Coffee Lake Coming With 1151 Socket, But Still Requires 300-Series Chipset
by Paul Alcorn September 8, 2017 at 1:05 PM
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/coffee-lake-intel-socket-1151,35418.html
"Coffee Lake's dam burst, and the trickle of information we've seen over the last month has turned into a flood. The latest information comes from ASRock, which published Intel's imminent Coffee Lake CPUs on a Socket 1151 compatibility list. We grabbed a screenshot, but ASRock later removed the Coffee Lake CPUs from the list.
We already knew that Coffee Lake requires new 300-series motherboards, as first indicated by ASRock and then later accidentally confirmed by Intel, but sticking with Socket 1151 will make it harder for enthusiasts to stomach the lack of backward compatibility with 200-series motherboards.
This isn't an entirely new tactic from Intel, but we need a good reason to upgrade from the eight-month old Kaby Lake-era Z270 motherboards, and in contrast to Intel's other transitions, this time around you will gain extra cores in the process.
That comes with a caveat though, as we would like to see some additional platform capabilities from a new chipset, but all signs point to the 300-series chipset merely being a "Z270 refresh," meaning it will not bring any increased connectivity options. It remains to be seen if the 300-series will support Kaby Lake processors--they do share the same socket after all. But outside of new LED functionality or other third-party additions, that might be a dubious upgrade path if there aren't connectivity improvements."
Eurocom / MSI are waiting until Coffee Lake "2" in 2H18 to bother making a new motherboard for Coffeelake, at least for their new 17.3" whitebook laptop:

HP shows us what a real PC workstation looks like with a 56-core, 3TB Z8
Fully decked out, it will be quite expensive.
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/201...workstation-looks-like-with-a-56-core-3tb-z8/
"If you're a demanding computer user, sometimes your 13-inch Ultrabook laptop just won't quite cut it. For those looking for a little more computing power, HP's new Z8 workstation could be just the answer. The latest iteration of HP's desktop workstations packs in a pair of Intel Skylake-SP processors, topping out with twinned Xeon Platinum 8180 chips: 28 cores/56 threads and 38.5MB cache each running at 2.5-3.8GHz, along with support for up to 1.5TB RAM.
Next year, you'll be able to go higher still with the 8180M processors; same core count and speeds, but doubling the total memory capacity to 3TB, as long as you want to fill the machine's 24 RAM slots.
Those processors and memory can be combined with up to three Nvidia Quadro P6000 GPUs or AMD Radeon Pro WX 9100 parts if you prefer that team. The hefty desktop systems have four internal drive bays, two external (and a third external for an optical drive), and nine PCIe slots. Storage options include up to 4TB of PCIe-mounted SSD, and 48TB of spinning disks. A range of gigabit and 10 gigabit Ethernet adaptors are available; the machines also support 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2. Thunderbolt 3 is available with an add-in card.
This kind of hardware tends to be thirsty, and, to that end, HP will fit the systems with up to a 1.7kW PSU.
Prices will start at $2,439 for the bottom spec; we'd expect the top-end configuration to cost 20 times that.
If you don't need quite as much hardware, the Z6 workstation line offers a single socket, for a maximum of 28 cores, 384GB RAM, and 4TB storage, and the Z4 uses a Xeon W (which is more or less a Xeon-branded version of the high-end desktop chips) and up to 256GB memory."
Intel’s Skylake “Scalable Processor” family is a new approach to Xeon
New chips have metallic branding, wider range of configurations, and integrated features.

Intel Z370 Chipset Could Support Kaby Lake - But Intel Will Not Allow It-Guru3d.com
"According to some board partners the extra pins used on Z370 are merely supported voltage pahs. Ergo, (but not confirmed) perhapsvice versa Coffee lake could have been supported on Z270 as well. But this last bit remains speculation of course. But the reality is, that other processors than Coffee Lake on LGA1151 could have been supported on Z370, yet Intel simply will not allow board partners to support them."

Project CARS 2 Benchmarked On NVIDIA, AMD & Intel Hardware – Scales Well With CPU Cores
"Moving on to the CPU side of the performance equation you can quickly tell that the game LOVES CPU cores, the more the better. We see very clear scaling from four threads, 8 threads 12 threads and all the way to 16 threads. The scaling is especially evident when looking at the Sandy Bridge i5 2500K, i7 2600K and i7 3970X as well as the AMD Ryzen lineup. This is a massive improvement over the game’s predecessor which was heavily reliant on single-threaded performance." But what with Ryzen? When will it come on level with Intel 4 core i7-6700K? And soon will Intel 6cores(i7-8700K be released.Last edited: Sep 22, 2017 -

Conclusion:
<But then again, if you're looking at the Intel Core i9-7980XE and price is a concern, you're entirely missing the point.
This is a premium product. Extremely intensive cherry picking of the very best of Intel's silicon yield gives a product which runs at relatively low power, low temperatures, and can be overclocked very heavily without requiring anything like the voltages you might expect for such a core heavy processor. We achieved about the best we could expect on our setup without needing to go over 1.2v on the vCore. Remember we're using just about the base possible motherboard and some middle-of-the-road memory to achieve our results.
It is something of a cliché to use cars as comparisons, but it is difficult to look at the results we attained from the i9-7980XE and not come away with the words "Rolls Royce" ringing in our ears. But, the performance is mind-blowing too, whether at stock or overclocked.
If you demand the very best and will settle for nothing less, and have the budget necessary to surround the i9-7980XE with suitably high-end parts throughout your build, then clearly this is the processor for you.
For the rest of us for whom a quad-core CPU is more befitting our financial status then only one recourse is possible; Dear Santa...>Last edited: Sep 30, 2017 -

"Getting the max out of 6 core processor <required> changes to our motherboards, specifically to provide improved power delivery to new 6-core processors.
We also took the opportunity to improve our overclocking capabilities by improving the package power delivery to the CPU. This is an another change that <required> motherboard changes.
We increased memory bandwidth on processor up to 2666 MHz that <required> another improvement on the motherboard layout."
Why This Makes No Sense
"Truth be told the only apparent reason Intel is breaking compatibility with existing motherboards is that they’re simply after your money. Intel is a company trying to make a buck after all. If you’re upgrading to Coffee Lake from Broadwell or an older processor this doesn’t really affect you." @Eurocom SupportLast edited: Sep 26, 2017 -

Wouldn't incompatibility with Z270 hurt adoption rates for new chips and make people delay buying either a new CPU or a new mobo unless they had to? Or does Intel make money directly from board sales somehow to make up for that?

AMD vs. Intel at 16 cores: We test Ryzen Threadripper 1950X against Core i9-7960X
Conclusion;
Looked at in a core-vs.-core battle without considering price, Intel's Core i9-7960X leads the way. It gives you great performance at light-duty applications and generally can't be touched by the Threadripper 1950X in heavy-duty applications, either. In a lot of the tests we ran, we were actually surprised Core i9 ran away from Threadripper so easily.
That said, it's pretty hard to ignore price when you're spending your own money on a build. Our opinion hasn't changed for Threadripper: It is absolutely the best $1,000 CPU you can get, a spectacular deal. But price aside, in a 16-vs.-16 battle, Core i9 is the winner.
Aka nothing new in the sun. And Pcworld.com haven't talked about how they will compare with maxed or decent OC. Probably bigger difference with not the big increase in cost (Both systems will need proper cooling if you go for overclocking).
Edit... News regarding shortage of Coffe chips!!
Intel Helps Retailers Digest Old Core K-series Inventory with Game Bundles
"With the rather fast introduction of the Intel Core i7-8700K (just 9 months following the January 3rd launch of the i7-7700K), retailers are finding themselves with quite a bit of unsold i7-7700K (and even i7-6700K) inventory. Consumers are drawn to either the i7-8700K, or the competing AMD Ryzen processors. To help the market digest these unsold chips, Intel started a new game-bundle dubbed "Game Without Compromise." Yeah, the main reason we have a shortage of Coffe chips!!Last edited: Oct 16, 2017Vasudev, tilleroftheearth and Dr. AMK like this. -
