Intel Launches 8th Gen Coffee Lake-H Family For High-Performance Notebooks – Core i9-8950HK Flagship With 6 Cores, 12 Threads and Up To 4.8 GHz Clocks at 45W
By Hassan Mujtaba, April 3, 2018
https://wccftech.com/intel-8th-gen-coffee-lake-h-notebook-cpu-lineup-launch/
"Intel has officially launched their 8th gen high-performance notebook processors. The latest series aims to take the performance bar even higher for Intel in the mobility space with higher cores, faster clocks and a feature rich platform designed around fast storage and memory solutions.
Intel’s 8th Gen Coffee Lake-H ‘High-Performance’ Notebook Processors Launched – First To Feature Core i9 and 6 Cores on Mobility Devices
Today is the day when we finally get to see what Intel has been cooking secretly for the notebook market. Over the last couple of years, Intel’s mainstream and mobile lineup was stuck with 4 cores and 8 threads in flagship part. This changed with the 8th generation family which brought a core bump to the desktop lineup last year. Now, Intel is bringing the same core bump over to the high-performance notebook sector which has become a slightly heated space due to the resurgence of AMD and their mainstream Ryzen processors.
Today’s announcement is a full fledged lineup which is part of the Intel Coffee Lake-H family. These products not only include the Core series processors but Intel’s Xeon class workstation chips are also launching today. The notebook Core lineup tackles various market segments such as Enthusiast Gaming, Content Creation, VR/MR, Mega-Tasking, Data Analysis, Business on the Go and work station tasks. Some key features of the Coffee Lake-H lineup include:
- First Intel Core i9 and 6-Core Processor Laptops
- Highest Mobile Performance with New Intel Thermal Velocity Boost
- New Mobile Intel 300 Series Chipset With Enhanced Audio and I/O
- New Integrated Intel Wireless-AC With Gigabit Throughput
- New High Speed Integrated USB 3.1 Gen2 (10 Gb/s)
- First Intel Optane Memory Laptop Solution
- Optimized For The Latest Discrete Graphics and Thunderbolt 3
Intel’s Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB) Functionality
The Intel Thermal Velocity Boost feature is supported by the Intel Core i9-8950HK and Xeon E-2186M processors. It is designed to increase performance of both, multi-threaded and single-threaded workloads. The maximum core frequency is achieved while the processors is at a temperature of 50C or lower and turbo power budget is available. Frequencies are expected to reduce over time as the processor temperature increases.
Intel Coffee Lake-H Notebook Processor Lineup and Specifications
Coming to the lineup, the 8th generation Coffee Lake-H family has a total of seven processors. Two of these are Xeon models while the rest are Core models. All of the processors are based on the 14nm++ process node and feature support for Intel Optane memory while the new 300-series chipset also adds integrated Giga bit Wi-Fi which is capable of being up to 2 times faster than standard wireless LAN connections.
Intel Core i7 6 Core / 12 Thread and Core i5 4 Core/ 8 Thread Coffee Lake-H Parts Squeeze More Performance Into Notebooks
The other SKUs include the Core i7-8850H which falls right below the Core i9. This is also a 6 core, 12 thread part but lacks the Core i9 branding. The reason is that it has partial overclocking support and will feature lower clock speeds. The chip has 9 MB of L3 cache compared to full 12 MB on the i9 SKU and will feature clock speeds of 2.60 GHz base, 4.0 GHz boost (all core) and 4.3 GHz (one core boost). The other 6 core, 12 thread part is the Core i7-8750H which comes with the same specs as the Core i7-8850H but has clock speeds of 2.20 GHz base, 3.9 GHz (all core) and 4.2 GHz (one core boost).
There are also two quad core parts with 8 threads. These include the Core i5-8400H and Core i5-8300H. Both feature 8 MB of L3 cache and the former features clock speeds of 2.5 GHz base, 4.1 GHz (All core) and 4.2 GHz (one core boost) while the latter features clock speeds of 2.30 GHz base, 3.9 GHz (All core) and 4.0 GHz (one core boost) frequencies. All chips in the Coffee Lake-H lineup will include the Intel UHD 630 graphics chip which will be clocked at 1100 MHz. All chips will ship with a 45W TDP while the flagship parts will be configurable down to 35W.

Intel’s i9-8950HK CPUs in Laptops at 6C/12T, 4.8GHz
By Steve Burke Published April 03, 2018 at 3:12 am
https://www.gamersnexus.net/news-pc/3276-intel-i9-hedt-cpus-now-in-laptops-6c12t
"Intel has migrated its new i9 processor family to the portable market, or semi-portable, anyway. The i9-8950HK is an unlocked, overclockable 6C/12T laptop CPU, capable of turbo boosting to 4.8GHz when power and thermal budget permits.
The new i9-8950HK runs at a base clock of 2.9GHz, with single-core turbo boosting to 4.8GHz. We are unclear on what the all-core turbo boost max frequency is, but it’s clearly lower. TDP is rated at 45W, though note that this is more a measure of the cooling requirements and not the actual power consumption; that said, Intel’s TDP ratings almost always explicitly coincide with power consumption numbers. The 8950HK will move away from the quad-channel support of its desktop brethren, and instead move down to dual-channel memory at a base frequency of 2666MHz. Unlocked motherboards should theoretically permit higher memory speeds, though we are uncertain of the market options at this time.
Cache is also a major point of differentiation, with the i9 including 12MB combined cache, versus the 9MB of i7 and i5 portable offerings.
Alongside the 8950HK, Intel is also shipping an i7-8750H, i7-8850H, and Xeon CPUs (2186M and 2176M). The Xeon CPUs are 6C/12T parts that operate at 2.9/4.8GHz and 2.7/4.4GHz, respectively. TDP remains 45W for both of these parts.
Gigabyte is one of the launch partners, and has announced the following SKUs:
SKU - Short Description - MSRP (April)
X5 v8-CL4D - 15.6" FHD 144Hz IPS i7-8850H GTX 1070 GDDR5 8GB DDR4-2666 8GB x2 PCIe NVMe 512GB x1 HDD 1TB G-SYNC Win10 - $2,599
X7 DT v8-CL4D - 17.3" FHD 144Hz IPS i7-8850H GTX 1080 GDDR5X 8GB DDR4-2666 8GB x2 PCIe NVMe 512GB x1 HDD 1TB G-SYNC Win10 - $2,999

We are presently unsure if we’ll be testing these parts.

Asus ROG G703 refreshed with unlocked Coffee Lake-H Core i9-8950HK CPU
by Allen Ngo, 2018/04/03
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-...offee-Lake-H-Core-i9-8950HK-CPU.292694.0.html
Asus ROG G703 refreshed with unlocked Coffee Lake-H Core i9-8950HK CPU (Image source: Asus)
"The Intel Core i9 for mobile has arrived and it brings native Optane support to gaming laptops for the first time. Asus has internally refreshed its powerful 17.3-inch gaming notebook to take advantage of the faster Turbo Boost, faster DDR4-2666 RAM, and Optane memory options. The chassis and core hardware features remain identical.
The Asus ROG G703 is one of the largest 17.3-inch gaming notebooks in the market at just over 50 mm thick. Thus, it was only natural for Asus to up the ante and upgrade the system to Intel's recently announced 8th gen Core i9 CPU to cement it as a flagship offering for gamers.
The unlocked hexa-core Core i9-8950HK carries a base clock rate of 2.9 GHz with single-core Turbo Boost of up to 4.8 GHz under the same 45 W TDP as the Core i7-7820HK. Note that the base clock rate of the new Coffee Lake-H CPU is the same as the Kaby Lake CPU it replaces but with a significantly higher single-core Turbo Boost (4.8 GHz vs. 3.9 GHz). Intel is able to achieve this through its new "Thermal Velocity Boost" feature that safely elevates Turbo Boost to even higher clock rates than usual. From our experience with most notebooks, however, such high clock rates are unsustainable and only attainable for a few seconds at best due to cooling restraints. Intel could have easily called its new processor the "Core i7-8950HK", but the "Core i9" moniker is simply more distinct for marketing purposes.
Other than clock rate differences, the i9-8950HK introduces native support for Intel Optane memory and two channels of DDR4-2666 RAM whereas the i7-7820HK "only" supports up to DDR4-2400. Consequently, Asus will be offering the refreshed ROG G703 with faster RAM, Optane memory, and new 144 Hz display options.
The refreshed system is otherwise visually identical to the existing ROG G703. We recommend checking out our review on the outgoing G703 for more information on the notebook. The G703 with Core i9 is scheduled for launch by late April to early May and it will compete directly against the MSI GT75 and Alienware 17 in the Core i9 enthusiast gaming space." -

Possibly an enterprising provider such as yourself can procure what someone wants and import it?
The Global site lists the i9 as an option, and the posts I made previously suggest the countries that will be offering it, so I hope you find some for us.
The US site has a different CPU altogether for the GT83, the Intel Core i7-8850H 2.6 - 4.3GHz...I wonder if that will be OC'able, and what kind of performance it can deliver?:
https://us.msi.com/Laptop/GT83-Titan-Intel-8th-Gen/Specification
The GT83 still comes with 2x330w PSU's for the 1080 SLI and 2x230w for the 1070 SLI, I was hoping for a single PSU solution, but perhaps that will come with the GT85 in the future?

Interesting, these new 8th Generation "U" CPU's are getting the 128MB EDRAM upgrade, that helped boost performance in my old GT80 Broadwell 5950HQ, I wonder how much of a boost at the lower TDP of 28w will make?
Intel Unveils Coffee Lake-U Processors Iris Plus Graphics, Up To 128 MB eDRAM and Much Higher Boost Clocks
By Hassan Mujtaba, April 3, 2018
https://wccftech.com/intel-8th-gen-coffee-lake-u-iris-plus-graphics-cpus-launch/
"Intel has also unveiled their latest Coffee Lake-U parts which feature Iris Plus graphics. These new mainstream mobility processors pack the flagship Intel GPU solution with faster performance and even more on-package embedded DRAM which makes for a formidable solution for sleek laptops.
Intel’s Iris Plus Graphics With 128 MB eDRAM Cache Integrates Within New Coffee Lake-U Mainstream Mobile CPUs
The new Intel Coffee Lake-U lineup is made up of four chips and have nothing do with the existing Coffee Lake-U parts. The new parts will be priced at a slight premium due to the better specs and would ultimately deliver faster graphics performance.
Intel themselves are mentioning some key features of these chips which include the following:
- Up To 4 cores, 8 threads
- Intel Iris Plus Graphics
- New Mobile Intel 300 Series chipset With Enhanced Audio and I/O
- New Integrated Intel Wireless-AC With Gigabit Throughput
- New High Speed Integrated USB 3.1 Gen2 (10 Gb/s)
- First Intel Optane Memory Laptop Solution
- More On-Package eDRAM (128 MB)
The chip has a TDP of 28W which is true for every other Iris Plus Coffee Lake-U part. Rest of the SKUs can be seen in the table below:"

I suppose people in non-USA lands import USA models and use the MSI Global Warranty, so maybe we can do that too.
I also complained about this being the 2nd generation of GT83's to not get HK CPU's, which makes no sense. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
-
It makes no sense to design and create the 8950HK version of the GT83, as MSI did the GT83 7820HK, and then not import them into the US. Designing upgraded CPU cooling components would be part of the build for a new model, and must perform within acceptable thermal performance no matter where it is sold.
It's more likely MSI are trying to keep the price down, and profits up in one of MSI's largest markets. While the MSI Engineers closer to home ship what they want, including the highest performance CPU models.
This oddity might also be part of the deal with Intel to ship models with all of the new CPU's, and the 8850H needs a place to be installed.
As I recall the last time the HK CPU was in the GT83 those units all sold out, and the 6920HQ models still linger on... MSI probably doesn't want that to happen again. One CPU SKU only eliminates that possibility.Last edited: Apr 11, 2018 -

It is more likely they are trying to keep the warranty claims down, not the price.
Let's wait to see the temps of a GT83 with the Intel® Core™ i9-8950HK...then you will understand it is not a conspiracy lead by MSI USA marketing and sales, but rather a good decision based on sound judgement. -

What you appear to be suggesting is that MSI is foisting poor thermal performance GT83 8950HK / 7820HK models in other countries, and that MSI can't get away with doing that here in the USA?
The Dragon Gaming Center will OC CPU and GPU, and that will be one level of OC to see reported from the typical reviewers.
Let's hope experienced OC'ers that undervolt and know how to tune for performance and thermals report in too, not only reviewers that won't do either.
I think the GT83 8950HK OC will perform just fine, otherwise MSI wouldn't be shipping it, anywhere.Last edited: Apr 3, 2018 -

Please quote this in your other thread. -
MSI has always done a good job of creating / designing engineering solutions for new thermal challenges, not just in the GT8x series, but also in all their models.
That's why I am comfortable saying that I expect that the MSI GT83 and GT75 will perform well with their 8950HK's, stock and unlocked OC.
These are new 6c/12t CPU's in new models, so improvements in performance over time is to expected - but I don't think MSI is going to ship the 8950HK anywhere, in anything, until they are happy with the performance.
Given the 7820HK worked fine in both the GT83 and GT73/75, I think this is MSI USA optimizing their sku's for profit and sell through in the USA, rather than MSI being worried about failing 7820HK / 8950HK in GT83's, or failing 8950HK's / 7820HK's in GT73's / GT75's anywhere.Last edited: Apr 3, 2018 -
