desktops, 6/4 cores on mainstream desktops, and 4 cores on low-power notebooks. Now it is high again. Performance notebook.

Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard, Quanta, and Razer all have new books based on this new U. The detection shows that it is a 6-core, 12-thread laptop. For the first time in notebook history, the architecture is the latest Coffee Lake .

In terms of specifications , its reference frequency is 2.2GHz, Turbo Boost is up to 4.1GHz, Level 3 cache is 9MB , and there is no detection information in the core but it is believed to be the top model of the Iris class. The thermal design power consumption should be maintained at 45W.

In terms of performance, the i7-8750H can run up to a single-threaded 5032, multi-threaded 21266, which is approximately 22% and 65% higher than the previous generation i7-7700HQ, and really goes from 4 cores to 6 cores.

Compared to the low-voltage version of the i7-8550U with 4 cores and 8 threads, the performance is improved by 20% and 64%.

According to previous exposures, the Coffee Lake-H family will have a top modelCore i9-8950H , which is the first time i9 has appeared in the notebook field.

The expert Pokémon Phoenix Phantom of the pen evaluation room also obtained the parameters and running points of Core i7-8850H. In the information he got, this i7-8850H was unlocked, and basically it was the maximum performance of this CPU. However, this is only an ideal situation. Under normal circumstances, the notebook can not meet its cooling requirements. (The following information is reproduced from Weibo, a lonely Phoenix warrior. The microblog name is this one)
This is the i7-8850H, 6-core 12-thread, default frequency 2.6GHz, highest Turbo 4.0-4.3GHz, the machine automatically unlock power limitations, the chipset uses the next generation of cannon lake PCH, model CM246.
    [IMG] [IMG]

In the CINEBENCH R15 test, the single core runs 188cb, and the multicore runs 1288cb, which is very good, close to the 8700K level, but this is the running power to unlock power. It is not clear how the performance is unlocked.

In addition to the Core i7-8850H, the Lone Phoenix Warrior also received information on Coffee Lake-H's top-of-the-line i9-8950HK processor.
Today, we got the parameters and performance pictures of the next-generation notebook i9. The notebook's Core i9-8950HK has a much higher frequency than the i7-8850H. The single-core processor is 4.8GHz, but this time the CPU power consumption is 45/. 56.3W is not unlocked, so performance is much worse.

    [IMG] [IMG]

In the CINEBENCH R15 test, Core i9-8950HK single-core run 204cb, multi-core run 1083cb, more than the desktop version Core i7-7700K 100cb or so. Chess runs at 15233, similar to the desktop version i7-8600K, but it is still inferior to the i7-7700K. It seems that the 6-core performance at 45W is also limited."

The EVOC P750TM1 looks more and more and more tempting if I had the money - will utterly obliterate the BGA i9 and weigh less than most of the laptops that run the i9. @Donald@HIDevolution - this looks interesting, eh? ;)

The P750TM1 has a 8700K, while the Tornado F5 has a 7700K. And brother @Donald@HIDevolution can tell you the great temps they get from the P750TM1 after tuning and delidding.

Expect some of the OEM's will try the unlocked i9-8950Hk in one of their 15.6" chassis. i9 Extreme means more money. Much more :) And it's up to the OEM how they will let them run (45 → 65w). Or shall we say tune them?

The non K i7's were power unlocked to 200W. They are therefore completely unrepresentative of the retail product that people will buy.

If the i9 at 56W/45W can't break 1100cb then the lesser ones certainly won't

I wouldn't expect the i7 SKUs to perform that much worse than the i9 SKU because they are all power limit throttled. It's a bit like how the i7 7820HK is barely faster than the i7 7700HQ at stock clocks. Still an i7 8700 consumes 113W when under load, and scores ~1400cb stock in Cinebench R15 and the i9 8950H scores 1083cb meaning it has 22.6% less performance for 2.3x less power. That's really impressive.

Not everyone needs a nice car to drive and a clean house to live in, in a nice neighborhood, but those are generally nice things to have that make life better. I know some people are content driving a worn out jalopy and living in a run-down trailer park on the bad side of the railroad tracks, but some that do so wish they could afford finer things in life.

In all seriousness, I understand what you are saying. But, it's all relative. A gain compared to weaker BGA offerings, for sure. No argument there. Compared to a mobile 2920/2960XM, 3920/3940XM or a 4930MX not really. Those are relics from a time when the best of the best manufacturers were actually serious about making such a thing as awesome laptops. Then something tragic happened and they suddenly got retarded on us.

It will be interesting to see how they perform after the notebook manufacturers are finished de-tuning them so they perform poorly in order to run cooler and operate longer on battery power. It's probably going to be like the PC equivalent of buying an American muscle car and replacing the supercharged V8 with an anemic turbo 4-cylinder or hybrid drive train so it can get better gas mileage. It will still look fancy enough to get excited, but it creates a vision of performance that doesn't actually exist.

7820HK@784+50% more cores = 1176cb. Results... 1083cb. Not passed!! Failed and I give it a wopping score... -10 in the gradebook.

I will be interested to see CPU benchmarks of the models the "i9" ends up in, compared to Clevo's budget LGA 15 incher P950TP with i7-8700 which has a lot of CPU power for ~$1500.

you sir, are being brain washed by numbers that have no clear proof and evidence. i can run my 8700k at 150w and get same score as i run it at 100w, there are tweaks and changes to make this happen, however one thing for sure is that desktop chip is of higher grade silicon, the higher performance you go in score the more power efficient it becomes and BGA crappy quality starts to show very clearly in that regards.

    well said!

Surprised the completely locked down H chip could draw that much power. What was it? >65W it was drawing?

    Here's 10831087 CB on a 4.9 ghz BGAbook.

200W power limit ceiling (hwinfo spec report, not live readings). Unlocked dev platform, unlocked ES chip. Dunno how much it actually drew but 200W is more than enough to "permaturbo" on the 6 core turboboost clock of 4.whatever Ghz the whole time (thermals permitting)

Under a 45W limit these i7 H's will settle closer to 3.0ghz or below once the turbo timer runs out. Notebookcheck's repeated cb R15 test will be revealing.

I'm seriously wondering what MSI is going to do with the VRM's on the GT83VR with the 8950H locked down chip. The old GT83VR was designed to handle a 7920HQ (or 6920HQ) and they started putting 7820HK's into it and they overclocked like a dog.

Here is the GT83VR VRM system.
Is this 3+1 phase? Anyone know?
And @BeastsForever.TheDragon said it only has ONE Zener diode!
    MSI-GT83VR-Disassembly-51.jpg

GT73VR has 5+1 (any tech ppl here can verify its 5+1?)
Sorry for potato picture i cant find a good one:

The IC just right after the cpu in gt83 are chokes(i believe). No of chokes= phases. Welp, 3 phases on gt83 and 5 phases on gt73vr(the IC on lower side of cpu in gt73 are chokes).

Still, cant identify zener since i lack the schematics

I think VRMs arent the problem, thermals is. As @Papusan said, msi put 7920hq with 1080sli because a 7820hk would've boiled th heatsink.
That's the reason only some 7820hk variants of gt83 were launched, that too with 1070sli to help temps.

The vrms on gt83 and gt73 are highly capable, since the 1070sli variants can handle the power of OCed 7820hk and dual 1070s(you know, msi mxm 1070 feed off power via mxm slot and not via any external connector)

The i9 is going to be a different kettle of fish. 50% more cores at a higher clock means a lot more heat. I am sure that manufacturers will try putting them in 15" laptops, but the ones that manage to keep them cooled without them throttling will be few and far between.

You are assuming the 8950H will be offered in the GT83VR...and, you know what they say about assuming

It will be offered. Someone apparently broke a NDA and previewed it already on a webpage. That's why Papusan was flaming mad :) haha.

Guess we have to wait and see, eh?

I, for one, would like to see the 8950HK in a P650-esque system—fan noise be damned. However, my purchase of a notebook this year depends more on nVidia, not Intel—hopefully we see Ampere/Volta/Turing/whatever by June. @Donald@HIDEvolution—take note, you have a probable overseas customer here.

something we gotta know is that these CFL chips are of a higher optimized grade 14nm++ refined for yrs. they will be capable of same clock or 100mhz more even with 2 more cores (well mostly for desktop). for mobile im not too sure but shouldnt be that much off.

you can't go wrong with HIDevlution, especially Donald has decades of experience with notebooks, high performance notebook at that too. Nvidia's turing? (new arch) is probably more of an optimized one so they can milk a bit more instead of giving out actual new arc, until AMD catches up.

i'd expect something similar from 680m to 780m, same arc as pascal but with more config cores and other minor improvements, and then name it Turing to generate more sales.
