I would recommend a notebook cooler. Specifically the Zalman NC2000 as it fits great with your notebook. If you look below in my sig you will see a review of the cooler with a Vostro 1500 which is all but identical except in color to your system. The NC2000 is about 6$ over your budget vs the NC1000 that would fit in your budget but if you look at the comparasion *link in sig once again* you notice it is worth it especially for the specific fan layout.

If you look at the buyers guide there is a small section on how to get the best price possible

    1. What notebook do you own/going to own (Make and Model)?
    HP Pavillion dv7z

    2. Specs of the notebook (List Details Please)
    AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile ZM-82
    ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
    3 GB RAM
160GB HDD, System Info calls it "Fujitsu MHZ2160BH G2 ATA Device"

NOTE: I have 4 USB ports but only use two as the remainders get in way of the mouse. Any USB powered cooler needs to have at least one replacement port so that I can plug in my printer when needed without wrapping my computer in cords.

    3. Maximum and minimum temperature of CPU/GPU/HDD in Celsius and if possible idle and load times (see software guide)

Under full load, 87C - 91C, depending on amount of time under load.

Under normal load, without gaming or watching movies, it runs at a typical minimum of 64C and gets up to or in excess of 75C - depending upon programs being used and whether I stop to lift the bottom/put it in sleep for a few minutes.

When started up after being off and unplugged for 6 or more hours, the minimum temperature reading is generally between 47C and 55C.

When idling normally, the general minimum is anywhere from 50C to 60C, depending upon various factors that I've yet to figure out. Possibly environment or background-process related.

After being asleep for at least a half-hour, the general temperature is circa 45C.

When gaming (and by gaming I mean playing the low-end 'free trial' type games that come with the HP Game Console... the 'worst' in CPU load being the game Fate), the temperature -easily- exceeds 84C and once even reached 96C for a few moments... while playing Diner Dash (I kid you not).

It should be noted that simply lifting my computer off of the desk produces a gradual but consistent decline of 10C in current temperature. Upon placing it back on the desk, it immediately climbs back up in temp.

    4. What sort of cooling solutions are you looking for? (active solutions (fan coolers/passive, thermal paste...etc) )
Something that I'm confident enough to use and that will not void the warranty.
So... a cooling pad is most likely the best option for me.

    5. Budget for cooling solutions?
Low budget, but not low enough to compromise quality. Nothing over 100$, definitely. And I'd prefer something that is easy to purchase, not hard to find.

    6. Your general computer knowledge (Beginner to Expert)
When it comes to hardware, and related stuff, I'm definitely a beginner.

Could you post a picture of the bottom of your notebook to be able to view the fan layout please :) it would help with choosing the right notebook cooler for your system

Also you may also want to under volt your processor. Read the Undervolting Guide for more info but it is pretty straight forward.

seeing as how it uses the same chassis as the P-6860 FX, i highly recommend using the NZXT Cryo LX with it. i see idle temps in the low to mid 20's for the cpu, 41C idle for the gpu, and under load for the cpu i have only seen 50C one time, and 68C max for the gpu.

Here's the bottom of my computer. The picture's upside down due to the awkward workspace and whatnot. As far as I know, all the fans other than the one I labelled 'output' are intake vents.

I can't get measurements right now, due to leaving the computer on and not having a ruler handy. But let me know if you need the measurements.

It would be helpful for measurements as currently it is between the NZXT and the Zalman NC2000 :)

Also some general hot spots may help :)

Would like to apologize in advance for the poor quality of the written in measurements and such. Hopefully it's legible to more than just myself. If not, I'll fix it with text rather than hand-written measurements; I just did what was easiest. All measurements are in inches.

Also, the heat zones are labelled in the second image rather than just listing warm/cool/etc. because they vary depending on usage. Here's the explanation of each:

A - Always warm to the touch at least slightly. Can get uncomfortably hot to the touch when playing a game or when experiencing higher CPU temps. Not certain, but suspect that this may be where my CPU resides. The corresponding part of the keyboard seems to suffer from radiant heat as well, but is never as hot as the bottom.

B - Generally rather cool to the touch, except when everything else is hot. In such cases, this area tends to be a bit warm to moderately hot. It's never uncomfortable to touch.

C - One word: ouch. Obviously, the air blown out by the vent is always at least a bit warm; but the surrounding plastic on the underside is never something pleasant to touch. I made the mistake of touching this area once after pausing a game (while lifting the computer to cool it down a bit). The fingers that touched it hurt for about a minute. So, not hot enough to burn - but hot enough to make you realize it was a stupid idea to touch it. This is also the place where the computer's design is the worst. Whenever sitting - even if on a desk - this vent area is blocked. You could slip a piece of paper between the plastic and the desk, but that's it. The legs just aren't close enough to it to do any good in lifting.

D - This is my optical drive. When not watching a DVD or otherwise accessing the drive, this area is always cool - as if the computer hasn't been turned on in hours. When in use, it can get at least half-way through a movie before getting warm. Even then, the heat is very minimal. Not that it has a vent anyway. Just figured I'd list it for the sake of being thorough.

E - Right around the circled legs, this area stays cool until the computer is overheated (it starts getting warm when the CPU hits circa 75C). Further out, closer to where labelled zone E meets labelled zone F, it gets rather warm on either side, but mainly on the left side (which is also the left side in the image, due to how the computer was flipped over). The left palm rest gets warm frequently - but it's never an uncomfortable sort of warm. I believe this is where my HDD is. On the underside, it's just as warm as the palm rest. This is one of only two locations where the top's heat matches the bottom's. The other location is the left top of my speaker and left bottom of my screen - and this is directly related to the heat of the air exiting the computer.

F - This area generally stays rather cool, rarely getting more than what I would class as 'warm.' But since there's a vent there, I would like for air to be able to get inside of it - as such could likely prove useful to the hotter zones in the long run.

Zones A and C are what I would consider the hot spots I'm most concerned about.

Is this the one you are referring to? Judging by the pictures on Amazon and in the notebook buyer's guide here, I would say yes; but I want to be certain before putting forth that much money for a cooler. Totally worth the price, imo, when it comes to saving a computer I spent 18 times that much on, though. :) So not complaining about price. Just wanting to make sure it's the right one because that'd be too much to spend for one that wasn't recommended for my notebook.

Also, +rep for being so helpful, X2P. :D

is there anywhere that has heat thresholds for specific cards? i have a 9600m GT and would like to know what the danger zones are. with a zalman 2000 its running around 60C idle (no problems with that) but around 85-88C load.

    those temps are ok.

danger zone for GPUs are 94-95C and above.

as long as it stays under 90C for a long duration of time, then its fine.

unless you're working around semicoductors specially designed to work in high heat environments, like on your car engine, or on a Venus lander, or a power rectifier, my guess is that one should treat home computer chips about the same regarding operating temperatures. That is (by my own personal rule of thumb) <60C is long term OK, >80C is bad for long life and Intel themselves say 100C is "emergency shutdown" time, right now! I don't see any difference between a processor on a graphics card vs. one on a motherboard.

hello there, I have a Samsung HD and NHC 2.0 doesn't read its temps (shows 0°C), I'm using HWMonitor, and it's ok, but I runs in a window and can't be placed on my tool bar (where the clock and batt. life are).
Is there any way to put HW in my tool bar or make NHC to read my HD temps?

Thanks for your time, excelelent job you're doing here.

Arrrrgg..I just bought a Vantec lapcool pro as it seemed like it had some good specs....I like that its AC powered but the fans pull away from teh laptop, I want them to blow and after opening it up (and probably voiding any chance of returning it) they are not reversible. ...So I would not recommend this cooler to anyone.

    Hi X2P,

Has anyone suggested a GOOD Laptop Cooler for "Gateway M-6862" laptop.

Look at my input here ... that Antec Cooler does not work for this laptop. Also I found out ... eventhough this laptop is 15.4" laptop ... it might need a larger type cooler so it can sit on it correclty and comfortably without sliding and slipping.

    See Post #124

Q: Do you have any suggestion on a cooler for this Specific Laptop?

BTW, here are 3 pictures showing the Exhaust Vent and Underneath of the Laptop and Opened guts ...

    Thanks,

    G! :)

    Hi Gophn & K-TRON,

I am stumped with this problem of Cooling the Gateway M-6862 ... which I already posted the Pictures of back opened up in my earlier post #270.

Now, with my old Sager 2092 (Compal JFL92) all I had to do to get the Temps down was raise my laptop and blow cool air with a 6" personal fan under it and the temp would go down in a heartbeat.

Now with this M-6862 the more air I blow under the laptop ... it HOTTER it gets the minute I stop blowing air under it ... Temps go down. I know this a cheapy laptop ... but shouldn't blowing air help it rather than work against it.

I even tried using my Antec Cooler ... you know the Silver Plate one on Hi-Speed ... same thing ... I almost think that the cooler is working AGAINST the fan system inside of the M-6862 laptop.

Now I wonder if even I buy a Zalman NC1000 ... the laptop will behave tehe same way as far as Temp goes.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    G! :)

    Hi X2P,

Nice hearing from you ... here is the 2 pictures of the actual laptop.

    BTW, this laptop dimensions are
    14.2" (inches) Wide X 10.2" Deep (Length) X 1.5" High (Thickness)

So, I am not sure if the Zalman NC1000 would work with this ... the laptop might be hanging from one side to align the laptop Vent correctly.

    THANKS!

    Hi!
What do you think, would the ZALMAN ZM-NC2000 cooler be good for my Sager NP5796? My GPU load temp is max 74C and my HDD is max 55C and I'm hoping at least -8C for the GPU and -5C for the HDD with this cooler...is it possible? If not, what would you recommend?

Pictures of the laptop, pictures of the cooler

Thank you for the answer !

If you can afford it and are ok with a little bit of noise I would hit up the NZXT Cryo Lx

The Zalman 2000 would work better but it is not worth the money for this notebook. I believe it is similar to a notebook where the user had gone through sevral coolers and found they all performed the same. The reasoning behind this would be that the vents on each panel is just too small. The Zalman was the quetiest but if you can find it for a good deal it may be worth going for a Cooler Master Notepal Infinite

    Hi folks,

@ Johnny T ... Thanks for the HeadsUp!

    Hi X2P,

Q1: Would Notepal really work with Gateway M-6862?

Q2: Would it just be better if I forget about the Cooler and just Voltage Down the CPU?

    Thanks

OK, so I've had the Gateway P-7811FX a few weeks now and have monitored pretty religiously under a lot of circumstances...

The CPUs stay ASTONISHINGLY cool in this. The highest it has gotten has still not reached human body temperature... this is despite having Crysis, Oblivion, even the most taxing thing for it... the first week when I took a clean install and was updating 50 things at once (that isn't an exaggeration, either)... so they are good.

The GPU... the air coming out feels like fire from a dragon, but the result is a pleasing 30something when browsing (despite HD res and lots of videos playing when I "browse")... usually stays in the 40s after a while or in the 50s for gaming, but it has gone up in the 60s, too, when loading new areas of a game in particular. It's hit a max of 70 but then quickly dropped back to 58 in a matter of 3 seconds or so... I don't know whether to worry about it since the fans will surely not stay this efficient forever.

What I'm worried about most is this stinkin hard drive. OK, so they put a 7200rpm one in... but when it's staying around a 54-55 degree point (50 being its minimum) despite my anti-virus being Avast (relatively non-intrusive) and keeping almost nothing actively running off the hard drive, well... yeah... it is getting up to 59 celsius regularly.

My real issue? I *want* to use this as a laptop... curse me now, but I was in a really rough accident and PT is wiping me out, so... my bed or couch ... they get my presence, not my desk, since broken backs don't like being upright.

Does anyone have much experience with the LapLogic G800 and W800???

    http://hardwarelogic.com/news/137/ARTICLE/4429/1/2008-10-15.html
    and
    http://hardwarelogic.com/news/137/ARTICLE/4463/2008-10-03.html

are reviews ... but from the same guy, and only 1...

Still, my issues with the zalman are 2-fold... portability and comfort. I really want an aluminum BOX with a little pillow on the bottom and fans inside...

The HD is front and center, so the Cryo seems like the worst option... the Zalmans don't look like they are lap-friendly, and making my own isn't an option. Does anyone actually use the zalmans on their laps?

Despite injuries aplenty, I am still very mobile and take this beast into the city a lot... and I'm getting ready to move to downtown Seattle in under a month, so that's going to just get more and more insanely true.

I don't mind spending the money... I wish, wish, wish there was more competition for this sort of thing (ie, I just got my Osprey 78% recycled Elroy Courier Bag to carry this and many other things for $59.99 including shipping)... I'm such a competitive bargain hunter ... and it works... that if I had a local retailer, I'd have a $100 item in my hands for under $60 (proof is in my BlueAnt headset that I did just that with 2 days ago)...

I wanted to find these in a local store to really feel, to test out. I don't want a lot of weight digging into my legs in odd spots. I wouldn't mind 3 pounds... if the 3 pounds were even.

So is that LapLogic a reasonable choice, or is my hard drive just going to keep melting? The material in it seems fantastic...

What about the ThermalTake ... um, is the 1000 the one that's orange on the sides and overall flat with a slight incline?

The only mod I'm going to do is placement oriented. My computer is much hotter on the right side overall (the area where the RAM are=hotter than the CPU), so I'm moving the hard drive from the right to the left since it's gonna be worked all the time. I opted out of a secondary internal drive for the heat concerns. That said, Best Buy marked $70 off Seagate's new XTreme FreeAgent 1.5TB 7200RPM eSata/Firewire/USB2.0 drive... so yeah, that's what I'm storing stuff on *kisses the eSata port*... but can't get past that OS, nope nope nope.

OK, so you get it--I need something to put IN my lap. I don't mind using a USB port as long as they replace it. Don't mind having active cooling. DO mind having something I have to put on a desk.

Current solutions=a thick bamboo mat with 2"x1/2" holes across the whole thing and a topless rectangular trash can that the laptop sits across to make a cross shape of sorts... hey, can't get much better air flow than 30" of free space with only 2 1/8" vertical support beams holding the computer. Still, what do I do to get this working well... everywhere else?

Hey I have an XPS m1330 and I have had peaks of about 90 C playing spore, and an idle of about 60C peaking around 67 with a bunch of firefox windows open. It consistently stays around 80-90C when I run videos through HDMI, both dual screen and dedicated HDTV screen only. I am using a notebook cooler, a targus 2 fan. Should i use it with the airflow towards the bottom of the laptop, or the airflow pulling air from the bottom. I am very concerned with the peaks of my temp easily reaching high 80's to 90C under load.

I also have a Gateway P-7811FX 17" and have been looking for a notebook cooler. I'm posting a picture of the underside of it with this message.

The notebook does not seem to run overwhelmingly hot, even when playing WAR. The air coming out the back side vent is hot, but the underside not so much. It is uncomfortable on my legs however and so I'm looking for some type of pad to set it on.

Surprisingly, the single most useful peice of information for me is missing from almost every review. Can you comfortably use this on your lap?

I've looked at the Zalman 2000 and it's vents are on the bottom where my vents are barely vents. My main vents are on the top.

I've looked at the NZXT Cryo and it's vents are on the top, but it looks really uncomfortable for the lap and I read one review that said you would not want to try it.

The Silverstone Noble Breeze looks good and I love that it's got the mesh on the bottom/sides so my legs can't block air intakes. However, I can't find a single review on it anywhere. With it's vents on the top, I'll get air into my intakes, but will it cool my HDD at all? It's one of the hot spots I've illustrated.

The last one I was looking at was the Coolermaster Notepal Infinite as it seemed to send air up covering everything and I thought it might make a nice compromise.

I am not really concerned about price as I am fairly certain that it was heat that ruined my $3000 Sager 5760. Compared to that, $100 is pretty mild. What I am concerned about is that I use my notebook mostly for gaming and exclusively on a reclining sofa. I am very concerned about my legs covering air intakes on many of these models and many do not look comfortable for a lap. Also, as I rarely travel, and then don't take my sofa with me, mobility is not a big issue. Weight on my legs would be however.

Any advice would really be appreciated.

i have an acer 8204 wlmi (i've never looked at temperatures before and i bought this laptop two and a half years ago)

Intel Core Duo T2500 (2.0 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 Cache)
ATi Mobility Radeon X1600 256 MB GDDR3 (upto 512 MB with Hypermemory)
    120 GB 5400rpm SATA HDD
    2 GB DDR2-667

    core 1 min 90C max 90C
    core 2 min 96C max 100C
hard drive min 45c max 51c
im not sure about the gpu but i have one call ACPI THRM min 90C max 96C

as far as cooling systems go im looking for the most effective and my budget is $100

i would say that my computer knowledge is above average

    thanks

    90C?

I would double check the readings with other monitoring software recommended on the 1st page.

i checked the reading using 3 different programs and i pretty much get the same numbers 95C for the cores, 50-55C for the hard drive

cleaning the vents doesnt seem to make much of a difference (i only cleaned the air intake and fan a couple of days ago)

    what can i do?

can this heat issue affect the performance of the laptop when im playing games?

I don't know about performance in the short term, but in the long term, my Sager would have the video lock up and have to be restarted during WoW, a relatively mild game on the video card. I could still hear the game running, and see my hard drive being accessed, but the video wouldn't update. I am also fairly certain the heat was responsible for a hard drive failure before the video started going bad.

Did you take out the heat sink and clean both sides of it with air? I found dog hair had matted the inside of my heat sink and blowing air into the fan would matt it further while blowing air into the vent outtake would not budge it.

Heat will definitely ruin your laptop and simply cleaning out the vents was not sufficient for me once it started getting bad. I saved for 4 months for that laptop, about the same time it took for heat to kill it once it started.

The hard drive was replaceable, but once things started to go wrong, they just kept going downhill and in the end nothing I tried would restore the laptop to it's previous condition. I figure, don't let it start, get some type of cooler and start thoroughly cleaning your laptop early.

@Crazyegg...from such high temps it is possible that the CPU heatsink was not properly seated. I would sent it back to ACER if it is still covered by warranty. If not you can attempt to re applying the thermal paste yourself.

mcampbell, if you do decide what cooler to get before I do (I'll likely be announcing it since this is a very popular new computer that a lot of people are going to be cooling, well, hopefully cooling!)... please let me know how well it cools your baby--the hard drive especially, since there's so little airflow for it compared to the whole side dedicated to cooling the GPU (which is currently very very effective)... I'll be doing the same for certain... I wish I had the $ to buy multiple ones and compare, but... that would only be true if I got relatively inexpensive ones.

I'm debating between the laplogic I mentioned (passive but it supposedly has a lot of high tech cooling gel that could be awesome, depending on the strips that are in contact with the actual computer, since we're both wanting a LAPtop) and the coolermaster infinite... the silverstone (review here http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/index.cfm?reviewid=2193 ) seems to still need some major clearance on the bottom to shove the air out the mesh... on my legs with clothes, etc... I worry about covering too much of the mesh (I'm skinny, but still... 16" of width isn't exactly a huge surface)

Thank you for posting the picture--my camera is my phone, and I haven't been able to get a good shot.

Hey, i dont know if anyone added it, but PC Wizzard 2008 adds an on screen floater for CPU GPU HD temps. Pretty useful. Its the only one that could actualy read my GPU temps all other programs didnt work (alienware m7700 aurora)

Nallukka, I went into Photoshop with the pic I had made of the back of my computer. I superimposed all of the coolers I mentioned one at a time at 50%. None of them reached the vents except the Coolermaster Notepal Infinite. I would be happy to send you that Photoshop file or .jpgs of the pics. I was super careful with dimensions but didn't really need to be as none of them came very close. The Coolermaster gets a pretty good review on this site as well as newegg and as it's air intake is in the back so I'm certain my legs won't cover the vents. I don't find that my laptop runs very hot, but I'm careful after ruining my Sager. I'm not rich and I worked so hard to earn that thing that it made me sick when it went kaboom.

I'm not going to go with the little pads with the thermal gel in them. I understand the science behind them but I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around something covering the vents yet still cooling the laptop. It may work, but when something doesn't "feel" right, I go with it.

Anyone have any advice before I buy the Coolermaster? I will post here once I do to let everyone know how it works with the Gateway.

    Comments would really be appreciated.

    Matthew

The Notepal infinite will cover the side vents very very well. But the middle section on the other hand, will be poorly cooled if at all by the notepal.

    I would not say that.

I have a Clevo D900K (aka. Alienware Aurora m7700)... I monitor my GPU temps with:
    - RivaTuner
    - HWmonitor

    1. What notebook do you own/going to own (Make and Model)?
Not strictly a laptop but uses laptop components- Aopen MP45 mini pc

    2. Specs of the notebook (List Details Please)
    T7300/T9300, 4gb pc6500, 100gb 7200.1

    3. Maximum and minimum temperature of CPU/GPU/HDD in Celsius and if possible idle and load times (see software guide)
Idle 40c, load after 8 mins 85c+ , stopped once it hit this temp

    4. What sort of cooling solutions are you looking for? (active solutions (fan coolers/passive, thermal paste...etc) )
Advice on extracting best performance from existing cooler

    5. Budget for cooling solutions?
    Anything

    6. Your general computer knowledge (Beginner to Expert)
    Intermediate

Wanted advice if poss, the underside of the cooler has thermal adhesive with what looks like some type of thin metal sheet stuck to it (see pics). This sheet is meant to touch directly onto the cpu without thermal paste (apparently).

Under load it gets far too toasty, so wanted to know what you all thought-

-Should I use a thin layer of thermal paste on the metal sheet?

-Should I remove the existing sheet and adhesive and try and find a thin sheet of copper to replace it with?

-Should I remove the metal sheet and adhesive and simply just use thermal paste directly onto the base of the cooling assembly?

-Some other option I havn't thought of?

I will be undervolting, but I still feel the cooling system needs to be better also. A laptop cooler wont benefit me due to the small footprint of this thing.

    Thanks! :)

I'm going with the Notepal Infinite. I'm attaching a pic of it superimposed on the bottom of the gateway. Hopefully you can tell which is which. I'm going with it for a few reasons:

    1. It's one of the few with air coming in the back. Can't get covered by my legs, my bed or the floor.

    2. It's one of the few with the top screen. The vents in this current machine and in the Sager do not circulate through the laptop or even go over the processor or gpu. They go in, go through the blades of a heat sink placed at the outtake vent and that's it. This will at least blow air on all of it.

    3. If it cools around the edges, then it should get the two main vents and the two subvents (HDD).

    4. If for some reason it does not cool all of the areas I need, I figure I will crack it open and either replace or expand the fans inside it with more in different locations. I haven't seen one open so I don't know if this will be feasible.

Regardless, it should arrive in two weeks or so. I got it for $29 and $11 shipping. Evidently this thing is shipped from the bottom of the great barrier reef, it's the only reason I can figure out as to why it would cost so much and take so long.

When it arrives I'll test it out for a few days and then let everyone know more specific information as to exactly how much of the "edges" are cooled and how much/litttle the center is cooled. It should help resolve some questions with our particular model of Gateway laptops.

i really dont want to send the laptop to acer they take so long to fix and return the laptop and i use the laptop everyday

is there a definite way to know that the cpu heatsink has become dislodged
wont a laptop cooler help me at all? and are there any other effective methods of cooling like i said my budget is $100

i use the laptop for 10-12 hours a day, when i start the laptop the cpu temperatures hover at around 70C but as the hours go by the the temeperature gets to around 95C

i also notice that as the day progresses the applications on my computer start working a little slower
i think the heat is starting to affect the laptop

I've given up trying to find a utility that will control the fan on a Fujitsu A6120 (ForgetYou A series) with it's embedded control placed outside ACPI. However, I noticed that the blower type fan exhausts internal air past the CPU heat sink as the last step before the air leaves the notebook. Wouldn't it make more sense to reverse the fan an have it suck in cool outside air and send it past the CPU first before spreading out to the other internal components. Can I just reverse the polarity on the DC 3-wire fan. What happens to the 3rd tach wire. How about just blowing inwards at top speed all the time? It's already extremely quiet because the LCD screen shields the fan output at the rear of the rig. Any ideas, you hardware gurus ?

    Thanks.
